I feel like giving up. My infection has progressed into pneumonia, even on antibiotics! Instead of starting another round, the doctor prescribed Symbicort, a turbuhaler and ventolin on an as needed basis. This is really helping, but in the meantime, I have stopped running again. I really think I need to stop running permanently, try to stay healthy for at least 6 months and get my immune system strengthened. I have continued with my echinacea and the Emergen-C. So, I am going to stop posting here until I can say I have been consistently healthy for 6 months straight.

Well, I am a few weeks into the next stage of my Marathon journey, and it is going okay. My breathing has been quite laboured and getting progressively worse, so I went to the doctor today and he confirmed my suspicions that I am indeed in the throes of upper respiratory infection..... AGAIN! I was talking to a couple of the folks at the run last night, and got some suggestions. So, I went to the drugstore to get my prescription filled and checked out their vitamin department. The two suggestions I got last night were to add echinacea and Emergen-C to my regimen. So, I bought both, and I am really hoping these two things will help me strengthen my immune system short term. In the meantime, I intend to eat more vegetables, lean protein, and avoid all the sweets and salty treats. I know that these changes will make a more sustainable impact than the supplements, but I really need to do something right now and get healthy again. I plan to continue with my training for the 10K, but to keep my pace slow so as not to overstress my system while I get healthy again. Getting lots of rest is on my agenda too, but sleeping at night is not going well right now. Establishing and maintaining a regular bedtime and risetime will be instrumental in improving my sleep. Also, my left leg still aches quite a bit from the injury in February, but I am starting to see some improvement again and I am feeling optimistic that it will eventually dissipate.

As for the running, my pace is improving all on its own as I knew it would. My current pace is between 14:30 and 15:00 miles. I creep up to the 16 minute marker when my runs get longer, but I expect that for sure. My long term plan is becoming clear for me. I will run the 10K in the fall, then train for the same HM I ran in the spring of 2010. I imagine that I will have a little bit of time in between the 10K and starting to train for the HM, but I will still keep up my base. After that, I will likely try to find another HM to train for in the fall and then run a 30K in the Spring of 2014 before starting my training for the Full Marathon which I plan to run in the fall of 2014.

My current training steps up next week to 4 runs a week with the addition of a 20 minute run on Mondays. This Saturday the long run is 6K and stays at that distance for 5 weeks. I am nervous for the long run, and even more nervous for doing 4 days a week. I will just have to try it out and see how I handle it! I love being part of a group, it is inspiring to see other folks with big goals and hear about their training. One of the ladies in the group who comes out on Tuesday evenings to work with the youth running group is training for a marathon in November when she intends to qualify for Boston! I just love being a part of a group with such a varied list of goals. The Learn to Run group comes out Tuesday evenings as well, so it is great to support folks just starting out too!

Update: I am still feeling some discomfort in my left leg since falling getting off the chair lift, but I am not letting it hold me back.. I imagine it will go away in time. In the meantime, I have returned to the world of running. I joined a learn to run program at a local store, looking to meet some other runners. Yesterday, I did the Saturday scheduled run on my own due to schedule conflicts with the kids. I had to stop and get out of the rain after the first mile, but when it finally let up 45 minutes later, I was back at it. I completed the 5K planned distance with no walk breaks during the run, it took me just under 50 minutes. I am going to join up for a new session to train for a 10K distance, that begins June 10. I intend to run the Terry Fox Run 10K in September, and I know that being smart about it means it will be a long time before I run a marathon. I am still going to do it, just make sure I build up to it responsibly!

No running since I last posted, I really wanted to give my body the proper time to heal from the sinus infection, avoid pneumonia. So far so good. However, I sustained a bad bruise on my left hip 9 days ago when I fell getting off the chair lift on my oldest childs ski trip for school. I walked 45 minutes yesterday and today, and it felt good, but my hips are aching and tired now. I will scale it back to 20 minutes for the next couple days and then take a rest before I try 30 minutes daily walking again. I am not giving up on this dream!

My running buddy has been such a great friend. We have kids the same age, and we chat about that, and she tells me about any issues she has with her older child too. I probaby wouldn't be a runner if it weren't for her, because I was close to giving up at the beginning when she offered to help motivate me. Now, we pick each other up when we fall down and hold each other accountable!

I am feeling fine after that run, it was all good. However, I went to the doc yesterday,, and he diagnosed me with a sinus infection. The good news is that the kidlets are healthy! I did no exercise yesterday, and again today. I want to be healthy enough to run on Sunday, so I am not going to push. I hope things are well with you!

My run today was very emotional. I didn't want to go to start with. But, I told myself, and hubby, it is for the good. I am not going to get healthy again by sitting on the couch! I made myself a new playlist, layered up, and headed out. I figured that if I am going to reach my goal of 5 miles a week, my Sunday long runs for February will have to be at least 3 miles. It was really tough to convince myself to continue running after the first two, but once I got into that third mile, I really hit my stride. I told myself, self, if you can run 3 miles today, push yourself just that little bit extra, and make it a 5K. So, I did! It was really tough, but I got it done.

I put some inspirational songs in my playlist:The Climb by Miley Cyrus, I Believe I Can Fly from the movie Space Jam, and Firework by Katy Perry. At one point, I had tears running down my face from the emotion. I actually felt hope growing in my heart. Hope that I will achieve this immense goal. No matter what I have gone through up until now, I won't give up!

Hey girl. The weather has been pretty crummy here too. Rain, then freeze, then snow on top, then warm up and it all goes away! Crazy stuff. January was a really tough month for me, my husbands Grandma passed away, and I was really close to her. I also spent a lot of time visiting her at the hospital in the last two weeks of her life, with the last two days being there as much as possible. I was with her as she passed away, and I really miss her. I found myself far too busy and preoccupied to eat right or exercise, and my body is telling me so, with pain and some weight gain. I am finally starting to get back to a routine, and it felt awesome to get my run in yesterday. How are things with you?

I had an awesome treadmill run today. It is the longest run in terms of time that I have done in a very long time. It was 4 miles in one hour, I am totally proud of my endurance. I am really tired this evening for sure, but it felt great!

January mileage with walking included.

1-2 : 3.44
1-7 : 2
1-8 : 4.41
1-11:1.8
1-27:1.83

total for the month = 13.48 miles

The good thing for you is you're not coming off any major injury! Your body will remember what to do and the training will be easier this time around.

Way to go on the mileage counter. Mine for January will be zero. Did you know I broke one foot and sprained both ankles over the holiday? Yep. Chipped talus. Out of commission for minimum six weeks. I'll train vicariously though you, kay?

Thanks Kirsten! I dug my mojo out of the cave it has been hiding in, and I am feeling really motivated. I will definitely be calling on that mojo on the days when my motivation has waned.

I did my first run of the year last night. I ran on the treadmill for 45 minutes and completed 3 miles running. My warm up was .23 and my cool down .21 so the total distance for this run was 3.44 miles. I struggled often and felt like giving up often, but I stuck with it and got it done. Afterwards I did some upper body ST, I could really tell I have lost most of my muscle tone, I couldn't even complete one single triceps dip bent legged. Something to work towards! I will run again on Thursday to give myself a few days to rest.

January mileage with walking included.

1-2 : 3.44

total for the month = 3.44 miles

Thanks so much for your concern Nancy. I was running 2 days a week consistenly up until September when I developed pneumonia. Since recovering from that, I was running once a week on a regular basis, but the holidays got in the way. I did run a 1/2 marathon in Spring of 2010 so I am aware of the training intensity for that. I am sure that the training is more difficult for a marathon. I will definitely consider waiting until Spring of 2013, depending on how my training progresses. Thanks again for your input!

GODDESSOFHOME,

How long have you been consistently running recently?

Running a full marathon is a great goal, however, if you have not been running consistently for at least a year, you may want to consider rethinking your goal to maybe Spring 2013. I am not trying to rain on your parade, because there are programs out there that promise to take you from a non-runner to a marathoner in a matter of months, but most running experts do recommend more time to build a solid running base before running a marathon. This is a big fitness quest, much less the weeks and weeks of training involved.

Your body undergoes many changes when running, however, you cannot rush the process. Your goal is to train well, and hopefully injury free. But by increasing your running mileage before you body adapts to the rigors of the sport leaves you at a much greater risk for injury.

RUN SPARK STRONG!
Coach Nancy

I am going to start training to run a marathon this year, probably find a race in September or October. I haven't been running for a couple of weeks, and only once a week leading up to that. I ran a 1/2 marathon in Spring of 2010 and I lost my focus after that. Now, I am ready to regain my focus! I will post my training runs, and probably some walks too for the first while until I get more conditioned. Anyone who is also interested in training for their first Marathon is free to join me here! Happy New Year folks!
