This challenge to focus on a specific tool from Beck has been very helpful to me.

I intend to choose another skill and focus on that for the entire month of May. Since I have lost the habit of settling into bed each evening with my Beck workbook to plan the following day, I choose to focus on this.

Thanks to everyone who participated! It helps to be among people who understand.

This was a useful exercise. It made me pay closer attention to the excuses I come up with when it comes to eating unplanned food, fooling myself as to portion sizes or food choices, etc. I've added it to my Beck Principles Checklist so that I don't forget about it going forward.

WTG BLUESKY!!! Starting over is a good thing. Each time you have a stronger foundation to work from.

As April draws to a close, I am not where I would have liked to be on this challenge. Am I a fool, heck no. I just posted a blog that sort of touches on the lack of progress. Check it out. As I said in my blog I will continue to would on gauging my fullness, we'll see what happens by the end of July.
If I quit now I would be a fool.

Well, time to use the "Start over right this minute card".

I knew that Easter and all the candy would be a challenge. I thought I could have a few treats and then reel myself back in. Not so my friends, not so!

But I finally threw out the leftover cake (garbage in the can, garbage in my body, right?), moved the boys' baskets to the dining room and put them in plastic bags (why did that take 3 days? and why does something as simple as a baggie stop me from eating the jellybeans, it's not like it's a safe? oh well!) Went to the grocery store and stocked up on the healthy stuff and planned out the dinners for the week. Now it's vaca week for me and the kiddies, so it will be tough, but I've better get used to it because summer (aka ice cream cone season) is coming fast. I can do it!

I am back from vacation and back on track beginning today.

I haven't forgotten my promise to pre-plan all my meals! It was almost impossible to do while we were away, so instead I consciously planned for contingencies (snacks, water, NO desserts, NO buffets, lots of walking) and the end result was a small gain of three and a half pounds. I am happy with that.

Now I am back to Beck. I have pre-planned my eating for today, and I am reading my workbook each night and filling in all the charts.

It's good to be back!

No more distractions, who was I kidding! LOL
Yikes this is so difficult for me but I'll keep at it.
Leaving food on my plate and gauging my fullness, eating half then asking the fullness question.
Practice, practice, practice. I will get it.

Hi. I haven't checked in for awhile because I've been so busy. It seems like everything happens all at once. I was just complaining that my life was too routine and boring. Now, I wish it would go back to boring. I've been doing well with not fooling myself. I've been staying away from little nibbles and "tasting" food on the side. Weekends are the toughest time though. If I'm at work and don't have easy access to food, I do fine.

Finally I did my taxes so no more angst or distraction. No more excuses... I must be more mindful about my fullness. Thankfully I pay attention to portion size at meals, but I do tend to clean my plate. So I think with paying attention to fullness, I should also leave something on my plate.
Let's see how this week will go.

The past couple of days have gone very well. I've been really busy at work and at home, so I haven't had a lot of time--or opportunity--to think about eating. I've lost another pound... this must be working!

Sounds like everyone is sticking with their goals - HOORAY!

I'm still plugging away. I'm actually started to "think" the right way instead of thinking wrong first and then saying ... "Next time...."

Very exciting!

I was successful today. We had dinner with friends tonight. They bought a bottle of wine. Normally, I would've had a glass, but this time I just couldn't fool myself into thinking that liquids don't add calories. I had a sparkling water instead.

Success came early today. When the pastry showed up at the office this morning (from a truly fabulous local bakery) I actually heard the sabotaging thought in my head, "Oh, look - a goodie! Gimmee!" and I immediately responded with the answer I made up yesterday, "Is it on your food list for today? Well, too bad then. You're not eating any. No Choice." And I didn't eat any. None. It actually worked. I am astonished, I really am.

I didn't know I was that powerful when it came to deciding not to eat. It's like stepping through the looking glass into a parallel world where I can make anything happen.

I am so proud of me.

Heavens I have to learn to be patient with myself.
This challenge is challenging to say the least. who would think that paying attention to fullness would be that difficult, but for me it is. I need to be more mindful, slow down. This is not a race. It is a skill I want to acquire.

Perhaps I should put a card next to my plate that says 1/2.
It would serve as a visual reminder, to get me going.

I stink at this mindful stuff! Maybe its not objective enough for me, or maybe its too big a leap from where I am now and I need a baby step.

I do eat sitting down, that's not a problem at all. We eat at the table for every meal when we're both here. Its the meals that I eat alone that I'm stuck on.

So, I'm making a little change. I do really well with baby steps. My goal is to eat every meal with a placemat. Going through the bother of doing that makes it more likely I'll be mindful. And its an easy thing to do, and easily measurable.

Tonight, dinner took awhile to finish cooking. I caught myself in the fridge, foraging for olives. It's amazing just how much of a reflex nibbling is... it's almost automatic and unconscious. Yeah, they're olives and not many calories but they weren't on my plan.

Although I am sticking with my Pre-Planning Goal on this challenge and I am completely on plan with my eating, today I am struggling mentally.

I am noticing a LOT of sabotaging thoughts floating around in my head. Fortunately, I recognize what they are now and I'm ready to fight them.

Here's my plan for the day -- stay on plan, and attack the sabotage head-on. I will make a list of the thoughts that could sink me and I will add responses to knock 'em dead.

I am NOT giving up!

Tuesday was not bad. Resisted taking candy that someone left in the Break Room at work. Usually, I'd take one and not add it to my food tracker. Today I caught myself picking crumbs off the baking sheet... put them into the garbage instead.

I know that I'm a little late in starting this, but better tlate than never, right?

I plan to:

1. Do my workbook, consistently, instead of just reading through the book and making mental notes
2. Practice "ending overeating" - my portion size has gotten considerably smaller from my old habits, but I still like to clean out my plate even though I know I'm full
3. Make a habit of reading my LISTS and CARDS I'm terrible with this - will make copies and stick them everywhere instead of just in my phone and computer

I think everyone's doing a great job so far! Way to go!

After having a bit of trouble and fretting over it, Reading about the all or nothing thinking gave me an idea. My skill to practice is to tune into fullness, 80%.

Dinners are going horrific. We have family meals and with the four of us at the table, it's just too much. I finish eating say "Oh crap" because I did not practice.

So to solve that, I have decided to work on honing my skill at breakfast and lunch when there is less going on and I can focus better. I will also work fullness with scheduled snacks.
So for now practicing dinner is on the back burner and will be revisited on April 16th, when I have strengthened my skill.

Expect Success

Good Morning Everyone!

Well, I'm reading my Beck everyday - which was my goal. Following it? Not quite as consistent... LOL! But breaking bad habits isn't easy!

The weekend really threw me off - took me until yesterday to completely regroup but then yesterday was a gold star day!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Monday was a day without fooling myself. I was busy at work and went to ceramics class after, so I wasn't around food long enough to nibble and nosh. Sunday was more challenging. I cooked dinner (those of you who've been around for awhile know that my husband usually does the cooking). Well, I had to catch myself every time I was tempted to take a "taste."

Monday was a complete success for me on this challenge. I preplanned all my food the night before and ate ONLY according to the plan. My inner free spirit was not happy about this, but she can just get over it. I am losing weight, and that's the way it is.

I wasn't all that mindful during the celebration. But having a plan did save me a bit. I divided my plate in half, before I even started eating. but I did not check in about my fullness. Then the same thing happened with popcorn later. (consumed until gone) I really need to work on this.

Perhaps I need a tattoo on the back of my hand as a reminder.

Did pretty well yesterday, ate breakfast at the computer, but lunch and dinner were at the table. I think its easier on weekends with DBF around, but I'll try to eat breakfast and lunch at the table by myself today.

This challenge is showing me weak spots! Ouch!

I'm three-out-of-four-days complying. Today I forgot; I got up from the table and walked over to the computer with my apples/bran cereal/pecans bowl in my hand, to look up something. SO that shows me I wasn't even being that mindful! Argh!

The first weekend of our Don't Be an April Fool Challenge was tough for me, which just means that I have chosen a perfect skill to practice -- Pre-Planning Meals.

As promised, I tracked all my food for the following day right here on SparkPeople each evening and stuck to the plan the next day. I've gone back to measuring every portion to keep myself honest (size-creep is a big problem for me). My coach warned me on Saturday night to be especially careful on Sunday, since my weight hasn't dropped for the last two days. And I made Sunday my best and most mindful day of the weekend.

I don't know what my weigh-in will show tomorrow morning, but I am feeling incredibly successful right now. I truly CAN do this.

Your life is not a dress rehearsal, it is the real thing. Do what makes you happy. Do it now.

April 3 - Have to report that I am doing great with the NO DISTRACTIONS dinner! TC told me tonight that he enjoys my company! (I've obviously always been there physically but maybe not so mentally.)

Anyway, I don't think this is going to be a problem now that we've moved dinner to a later time and he's not only supportive, he's the one turning off the TV!

Day 14 on the no alcohol.

I'm going to wait a few days and pick another problem area.

Later! Keep Becking!!

Yesterday was successful. I went grocery shopping. I stayed away from two free sample tables by taking the long way around... got in some extra steps on the pedometer this way.

Yesterday was very good. I ate lunch and dinner at the table with DBF and both meals were big salads. Breakfast was at the computer, so that one wasn't so mindful. However, breakfast is sort of a fixed calorie prescribed meal - I have oatmeal with wheat germ and dried fruit - a fixed amount that is exactly as much as I need to keep me on the right track to lunch. Yes, it could be more mindful, but its not an overeating trap for me. I'll work more on the lunch, dinner and snacks and once I'm good there, I'll start working on breakfast.

Or maybe that's a sabotaging thought? Feel free to call BS on me if you see it emoticon

Today I set up goals to check off listed in Other Goals on the Sparkpoints so I can track my progress.
Also I set up an appointment email reminder, so I get a daily reminder of my "Don't Be an April Fool!"
goals,

Assessing my fullness is still challenging and I do need more practice. Having the above reminders are like reading my Advantages list. A daily reminder will help me focus.

My skill to practice for April is from Days 17 and 18 since they are related.
End Overeating and Change Your Definition of Full

Eating slowly and mindfully,
Hara Hachi Bu (eating to 80% full) and
the Helpful Response on my card:
“Eat half and then ask yourself ‘Am I Hungry?’ You will usually find that you are satisfied. If not, eat the half of what is left and tune in again.”

Slowing down and savoring each bite is helping me tune in.

Expect Success

Great, everyone! Beck skills are the key.

HONEY, we are ALL still working on the "sabotaging thoughts"...when we master that we'll have the rest licked.

I am going to work on the skill "Decide about Alcohol" which in my case is NONE. I'm almost two weeks in on that one.

The other one I will start with in April is the "one meal a day with no distractions." It's interesting to me how many of us have chosen that -- we apparently eat mindlessly much more often than we know we should.

Last night I planned dinner for AFTER the local and national news, changed my spot at the table (facing the view and not the TV). Put the food on my plate and then grabbed the mail to go through...OOOPS!!! I caught myself and put the mail back on the counter.

Hubby and I had a lovely meal. :-)

I'm going to work on the Day 19 task: Stop Fooling Yourself. I've started to slack off on eating to my plan... a little bite here, a cookie sample there. I haven't gained weight, but I'm not losing either. I suspect it's the extra calories that have been creeping in.

Count me in!

My daily goal for April is to pre-plan my meals the day before. This has been a keystone to my Beck experience so far, and I need the practice.

Good luck to all!

I'm in! I commit to eating one meal a day with no distractions.

I'm committing to the suggestion from Nancy15toGoal. I will eat "one meal a day with no distractions - no TV, radio, reading material, or computer -- but conversation is okay."

I am new (and excited) to Beck and to joining a team as well. So I have not gone much further than sabotaging thoughts and reasons to lose weight. But I will sign up for something I have already mentally committed to - relishing and tasting every bite (no more mindless eating). I know this is one of my big "issues" and even while I am wolfing it down I know I am not enjoying it but I cannot stop.
emoticon That was yesterday!

A new challenge for April is to select a Dr. Beck skill that we have found challenging and practice it for the 30 days of April. This is doable for anyone and easy to fit in with no excuses; it will help us build a stronger foundation to work from. (Thanks to Nancy- for this proposal!)

A good example of a specific goal for this challenge would be one meal a day with no distractions - no TV, radio, reading material, or computer -- but conversation is okay. (Thanks to Nancy15togoal for this suggestion.)

For accountability, report in on this forum to state your intention of the skill you've picked to practice and focus on. Then we'll keep each other posted on progress!

It takes 3 weeks to build a habit, so consistency here can establish patterns that will take us all the way to our goals!

Many thanks also to SLENDERELLA61, WATERMELLEN, ID_VANDAL, FLUTTER-BY)L(, BLUESKY104, ANUSCHKA9, JUNEMONKEY, and BLUESKY_321 for brainstorming with me about an April challenge.
