I repeated week 1 again this week because I was not able to run the full minute each time. Last night was day 3 of week 1 and I was able to run all 4 of the 1 minutes!!!! Progress! I found that I was trying to run to fast so I slowed down my run and am able to run longer.

I would agree, follow the program from the start as it says. I learned the hard way skipping ahead can lead to injury. I, like you, considered myself to be in pretty good shape, but running is not easy on the body. These programs are designed to not just get you in shape, but also build the required strength in your joints and bones. I skipped ahead and pushed just like you want to do and ended up with stress fractures because I didn't prepare my body with the easier workouts. If they are too easy, add strength training or another cardio activity to supplement, but don't push and injure yourself.

If you have seven weeks then I would just follow the program as it says. Most programs are around 9 weeks. So if your on week four that should give you plenty of time to finish the program and improve a little on your time. If you do feel its too easy then you could increase your pace a little bit instead.

I just started training for a 5k that I want to "run" in November. I have been regularly working out on the elliptical for about 18 months and consider myself to be in decent shape. I am using the RunDouble 5k app. Sunday I did my 1st run beginning with Week 4 because I felt like the earlier weeks would be too easy for me. This is a 5-min warm-up walk with 1/4 mile run, 1/8 mile walk, 1/2 mile run, 1/4 mile walk and then repeat. This seemed very doable and I was outdoors. Last night I didn't have my phone with me at the gym, so I just walked 2 min and ran 8 minutes. I wanted to do this 3 times, but I got awful stitches on both sides of my stomach, so I suffered though only 2 intervals. My question is, if I go back to my app, then I am actually going backwards because my 8 min runs last night were equivalent to about 3/4 mile. Should I skip ahead in the app to another week or since I was getting side stitches, just continue on with Week 4, Day 2? I am so bad about pushing myself, but I also really want to be able to run the entire 5k. The race is in 7 weeks.

She believed she could so she did

I am going to hold you to that "it does get easier and easier"! I did restart week 1 last week but still wasn't able to do a full minute run each time so I am re-doing week 1 until I can. Yesterday I did run longer than any time before and actually did do a full minute for one of the rounds. So I was bolsterd by that but still can't see how I am ever going to be a runner. Thanks for the encouragment!!!

I did this program all the way through not quite a year ago but then quit running :(
Im starting back at it now and slowly working my way back to where I was before.

Those first few weeks were hard in the beginning and I felt like there was no way I was gonna be able to run even 5 min but it does get easier and easier and you realize you can do way more than you thought was possible.

Thanks for the encouragement. I did week 1 then came down with a chest cold so did not do anything for a week. I have restarted this week and have done 2 days. First day was just trying to get my lungs to take deep breaths. Day 2 still struggling to run for 1 minute each time. I am determined to keep at it!!

PHOOANN:

I did this program over the summer, and you definitely can do this. I used to run many years ago, but hurt my back and had to stop. Finally, last spring I joined a program that helped me with my back issues and I'm now able to run again. I got stuck at 8 minutes run, 2 minutes walk for several weeks. When I asked how to increase my running time, they told me to run slower. I slowed down a lot, 13 minute miles to 15 minute miles and was able to run the 15 minutes. Now I'm back to my 13 minute or faster miles and still running for 15 minutes.

Even if it's just a bouncy walk, keep at it. That's how I get up the hills in my area too.

Good Luck!

Did week 1 workout 2 on Wednesday. I was able to run for 1 minute 1 of the times but the other times it was still 50 seconds. I am scheduled to to workout 3 today but will be unable to. I will do it tomorrow. Shooting for 1 minute every time!

So did week 1 workout 1. I was not able to run for a full minute each time but I will keep trying. I know this is a 8 week program but am in no hurry to complete this in that time frame. So I will do week one until I can run 1 minute each time and then progress from there. I also don't want to push myself to much and end up with an injury. Right now I am doing these on the walking trails at work where there is little traffic so no one sees me and I don't feel like a fool. But as the weather turns to fall and then winter I will need to move in doors and run on the treadmill at the gym. My goal is to be able to run a goodly amount so I don't look like a total rookie and to have some pounds off by then. Hope the weather holds out for a long time!

They really are referring to couch potatoes, and it really can be done. Just don't push yourself. If you can't jog for the specified time, slow down until you can keep it up. After you've got your time up, then work on speed.

I am so apprehensive about this, I'm starting to obsess. I am not a runner and I really have never had a desire to run. I once mentioned that the only reason I would run would be if I could run through Lambeau Field. Well guess what? There is a 5k that runs through Lambeau Field and my sister wants to run it but would like to run it with someone. So promised her I would do it. It is not until spring but I want to start running after Labor Day and take my time. I am not in shape and would also like to see some weight loss with this. In prep for next week I started using my elliptical. This is a machine that a couple of years ago I could go full on for a half hour and now I can't do 10mins! How am I suppose to start running if I can't do 10mins on the elliptical? I know the program says couch to 5k so I am hoping they really are referring to couch potatoes! I am so scared that I won't be able to do this.

Hi all; new here!

Has anyone done the NHS couch to 5k program. I got it free off of iTunes. I got it because I liked the soothing voice of the woman who tells me when to jog and walk; crazy huh?

I just did W2D1 for the first time today. It was challenging, but I did it!

My question has to do with consistency. I don't work a regular schedule. Some weeks I'm up at 4:30am to get to work by 6:15, and other days I don't. On those early days, it's too dark to get in the training. Can I still get to the point of doing the whole program if I can't do it 3 times a week?

I finished the couch to 5k. I ran a practice 5k on July 4th that was a completely flat course. The 5k that I originally registered for is this Saturday. It's supposed to be extremely hot, and I"m hoping that most of the course is in the shade since they are park trails.

I did W1D1 tonight. I was so nervous when I started, completely unsure if I could even jog for 10 seconds (let alone 60), but I did every single jogging portion! I really surprised myself. :) It was kind of tough, mostly because I felt so heavy. You can really feel every pound of weight when you jog. When I walk and such, I don't notice it, but when I jog. Oh wow...

I just completed week 7 day 1 of c25k! That's 20 minutes of running, then walk, then 5 min of running, and then I added a few extra minutes of running at the end. I'm so proud of myself! 20 min is still a long time to run, but it is possible!

Hello, all!

I am on Week 4 Day 3 - to be done today on treadmill. Jogging for 5 minutes is an accomplishment for me!

I really don't like running but my goal of doing a 5k in late spring is keeping me focused,

Good luck and let's keep running!

Today is week 3 day 3 for me. On my last run I actually did 4.5 minutes nonstop, which seemed like a lot ... until I peeked and saw that week 4 day 1 has 6 minutes of nonstop running :) But so far it has all been very doable (and if it doesn't feel good, I repeat the day). Very happy with my progress so far!

ive been running for about 2 weeks going on to week 3
I have never been a runner in anyway shape or form and from doing run 1 minute walk 4 to run 2 minutes walk 3, Ive come to a point where i feel i can call myself a runner.

While i was on the treadmill yesterday running my 2 minutes i was thinking about how this coming week i will have to run 3 minutes i started thinking about how i wouldnt be able to run that long and i was concerned, I got lost in my thoughts and when i look down i realized i had just ran 3 minutes hahaha!

I'm about ready to do it again. I worked my way thru it (still very slow, so didn't get the distance for the time) before, but let it get away from me. I'll have to do it on a treadmill, which isn't the same as actual road, but better than nothing, right?

Going to require that I get to bed at an early hour so I can do it before work tho'.

I made it through the 27 minute run on Christmas! (That relied HEAVILY on my willpower - oh my!)

Resting today (from running) and will tackle the 28 minute tomorrow! I am ready to complete this program - goal by the end of the month!

You can Totally do it!
I understand the mental part of this... I am actually on my 4th time through the C25K program... though I must admit that I have cheated every time except this one. I have dropped to a walk at times when I didn't think I could go on. I have learned that most of my struggle is really mental. Mentally, I don't think I can do it.

So, if I can do it (the girl who AVOIDED all running my whole life), so can you! If you have to repeat a day (even 3-5 times) to get yourself to actually run the intervals, I suggest you do it! It will feel like such an accomplishment when you DO get it!

That said, I did Week 7 Day 1 (again) last night. Almost gave in and walked, but I didn't! So excited to actually finish the program without cheating this time!!

I am on week two of Couch 2 5k and start the second day of it tomorrow. I'm feeling a lot of mental and physical challenge even with running for 90 seconds but I'm glad to be pushing myself to do it.

Had some knee pain earlier this week... rested on Tuesday, then did Week 4 Day 1 last night (on my treadmill - with my "old" shoes).

Really starting to get back into the groove of running. I'm finding some sort of inner strength this time and the 6 minute run didn't even phase me.

Finished Day 2 yesterday... feeling good. I pushed some of my runs more than normal... which made them harder, but I made it through and didn't quit (drop to a walk) on any of them! I even ran 1 minute + at 8mph!

Two days of week 3 done now - both on my treadmill.

Pushed myself during the runs - up from my comfortable 6mi/hr to a 7... even did one 90second segment at an 8! emoticon

Looking forward to the last day of week 3 tonight. (the rumor is that it is going to be partly sunny today - maybe I'll even get to do it outside - that would make my dog happy!) emoticon

I'm just getting back into running - after 2+ months of moving etc and not making time or having the energy to even think about it.

My niece got me back on vacation and started C25K again. Last night completed week 2 and felt really good. I ran all the prescribed segments (plus added one at the end). Feeling good today, slightly sore, but not in a bad way. Can't wait to start week 3 again tomorrow...

On May 6, 2012 I did my first 5 K at a time of 42.51. I was slow and I received a wonderful/fantastic last place finish .

After the 5 K I continued to do 5 K for 3 times a week but last thursday I really felt a mussel that is in the top part of my leg in the front right were your leg attaches to your pelvis I was feeling sharp pains so Last saturday to today I have not ran. I went to my massage therapist and using my stretches and so today I think it might be of for me to start running. I believe that the reason I got hurt is because I had pushed doing the 5 K to doing 5.5 K so I think I did to much. SO NOW I realize that the C25K free (Coutch25k) App from Zen Labs really did help me manage not overdoing my training. So I just downloaded the new App 26.2 for pink for a full marathon from the same Zen Labs. It starts off with 5 min warm up walk. Then run 3 min/walk 2, repeat 7 times, then cool down walk for 5 mins. total of 45mins.

My question is I have missed 4 runs up to yesterday so should I start and do the C25K 8 week program or start the new App 26.2 for pink from Zen LAbs which is the same web-sight I used to get the App for Couch25k 8 week program. I really do not know what to do. I have proven that if I try to run on my own I try to do to much which ends up in injuries.

Also Since I have not ran my 4 running days my knees hips, quads, hams, calves ankles are sore which were not really bothering me before. Is it possible that do to inactivity that the mussels are re-acing to the lack of activity ?

My son who is 17 I just bought a pair of runners for him as he wants to start running.
My Daughter who is 15 said yesterday she will try running with me today. So with that in mind I am thinking that I will start the Couch to 5 K again. I want to build there confidence that they can do this to.

Thanks
Deanne

That is SO exciting! I can't wait to hear all about it. Now relax this week and don't get anxious about race day. Are you going on your own or with friends?
