Hi Gwyn and Rachel (and any others lurking out there!)

Well, April has been a strange month for me. I stopped tracking my food on my birthday April 9th when I ate a whole bunch of unusual foods at an interfaith dinner of over 200 people. From there, I went to eating carefully but not tracking. From there, I went to eating anything I wanted to eat! I ate a lot of sweets in the last few days. We had some Passover treats (both sweet and otherwise) and I have spent the last several days feeling SICK from overeating every day!!!

So here is my current plan. I am getting this all out of my system. I am not making any promises for the last few days of Passover. (We go until Tuesday at sundown, the Ashkenazi tradition.) After that, I am planning to take another day or two to clear out my kitchen and do some planning and cooking. We are going out with the extended family on April 30th.

So, on May 1st, I am going to start tracking my food again. I am going to do my good old healthy eating! I will report in and let you know how much I have gained by the end of this crazy break. But I look at it as a running start! So maybe I will start losing and KEEP on losing. For about a year and a half to two years, I have stayed the same weight even though I was tracking, being careful, ... so maybe this is what I needed.

Wish me luck!!!

I guess i was too cocky yesterday.I did buy a cake yesterday, ate a slice of it and thought i could have another today, but it started a binge. So i threw away the cake and will be very careful again with sweets.
Gwynnie,i agree with Judi, even if it is not fair, you may incraese your chances at a lower weight. But it can also back fire and put you under more stress. So it may be safer to rely on your assets of education and experience; it is worth a lot.
Judi, how was your day after the sweets of yesterday? Half a pound is nothing at all; you probably lost weight, actually. Usually after Chinese food i gain 2 lbs...
I am getting ready for the Seder at friends;i will bring a salad of fennel and green apples, so it is not too much work....

That is a very good point. It should not be so, but I think people get a first impression that includes weight, and you may as well stack the deck in your favor.

Last night I had Chinese Food, and I think I made good choices, but my new "not tracking" makes it hard for me to know how to put together a whole good day. I actually think it is important for me to get a feel for that though. Then at a shiva, I ate a very small piece of apple cake. It was very good, but it did make me want to have five other things on that table... so we left before I could eat more. (We had already talked to everyone, so it was time to go.)

This morning, up 1/2 pound, probably from salty food, but I will be careful today.

Today's weigh-in, good. I almost could say I lost a half pound, but it is teetering. (Mine is a balance scale.) So at least I am sure I did not gain.

The haircut is still in question. The new person has possibilities, but I have been snipping a little more myself. (I hate this! I just want it to be how I want it!)

Exercised a lot yesterday. I didn't feel like laps, so I walked and jumped and twisted in the therapy pool while talking to friends there. I did a whole hour.

Gwyn and Rachel, I like finding you here all the time! Rachel, I'm happy to see that your lower calorie limit is giving you a positive feeling! It seems like something you WANT to do, and that is when something WORKS!

I have read afew blogs today and "everybody" is havingtheir hair cut.I guess spring does that to us.
I cut my own hair yesterday, having just lost my last hairdresser who was the rare one who did not cut my hair too short.
Judi, hope you like your haircut now!
Gwynnie, good luck whith the job search.

It is a new feeling for me to restrict myself to 1636 cal. and i was very tempted in the evening to have a snack.
But i told myself NO CHOICE and had a herbal tea instead.
And i feel so proud of myself today,
Thanks, girls for being there,
have a good day

Checking in. I am going to stick around school a little while and then go to the pool.

I did remember my swimsuit! But believe me, Gwynnie, that has happened to me before!

Rachel, thanks for the encouragement. I like your ideas for staying on the lower calorie amount. Good luck with that!

I am completely exhausted because I woke up in the middle of the night upset about my haircut. (It is a long story and it is not as bad as it seemed in the middle of the night!)

Anyway, I was helping a student so I had to reverse my snack and lunch (because I needed to heat up lunch but I could just grab snack. So now I am done with class and I need to eat my actual lunch. But I am so TIRED. I don't know if I have ever been too tired to eat!!! So I need to eat, stay around and digest a little, and then go to the pool...

Gwynn, bravo for your determination on getting your exercise!
On my fridge I put up a swimsuit picture of me when i was 34 and slim.I find it so motivating that i even changed my daily calories intake to 1636 which is what i would have to eat to maintain that lower weight.
And on my computer i put a yellow sticky with 1636 written on it.
So i feel better.
Way to go , Judi, on your new streak; and good luck on your thinking about leaving the college. It sounds like an interesting idea.Keep us posted

well, Judi, it is worth it to change routine from time to time. And staying at 181 for a while sounds good too if you are too busy to add anything more on your plate so to speak...(pun intended)
I, on the other hand am picking up your habit of tracking food; went 100 cal over tonight due to the wonderful cakes at my book club meeting.o well...
Gwynnie, how are you doing with the stress at work?

Hi April accountability buddies!

I'm here to report in. I have not been tracking my food for a few days now. I never do that. I think in the last three years, I took some time off tracking two or three times.

This time, it started because I got so stressed and busy that I thought my head would explode if I had to do it! This is a nice break, and I am NOT eating everything in sight. I decided to give myself a little time to try out eating without tracking, and I will keep weighing myself to avoid a train wreck. But so far, I am staying at 181. (For a long time, I was staying at 180, and then after gaining and losing a few pounds twice, I landed at 181.) So that is fine for right now.

I am trying to survive the end of school. I had some very stressful personal interactions at school, and it is settling down. So, I am keeping my life moving along, eating carefully, and I will maybe keep the break going through Passover. I'm not sure yet. I might track then.

Gotta go. A student just walked in the door.

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

never heard of the book you mentioned below. I guess that I cook and eat pretty much the same during passover as i do the rest of the yeaer -- only difference: matzoh rather than bread and passover noodles replaces spaghetti. just have to watch overdoing on both the same as with bread and regular pasta. The rest of the week I cook a lot of fish/poultry. eat lots of fruits and veggies.

o.k. among all this Passover stuff plus birthday stuff (happy birthday Judi) and this month is my birthday too, i have to find my way if i want to succeed.
i am rereading ''Psycho-Cybernetics'' by Maxwell Maltz, written in 1960, it is still very much to the point and i find it quite helpful.

So here is my plan
track my food
walk at least 3 times a week for at least 30 min at a time
go to bed at 11 p.m.
set aside 30 min. daily to do the exercises in Maltz's book
report here daily

Wishing all of you a good day

Well, as a whole family of foods, kugels are delicious! Kugel is a general term for all kinds of things baked in a pan and served in little rectangles. The most common one is noodle kugel (often a sweet one with raisins.) That is not allowed on passover though unless you use passover noodles.

For passover I make two kinds, farfel kugel (with applesauce and raisins) and potato kugel (which is saltier and made with oil and onion flavoring, and I added whole wheat matzo meal and shredded carrots.)

A few years ago, I tracked all of these passover foods into my manually entered foods, so now when I eat them on passover, I know how to record them (and I also know that it is IMPORTANT for me to use portion control because they are not exactly "diet" foods!)

yummy

We have the two big seders (one at my cousin's and one here) with lots of food. Lots of kugels (like potato, farfel, sometimes passover noodle kugel) and everything is made with lots of eggs and oil! And of course there is the kishke. And chocolate mousse...

So in the past, I have spent the whole week feeling sick from overeating! The last few years, I have done much better. It does take some planning though.

I am still working on losing my gained weight too. Yes, a real loss of some NEW pounds would be very nice.

I always think that Passover is an impossible time to lose weight. However, if I think back to my first weeks on Beck (and SPARK) THREE whole years ago, it was right as Passover was approaching. I worked with my diet coach very seriously on how to balance having a pleasant holiday with wanting to lose weight. I decided to just try to maintain, but I actually lost a few pounds. So maybe this year I will go copy out the meals I ate three years ago!!! I sure would like to lose some weight!

(I am about to make my delicious Passover chocolate mousse, from my husband's Aunt Sally's recipe, and I know I will be tasting it along the way. I just have to try not to turn it into a huge binge!) (If anyone wants the recipe, let me know... it's a crowd pleaser.)

For anyone who would like to come over and share goals for the month of April, and work on making this month count, this is the place to go.

Good luck to us all!
