I am currently on Day 6 of The Beck Diet Solution!! So far I have taken notes... I have a notebook FOR this purpose. I also chose the two diets: Weight Watchers and the back-up diet I chose would be the Spark Diet. I am having a successful time with this book and the WW diet method. YAY!!!!!! emoticon

Today I am scheduled to do my Kettle Bell workout. Today and tomorrow I am scheduled for some kind of cardio. Normally I would do a DVD for getting my cardio, but I hurt my foot and it is swollen and painful, so NOT TODAY!!

I rewrote my response cards on colorful index cards. I did have them on little business cards with flowers but I kept misplacing them. You can see these from all over. They are neon cards and when I see them..I immedeatly remember. I also wrote I have no choice on a bright pink one. Now they are in my face all day.
I am really eating slow now and know his helps.
I do a thing that I call lock and load.
I take a bite, put my utensil down, chew for at least 25 times(up to 40), then take a couple of sips of water, count to 25 then start over. It has made me feel really full and I usually take 40 min. now where I used to be finished in 10.

It really helps me to stay focused on the goal.

Wow, congratulations on losing 10 of the 15. That is fantastic. I cannot wait to say the same thing one day soon! Whatever works! I'm using all the tools I can find - Beck, IOWL, Roth, etc.

I regained about 15 pounds before I finally put a stop to it. I have lost back ten, and I'm still working at it.

I have not taken up the whole Beck experience again (at least not at this moment) and I am doing some different things. But I find that keeping in touch on the Beck message boards helps me to stay connected to the principals that helped me so much before.

I still track my food every day. And I just naturally continue some of the things like giving myself credit, thinking differently, ... so I still thank Dr. Beck for figuring this all out!

And I might actually pick up more of the old habits too if I do not find that my results are what I want them to be.

Hi there! Thank you for that post! I've gained 22 pounds since reaching goal in October! I'm rereading the book too!

I can really appreciate your experience!

Here are my steps right now:

Read my advantage list many times/day.
Eat all meals seated, slowly and mindfully.
Give myself credit every morning and night.

Hi, I'm not new to the team, but I haven't been active. I've gained 20#'s since hitting goal in April 2011. I'm re-reading The Beck Diet Solution.

Today my list is:

Read advantage cards
Tracking food
Walking 10 minutes & 15 minutes strength training
Eating slowly and mindfully

Plus, continuing to read the book and adding to my list.

Hi Julie,
In the workbook (and book too I think) they have you write some things at the end of each day, like going through a checklist. You can put a lot of your own ideas down, and they have things like: read your response cards, plan the next day, ... I don't have it in front of me, but they are the activities that have been presented up to that point in the program. And that is why, when our old leader started the Daily Check-in, she wrote "a new part of the todo list", meaning that whatever list we are currently tracking, we should add on coming over here to check in with the team.

I hope that helps. I'll try to find my workbook and see what other types of things are on that list.

Hi All,

I saw a team goal is to read the Beck checklist daily. Is that checklist from her book or a document the team created?

Thanks,

Julie

Hi TreeCat. I would imagine that tracking in two places would be too much! One is hard enough!

Hi! I'm new to the group and I liked this feed so I'd like to add my comments. When I first started the Beck Diet Solution I wasn't really tracking anything I ate. It didn't appeal to me becuase it took up so much time. (I did it previously when I was on WW.) After starting the Beck Solution I also joined SparkCoach and ended up tracking my food in two places!!! It becomes a little time-consuming to be doing this in two places. I can't wait to finish up my six weeks on the Beck Solution so I only have to track in one area! I know tracking is a good habit and I hope I have the patience to continue doing this.

Dream it. Do it. Live it.

Good to see you June! I am a slacker lately when it comes to tracking. I am experimenting with not tracking and it is going OK for maintaining. But if I want to lose, I think I have to get back to it.

Hi Everyone! I was visiting my elderly friend in NJ the last several days so now I am back to basics. I have been reading the Beck Book when I was away and I am on Day 1. I track off and on but I want to be more consistent with it. When I read what I have eaten and see my calorie totals it helps me stay on track. It also helps if I plan ahead and put the meal in before I eat it particularly if I am eating out which I do a lot. I have a cell phone but unable to put apps on it. I am renewing in November and I am going to get a phone that I can download apps, Cindi, I like that idea. Hope everyone has a good day. Remember emoticon June

I think your experience has been mine. I've tracked my food for over three years and just couldn't do it. I'd get so caught up in the details of everything. And I just didn't have the time to devote to like I did at the beginning. I found an app on my cell phone that seems to be perfect for me. Its called Calorific. It has foods grouped in good, okay and bad (green, yellow, red) categories. And it has calorie values assigned and portions. I compared it with tracking my food here and the calories came up pretty similar. One of the things with Calorific is that you have to forget precision. Also, you can't keep track of nutrients. Its making me more aware of the bad foods I eat, and don't think about. It does have eggs under bad, but I track them under okay. The goal is to keep a balance of about 50% green foods, 35% okay and 15% bad. For your foods you have to break them down into the components. Like for lunch we had black bean and zuchinni quesidillas. Which came out to be green except for the shredded cheese which was bad since its full fat. Being on my cell phone makes it easier for me to track without having to be online.

Focusing on my weight I think is helping me not to think too much about other things in my life.

Hi Cindi,
I'm glad to see you. I am personally having some of the same trouble with eating. I only gained about five pounds (over about six months), but I have completely stopped tracking right now. The idea of doing it is feeling oppressive to me. In the past, all of my success has been during tracking, and every time I stop, I gain weight. So I keep going back to it.

But right now, I am thinking about some other way. I'm glad you found something easier so you can track again. I am kicking around the idea of just tracking the "overage". If I eat more than a typical meal or snack, I would write what it was and journal about it. I am thinking that my aversion to the tracking and writing might just make me avoid eating it! (I'm still in the planning phase.)

The other interesting thing though is that in the last three plus years, I have always tracked my food except for a few weeks here and there, and in the past it always made me gain. But this time, I had already gained my five pounds and I got myself back under control (with tracking) and just the last couple of weeks I have been NOT tracking and also not overeating.

I wish us both luck with this issue! emoticon

No, I haven't been around. Its a long story that I'll write in a blog sometime. I need to at least for me process some of it. Bu, I've gained almost all my weight back with all the stress. Getting back on track is hard when you slip and I'm realizing it. Learning some new things in the process. Wanting to get back to Beck, but learning that I have to get over my obsessiveness and make it work for me. Not me work for Beck. She may be the expert in the book, but I am the expert about me.

It feels good to be back.

I've struggled with tracking lately. But, I've been overeating and gaining weight. I've found a tracker for my phone that isn't as detailed as my Sparkpeople tracker and its working better for me. I guess, simpler is better. I'm just keeping track of portions and calories. i think I just got so caught up in details that it got overwhelming. And then I'd just give up.

Hi June. I hope you like the book!

I have completely stopped tracking my food lately. But this time, I have not started eating a lot. I am pretty much doing well. I am just really not in the mood to track!

So, I should look back and see what I wrote for goals... LOL ... I should KNOW ...

(Back in a minute after I go look...)

I'm still tracking food, but not as much ahead of time as I need to be doing. I am not in a good spot to do it regularly. (Schedule in flux, going out more, ... excuses, excuses...)

I feel really "worn out" mentally, and doing the Beck stuff is very mental. I have to give myself something that allows me to do this again. I'm not sure exactly what, but I know I am not at that spot right now.

I do still have my cards, so I will read them RIGHT NOW!

I am going to keep this thread sticky. We haven't used it in a while.

For me, I am trying to get some Beck things going again:
reading my cards
tracking food (in advance whenever possible)
and more...

Well, this is frustrating. We are supposed to have three stickies per forum, and it will not let me make three topics sticky. I don't know what is wrong, but I don't have time to think about it any more right now...

Oh Judi, i really understand that you have so many irritating schol things to deal with, plus the loss of your friend to find energy to "do" the weight loss thing. BUT you are maintaining your good habits and that is tremendous! Give yourself credit for this!
i rediscovered the giving oneself credit and i find it even more important the second time around.
Looking forward to your posts

Rachel, I am slipping off of some of my activities because I am so swamped at school. I am NEVER teaching this class again (even though it would be easier a second time) because I really hate it! And I am not going to teach two three credit hour classes instead of one five because then there are twice as many papers to grade! All in all, I have really gotten myself into a mess this semester, and let's just say, I have learned a lot.

Also, I am not going to be able to go to the pool on Friday because I have to go to a funeral.

I am not giving up, but I am giving myself a little break from the feeling that I need to do everything so well. I am back in maintenance mode for a while.

But I will still check in. I think that having some accountability will keep me from sliding way, way off.

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

I am getting back on track too.
Even though i am really very easily tired, and don't always know whether it is better to give myself a rest or to push myself,i tried to push myself inthe morning yesterday with my Leslie Sansone and ate within my calories. Was so tired at night that i could not even go out again to undulge in my craving for chocolates...
so i went to sleep; always a good thing.
Feel way better today!
Sleep is really key for me together with planning my food for the week, which i have done for the past month.

It is very difficult for me to keep doing all the things I want to do in my Beck world because I am busier than I like to be. It just won't let up! I have been behind since my new classes started. Tonight, one of my tutoring students cancelled and I am just so happy to get that hour back.

This past weekend, I did all of my cooking to help me stay on track. I also planned and tracked my meals ahead today. But I missed the pool because I had an extra meeting and a visit to my cardiologist.

All my blood work was good, but my blood pressure was a little high.

So that is my report. I am not "perfect" on my Beck work, but I have not given up!

Did mostly okay this past week, but I was tired and didn't get all my steps and my walking DVD some days. Going to be in a challenge with my pedometer this week and I have to get 10,000 steps a day this week. This will be hard and will push me.

Judi, congrats for the new low :- )
this is about the only time when we look forward to a low...
today was still sluggish, i might have caught a bug. the up side of it is that i don't have much of an appetite.
It is time for me to go to bed, sleep really does make a difference in my mental and physical state.
Have a good day all

I hope today is better for you.

I missed my exercising on Wednesday, so my next planned day is today. I am planning to go on my way home from school. I just need to make myself walk out of there instead of staying late and grading papers. The papers will still be with me AFTER the pool!

Also, I went to bed last night without tracking in the next day of food, but I just did it right now, so I am still tracking ahead! For me, that is one of the biggest keys. I do much better when I do that.

My weight today is back just under 180.

Marsha, I totally agree with your idea. I have some "foods" in my tracker favorites called "Restaurant or Travel Protein" "Restaurant or Travel Starch" "Restaurant or Travel Veggie" and "Restaurant or Travel Hidden Fat". I have used those in the way you describe. Last night, I was just feeling shaky about the fact that I have only just started trying to track in advance. It was always a key to success for me and I don't know why I resist it so much. But being so early on that track, I didn't want to start "fudging" it. I ended up making some decisions and just entering them!!! It is going well!

So, hello also to Rachel. Let's see what I have to say about keeping up on my Beck activities ...
I tracked ahead for two days in a row. I weighed myself today. I do think I do better when I weigh myself every day (the way the original Beck books said). I am going to the pool tomorrow and I got all the info and cleared my calendar for a zumba class starting next week. So I think I am doing a lot of the things I need to be doing!

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

Judi, A couple times when I did not know exactly what food would be served, on my food plan I just wrote in maximums. ("Eat out - 480 calories") Then I aimed for that amount. Worked for me. I'm still bouncing just above my goal weight and trying not to be impatient. -Marsha

How did the weigh in go? Today I was up a pound. (I am not changing my ticker! I don't feel like it!!!!)

But I am happy to say, I did write in my Beck journal last night and I logged my food in advance. I stuck to it almost exactly and made the small changes today to update it.

I have a strange day tomorrow, and it makes it hard for me to track ahead. I do better on a school day. But I should not let that stop me. Maybe I will go and put in some of the day, at least.

I'm having a blood test (routine) in the morning, so I can't eat anything tonight. It is interesting that I am able to do that, because I know I just can't eat! But normally, I am looking for food every night...

I missed my swimming today because I stayed late at school to finish making up a test. I am very, very glad to finally have that done. But I am sorry about missing the exercises. However, I think that in the long run, getting myself caught up is going to be very beneficial, and I think I made the right decision.

I'm with you about the idea of going to be early. I think I need to add that to my list too. It is 11:14, and I am typing away... but I should just go to bed!!!

Talk to you soon.

Judi, you SO got it! And i am really happy that my post helped you some.
I like the idea of celebration rather than mortification....

for me this would be
Preplanning and preparing the food for the week,
Logging in my calories
As well as getting some exercise.
Going to bed before 11:30

The no sweets actually has been helpful because it decreases my cravings, but at this time i feel also rebellious and would rather just have 'positive commandments'

Take care, i will post here as well.
Rachel

the day is not over but i am happy to report that i logged in my calories and have a lot of healthy food in the fridge.
Tomorrow is my weigh in day and i hope to see some results

Hi Rachel,
Today, I am trying to catch up on a lot of work. I have a huge list. But right here and now, as I am typing this note to you, I am going to write on my list to enter something into my Back to Beck journal. I said I would do it, and then this morning, I did not write it on my list. So, I'm listing it now and doing it later tonight. Also, I will plan my food for tomorrow before I go to bet tonight! (Seeing you write back here on this thread helped me today! Thanks!)

I do think it will help me to meet you here and use this to focus ourselves on Beck!

My friend Eddy on the Jewish group is also helping work on this "challenge" and she said something that sounds a lot like your remark (and also sounds right for me) which is, sometimes these challenges do backfire. She had the idea of starting a "Celebration" thread. We can still set up our goals for what we believe we need to be doing, but instead of coming over there and moaning about things we did not do from that list, we would just check in regularly and celebrate all the things we did do to stay on track. I will think more about this, and maybe I can draft an idea that will work for you and me and Gwyn and Eddy! And then other people can join in!

For me and Eddy, a big thing is not to eat sweets. For me and Gwyn, a big thing is sticking to our own food plan and tracking the food.

But I do think it is best if each person decides on their own things to be accountable for. (But, not accountable in a way of beating ourselves up. More like, "I know I will do well if I can do A, B, C, D, and E... and today I did A, D, and E. YAY for me!"

Tell me, for yourself, what are some of the things that you want to focus on doing to help you lose weight?

Hi Judi, you sound ready for a new streak (sp?).I am so glad that your meeting with your coach did it for you !

I am reading Beck again for inspiration but not in a serious enough way to go on the "back to Beck" forum.

If you feel like it i will "meet" you here. It is just what i need to keep me focused.

As far as a challenge goes, thank you for asking, maybe when Gwynnie is back from Israel, that could be a possibility; i am always trying to find a way that focusses my efforts without pushing me too much; (which backfires for me)
Got to go to bed; i fell asleep on the couch with the tv on and just woke up...that's not a good quality of sleep.
take care

Hi Rachel, that is a good list. I think it will help!

Gwynnie is thinking about having a challenge on the Jewish group - something about "staying on track". I am not sure what it will be, but it sounds like something you might like.

Let me know if you want to help plan that challenge. Gwynnie will be gone (in Israel) for a little while starting in a couple of days, so we probably won't do it until she gets back.

I have not been doing my "Back to Beck" journal (which I started up in the fall and which helped me a lot.) But I have stopped because of extreme overload. Now that I have some ideas (from my coach) to get a grip, I think I will start writing in there again.

It is a place where I do my sizing up of whether I am following the things about Beck that have worked for me. I can also report in here about that if you (and/or others) are going to be around here. That would be nice!

I just found this thread and i like it as well
I am doing fine but need to be reminded
so here it goes:

let the team help by posting at least a few times a week
stay within my cal. range
read my cards...so easy but why don't i do it ?
plan my exercice. Now that it is winter and that i rarely can walk to work i have to make extra time for walking..that is going to take some planning.
drink water.

i have to make those points a priority.

Hi Team,
I have just recently started back on my Beck activities and I am already starting to lose again. I have been slacking for over a year! I did just enough so that I would not gain weight, but I didn't do enough to lose!

Let's keep working on this!

Also, see the other new challenge!

If I may Judi, I copied your first post so that it stands as a reminder to us all! You covered everything perfectly Thanks!!
This is just a proposal.

How about if we post a list, and make a commitment to follow it, and report back here on how we are doing:

1. LET THE TEAM HELP!
Visit the Daily Check-In, use the Coaching Corner, Back to Beck ... whatever is your own way to get the team's help
2. FOOD!
Track all food! One goal is for the tracking of it, another is to stay in range. Both are important goals.

5. DRINK WATER!

Been pretty busy, but this is a busy time for us. It will slow down about July and time to think about school starting.

I've been working on diet lately. I have realized that I'm doing pretty well. I got several compliments at our denominational meetings I was at yesterday. People were telling me how good I look.

One of my challenges has been adjusting to avoid some future health issues.

My goals for June are pretty much history. I returned yesterday from Ohio where I attended my uncle's funeral and saw my very best friend who has been diagnosed with very early onset dementia. It was wonderful to see her and her memory is good. I didn't think I was sad but I am. I am tried from a rapid, busy, and exhausting trip and I am just sad. I did not gain weight while I was gone although I didn't actually think much about what I was eating and did no exercise at all. I ate some things that I would not eat normally but the pace of the trip included missed meals and even worse--inadequate hydration.

I am doing very little today and recovering from the trip. I did walk for 25 minutes this morning but at an easy pace.

I am still committed completely to getting to goal and keeping the weight off, eating healthy and exercising but just for now none of it seems as important as it was a week ago.

I have decided to try something new diet wise. I have very heavy legs with a significant amount of fat around my knees. As I have been losing, it is not reducing much at all. This new diet program MAY help to remove some of this problem fat in this area. It is something that I want to try. I am going to measure my legs before and during the diet. If I see loss in that problem area, I will continue to use the diet; otherwise not. We will see.

It is good to be back.

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character: it becomes your destiny.
