I am so glad this thread was helpful for so many of us! I also did not come anywhere near my goal for weight loss but did keep myself coming back to my goals for behavior so ended weightwise about where I began the two months. I'm heading over to the Make January Count thread now!

Hi Rachel,
I'm glad that this thread helped you to make a difference in how you handled these last several weeks. It is very helpful to have a little bit of accountability!

Right now, I am hanging on, not being super "great" but doing pretty well for all that is going on!

o.k. folks, this is the final weigh in for this year.
Thanks to you and this thread (special thanks to Heidi), i LOST 1 lb despite the temptations,
of course it was not the 5 lb i was hoping to do but considering...i am pretty happy.
How about a "making January count" thread,if you agree, can someone set it up, i do not know how to do it,

M&Ms were my favorite food when I went to the movies!! Now I don't eat at the movies - if i do it's unbuttered popcorn and I don't eat the whole thing--I throw it after 1/2 eaten -- i am back tracking ad exercising and I seem to have lost 1.2 pounds.

So, here is my new diet plan. Binge out on a whole bunch of m&m's and feel so sick that I am up all night tossing and turning. The extra exercise must have been good for me because I was down two pounds this morning. (It was Wednesday night that I didn't sleep.)

So, it works, ... but I really would not recommend it! (And what is with me and the m&m's?! I don't eat that stuff! Now we can see why!!!)

I think its more seasonal than holiday for me-- the darkness and cold-- can't go out walking when the sidewalks are icy

but I am tracking again, and spacing out my meals etc etc... we leave tomorrow and today we did our gift exchange and are now getting tasks done around the house.

I usually don't eat sweets, but I think I might have to try those! Tonight, I must say I ate way too much. I was at Mah Jongg, and the hostess put out all kinds of food. I don't know what was going on with me! But I did not watch what I ate. Now I have to go and track it all in!!!!

This is a tough time of year to try to lose weight, but I think that we have been putting forth an awareness that is making a difference! There are so many temptations, parties, gifts (just got a box of frango mints from a student!!!) and if we can keep ourselves under any kind of control, that is to be commended!!!

I have not been consistent about much. I do log my food, but I don't always try to keep it to a low amount. I exercise, but not as much as I would need to do to lose weight. I weighed myself just now, and I am up a little, so maybe I will move my ticker...

But I am still not giving up. I am not going to "make the rest of the year a DISASTER!" I am keeping a lid on things and knowing I will start again more seriously as soon as I am ready.

Hi Everyone,
I have been slipping a little bit, mainly in skipping my exercises. Still pretty good for food. I need to just survive some of the busy times, and so I am not pushing too hard on all of my Beck skills, but I do believe that having that in my mind, and having this great team, are keeping me from derailing. Sometimes the effort needs to ebb and flow, and I know that soon I will be ready for another big PUSH!

I was just reading back some of the posts, and I saw what Heidi said about wearing jeans. I have one pair of jeans that I really like! And they do make me feel thinner and they make me WANT to BE even thinner. (Oh, no, they are in the washer. I washed my clothes and never switched to the dryer! I'm glad the subject of jeans came up!)

Rachel-- I'm SO glad you posted this-- I think we are all struggling and I don't see anyone on this particular challenge batting 1000. That really isn't the point, which you know because, as you said, its having this to come to that keeps us at 500 or whatever we're at rather than 0. I find I move through so many different levels of motivation or lack thereof. Sometimes I'm just forcing myself through my "paces": eat 400 calories, move for 30 minutes, eat 500 caloires, etc etc. Sometimes I'm really excited about what I'm doing. Sometimes just wearing jeans helps. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much I've already lost, I still feel fat and awful and in serious need of a bag of potato chips.

SeriousSlim: If you go through the Beck Diet Solution plan once and faithfully use your ARCs, you will find eating management gets easier. It did for me.

Just putting the "plug in the jug" (an AA term one of my friends uses) may work for a time, but eventually you'll be faced with temptations. This is where the Beck plan becomes invaluable... you need to have an arsenal of cognitive therapy based techniques to help you overcome. Changing the way you think will make changing your habits much easier.

I could post this in the general thread but somehow find it easier to share it here:
it is difficult for me to keep connected with my resolutions because that inner sense of wanting to be slim and proud of my energy is very elusive and when it goes away, no advantage card does it for me.

However having to report here keeps me from derailing too much.

So i hope i am not disappointing you too much and that we can continue to share our efforts and ultimately our victories.

I am trying to recapture the feeling i had which led me to stop my smoking habit once and for all( it had to do with the real sense and feeling of the harm i was doing to my body). After that i did not even crave a cigarette ever again!

I am really working on developping that sense about being fit and healthy at a healthy weight.
In the meantime i will strive to continue posting.

I still want to do "OK" for the rest of the year. But I have decided to stop doing the big Beck PUSH that I was doing. I am really busy and I do not want to feel guilty all the time for not doing "EVERYTHING".

However, I still ate a vegetable at dinner tonight. I still got to the pool two times this past week (but not three). My weight is down a teensy weensy bit. And I am trying to take good care of myself.

So that is my story. Keep up the end of year trying. We can do it!

Heidi, i agree with you;it is difficult for me even to make small goals other than walking, pilates and trying to log.But it is definitely way better than if i had not joined the challenge because as a result i do not let myself go completely.

SLIM-- when I'm going through a really rough time I try to focus on minimizing the damage-- maybe cut down the goals to focus on a few basics that will keep you moving and not going totally off track. I had to restart my goals last week after two weeks of mostly not logging (which almost always means eating over my range) so, weight wise, I'm almost back down to where I was at the beginning of this challenge. Not ideal, but (as I keep telling myself) SOO much better than if I had just let myself stay off track.

i tried to tell husband we needed a new home scale -- he poo pooed me. I think we do. we were using it in the bathroom and the only room we had was right next to a heating vent -- and so even though i have new batteries in it, the scale always said i was way much lighter (by 9 pounds) than the scale at the gym and hte WW scale. we moved the scale and it went up. interested in seeing what the gym says

i have been exercising regularly and this week i have been able to get up to 30 minutes (Thursday was 40 minutes) of exercise a day (that is where it was before surgery). I am tracking -- however calories are slightly higher than what I want

Thank you for starting this challenge, i really needed it!


- my plan is to record my calories daily, between 1700 and 1900 cal daily.Splurge once a week only to a maximum of 2400 cal.


-on the days i don't walk to work, do the 2 miles Leslie Sansone walk away the pounds so that i walk a total of 6 out of 7 days.


-continue with my Pilates 6 out of 7 days.



I hope lose at least 6 pounds till the end of the year!

tuesday 23: 1785 c.; walk to work; Pilates
wednesday 24: 1175 c. (felt a bit sick, no appetite) walk to work

So, how is everyone doing with making the rest of the year count?

I would say that I was actually doing very well since I started my Beck approach over again about a month ago. Today is not a great day. (Not that I am eating too much, I just feel yukky,)

I'm really hanging in there on my new Beck push. I have not been quite as good at making myself a priority, so my time for writing in my journal is not every day, but just every few days. But my eating has been very good and I have been swimming three times a week.

It is slow going, but I have stayed under 180 for a while now, so I am ready to start losing some NEW pounds! Let's hope! Or should I said, I am going to make this happen!

Nov. 3rd - excellent.
Nov. 4th - went out to dinner for mom's night out w/ some friends. Indulged a bit more than I planned, but much better than I would have done in the past.
Nov. 5th - to make up for last night, suggested to hubby that we forego our usual friday night trip to our fave mexican restaurant for pizza night at home; got a kashi pizza for me, so made a good choice for today. Yay me! And extra exercise today, so should offset my bad day yesterday.

I didn't have time to post yesterday, but I started yesterday in spirit. My overall goal is to enjoy the holiday season and our special family traditions as much as possible, while maintaining my forward progress. I want to enjoy special pre-planned indulgences but keep proper portion sizes and maximize my exercise. No excuse not to keep up the exercise during the holidays!

Goals:
1. Stay within calorie range on a daily basis, except for: Thanksgiving dinner, my birthday dinner (Nov 10), Christmas dinner party Dec 12, Hauer's party, Christmas eve dinner, christmas morning breakfast, Christmas day dinner, new years day dinner. But, these special meals must be portion controlled. All other food must be logged.
2. Any special treats eaten at any other time must be logged (I.e. Cookies, starbucks, wine, etc) and must fit in daily calorie range.
3. Continue to meet current exercise goals (aerobic or yoga 30+ min daily, weights 2-3 times per week)
4. Add extra 15-30 min of exercise at least 2-3 times per week
5. Continue to read ARC and other cards daily
6. Revisit any Beck principles as needed during this time
7. Continue to report to coach regularly, and prior to above mentioned special occasions for support with game plan
8. Report on this message board both missed goals, AND credit for successes, at least weekly (daily if possible)
9. No weight gain on Thanksgiving week
10. No more than 1 pound weight gain Christmas week

I've recently restarted the Beck days, and I am being reminded of such interesting and important things! Also, I found one thing that I seem to have skipped over the first time. It was about coming up with a list of distraction techniques and trying them out to see which one work best for me. I remember doing a list and writing it on one of my cards, but I never, ever actually tried them out and assessed them. I am going to do that one this time around.

I'm "IN in spirit".

I'm not great with writing out the goals because it makes me more prone to sabotage myself. I'm not a big "challenge" gal.

But I'm glad we have this new challenge going on, and I hope everyone does make the end of the year count. Good idea! So often, we think of Nov/Dec as a lost cause.

But this year, I have just recently gotten myself back to my better Beck ways. I am:

- tracking food (usually BEFORE the day so I can see the totals and adjust things before I eat them!)
- exercising three times a week
- writing in my Beck journal almost every night

i am in

goal 1) to track honestly all food and to stay between 1250 and 1400 calories per day
goal 2) start with 15 minutes of exercise per day (treadmill) and work up to 30, expanding to bike, weights, dancing and swimming with doctor's okay.

Sounds good. My goal is to keep up my exercise, 45-60 minutes a day or 10,000 steps. Also, to keep up with my diet goals.

GOAL: Plan and log food daily, stay within calorie range (1650-1850 with one planned overage every week or two)

RANGE: Ten weeks, including the past week. I just hit 190 and my hope is to be in the low 180s by the end of December

I know I need the extra accountability right now so I'm opening up a challenge thread for anyone on the Beck team who cares to join us.
