Focus on those 12 elbees off your body and think about picking up a 10 lb sack of potatoes and carrying it around plus more, you lost that fast! Revel in it and like others said, it is science...you WILL continue to lose at some point. emoticon

What Woubbie and CalGal said.

And just to be clear about it - I've said the same things to people I don't know how many times, but when it's me that's hit a plateau, it's really hard for me to remember! It is disappointing, discouraging, annoying, irritating, and lots of other things. Unfortunately, it is also normal and expected and (fortunately) temporary.

Just hang in there. The weight loss will start again in a week or two or three.

Totally agree. The fat loss is still going on, it's just always masked behind the "weight". Always remember that "weight" is made up of a ton of variables and you don't have control over all of them every day. Stay the course and look at your overall weight trends rather than at specific numbers.

Very normal and actually expected after a big loss. Even a brief foray up to a bit of a weight gain is normal. Your body is just adjusting to the weight loss. This is where you need to just stick with it and not look at the scale for a week or two. Stay the course. It can take a week or three to adjust and then you will begin to go lower again. During these times it can be very inspiring to measure yourself to understand that your body is still losing inches. The weight is only one way to see progress.

If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.

I am half way through week 3 of induction and the scales has not moved this week. The first 2 weeks I lost 12 lbs but nothing since. Any idea's or suggestions would be much appreciated.

My gp just retired and I've had to go to a new one. She doesn't specialize in *geriatric*. I also really liked my previous gp and had had a 35 year relationship with him. Made it really tough to leave. I don't know what age is considered *geriatric*. Is it a timeframe or more conditional? I'm 62 and don't consider myself there yet. But will I ever? LOL. Maybe when I'm 80? Or 90?

My family physician is retiring and now I'm wondering if I should seek a physician used to dealing with older patients. What age is geriatric?

She's kept me very healthy -- when diabetes surfaced she's the one that gave me Dr. Bernstein's book.

Metabolism is governed by a whole slew of hormones and they certainly change every decade. My current focus is on thyroid and cortisol. Stress is a huge factor in stalling loss, both from allowing stress eating to the direct effect of the hormones themselves.

My age seems to be a big factor these days. I thought at first it was too many calories but now I'm thinking that aging contributes to a stall as well. I've been trying to locate articles and research about it.

I'd much rather weigh 300 pounds and wear a size ten than weigh 150 pounds and wear a size 20!

I agree that it's nice to have losses reflected on the scale, but how your clothes fit is a much better indicator of how you're doing. Sounds like you're doing great!

So glad to see this on the front page! I am in a post induction stall. I do see some changes on the body fat calculator on my scale in the downward move but I don't know if I can trust it or not. I did notice my clothes are looser which is nice but it would be great to see it reflected in that little window. Oh well, I'll just keep on keeping on and I'm sure I'll eventually get there.

I'm glad you found the thread, Jeanne. I think that the initial big losses set us up for failure. We expect it to continue. Hang in there, and remember all the health benefits you're gaining even when the scale isn't moving.

Ahhhhh...so nice to have found the info. on this thread. I have only been on Atkins induction for 17 days (I do eat low carb most of the time, even before starting Atkins). I lost a pound a day for the first week, now nothing since. I was even UP a few ounces during that time (but maintaining the 10 pound loss overall.)

I do a low carb eating plan most of the time, but thought something structured would help me lose the 20 or so pounds I gained BACK when I went off low carb. Atkins was my choice.

I am an instant-gratification kind of gal, so I DO try to change when in a day or 2 nothing works anymore (can you say impatient and unrealistic?) This is helping me to BE PATIENT with what I know has worked in the past and realize I did not gain all this weight in a few weeks and I just need to give it time.

Thank you for the pep talk and explanations!

I've been on a plateau for 2 wks but had lost over 27 since 1/1/15 so feel good about that. I suspect exercising more steadily may be causing my body to have to adjust to more muscle. I am going to do measurements only for next 2 wks before I weigh again because the scale is just a number. I feel great, have great energy (except today I am sick with a cold) and otherwise know I am eating right. Just trying to stay positive since I have so much further to go.

My 16 year old DD#2 started induction a week and a half ago. She dropped 5 pounds the first week....and then nothing so far this week. We took measurements last night and she's lost 2 inches total overall. She is discouraged that the scale is not moving, but I reassured her to continue on plan and the scale will continue to move! Thanks for this article to alleviate her doubts.

This is a great thread, thank you, it definitely is helpful.
I'm currently starting week 6 of Atkins (still in induction) I've lost 6 pounds in first couple of weeks, and then no weight loss (or at least the scale doesn't budge) for the next 3 weeks. I understand stalls and plateaus, but isn't this a little too soon for this?

I really needed to read this today. I lost 11 pounds in 10 days during Induction and have stalled the last 7 days. I enjoy what I am eating and especially how I feel so I have no intentions on changing this. But to see the scale move a little would be nice.

Thank you for reminding me to be patient.

I guess I'm at a "stall" or long plateau - been basically the same since November. But . . . clothes are much more comfortable(looser), energy is way up and I feel stronger overall.
Guess it's a set point, but now that I'm use to this weight, I think I'll change it up a bit so I can lose a few more pounds. This'll be my 3rd set point weight in the past year.
My theory is - it's best to get to a weight you can stay at for awhile, get use to it, then move on to a lighter weight- get use to that weight for awhile, then move on again. This has worked for me- I'm maintaining my lower weights easier every time I reduce more.
Plus- I get several months wear out of new clothes before they become too big. emoticon

Such encouraging info! I wish I could (would) stay on my diet long enough to reach a plateau!! Hoping to get more info from this team. I am mostly low carb & low calories if I stick to what I have decided to do. I see the scale go up a little, which I know is normal, and then I think I should change my diet. I just need to stick to one thing, at least for a month and see what happens!! I am soooo sick of me!!

Some of us have had the same experience - including me. I was stalled for four months. Bummer! But I was happy with the inch loss - pants getting loose, etc.

I have heard most people say to just keep on doing what you're doing until the stall corrects itself. Some say do a 'fat fast', but I could only do that for a couple of days. (I did lose 2 pounds, but gained it back on vacation.) Read as many of the older posts you can for info and encouragement during this time. Be thrilled with the smaller you for now.

I'm sure more successful others will post here soon.

I am experimenting with my nutrition right now and lowering my fat intake just a tad, still low carbs (under 30 grams) and making sure I get about 100-120 protein grams a day. I lost a pound this week (so I guess my stall is broken).

Hang in there and good luck! emoticon

lol I don't like to have those pounds looking at me if I gain any back for water or whatever..so I like for the weight to stay at a number for a day or so before I change it. I know sometimes I will jump up and down for a week before I land on a number for a few days in roll.

This is the link to the Atkins website. even tho I dont fully do it the atkins way anymore I do still eat from the atkins food list/eat. I just count carbs different than they do.

Faith - I do the same thing with my ticker. Because if I cheat and have some carby dessert, then I can gain 3 pounds the next day. Then it may take me 4 or 5 days to get the weight gain back off again.

Well I stuck with 1400 calories but I dropped down on my egg intake from like 2 or 3 in a day to only 1 every other day. I also make sure I get in all my 120oz of water each day if not more some days. I get about 70 to 100g of protein a day still tho, just from different foods.

This morning the scale was nice to me again...I have now lost 32 pounds. I am not going to add the loss to my ticker yet tho for I want to make sure the scale don't change its mind for a few days first.

This is the link to the Atkins website. even tho I dont fully do it the atkins way anymore I do still eat from the atkins food list/eat. I just count carbs different than they do.

Teresa - hang in there! Sorry to hear about your knee. I have had similar problems, and sometimes I think it's the extra weight I'm carrying around. But since I have added more fat to my eating plan, it seems to have helped with some of the general aches and pains.

Try that nutritional calculator plan that I posted earlier. You have to really read the article well to fully understand it. Like if you are having a high fat day, lower the protein and vice versa. I am trying to stay at the high end of protein and the low end of fat, with no less than 55 grams of fat. My calories will be around 1,150 daily.

This is so similar to the Slim4life program that I ended up paying $1,000 for. But it was the only way of eating that I could lose weight on. And I consistently lost 2 pounds a week. I remember they told me that eating protein was like putting another log on the fire.

It doesn't hurt to try it for a few days.

I don't know what is going on with me. I lost a few pounds but I have gained 3 back. I go to the Dr next week and she is not going to be happy with me at all for right now it looks like my loss for the month of June is only going to be like 2 pounds. I feel like I have been doing the right things and it looks like it to. I get about 30 minutes of exercise a day just not all at one time(knee). I can hear her now! I know how the all the number add up take in less than you burn crap but that just don't cut it with me or maybe I need to take in less for my body is just not burning the 1400 that I have been eating. I am going to do 1200 range the next few days and see what happens. I really don't feel like 1400 is a lot tho but I guess it is for me.

Yes, Teresa, I know that battle well. But I am glad that at least I don't go up as long as I stay on plan.

we all hate those stalls. I know I do. My loss dont even have to be big each week just the 1-2 pounds they say we should aim for would be fine with me. However I would love some of those Biggest loser weeks LOL like that going to happen ever for me.

When the scale dont go down I just tell myself at least it did not go up...That is unless it was the past few weeks. I have been loseing and gaining the same 3 pounds over and over.

Timely and very much needed for me to read...I know I've allowed carb creep but did fat fest and got back on grove.

Addictions to carbs is less a problem now, but I still crave (and indulge) with a serving of chips and salsa. It is wrecking my blood readings and I'm gaining...because that one serving is 20 carbs over my normal eating.

TIMELY to read this and get back to basics...Thank you!!

type with you later. Junebug

Simplemaw - thank you so much for this thread! It really helped me understand the difference between all of the stalls and plateaus.

Seems like stalls and plateaus and being stuck and all those frustrating things have come up a lot lately, so let's start a thread for the topic.

First, some definitions. A STALL is when you have lost pounds and no inches in at least four weeks. Two days is not a stall. Two weeks is not a stall. It has to be at least four weeks. The reason for this is that sometimes your body just needs to take a break and adjust to the weight that you've already lost. This can take a few weeks. If it's over four weeks, though, there's probably something else going on.

A PLATEAU is when you've been stuck at the same weight for a couple of weeks, but less than four. A plateau is extremely annoying, frustrating, discouraging, irritating, aggravating, bothersome, troublesome, disturbing and vexatious. It's also perfectly normal and healthy and is going to happen every now and then. Again, it's your body adjusting to the weight that it has already lost. Come on here and fuss and fume and gripe and whine, but don't sweat it. And if you had been losing weight before the plateau, DON'T CHANGE WHAT YOU WERE DOING! If it worked last week or the week before, it will probably continue working in a couple more weeks. Save the tinkering for a true stall.

A POST INDUCTION STALL is just what it sounds like, except it's really a plateau instead of a stall. Remember how much weight you lost the first couple of weeks of eating low carb? 5 or 10 pounds in a couple of weeks, more for some people? 5% or more of your body weight is not unusual. That's a big change for your body to get used to! Remember that your fat cells don't go away, they just get a bit limp as they lose fat. With that big of a change, they may call a halt to the whole process while they figure out whether everything is ok. In the meantime, they add a bit of water so they don't get any flabbier. After a couple of weeks, when they realize that they're still being fed appropriately and there are no new health issues for them to worry about, they decide that it's ok to let go of that extra water they've been holding on to. Which leads us to our last definition.

A WHOOSH is a big, sudden weight loss, usually after a plateau. You may wake up one morning and find that you've lost 2 or 3 pounds overnight. Congratulations! You've just had a visit from the Whoosh Fairy! Then your weight loss should continue, but probably at a slower rate than during the first few weeks.

This process will continue as long as you stay with low carb and are working on losing weight. You'll lose for a while, and then suddenly, without anything else changing, you'll be stuck. And you'll be frustrated and annoyed and aggravated and so on, and you'll come here and whine and gripe and complain and you'll want to change something but it probably won't matter what you change because your body is in adjustment mode. And then, suddenly and without changing anything (or even if you have changed something), you'll have a Whoosh. And the cycle will begin again.
