Cleaning out my daughter's closet so that any clothes that are too small can be sold at the church consignment sales I've signed up for. Most of her clothes were either bought at yard sales, thrift stores, or given to us by my mother who bought them on sale so even if I sell them for a cheap price, I'm still making money back.

got my power bill (minus 8 here sometimes) and shut off two rooms that don't have water pipes associated with them so I heat less space (but air them occasionally to prevent mold). Another room has a half bath so I keep that door cracked at the heat at 50 or less, and water dribbling. Our community forgives any water usage that keeps pipes from breaking in winter if you let them know that's what you are doing... so I let them know. Here's hoping next month's bill is better.

My daughter's friend gave her a coat she didn't want any more. It didn't fit my daughter, so I ended up with it. Most of the buttons were hanging by threads. I repaired it. It is actually a nicer coat than the one I have that is the same weight. I have started wearing it on week-days.

cheap comfies - just before bed, stick the quilt in the dryer for a few minutes... yes, it uses power, but it feels NICE before going to sleep on a 20 degree night - and I guess it's less expensive than an electric blanket (which is still less than heating a whole room).

I thought using your utilities during off-peak hours only had a financial advantage to large industries. At least around here. We have never had black outs due to power over usage, either. The only way we can save on utilities, is not to use power, or cut the use. Our house has been rated as energy efficient - we will get a tax deduction for this. I did use the oven this evening. But I often think of alternatives, as I figure that has to cost more than some methods.

I have found it hard to fill the washer to full loads. Our washer saves water [no financial advantage to that - it would be unusual for a family of four to go over the minimum water. With only two of us, we never do.] Any way, I have started finding new ways to fill a load. I think it costs the same for power whether the washer is full or not.

Today, I finished making about 3 quarts of chicken broth from left over chicken carcass. I divided it between a number of containers and put it in the freezer. I have mentioned that I did this before. I make it in the crockpot.

I'm not certain that the "off peak" use option on my power bill will work for me (cheaper power but a measuring fee), so I'm working on trying to use appliances later in the day to see if I CAN make those shifts.

As it does in some places, it gets COLD here (projected to be zero degrees F. tomorrow night), so I'm trying to do things like run laundry later in the evening.

Unless it's really cold in the a.m., I turn off the "pipe protecting" drip in the sink in the day time, turning it on at night and notifying my city that I'm using the drip method to protect my pipes. (They give a credit for letting water drip during the very cold season so water doesn't get wasted when pipes break.)

I've also noticed that timing laundry and such for later in the evening provides a slight amount of warmth in the house - this is a good way to capitalize on that.

This was a couple days ago.
Saturday was my husband's birthday and we went out to eat at Outback to celebrate. I brought more than half my steak home. Had the rest of it slice over a salad the next day.

Though I had to make a trip to the grocery store to supplement it, I had most of a can of tomato paste leftover from making bruschetta this weekend. So we decided to use the shrimp in the freezer and the tomato paste and some new stuff to make shrimp creole! YUM!! And really good for you! AND I got celery so I cut up the extras and put them in a container in the fridge for future week snacking! :)

bought horse vitamins in bulk with a friend. double checked that the price per pound really was lower where I ordered, and as we have a larger order, we saved $6 "handling" fee. So we got a good deal on the supplements, minimized duplicate shipping and handling charges, and got a lower price per pound. Split out, it saves us about $12 each or more when all is said and done - and it works a treat for hoof problems due to mineral deficiencies in the local soil.

I'm practicing minimizing my electricity use during the high use days. If it makes enough difference I will switch to the "as used" power plan. Right now it's not clear if it will help, so I'm working on adjusting behavior first!

I lock my credit card up in the fire safe unless I know I have a planned purchase! (I also combine my trips as much as possible - living 70 miles from nowhere, driving is the main way to get places, but by combining trips, I usually can get through a month on no more than two small tanks of gas.)

I mailed *back* a 'health book' I bought from an online ad-- the book was really 'drivel' and not what I was hoping for.... but would have cost me over $45 if I'd kept it!! I made my decision very *quickly* (within 2 days of receiving it), and had kept the box and all 'paperwork', so was easy to do. Phew!!!

And today I was in my 7th half-marathon walking race, and I *didn't* spend any money buying old race t-shirts for races I was not in :-). AND I'd signed up early enough for us to get a decent 'discount' on the race, too :-).

I have horses but no horse trailer. I saved $40 on a farm visit by leading the mare up and back, and got 3 miles of walking in, too!

Had leftovers for lunch. And saved my bags to reuse. Only dry products.
