Small things mean a lot to me, like going for a manicure, taking time for coffee with a friend, watching a movie with family - I never use food as a reward, just doesn't work for me

Your plan sounds excellent! Yes, the small treats can mean so much like the autumn walk. You mentioned you were stressed out, maybe learn meditation, it is a great stress reliever, just look on the web for free classes with free downloadable mp3 meditations. There is the Chopra Center web page or Access Insight. If you are Christian it is said praying is like you speaking to God, when you meditate it is you listening to what God has to say. They are not directed to any God in particular more on teaching you to breath and focus on staying in the present, feeling your body and putting things in focus. Keep going you have such a wonderful positive take action attitude!

I go and punish myself by hitting golf balls at the driving range with my husband.
The best part is the time I have to read while he finishes:-)

i don't generally reward myself. Something about getting praise for what you're supposed to be doing anyway. Probably my Catholic School upbringing.
But ...
When I started Marathon Training, I socked away $25 for every long run. After I ran my race in Savannah, I had enough for a Nikon D5100. It was funny to go into a store and look at my prize before the race, before I had the money and have a salesman patiently explain to me how I could have it now! Take it to the race with me! Start enjoying it right away!

Hi, I think it is especially important for women to think about ourselves and do certain things that are just for us. I am at a tremendously stressful point in my life so for me taking care of myself, eating right, exercising and the resultant weight loss/fit body coming from that are my reward for just making it through each day! I am trying so hard to simply hold things together, so when I put my pants on in the morning and they feel a bit loose and comfortable, or my stomach feels a little trimmer, the scale is down a bit (or at least not going in the wrong direction!) or I push myself to go work out and then feel better afterwards, those are all things that can pick me up a bit and make me feel good about what I am doing for myself. And that can spur me on to do other things for myself: an hour just to read and relax; a soak in the tub; a walk through the golden glow of an autumn wood...all of these things will help me to find a bit of beauty in each day or to recognize my own worth. It make take special effort to make it happen, but then I know I am worth that to myself. No better reward than that.

I haven't given myself any rewards yet. I don't have any thing planned for when I hit my goal, either. I'm on a real tight budget, so that may be holding me up.

Thanks to all for the replies, gives me some insight.
Maybe when I firm up my legs enough I'll get my ugly veins zapped, so I'll want to wear shorts again.
But then I'd blind everyone by the sheer paleness!

Its a good idea to have a long term reward - to make it worth hanging in there and then a list of smaller things to keep you going along the way. Something for every 5-10 pounds lost sort of thing. I bought my first strapless dress(since I was teenager) a few months ago and thought I looked pretty good and I got good feedback too. That's pretty affirming too.

My reward is an article of clothing, even if I haven't dropped a size. Or, a new pair of shoes, or something for the house I've been wanting. I believe rewards are good. It's positive reinforcement for an accomplishment.
The first step in getting somewhere is by deciding not to stay where you're at.

For me, a reward is time. I give myself an hour to do anything I like. Usually, it is relaxing with a book I want to read or maybe it is soaking in a bubble bath. The important thing is no telephone calls or to do lists. This is a reward worth working for!

I made of list of things for just me that I don't normally do or get for myself. A new piece of jewelry, manicure, exercise equip, etc. Use to get a special food treat. Now I'm working on getting exercise stuff.

When I concentrate on the concept of rewarding myself I will lax off conscious eating, so I have that idea saved for larger gifts that take longer to earn.
I go to the Catskill Mountains for a weekend retreat every October to socialize and celebrate being Nic Free with other friends who are in the Nicotine Anonymous Fellowship. It's a 6.5 hour drive and I adore it every year. We have a blast.
That is the kind of thing that really gifts back to me.

I like rewards, if I have reached a goal then jewelry dept. here I come.
If I have finished a project that was hard, then I look for other ways of pampering myself....getting my hair done in a salon (when it isn't needed), massage and so forth

I'm another who doesn't bother much with rewards. Compliments from friends and shopping for clothes to replace the old ones which are now too big does the trick for me!
I was in the habit of rewarding myself with food. It flashed through my mind yesterday when I finished some reports at work that I had been feverishly working on. I thought 'a candy bar'! Now I haven't had any candy in quite awhile! Where did that come from?
So I am trying to reward myself for small goals met and plan on rewarding myself with larger rewards when big goals are met. So far I have had a pedicure. I am up for a manicure.
I am very low maintenace so the manicure may never come. I have also noticed a trait in my where I say I will reward myself for such and such; and then I don't do it. I don't know what is up with that? But I usually end up doing something I shouldn't when I do not give myself the 'good' reward!
NOTE TO SELF: get the manicure, Janie.
Magazines? Books? Garden tools that you have eyeballed? Something that you have noticed and thought, 'naw, I don't really NEED that'? Use that as a reward.

One of the reasons people reward themselves for weight loss is that they have a history rewarding themselves with food and need to find a way to substitute something for food as a reward system. It's not a system that works for everyone.
After losing 71 pounds I have a lot of new clothes to replace all the ones that don't fit any more.
The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want MOST for what they want at the MOMENT.

For me it depends on if I lost a lot and need a few new clothes. I don't really reward myself either.

I guess that all depends on you... I am not a reward person either - if I couldn't touch my toes and now can I just feel good about that. I guess I do buy clothes when I lose but usually its because I need it If a person needs rewards to encourage them to look forward to getting to that goal - then
I guess if a person doesn't need that - why change?

I'm curious about this. As I've never been one to 'reward' myself. If I need something I get it. I've been pretty blessed in life not having to really watch my weight or put much effort forth into my physique until I reached my 50s… now it’s changing in ways I don’t particularly care for… (Mom always told me someday it would catch up to me!)
So, if I reach a goal of say touching my toes… yeah, I’m not very flexible... Or if I reach the goal of losing a certain number of pounds; what do I reward myself with? I’m really at a loss here, I'm not big on spa stuff, or having my nails done and things like that(I'm pretty low maintenance lol).
What do you reward yourself with when you reach your fitness/nutritional or other personal improvement goals?
Is a 'reward' really necessary?
Regards, Me Mare
