I don't know if this qualifies, but I'm training with a local store, for a half marathon. We ran five miles this morning which took me just over an hour. Next week is six miles then eight the week after that. We have shorter runs during the week.

After the run this morning, I felt pretty good, so I've just got back from a 75 minute brisk walk, with my dogs.

I'd love to join the 1 hour runner team in the future! I'm currently registered for my second race ever (since high school anyway) a marathon relay where I run 4.5 miles. I'm thinking that might take me a full hour. I'm scheduled to run my 4.5 miles today when I get off work, so I'll let you know! I never thought I would enjoy running, and even though it kicks my butt, here I am!
Does anyone have trouble running races without music? I just realized that headphones are not allowed on the course, so I'm wondering how I'm going to stay pumped up!
Any thoughts on that?

Good luck with your running!

I did the 54 minutes this morning, woohoo!
And I felt like I could have kept going. But I'm forcing myself to follow the plan and not overdo. So hopefully next Sunday will be an hour of running!
Now I'm looking for 10K's in my area in Feb/March.

I did my first 5K since 1994 in November. Then I realized I need a new goal to keep me motivated, so I'm using the one hour running program here: http://www.kathrineswitzer.com/fitness_run
.html

When I started it I was already at the point of Week 7, and now I'm on Week 9. On Sunday I'm attempting 54 minutes of solid running and a little bit intimidated by it. But I think I can do it!

I don't know what my goal will be when I'm able to consistently run an hour; maybe a 10K, I dunno'.

I know, my husband checked my route because he didn't believe and it is actually 5.8 miles. I wear a timer because I used it to begin training and it is habit to hit it on the start.I have run a couple of 5k's and a coach was pacing my 'group' at 101/2.I ran 5.1 today at 55mins on a new route. I don't know if I can walk a 14 min./mi...let me know how that does on your long run. I am not a speed demon and I don't think I will be running that pace when I get above 6miles, it may depend on my general frustration HA!HA!.

did I read this right? you did 6 miles in one hour? That's a ten minute mile....sounds a little fast to me...I had normally been running 6 miles in about 68 to 70 minutes...now I've been following a training plan that wants me to do my long runs at a 14 min mi. pace...that's really hard to do but I sure couldn't do ten min mi...you must be a speed demon!

I looked through some of the posts and am soo glad I finally know what C25K means now. I need to work on distance and saw the web link from someone for one hour runner...the post I later realized is 2 years old, but I got the 10 week workout schedule. Anyway, I am running now and may be posting here all by myself. I ran 6 miles last week and yippee, the bad news is it took me an hour. I've been running since June of this year and have done 2 5k's but wanna go further. Also, I'm fat! No, I really am..gotta lose about 50.

Hello One Hour Runners...

I am almost done with C25K (which is a long way from running an hour).

But I am going to adopt and adapt the ONE HOUR RUNNER schedule to fit who and where I am. Hope to post often and soon!

Have a good day!

Hi Waddlers!

I am back on the road this week. I had a lot of creaking and cracking of bones last week so I laid off the runs. Feeling good so far and had a good run today. If all goes well I have a 5K scheduled for Sunday. Have a great week!

I've just completed W1D2 of the OHR. It's seems like a pretty aggressive program. I'm hoping that I'll be able to keep up. For those who have completed the C25K, how does this compare to that program? I hate to admit it, but I'm kind of scared.

Nice job Janey!

I will complete D2W3 of 10K training tomorrow. I was so excited that I took 15 seconds of my time when I ran 3 miles yesterday. I may be slow but I steady and I will win this battle with myself!

Hi Rookie Runners,

I have completed all three training days for week 2 of 10K training. I am trying to decide if I want to make a fourth training run or just do some power walking tomorrow. It is going to be beautiful here so I know I want to do something outside. There is a bike sale going on so maybe I can pick up a new cross training activity. I have not road in years but it certainly is an appealing idea. Hopefully weather is great where you are and Happy Easter!

Hi RR's,

It's the weekend! I hope the weather is great for running outdoors and the treadmills are free at the gyms. It's a non run day for me but I got my Garmin Forerunner yesterday so I'm tempted to run but I'm gonna wait it out. I may drop in a Bikram (Hot Yoga) class at a nearby gym. Love the idea of yoga but I don't know about the heat.

@ Janey2010 - you can do it! I got the Garmin in hopes that having the immediate feedback will help me to increase my speed. I love running for the enjoyment as well as the exercise benefit but increasing my speed will challenge me more and of course pick up the calorie burn

Hi All,

Hope everyone is enjoying some great running weather. It was beautiful in my town today. I completed W1D3 today. It felt pretty good. I bit the bullet and ordered a Garmin; had it on my wish list on Amazon and I panicked when the price went up by $10. I was afraid they would sell out or go back up to $299 which is out of my budget. I was ok with $162 plus the $6 or so for shipping (well not ok but I probably would have had to wait another season). Make good choices and have fun but most importantly...

Hi All,

Hope you are all off to a great start today.

Gymrat54 I would love a virtual running buddy for the 10K training. Here is the link for SP's 10K plan. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness
_a
rticles.asp?id=599

I am heading over to www.active.com to fine a 10K that will coincide with the end of training. SP's plan is 12 weeks but Podrunner's Freeway to 10K is 9 weeks long. Hmmm maybe I will schedule one for 9 weeks and one for 12 weeks. That seems like such a long time but off. I will be doing a monthly 5K race so it will work out. I fine I work better with a race as a goal. Well I am off to fine a 10K, get in today's yoga, and run some errands. I look forward to getting to know everyone.

To Janey2010: GREAT JOB in running your first 10K on the TM!! emoticon emoticon emoticon

To TANYAHDG: Can you tell me where I can find the "Spark Your Way to a 10K plan"? Is it a group like the C25K group or a website link? Sounds like it would be a great plan to follow to get you where you want to go - to run a 10K. I'm interested in doing this, too. Maybe we can do this together?

emoticon I have belonged to Rookie Runners for a couple of months and it has been that long since I posted to the page. I put my feet back on the ground to start training for my first 10K today so I thought I would come look for some sisters or brothers in the struggle. This is or yesterday was W1D1(WooHoo). I am using the Spark Your Way to a 10K plan along with strategies from Runner's World training and Freeway to 10K Podrunner as my guide on the road. I am scheduling a 5K for each month and looking for a local 10K to run. Also want to join a local running club but who knows when I would actually be able to train with them given my crazy schedule. The best thing is that I am determined to
do what I gotta do to get where I wanna be!

You said it! Progress is very good! Great job! You and I are running at the same pace.

I can run 4.5 miles in 60 min and 5 miles in 67 min and 5.25 miles in 70 min. After running 4.04 miles at 54 minutes for awhile, I figure why not run 6 more minutes to get to that "one-hour" mark! For the last 4 runs, I've been able to run 5 or 5.25 miles at 67-70 minutes!

I don't feel like a fast runner either the only time I feel I go fast is in the last mile...I love distance too but hopefully as I get some more weight off I will be able to increase my speed....the 1st time I ran 6 miles last week I got sick and felt like I over did it! Last night my intentions were to run 5.5, but then I thought I am going to do the 6 again only pace myself slower. I do get a thrill from both distance and speed, What I think is amazing is the feeling never changes I felt the same excitement when I was able to finish 1 mile....now 6 it is a great feeling of accomplishment IMO! :) :) :) emoticon emoticon

JDMAMMA - The one and only time I ran 6.03 miles, it took me 81 minutes. So, you ran just as far 7 minutes faster than me. Good for you. I'm just glad I was able to run that distance. I did not intend to run that far that day. I was just having a good run and didn't want to stop. I know I'm not a fast runner. My goal is not to run faster but to run further. I just maintain my speed.

Hi everyone I am a 60 min runner but have done no program....I just slowly worked my way up yesterday I ran 6 miles and it took me 74 mins! I was so proud 2nd time I have run that distance --my usual is 4 to 5 miles I can run 5 miles in 59min 14 sec a little less last Fri! I am hoping to someday be able to do 6 miles in 60 min that is my long term goal! Keep up the good work everyone!

I usually run 3 miles or 4 miles on a regular basis. It takes me 40 minutes to run 3 miles, 45 minutes to run 3.36 miles and 54 minutes to run 4.04 miles. I suppose I can run 6 minutes longer and get in about a 4.5 mile run. Then I can call myself a "one hour runner" and increase my running distance and endurance! Who knows, I might go just a little longer and a little bit further and run 5 miles. Then my average runs could be 4 miles or 5 miles! Considering this time last year, my runs were 1 to 2 miles. That would be quite a bit change - lot of progress!

I know what u mean by crashing -- I get very sleepy by 10 am and again around 3 pm. Usually I'm busy at work but coffee and a lunchtime 30 min snooze in my car helps. Can u take a power nap? It will help a lot. Kudos to getting up at 5:45am! It takes willpower to make ourselves get up earlier than we are accustomed to, so it is an achievement in itself!

Mindbend - yw, and I cannot believe you get up at 4:45am!! Go you!!! 4:45 will never happen for me. lol I appear to be managing 5:45am pretty good though. I went for my second run this am. I went .5 of a mile longer. It was pretty chill outside, I definitely need to look into running friendly gear for the cold lol

The one thing I'm not looking forward to, is that while at home I sit a lot, so getting up early means crash times, first by 9am, the second around 2pm. (the kids nap time in the pm) This is going to get interesting.

Gomamma - thanks for the advice, I will start putting my incline to at least 2%...I was putting it at 1% before.
getting up early is hard at first, but u get used to it. I get up at 4:45 am to get to the gym by 5. It's so hard some mornings still, being so dark and cold outside I just wanna stay cozy in bed... but you're doing great by having the willpower to stay up so keep it up! :)

Hey everyone. I'm still here. Looking at changing up the time of day I go running as I cannot seem to get it in. Gaah!!

So this morning before work I got up at 6am gasp. I ran for 30. only doing half my intended goal for wk4. Howver, it's only my first morning on the new schedule, so I think I've done amazing :D

Mindbend, put your incline to about 2.0 or higher, this will give you the same feel as the outdoors, minus the wind factor of course lol

Ran 3.7 miles yesterday on the treadmill, today is rest day, and tomorrow am is my run outside for hopefully 50 minutes according to the OHR plan. I hope I can get myself to wake up early since I have to be in the city by 10:30 am . .

I ran 36 minutes today. Now I just need to fit in a 45 minute run on Saturday.

It's been a good 2 weeks in that the rain has stopped long enough for me to get a good run in on the day I had scheduled.

So, Saturday, after all-morning choir practice and before evening dinner for a friend's birthday, and hopefully with no rain, I'll get in a run. At least, that's the plan.

I've been MIA for a long time but I assure you all I've been still at it with the OHR. I've had several interruptions (a trip, a long illness, etc) which did not allow me to continue the OHR smoothly. But seems I'm back on track now. Because of the cold and darkness at 5 am now, I joined a very tiny gym that just has treadmills and machines, no bells or whistles. There I run 2x a week and the 3rd time I do my long runs outside on Saturday mornings when there is plenty of daylight. I've been shocked how easy it is to run on a treadmill vs outside. I keep the incline at minimum 1% but it still doesn't match what I deal with outside.
Next week is my turkey trot!

I'm so glad to see people here. I had great plans for the OHR but it's been a sporadic few months. With the cold and dark, I'm happy if I just make it out at all.

I ran for 40 minutes last week which is my longest run so far. Two days later I ran my shortest run so far. It is really more a mental game than physical.

I'm gearing up for a run this afternoon. I should be running week 7 so just 30 minutes today and then Thursday and Friday go a bit longer.

hope your shin heals fast mindbend.

I'm still here, slow as ever. The kids keep getting sick at the Y daycare. So I'm trying to get in running at the gym and outside. We were back at the gym today yay :D I'm incorporating the one hour runner and tempo training. They are pretty similar and both are same amount of weeks long. I'm in week four now. just started. it was rough. I'm up to running a comfortable 5.5 speed on the treadmill now though. I don't always use the treadmill, however, since I don't have the fancy gadgets it's helps me gage my running speed. Let's me know if I'm pushing myself or not. Can't wait to see where I'm at at the end of this.

I'm also going to be doing my first half marathon May 2, 2010 :D

Thanks for ur kind words. My right shin still aches but nothing horrid as long as I ACE it before my runs. I repeated Week 8 this week since I could not finish it last week. I'm going out of town tomorrow - Sunday, so I hope to do my long run on Friday in her neighborhood. We'll see, I know i can get in 'vacation' mode once I go out of town ;-)

It's easy to say you're too tired, too stressed, too busy, too this or too that. Too bad. The only way you'll strip away the fat is to start by stripping away the excuses.

Sorry to hear about your shins. Hope the ice helps. I generally try to avoid the nsaids.

I went out for 40 minutes today. The hamstring did not show its ugly head at all. Woo. Still deciding whether to go for 60 on Saturday. I'm in a lot less of a hurry than I was 4 weeks ago.

Week 8 was going great, until Wed when my right shin really began aching (again) and I had to put ACE, motrin, and all that fun stuff. The ache continued until the next day, so I took the rest of the week off. It's like this dull ache, and I really hope it's not a stress fracture or anything.
Today, Monday, I ran for 30 minutes, and the ache came back but not horribly. I'm icing it now and took motrin. It's very annoying!

Back in the mid-40s today and wet, though it stopped raining a couple hours before I ran. The sun actually peeked through a couple times. I went for 40, and the hamstring felt about the same as after 30 on Thursday, so it seems to be getting better. It's a barely noticeable stiffness now. Probably not much more than normal, but I'm hypersensitive about it.

Still entertaining the possibility of going for 60 next week.

Mindbend, I had some shin issues back the first time I started running in '07. It was when I was running too fast initially. When I slowed down they went away. I suspect it was because when I slowed down, I did it by shortening my stride, not my cadence.

I read somewhere later on that a lot of shin pain is related to overstriding and the stress it puts on the front of the leg. Be careful with shin pain. If it persists, you might want to see a doctor to make sure you aren't developing stress fractures.

Went out in the rain today to get my 30 minute run in. I've decided to cutback this week, so instead of finishing up week 10 on Saturday I'm going to run either 30 or 40, depending on how my hamstring is feeling at 30.

It felt pretty good today although I still knew it was there, so to speak. Another couple days of icing and stretching ahead, with another easy ride tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

I checked out ur blog, thanks for posting it! I did Week 8 Day 2 this evening, man I don't like running in the evenings vs the mornings!! Too many people and cars to watch out for, and my energy is sapped by evening! I'm glad it's back to am on Friday for sure. My shin again is aching today, I may repeat this week next week if it's still hurting by the weekend. Gosh why do shins always have to be such a pain in the *ss????!!!!

Thought I was starting week 10 when I went out today. Ran my 40 minutes, but had some leg stiffness left over from the weekend. I think I really need to start doing at least some flexibility work on Monday even though it's my rest day. Had stiffness last week on Tuesday as well, but it was gone by Thursday.

My right hamstring freaked me out enough at the end of today's run that I'm probably going to do a cutback week of 40-30-40.

Congrats on finishing week 7. Sorry to hear about the shin. I took a couple of cutback weeks during my program when my legs would tell me I might be overdoing it. Like after week 7 I just did a week of 30 minute runs. I felt great after it and jumped right back in to week 8.

Gloves are definitely cold weather gear item #1 in my book. I run in shorts, long-sleeved shirt, and gloves down to about 30 degrees.

I'm sticking with short midweek runs and a long run on the weekends after I finish OHR this week. I mapped out my program up until my Turkey Trot in this blog post:

I am on week 8 of the program now, finished day 1 this morning. Up to 45 minutes of running last week, which I'm happy about though my right shin was not today. Gonna do a lot of shin stretches today and tomorrow.
Have a Frozen Turkey 5K coming up on Thanksgiving day. Since it's only 35-40F in the mornings here, I run in my cold-weather gear which are track pants, long-sleeved shirt, and my Nike hat and gloves. The gloves are a godsend!

I wonder what will I do after I finish this program? Run one hour 3x a week, then?

Anyway, onto Day 2 on Wed, and Day 3 on Friday. ..

Where do you find the training plan for one hour runner? Is there a link someone can give me?

Finished week 9 today. 54 minute run. I posted a blog entry last week about my training plan for after I finish OHR next week, up until my Turkey Trot, which I'm trying to decide if I should really be calling a Tofurkey Trot.

Ran my 30 in a 43F rain this morning. My cold rainy wardrobe is pretty much down at this point: shorts with a long-sleeved under short-sleeved tech shirt layer, gloves and hat.

4 workouts left till the 60 run. Woo.

Good luck on your half. I'll be running a turkey trot 5K myself. I'm a five and dimer for the next year at least.

I did my 38 minute run for week 9 yesterday. It turned out to be almost a 5K, so a little slower than the Saturday run. Not sure why. I have my 30 minute run planned for tomorrow morning and then I go 54 minutes on Saturday.

Hi Mike,

I'm training for my first Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day. Most of my training runs these days are in the 4 - 6 mi range which is in the hour range for me.

I think after my Half, this is probably the range I want to stay in. :-)

49 minute run for week 8 went great this morning. It was 46F and a little breezy. I went to a rails-to-trails path that has a nice 5 mile triangle of intersecting paths. I figured with warmup and cooldown 5 miles would be about right.

My pace is picking up with the cooling temps. Went through 4 miles at about 47:30, my first 4 mile run in a year and a half.

Doesn't look like there's any other active OHR folks? I'll keep posting and maybe somebody else will jump in to the thread.

Went out for my 30 today, continuing week 8. Was a nice easy run in 47F. Looking at my log, my 30 minute runs are very gradually covering more ground. Not sure if that's the dropping temps or me getting stronger.

I have my 49 planned for Saturday.

I'm on week 8, did my 36 minute run this morning. I'm doing the longer midweek run first since it's on 3 days rest, so 30 minutes on Thursday.

I did week 7 a couple weeks ago, but was feeling a little beat up after a race the week before that, and some serious bike time. Last week I just ran a few 30 minute runs as a cutback week to recover. The legs have their bounce back this week.
