Yes, the fitbit is expensive. I was given mine as a birthday gift and felt it extravagant. I'm hoping it's worthwhile but I suspect it's just an expensive toy.
What I discovered by my first day's use is that my normal walk gave me half of a daily goal. So all in all I got to 8,000 steps for the day. So to get 10,000 will take more than what I am used to putting myself out for. And since I've just gained back 5 pounds since spring, this is not good news.
Today I'll go to my longer walk and see how that fares. I suspect it will be the same as far as total steps for the day, falling under 10,000. But I'll see. Tomorrow I go to a Parkinson's Foundation Walkathon which will be shorter than my neighborhood walk.
