Okay, that sounds like an amazing way to participate! I love it! I know you will really enjoy it.

I am not all ready for back to school, but mostly. The supplies are bought, shoes and backpacks too, and I need to assess the state of lunch bags we bought last year for $20 each because if I can make them work this year, I will. I want to take them out and get a couple of outfits, nothing new though, it just isn't in the budget. The other thing I really want to spend some money on is some high end running shoes for them. They will both be eligible to participate in Cross Country, and they both want to do a basketball camp over the fall, plus participate in lots of teams at school, I want to make sure they have durable and reliable foot wear for that. I also need to locate the lunch containers. I am considering spending tomorrow organizing my kitchen cupboards. How about you? Still lots to buy?

I'm.... trepidatious, but excited about BLC. I got an invite to Azure, so I put them as my first pick.

I know what you mean about the numbers fueling the drive. I just found I was punishing myself for not showing constant improvement, so I thought I'd ditch it for awhile. I'll be back to tracking this week, most likely. So far the guts are cooperating. I have meds.

Ghost running was a term coined to express when you're running with someone 'in spirit' - lol! A bunch of my Rookie Runner and Hood to Coast Spark friends are running the Hood to Coast relay race - a 36-hour epic from the tip of Mt. Hood to the Pacific ocean. Each member of the team runs three legs each ranging from 4 miles to 8 miles in all sorts of conditions. Since it's such a rare opportunity to run it, and we can't all go, last year a bunch of us picked a 'Real' HTC runner and ran the same distances they did at roughly the same time. So we could be there with them - in spirit. Get it? Sometimes we were able to text back and forth, all us 'ghosts' hung out online durning the race... it was a blast! This year I'm doing three legs with Dani (Tigger622) - a 4 miler on Friday at 5ish pm, a 5 miler Sat at 5ish am and a last leg of 8 miles at 5ish pm Sat.

So, are you all ready for back to school!!

Hey, I did join BLC, I think I saw the link on your page, and I am totally excited about it! What team did you put for your first pick? I put Camo because I am so serious right now about getting down to business.

I did some naked running back in February when I was just starting back to running, and it was nice for sure. I still don't find running with music liberating at all, but my running buddy can't run without it. She is amazed that I don't get bored, but I just love the whole sensation of running, it makes me feel like a kid again! For me, the constant drive to improve on my own abilities is a huge factor in getting me moving. Running with my Garmin really gives me that satisfaction of being able to know in the moment what my speed is and whether I need to do better.

I wish you much luck on your runs next week, here's hoping you have no digestive issues! I am not sure that I understand the term Ghost running? Can you explain it to me?

That's fantastic! Good for you!!! I've been running 'naked' as they say - no music, not tracking time or distance... for a few weeks. I'm getting a bit tired of it, but it was definitely liberating at first. Especially since the move. I'm just getting to know my surroundings. I'm ghost running Hood to Coast next week - 4+4+8 miles over the weekend. Wish me luck!!!

Hey, did I see you joined BLC? Me too! Woo hoo!

I ran last night, did 5 miles, which is my longest outdoor run in a long time. It felt really good, especially the last mile. I got it done in 74 minutes or so, about a 15 minute mile average pace. My next run I will do 6 again, and then make it a full 10K for my run after that. I can't wait!

I still have not attempted my outdoor version of a 10K, but I have still been running. I ran 3.59 miles in 1:05 last Monday. I haven't been feeling well the last couple days, so I expect my run for the coming week will be on Tuesday or Wednesday. I have set my goal for the end of August to complete this task.

Sounds like a great move for you! The summer is coming fast! I would love to send my kidlets to camp for a week, but it's not in the books this year, I am their summer camp! You will get back to running more once you have moved, and settled in to your new home. You have a lot on your plate right now! I am going to put in a run on the TM tonight, try making it to 10K, see how long it takes and how I feel. It will be much harder on me outdoors, but it will give me a taste, and I have all week to recover!

I have 14k on the schedule for July 3rd m'self. I've been happy not to go past 10k these days but I have to start building my distance. Good luck, I'm sure you'll take it slow and run smart.

I know what you're saying about the hoopla. I'm planning to run a 10miler with my sister in Michigan at the end of August, and that's a HUGE hoopla race - but my appetite for it has really diminished. I don't want to do a bunch of races this year. They really wear me out. Plus there's the 'issues' - no, haven't solved it yet. I've been able to control it with a combination of meds, but that's not a permanent solution.

Now, you know I'm moving, right? The kids still have one week left of school and then they're shipped off to summer camp while my hubby and I pack the house. We move to Peterborough on July 14th! I'm also taking one college course (Chemistry) which takes up a lot of my time. So, running is the only exercise I have time for and it's on the back burner too.

I am running my 10K wherever I happen to be on July 3. I have my Garmin to tell me the correct distance, and I don't feel I need the hoopla that comes with an event. My long runs are my only runs, and the longest I have gone(last sunday)was 3.3 miles running and that took me 55 minutes. With that in mind, it should take me about 2 hours to run 10K! If that is what it takes, that is what I will do, and then I will work on getting my speed up over the summer and into the fall. I really look forward to this weight coming off so I can start running more than once a week. I expect to get down to about 170 before I start adding runs, and that is over 20 pounds away right now, so probably not until the end of October if I go 5 pounds a month. How about you, how long is your long run lately? Have you had any flare ups of your "issues"?

Well, my training has come to a grinding halt for the last 3 weeks. I have discovered that my body is simply not ready to be running 3 days a week right now. I am instead going to run 1 day a week, and get in another form of cardio the other 4 times I workout because the running is just too much at my current weight. I think that once I get down to about 170, I might be up for more, we'll see how things go. In the meantime, I remember that the first time I trained to run 10K, I ran one day a week and just tried to increase my time running each week. This week, I took a ton of walk breaks, I would like to eliminate that, but I was just glad to be moving again!

Goegirl, did you end up finding a training program that works for you?

Hello again! How's it going guys?
I got an 8K run in this week - Soooo happy! But, it was on a......

NOT my favourite way to run, but I don't have any stomach problems when I'm on 'da mill. So, the mill it is. The suckiest thing is that I think I'm going to have to use it for my long runs. I don't really mind the odd 5k on it, but longer than an hour...? I don't know. We'll have to see how it goes.

I saw an exercise physiologist who told me that my tummy troubles can be solved mainly by getting into better shape! Well, really? How can I do that if I can't run? Run MORE, she says! She suggests I try to get on the road for a minimum of 20 minutes six days a week. She also told me I have to slow way down and go back to intervals full time. I guess it's worth a try.

What's up with you all?

Hello gals! Just checking in - took me awhile to find the thread again -eep!

I finally broke through the 5k ceiling - again. sigh. But it felt pretty good to be back on track.

I have a question for ya. I think I built up my mileage from 5k-10k too quickly last time and I ended up with some training 'issues' that have taken me over a year to overcome. Can anyone recommend a good, slow 10k plan? Anyone try the Spark to 10k plan?

Thanks - hope you are enjoying some beautiful weather this week. We sure are!

I don't mind running if rain's predicted or in a light drizzle, but don't think I'd enjoy running in the rain. Last week I wound up walking in the rain for about an hour (wasn't raining when I started), but.....not the same, really. I DID bike in a total monsoon for 50 miles of a 100-mile, 2 day bike ride about 12 years ago, but that's only because I didn't have a choice. Not fun, but...... survived. Not crazy about running in the snow just because of the safety issue.....you never know if there's ice underneath & I'm not a fan of falling on my arse. emoticon
Have a great day, wherever you live (I'm in NW suburb of Chicago).

Do you prefer to run in good weather? Are you willing to run in bad weather? I have in the past run in a summer rain storm because I got caught out, and I even did a 2 hour run in a blizzard once! However, I seem to have lost some of my nerve lately, because if it is even threatening rain, I avoid the outdoors. Congratulations on your finish time, that is really great! My 5K PR is 32:53, but after that race (last October) I was sidelined by pneumonia. We ran the event in the rain, and I was already feeling under the weather, so I think it just did me in to push so hard. Now, I am just grateful to be able to run at any pace! I am hoping that I am able to be running when I reach my 60th birthday!

That's good time for this early in the season. I did a 5k Turkey Trot last Thanksgiving in cold, drizzly weather & was amazed I'd completed it in 38:34.17. Definitely a record for me, especially since it was 2 days before my 60th birthday! emoticon

Yesterday was week 4 day 1 for me, 3 mile run. Completed it running in 42:42. I was very pleased to have run the entire distance, and I went to the Chiropractor in the afternoon for an adjustment. How many 5Ks have you done so far Gingervista?

Hey girl, thanks for the reminder that I have to behave like a newbie to running again! Stop being so hard on myself for sure. The stretching on Wednesday really paid off, and I followed the same plan for my Friday run on the TM which was planned for 4 miles. I made it the entire distance at 4 miles/hr with no intervals up or down. It took me an hour to get it done, but I felt great about it being over.

Like you I believe that incorporating running in my life again will start the pounds coming off again too. However, I know that I have to match my eating to my running or I will not be successful at running or losing weight. My Massage Therapist suggested that my leg cramping could have been a result of low calcium or potassium as well. With the way I have been eating, I wouldn't be surprised! Yet another reminder that my eating needs to improve.

I am not surprised that your HM burnt you out, it is a long distance! Good for you that you are getting back to it now! and, you will always have that accomplishment to remember!

See, you're still thinking like a woman who runs HM's any ole' time she pleases! It's tough to start from square one again, isn't it? Humbling!

I'm so glad that this run went better for you than the last one did - you can do it! Slowly but surely. Oh, and this walk break stuff - I quit thinking of them as walk breaks and just adopted 'intervals.' Good for you for getting the stretching done! You're doing great!!

You asked on my page but I'll answer 'publicly' here... I'm doing ok - I can run 5k in about 35 minutes pretty comfortably, so I feel pretty good about that. I haven't even tried going over 5k yet. My HM in the fall totally broke me. I was doing so well, enjoying running even though I had some running-related gut problems. 10 miles was my favourite distance. Then that HM. I burnt out!

I got busy doing other things (okay, like college and moving - big things) and then that yucky winter hit - I detrained. I didn't even get sick like you did. Just burnt out. Lucky for me I only put ten pounds back on, it could have been much worse.

I'm working on a streak of 20 minutes exercise a day aiming for a minimum of 3 runs a week - so far so good. Also started tracking again. I figure running will get easier when I drop some of this extra poundage and the weight will come off again once I get back to a regular running schedule. All I want to do is a 5k/7k/10k week. Is that so much to ask?

Week 3 Day 2 complete. I did it on the TM, and used walk breaks when I needed to, got it done. 48 minutes to finish, also did some serious stretching after warm up and again after cool down.

Well, my run tonight was a DISASTER! My watch told me to stretch for 5 minutes, because I planned it that way, but I forgot and started running. Well, when I realized what I had done, I just tried to estimate the distance and kept on going. My legs were killing me though, especially my right shin and calf. As I kept running, my legs loosened up a bit, but they were still talking to me. Eventually, I ended up laying on the ground with my running buddy rubbing my legs because they seized up, my shin felt like a rock! I have never ever had this happen before. Not sure why it happened, maybe I need new shoes, but it was awful. I am going to try again tomorrow, but I will count this as week 3 day 1 over, not done, but over! Moving on!

Good morning! Good job gettin' 'er done! I was off all last week (away on a course in Hamilton) and it's back to work today. I'm going to try for a streak (maybe it will stick this time) of running any distance every other day. I'm practically at square one again. I can eek out 5k but that's IT.

So what does week 3 have in store?

I completed Week 2 Day 3 this morning with my running buddy. 3 miles outside in 40:22, had a terrific pace, but I really struggled for this one. My right calf was tight for most of the run. This is one run I was glad to have done! Start Week 3 on Monday!

Hi guys! Goegirl, yes I am definitely carving out some me time, probably too much of that and not enough of the housework! I missed you too, and I'm glad to hear you are getting back to the running too!

I don't always run outside, precious little of that lately. Most of my runs recently have been at my community indoor walking track at the hockey rink. I do use my treadmill as well when I don't have a friend joining me or when I need to get it done in the face of lack of childcare. Honestly, I will also do it on the treadmill when I need it to be an easier run, the treadmill is much eaiser on my legs!

Tuesday I completed Wk 2 D1, which was 2 miles, got it done in 30 minutes on the treadmill.
Wednesday I completed Wk 2 D2, 3 miles in 45:12, I really pushed hard for the last lap at the arena, it felt totally awesome.

I am also training for a 10K on June 4th. I can run 4 miles now (worked up from 3 miles from about 3 weeks ago). I'm not following any specific training program. I wish I could consistently run outside 3 times per week on scheduled days, but it doesn't seem to stop raining here in PA lately! So now I'm just trying to run when it's nice enough outside to run and I'm cross-training on non-run days. I hate running on the treadmill but I might just have to break down and do it!

I'm another one who is working my distance back up after a minor knee injury, and will be proceeding with 10K training in a couple weeks after I finish the 5K program.

Howdy friend!

Me me me! I'm trying to work back up to my 'easy runs' again too.

How ARE you? I've missed you! Are you carving out some time for you??

I am currently training to run 10K on July 3. I am using a John Stanton training program from his book Running. I recently completed the Sparks Rookie Runner 5K training and completed 5K in 43 minutes.

I started running in January of 2009, completed my first HM April of 2010 in 2:38:50. After contracting pneumonia in October 2010, I was sidelined for 4 months, and this is my gradual return to long distance running starting back in February. My eventual goal is to run 26.2 miles on November 16, so the 10K training is the second stepping stone in gearing up to train for that. I am not participating in events, I am simply using my Garmin to track my distance and time. Anybody else training for a 10K?

Today I completed Week 1 Day 3 which is a 2 mile run, and I completed the two miles in 28:45.
