Hi Lab-Lover. :) Just so happens that my sweet little pup is a lab mix. And, I definitely have had runs where she slowed me down, but generally I do enjoy bringing her along. On the days that I choose not to, I have tried to take her out afterwards with me on a nice easy cool down walk - or in her mind - a smell walk. Lol. She gets to stop and smell whatever she wants. :)

Vanessa - that's a wonderful idea. I'll look into that possibility. I know that a coworker participated in a 5K training program with a group about 2 years ago - I should ask her where she found the group. Thank you for reminding me of this option. Fantastic idea!

I find, for me, running has to be somewhat of a social event, or I won't stick to it. Strangely enough, I'm a pretty quiet person who LOVES to have me-time, but when it comes to running, without my running pals I have no motivation whatsoever to get out there and hit the pavement. I am fortunate to have many 5k programs (paid) and unofficial (free) fun-runs in my area, so I'm rarely in a position where there isn't something going on to get me out the door. If you're having trouble on your own and there isn't a 5k program that you can join, I'd suggest either looking for local running stores that have weekly fun runs and/or finding a local running club. I hope you find something that works for you!

Just some advice on the pup... I love my pups, but when I was first starting to run, they did NOT come with me. I really needed all of my focus and energy on me to make it through the training runs, rather than having to engage in the start/stop/tug/pull/sniff routine of my dogs. You can always take your pup for a walk as part of your warm up or cool down (I recommend the latter). And then once you're comfortable running, you can take your pup along...

Oh my, that does sound fantastic. Maybe I'll have to look into one of the C25K mp3's after all. Nothing like someone else's voice pushing you forward and cheering you on.

Yay for getting out there!! You're doing great tracking by yourself..kudos to you because I couldn't do it. I found I got VERY bored and had trouble remembering how many times I had walked/ran etc. At least you can keep track. I loved having someone tell me in my ear "okay, now you've only got 10 more seconds..you can do it" LOL!

Congrats on your run today! emoticon

It's Saturday, and I did my FULL program this morning. I didn't bring pup this morning and my run was a lot easier. I think I'll bring her tomorrow though - I felt a little bad when I left, she really wanted to come. Poor pup.

I don't have the program on my iPod, I've just been using the clock on my iPod or phone. Though - I do have an app on my phone called "jogtracker" which I should have been using all along. It tells you every minute and every mile that you do - so I could have just been listening for when to stop running rather than trying to see the iPod clock while I'm running. Lol. That was heard trying to squint at the tiny iPod clock up in the corner while bouncing down the street.

I asked my boyfriend for a stop watch for my birthday too - so hopefully that'll be another option.

Aww, I'm so sorry you had problems with your dog but you did go out and run!! Good for you! Do you have the program on an ipod or mp3 player? I found I couldn't do it by trying to time my walks and runs so I downloaded the free podcast on iTunes, C25K by Robert Ullrey. There are others out there.
I hope to hear how your run goes tomorrow. emoticon

Way to go, in getting back out there Danielle. Sorry that the puppy was holding you back though.

And so cool that you are doing the Live! meeting at 10:00 AM. Did you know I will be leading that one? Hope to see you there!

Thanks for the advice Valerie.

I was able to get up and go out for my run this morning. I debated on bringing my 1 year old puppy, Ali, and decided I would. I asked my boyfriend if he thought I should and he said, "She was good last time right?" Yeah... "Ok, so keep her going with you." So I did.

Bad idea. I was supposed to do walk 3, run 2 and repeat 5 times. I got through the first three with some struggles - half the time she was dragging me and the other half of the time she got distracted sniffing at something and I was dragging her. She was NOT doing good this time. About a minute into my 4th run repeat - she stopped and had an accident, a messy accident. :(

Needless to say, we could no longer continue on. I had to clean up the mess as best I could and turn back toward the house.

In any case, I'm glad I did what I told myself I would do. I'm going to get out tomorrow morning and run too. My plan is to get up at 8:45, head out for a run (without Ali) and be back in time to join the 10AM SparkPeople Live! meeting on Live Mind.

There's no way I can run later in the day. By the end of the day I'm too tired and find waay too many excuses.
One thing I find that works for me, I have about 1/2 a cup of coffee before my run. Kind of wakes me up and gets me going. I set my alarm for 30 minutes before I want to run and I also check the weather and make sure I know what I'm wearing before I go to bed.
Just like you talk yourself out of running, make sure you tell yourself when you go to bed, that you're a runner and you run and tomorrow you're running no matter what emoticon ! Try and remember the feeling of accomplishment when you're done with your run. And, just like the other poster said, you can repeat a week here and there..I did. I can't tell you how many set backs I had and started at week 6 numerous times.

Thank you all for the advice. I definitely think morning workouts are a must for me. I do find it difficult at times to wake up early enough before work to get a workout in, but I just need to get to bed earlier. Not to mention, when I do workout in the morning, my entire day is better - I feel accomplished and proud that I actually got up and got moving. I wish that great feeling was enough to get me up and running the morning, but alas it's not. I really need to work on my will power and motivation.

I never really thought to invite a friend to do the program with me - I guess I just figured that we'd be too different in our abilities. Maybe I should get in touch with some friends and find out if they're into the idea of exercising together.

I used the message boards at the time, and kept checking in with my progress. There were others using the message thread who were at different weeks than I was, but we all cheered each other on. We were able to support each other through the process.

Like you, I need to do my workouts in the morning. I just never know what's going to be happening through the day, so they need to be done and off my list! I've read that some people even wear their workout clothes to bed, so that in the morning, they just need to get up and they're already ready.

Is there someone who you could call on that might go through the program with you? It's really hard to blow off a workout when you know that there is someone outside waiting for you.

Also, if you aren't ready to move to the next week, stay on the week and repeat it. There is no harm in that. Just don't let it be a mental game, where you tell yourself you can't, when you really just need to try.

Until running becomes a habit for you - here is a suggestion that helped me. Pay yourself let's say $1 or any amount you like for each time you stick to your plan. At the end of your training - you should have some $$ in the training kitty - then use that $$ to go out and buy something new for running.

I have definitely found that for me I HAVE TO run first thing in the morning. If I put it off until later in the day then chances are good that it won't happen. Running in the morning is what has helped me to be consistent. You are on the right track -- finding the best time of day is key. You can do it! Good luck!!

Danielle, it will be OK. Everyone is different. I used to run 4-6 miles at a time, a little walking but mostly running. Hurt myself and I am afraid of re-injuring my leg that I won't let myself run more than a mile and that is tough at times! Try increasing your running by 30 seconds and decreasing the walking portion by 30 seconds. How fast are you going? You should be able to have a conversation while running. Try slowing down and see if that helps.

Hi everyone. I'm working on training for a virtual 5K the week of 10/16 - but I'm having serious trouble sticking to my program. I should be running for 3 minutes and walking for 2 at this point - but I'm struggling with running for 2 minutes and walking for 3 minutes because I'm getting in like 1 run workout each week. I'm kind of mad at myself for not sticking to the plan.

Why can't I JUST DO IT? I can say this to myself all day long, but when it actually comes to just doing it, I don't. Ugh, I'm so frustrated at myself.

I think starting tomorrow morning - BEFORE work - I'll run. I need to do my workouts first thing in the morning because when I get home from work I have zero interest in doing much of anything.

How have you guys been able to stick to your plan?
