I know this is late and the race has already happened, but I used the couch to 5k plan from the RunDouble app.

And keep your pace slow. Really slow.

Never let success go to your head, and never let failure go to your heart.

Make time, or make excuses. The choice is yours.

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

PhooAnn, I would suggest you slow down if you can't run a full two minutes. Don't worry about making a fast time, at this point you just want to work your way up to a long time. Let speed wait, it will come.

As you can see if you scroll down this string I posted to this back in March with a goal to run a 5k in May. I was not successful. I had difficulties finding someone to cover for me with my Dad so I was only able to get out like once a week. Then I just gave up for like a month. Someone once said if you sign up for a run that that would motivate you to keep going so I signed up for a run. Now the run is 4 weeks away and I have only been able to get out still once a week since I signed up. This week school starts and I take a class in the evenings two nights a week. This is non negotiable and my family knows they have to pick up the slack with Dad though he could be left on his own one of the nights. My class is over early enough this semester that I will be able to go the gym and take a strength class and get in a run. So I should be able to run three times a week. Here is my problem now. I am doing the walk/run thing but currently I am not able to run for more than 1 1/2 minutes at a time. I did find a program to condense my training into 4 weeks in time for the race but the first week says run 2 minutes each time the first day. If I can't run that now am I kidding myself that I will be able to do this? I really haven't seen any progress so far to be able to even get to to 2 minutes let alone 5k. I am not finding this fun and am finding this a little discouraging which makes even harder for me to get up and go.

I am going to start running in small increments again tonight. I just got signed up for another 5K on September 14th but haven't practiced since my last 5K on June 6th due to (the worst ever) shin splints. I was able to run the first whole mile of the last 5k and intermittently from then on. I am hoping to run at least the whole first half of this one although I am very worried about the pain starting back up. emoticon

Starting teh C25k today. Have done some of this already since my weight loss coach has me doing the interval walk/jog on the treadmill 3x a week, but she has challenged me to train for a 5 k race this fall. I am 53 this week and I hope I can do this. Guess I just have to take it One Day At A Time.

Decided to use the spark people 5k your way. Seems like a good program. Day 2 of week one is done and I found it good. I maybe should have started with week 2 but I'm going to finish out the week anyway.

Did week 5 last week and after having only just gotten started again after 6 months, my shin splints have been back with a vengeance. I haven't been able to run since last Tuesday and even just walking hurts. I have a 5K on the 7th so I am just trying to rest and hope for the best on that day.

I started this back in October then my father had some medical issues and now I when I am not working I am his caregiver. But I have neglected myself for 6 months and some test results from my Dr. have come back with a wakeup call. So I carved out some time for me this week and started this again. I have completed week 1. On to week 2. I have two 5Ks coming up in May that are my goal. Next is fixing my diet.

I loved this program. I completed it this time last year, and increased my running speed by 1 minute. then my back broke, so it's time to boot up again and complete C25K again. I love to run now, my physical therapist insists I don't do it, but I can't stop until I have to...

The app from zen labs c25k is the best because the whole thing is free not just the first few workouts. It tells you when to run, walk and talks over my music. They have a 10k and halfie too.

I went to new balance and paid $120 including inserts. They were the best because I found out why I get shin splints and also have prevented plantar fascitis which I am prone to. If you have ANY foot problems I would go there. Not selling them, but my NBs never fail me.

Shoes do make the difference. I got shin splints from my $20 Payless "running shoes" but then I bought a more expensive and well worth it pair. Keep it up, even walking is great. When we do a 10K I will probably do 9 min run/ 1 min walk intervals so I can finish.

Been sidelined with shin splints. Made it through Week 1 though and that's progress! Since I know I can't run at the moment should I drop out of this Team and come back when I can try again? I got the Week 2 training schedule this morning and should be running today but I know I can't do it. I walked 3 miles yesterday to try and work out the soreness but it clearly didn't do what I had intended! I iced my legs for an hour last night, that helped some. I know now I will have to buy some running shoes....these I have aren't working...

Good for your husband! I hope he meets his goal. emoticon And I think it's great that you're running, too! emoticon

My husband is having a midlife crisis and wants to run a marathon by age 45, 5 years from now. I don't run, I hate running, BUT since the c25k I've done two fun runs. We did Run or Dye Houston and today, Monster Mash. I run so slow, 36.04, but again I've never run before a few months ago and I'm 4'11" so I'm proud of me. Everyone hang in there, I've "cheated" on the program, but I've not given up in the races so I know under pressure, it is achievable. It feels so good just to be out there. I am positive running is in the blood and my blood doesn't carry that gene. However, accomplishing something like this is a rush! We will do a 10k early next year!

Run or Dye Houston Sept. 14, 2013 (31:28 but I don't think they measured the 5K out)
Monster Mash 5K Oct. 6 2013 (36:03)
I can do it!

Thanks for the tip about signing up and paying now for a race. I never would've thought to do that.

I need to replace my treadmill belt.. The rains have started, and I'm not feeling like fighting it.

I took the next step....I registered for a 5k on Nov 17. My goal is to run the entire thing, but I will allow myself to walk if I need to. Lately I have been getting terrible side stitches, so I need to figure out how to stop getting those!

The couch to 5k programs are pretty awesome, I like the original podcast by robert Ullrey from coolrunnings.com but for some reason its hard to find now. but theres a ton of free apps ect out there now.
As for running the 5k I would suggest signing up and paying entry fees in the next week or so for an event in the end of November or December(if its not too cold there), then no matter what you'll have to stick to the program and even if you cant run the full 5k by the event you can still go out there and run/walk/crawl your way across the finish line emoticon
For me knowing I have to compete in the future helps me stay on track in both dieting and exercising.
Good Luck!

My goal is to run a 5k before the end of the year. For years I've wanted to be a "runner" and now I've decided to start doing it. Wish me luck! Any support or advice would be appreciated.

It probably is a no-brainer if you've been running since you were a child. Those of us with a big gap have lost touch with our bodies, so we have to think about it.

Thanks for the great advice everyone! Running should be a no-brainer, but there I am finding there is actually a science to it!
