Hmmmm, so it appears. I managed to get my ketostix yesterday and today is my big shopping day. I picked a silly time to start with Wednesday a big travel day and a wedding on Saturday but it is what it is. I seem to lead such a busy life that if I don't just say we are doing it now then it just doesn't get done. Menu plan, shopping and travel plan for eating today!

Okay Laura, I'll bite, what's induction? I need to reduce the carbs in my life in a big way! I'm intrigued by your conversation of WEM Waterpark. I used to work at the Palace Casino and their offices used to be down by the entrance to the waterpark.

I'm using this weekend to load up with the things I need and get rid of the things I don't need. I have yet to see the ketone strips you are talking about but will look for those today. I'd like to start on my journey tomorrow but realistically it may be Monday.

I am committed!!

End of Day 5... I felt nauseous the last two days, but today I felt better. I went to Boston Pizza with my staff, and was really worried about it! I ate a snack before I went so I wouldn't be hungry and make a bad choice. I ordered soda water, and wings. I thought I was good, until i looked up the nutritional info on their wings and discovered that they have 18g of carbs in a meal-sized serving! that is without any sauce (I just got Salt and Pepper, which apparently adds 6 more grams of carbs!) WTH? I was disappointed, because I thought I was making a good choice, and felt happy that I could still enjoy a restaurant meal out, but alas, I was so wrong. So this is the first day I have been over my carb limit... I was still only at 30.2g, but still. slippery slope.

Also, I still haven't lost any weight at all!!! I have actually gained a few ounces since I started. My carbs have been between 20-25 every day except today at 30.2. My calories have been between 1200-2000 a day. I have drank all my water, and I am definitely in ketosis. What gives?

Oh yes!! Sleep is so important! I was drinking a lot of coffee and tea and was so wired from caffeine I could not sleep!! So I switched to de-caf- and now I get my sleep- with the help of a Benadryl!

End (almost) of day 3. I turned the Ketostix a little bit pink this evening. WOOT! I know I have been doing everything right, but I must say I like the proof.

Although I think I will have to go to bed early tonight, because I am feeling "snacky" already. I don't need any more food, but I definitely need sleep!

Thanks for the info Eliz and Exotec. I wondered about that Eliz... starting higher and getting down to 20, but have been basically doing that for awhile now, just not keeping track. Plus, I am kind of an "all in" person, so if I'm doing this, I'm DOING it! lol

Interesting about the urine strips on working for your Exotec... I guess I will find out! If they don't work for me, I just won't worry about testing for ketones. The last time I did Atkins (15 years ago), I just knew I was in ketosis by
a) having no appetite
b) losing weight
c) that horrible breath!!!

Today was good so far... we had the whole school on a fun day to the West Edmonton Mall Waterpark. EEESSHHH!!! And they don't let you bring in outside food. I did anyway, took the free burger out of the bun, and added the avocado, tomato and lettuce I brought. It was pretty good actually! Just had turkey, spinach and cream cheese roll-ups for a snack, and then will have last night's leftovers for dinner later.

Day 2... so far so good.

For the headache, try supplementing some salt. Our bodies metabolize differently when processing fewer carbs. Sometimes broths or consomme or just simply more salt will help. The secondary thing is that your body's likely to have little tantrums like that while adjusting to using fats rather than carbs for fuel. Be sure you're getting enough good fats in your diet.

It's amazing to note the carb counts on most everything, isn't it? You're right about that part being more of a challenge than you'd expected! I still find it a challenge...but then, I'm a carb addict. What can I tell you.

You can find Ketostix™ in most pharmacies, OTC. They work for some people; they never worked for me. The "gold standard" for ketones is the serum values, not the urine values (which is what you're testing for with the sticks). I was directed by another Sparker to a website which is offering a free blood glucose monitor which also has a ketone function. The name is "NovaMax Plus," and it really IS free. Go to their website and request it. Be forewarned though: the ketone strips are r-e-a-l-l-y pricey! Like, about $5 each. I've found them on Amazon, though. You only get 2 ketone strips with the unit, but they give you more BG strips. I don't monitor that, but it was a useful way for me to get the procedure right before I "wasted" the couple of ketone strips they sent with the initial package. I can't remember why, but they recently sent me another pair of ketone strips...perhaps the result of feedback? I don't know. If/when I buy more, it will be though Amazon, I'm thinking.

Great job!! I started out with higher carbs (around 60) and worked my way down. Now under 20 is pretty easy most days. I started in mid May

Finished Day 1. It went okay, although I only had two meals and no snacks and I was still at 22.5 gms of carbs. This is going to be tricky to get used to. I have a headache, but it seems too soon for a sugar withdrawal. See how I feel tomorrow. Taking the whole school to the WEM Waterpark, and outside food isn't allowed. I'm sneaking some in anyway, and will eat the burgers they give us without the bun. hopefully that will be okay.

Does anyone know how many days it takes to get into ketosis? I bought Ketostix, but I don't know when to start testing. I like statistics, so I think the testing will help me.
