You need to be committed to this for the long haul, staying true to yourself. If it isn't a goal you're determined to meet, little obstacles become major hurdles. Not that a personal trainer breathing down my neck wouldn't help me, lol.

Just snooped around.... the first season's "BL" has regained nearly all of his weight back, while the runner up has kept it off.
Several have admitted to gaining as much as 40 pounds back (those who are willing to admit it)...

I've been catching some articles about previous participants, and while they still look great, many have gained back an average of 10-15 pounds since their final weigh in. It's not a bad thing, and I think that it is to be expected to gain a few pounds back when they return to a "normal" life.

It makes you wonder, though, how many have gained more back.....

And besides, the point of SP is to get people to make changes that they can live with for the rest of their lives. It is totally unrealistic to think you could exercise 5 hours a day for forever. You would never have any other life. Do what you think can be a permanant change-not a quick fix.

I just got done reading the book by Jared Fogle "The Subway Guy". It was quick and to the point and very interesting. He has it right about what to do and how to do it. I'm not talking about only eating Subway sandwiches. His whole philosophy on changing yourself is unique and refreshing. I would recommend it to everyone on this site.

What happens when reality hits and their back home and workout and lose only 1-2#. They will get discouraged and probably give up. I think they set them up for future failure personally. I get disgusted when they are upset because they only lost 8 pounds in one week !! That's just sad. I'm curious to see how long their actually able to keep the weight off once real life sets in. To me, it's a show that sets them up to fail, not a real life lesson.

If you don't love yourself....how can you expect others to.

I love TBL, but I'd never do it. Too many risk factors involved. It would be like being dropped into an Olympic athlete's workout routine, without the safety net of supervision. And a lot of the exercises... jumping over knee high benches and doing push up to one arm planks on a bosu ball?... an injury would knock me out of my routine immediately!

They mention on one show that they are workingout 6 hours a day. As far as you doing that much cardio I don't think it would hurt you but something for you to remember about biggest looser they are under medical care the whole time.

I think the people who need to lose alot of weight or even just a little weight should take it easy and get a doctor's approval for health reasons so you do not give yourself a heart attack.

that is so true, we have to be able to maintain our lifestyle without all that extra effort. If we can keep a certain lifestyle without going overboard it would be so much easier.

i think its most important to find something that you will stick with...sure, working out 5 hours a day would be nice if i had a week off to jump start myself and lose 10 lbs., but what happens the next week when i'm back to work and can only squeezr in 35 mins.? i think habits need to be set that can be used for a lifetime.

I'd be patient and work on life style changes that will stick after you reach your desired weight. I've dieted and exercised like a fanatic only to gain everything back within a year or Year and a half...This time I want a routine I can handle....even if it takes me a little longer to get to my goal!

SNOOKS04,

When I was really trying to loose weight I came into that problem once. My activity level went up alt. But my calorie range didn't. So I changed my calorie intake upward and I started to loose weight again.

Perfect timing for this subject!

I am athletic. Always have been even at my highest of 267. I work out an average of about 2 hours a day six days a week and sometimes seven. This is not something new for me-I have always done this. I vary every day what I do and have a huge variety of both strenghth-training exercises and aerobic exercises. I have been losing weight since I started here 5 1/2 weeks ago hand over fist solely based on my change in diet since my body is used to the exercise.

HOWEVER, in the last two weeks I have been playing competetive racquetball in addition to all my other things and my weight loss has come to a screeching halt. Logically I should be losing even more weight because I burn almost 1000 calories more a day (three days a week)just in racquetball alone but the exact opposite has happened. Today is the first day I have weighed myself that the scale has not moved one ounce.

I now understand that my activity level is probably too high for my calorie intake. I either have to slow down exercise-wise or eat more. Well, that is not an option for me. I love to work out and it saves my sanity. It is going to be very hard to eat more when we are trying to actually limit calories but I see no other way to break this impasse.

So there you have it. Too much exercise is not going to speed up your loss. In my case it is beginning to hinder it. The good thing is that the addition of the new activity and the slowing down of the weight loss happened simultaneously so I was immediately aware of what was happening and now I can correct it.

All things in moderation. As long as you exercise and eat well you should lose weight. Good luck to you and we are all here for you.

On top of the long work outs, I read that they only consume about 1400 calories a day. I think it said they are alloted 7 calories per pound that they weight.

Everything I've read lately says that the HEALTHIEST route to go when losing weight is to aim for 1-2 lbs a week. Anything above that and you put yourself in the position for gaining it back faster. I myself have wondered about the large amounts of weight these people are losing on 'Biggest Loser', about whether or not that's healthy- but like someone else pointed out, they work with trainers and dr's who monitor them.

I never miss an episode of BL. I sure could not do the workout that they are doing, but most of the people are not close to 60 like me. I love to walk, it gets me going for the day, when I come back from my 3 to 5 mile walk 7 days a week, when weather permits, I feel so good and want to do more. It gets me really up for the day and I sure do sleep great at night when I walk regularly. I also use my eliptical and Bowflex. I am trying to get things tightened up after I have lost 40 pounds, not so easy when you are older.

They probably do exercise 5 to 6 hours a day. Sounds like a full time job if you ask me. That is why they don't have that loose skin when loosing so fast. If you loose weight quickly you have more of a chance to have that ugly loose skin.

i'd be hesitatnt at anything more than 2 hours a day (including strenght training)! i'm sure they have carefully stylized diets to make up for all the nutrients zapping away after 5 hours a day! AND health professionals there in case something happens!

Personally, I think you are better of finding that right balance that fits into your life. I love working out, but if I do too much, I start feeling burned out. When you workout hrs at a time, it's okay if it's your job ( professional athletes) or you don't have a job, but spiritual and emotional health, professional work, family, grad schoolclass & other responsibilities do not leave hrs to workout for me, since I need and want to do those other things. Ask yourself why you want to do that? It is stressful for your body and it can break down and your immunity might be temporarily weakened. Also, just because you burn more calories, doesn't mean that you loose more weight. If anything, if you train your body to get used to that level of exercise, it might stop loosing weight completely, since it might feel " in starvation mode". Usually, when people train for events, they do not loose weight, because they need the calories to properly fuel the workouts to prevent constant muscle breakdown, vitamin/nutrient depletion. It is not about dieting in those cases and any good training program ( eg. marathon training) do not recommend dieting at the same time.
It's all about balance!

I am a loyal fan of BL!! they do work out 6 hrs a day on average. 1-2 lbs a week is the reccomended healthy amt to lose for the average person but these people are obese and under constant observation and care by professionals. When they go home they are not losing those #'s every week b/c they don't have those #'s to lose anymore.

Looks like you are only wanting to lose 25 lbs. I would stick to the 1-2 lbs per week and not try to kill yourself to do more. It would be really hard to try to keep a balance with your nutrition/ workouts. You might end up plateauing b/c your body is like, "what in the world are you doing to me!? I'm going to hang onto every calorie possible!"

That actually happens a lot on the show. A contestant will work their tail off and only lose 2 lbs at the weigh in. their trainer inquires about their nutrition and it turns out that they are not eating enough calories and their body has stalled (metabolism shuts down).

I trained for and ran a marathon last year and I totally thought I would lose some wt automatically just b/c I was logging those high miles in (30 a week). I was famished most of the time and ended up eating more than usual- which is good b/c I needed the energy. I didn't lose a lb and I was disappointed at the time but it made sense to me later. I was doing something extreme and my body was needing to be fed. I'm trying to lose some now so I'm just focusing on a good balance of nutrition and exercise.

Have fun! J

I think I read or heard Jillian comment on how they work out at the ranch 4-6 hours a day. Working out that long is very stressful on your body and you have to be careful not to get dehydrated. I know when I have done 2 hours a day a few days a week and after 1-2 weeks my knees got very sensitive. I guess if you wanted to get a couple of hours of cardio a day, I would do it 1-2 times a week and maybe split it the sessions, morning and evening.

I've never watched Biggest Loser so I can't comment on the show and what they do. However, the only times that I could think of where I heard people working out for extended periods of time are professional athletes such as those going to the olympics or sometimes actors when they have to do something for a movie role. I think of the woman who played the mom in the Terminator movies, she did extra workouts for one of the movies because of how her character's physical appearance had changed.

What do you want to do for workouts? Classes throughout the day or in combination with something like treadmill or biking? If you want to just do it here and there I guess the first question is what shape are you in physically and could you do it without being tired and too sore the next day and not being able to exercise properly for a few days. I would guess that purposely doing it here and there would be along the lines of us eating properly but some days we don't have enough calories. In the long run it works against us. Like calories, we have to do it within moderation and not go overboard.

Why are you thinking about doing it this way?

The Phoenix is the symbol of hope and rebirth. Often alluded to as the Bird of Paradise, this mythical bird was the only one of it's kind. And because of this, the gods vowed that as long as The Phoenix lives, there is hope for mankind.

I may be wrong but I read some place that they exercise 5-6 hours a day for 6 days a week. The seventh day is a whatever you want to do day.

I have only caught a couple of episodes but I have been wondering the same thing. How do they lose so much in a week? Is it safe? I was just checking on another post and for me to lose a pound in a week just through exercise I would have to engage in 5 hours of fairly intense exercise.

All of the literature that I have read only recommends 1 to 2 pounds in a week....

Maybe someone else out there has the answer.

I'v ebeen wondering if it is not health or dangerous to do cardio workouts to much in one day. Is it bad to workout for 3-4 hours a day. Not that I do now, but what if I wanted to here and there, is it so bad? I know I would burn much more calories. Do the contestants on the Biggest Loser workout constantly during the day.....they lose so much weight in one week that it's hard to believe sometimes.

Any ideas?
