Good Morning Everyone emoticon
I'm finally back from my summer Spark break. I spent yesterday afternoon writing and posting a blog called "Today Is The First Day..." about my summer and my plans as I go forward this fall, here's a link if you want to take a look:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5799920

I also spent some time sending out goodies and messages trying to re-connect with my Spark friends. Today is "Team Day." I'm taking some time to post on my team chat's and even joined 2 new teams. As usual, we have some other things planned for this morning, an errand to run and then a visit with friends who live near where our errand takes us but I should have the afternoon free to start my new exercise routine and do some "Sparking".

My name is Carolyn
(Whitney is my last name, I'm a retired high school biology teacher = WHITNEYTEACHER)

I moved to Grants Pass, a small town in Southern Oregon in January, 2014.

I think my 4 year old grandson may not like pasta, whenever we have some he asks for a peanut butter sandwich and grapes. I suppose there are worse things he could ask for. the blessing is that he also likes corn on the cob and gamma's chockamik (his pronunciation of chocolate milk) so he's getting a little bit from every major food group. =)

please don't jump on me about carbs and fat... I was trying to be funny here OK.

The grandchildren just went home. Had them since 9am yesterday. We made a fort, made GAK, did art projects, watched a movie or two -- danced around to HAPPY FEET, and HAD A TON OF other kinds of FUN!!!!

The movie was well done. I was glad it was more FAMILY FREINDLY than most movies. I will now have to get the book so I can compare the two. =)

Just checkin' in to make sure I'm still alive and kickin' =)

I welcome the wet weather we are having on this wonderful Wednesday morning. Way more we then we had last night. Hopefully it will put a lid on some of the fires and smoke we've been having lately.

Hope everyone has a great day!

My week has been horrible! I am currently on leave from work and unsure if I will be returning. I am sure either way, there will be a struggle but I'll take it as it comes. :(

Good Morning Everyone emoticon
I've decided to take a Spark break for awhile. I just wrote a blog called, "Obsession" explaining more but I thought I should stop by the team chat page and say a quick good-bye too. I'm not giving up, still planning on continuing with my exercise and watching my diet, just spending less time in front of the computer doing Spark posts and tracking everything. After over 2 years of diligent tracking I have a pretty good idea what I can eat, what I can't and what my calorie count will end up being at the end of the day. In the last 2 years I've adjusted my calorie range from 800 per day to 1200, 1500 and 1900 to go along with the various articles I've read. My previous doctor told me, "With your family history and health issues weight loss may not be possible." I just didn't want to believe him. My current doctor is more positive but so far her suggestions haven't helped much either. Every day I walk 2 miles, do Yoga and Strength Training and am very active doing either gardening, housework or activities related to our recent move. My husband had back surgery in December and was told, "No lifting until September" so I've been doing all the heavy lifting, packing and hauling boxed down from the attic when we moved in January, helping him remodel his new shop, etc. I'm NOT sedentary or even close to it. I think the combination of early menopause and thyroid removal in 2001 is the reason for my lack of success and not anything I'm doing or not doing.

Carolyn, glad to hear you enjoyed your outing. I hope you start feeling better soon. I know arthritis can be tough to get a handle on and also a tough one to work around.

Even if we are just putting along we are doing something and that's better than nothing. =)

Pottsville was OK. It was really more of a Father's Day outing for my husband than for me, They had a lot of old steam and gas operated machinery, even a early 1900's gas operated washing machine. Besides all of that there was a giant flea market. It was nice to get out for the day though and take a break from our normal routine.

I've been trying to get into a more regular exercise routine but I think something is working against me. I was sick yesterday so decided to take it easy and try to feel better sooner. This morning I'm feeling better but the arthritis in my left knee has flared up so much I can hardly walk. I guess I'll try doing the WiiFit exercises I can manage without agrivating my knee more.

I have really fair skin and burn easily, so I fear skin cancer. I can understand your big hat and sun glasses. I hope you had a good time at the Pottsville celebration, you will have to tell us about it :).

Have a great week!!!!

Good Morning Everyone emoticon
We're doing some exploring of the area around our new home today. We're going to Pottsville, for their annual Father's Day weekend celebration. Their website description of Pottsville is, "Take a step back in time with two museums, a Pioneer Town and lots of outdoor exhibits." They have several special things going on this weekend and it will be nice to do something different.
Hope everyone has a good weekend. See you all tomorrow. emoticon

Hi Everyone emoticon
I've been busy as usual lately, mostly doing yard work. I'll be really glad when my husband finally is through with all his surgery and recovery periods so he can start doing more of it again. I've never enjoyed working outside much, I had skin cancer removed from my face a few years ago and don't really like being out in the sun much after that. My grandmother died from skin cancer also so it's kind of scary for me. I've been wearing my fashionable "old lady" sun hat and dollar store sunglasses when I go out so I'm sure I make quite a picture. I have really sensitive skin and don't really like putting chemicals on it so I don't use sunscreen as much as I should either.

I stopped walking on the trail by the canal until I discovered another route I could use. One of the houses along the way has a small dog that kept going under the fence and joining me on my walk. That wasn't bad but I couldn't get him to go home again and I was afraid of him following me onto the highway and getting hit. His owners sometimes weren't even home to come out and get him and refused to do anything about securing the fence. After crawling through the canal and climbing our steep bank to get home twice I decided I was done. The other day someone else walked by with a dog and told me how to get on the trail going the other direction so I've been going that way instead. The distance is a little shorter, 1.1 miles to the end instead of 1.25 but at least I don't have to dog-sit along the way.

Carolyn, it will be great to see your posts again!

Erin, I am so glad to have you as a leader on this team, you have keep this team going :) Thank you, for me it is always 2 steps forward and 1 back with the weight loss, but this is the longest time in forever that I have actually worked toward getting healthier and getting this weight off. I have a ways to go but the numbers are not so daunting anymore :D.

Congrats on your success Rhonda!

I don't mind the move back. I only changed it cuz Carolyn had stated she was dropping out for a while and no one else was participating. I was trying to drum up some new business -- you see how well that worked.

Sometimes I feel like it's time for me to move on but I have no place to really move on to = {
Soooo, I will keep on Steph-in' (my DH's new term for keep moving on =) and I will always know that if the team goes down, it wasn't with out me fighting to keep it going! =D

Have fun or hang on -- whichever the case my be.

My best to you both! I'm sure we will chat again later.

Maybe moving this back to the top of the list will help some. I stopped posting here because I felt like I was talking to myself, no one else except Erin occasionally ever posted anything.

Hi Everyone,
I moved this to the top sticky, so that chat would not be lost on the other page. I hope that is ok. I have been moving and I'm down 30# and a pant size, but I have not been really focused like I know I need to be, so that is what I will be working on. Directed effort at exercise, and directed food choices instead of the grab and run bit :). I hope you all are having a wonderful week! The weekend is just around the corner. We are planning on going camping in July, so that will be coming up soon....not really sure where, but we are going :)

I haven't been around as much as usual for the past few days. I haven't really been feeling right lately and finally figured out why, with Mother's Day coming up I've been thinking about my mother a lot and I really miss her. She died of breast cancer in 2004 after living with us on hospice for close to a year. I wrote a Mother's Day blog last year in her memory and posted it again today. Happy Mother's Day weekend everyone, a time to remember and hopefully to smile. emoticon

sorry to hear about your life interruptions. i pray all gets better for your family soon. i can relate to the distant parent feeling -- having a son in another state myself. know that we are lifting you in prayer. don't sweat the small stuff like a team gathering....as you mentioned -- there can always be something next year if they want to wait. OR someone else can pull it together if they can't =]

Good Morning Everyone,
I had a bit of a breakdown yesterday, the right diet and exercise just didn't happen. I got some bad news from my son on Saturday and waited all day yesterday for an update from him that didn't come. I'll try to get back on track today but it's really hard to focus when bad things are going on with your kids - it doesn't really matter how old they are, you're their mom forever. He lives in New Mexico and we're in Oregon so it's too far for me to drop in and check on him and with my husband having surgery next week we can't take a trip right now, I don't really think it would help much anyway, there are some things mom's just can't fix.

I think I'm going to postpone the idea of a team get together at my house this year. Summer is approaching fast and we have too much going on here right now plus neither my husband or I really have the physical abilities to get ready for a party, hard to do without the use of your right hand (him) or right arm (me).

We are still prepping for the COLOR RUN. Cheryl posted a video for us to look at... I haven't watched it yet but I'm thinking I may be sorry I did afterwards... 8)

youtu.be/2qBK1snWRuA

Color Run is May 17th so we still have a few weeks to get ourselves prepared. Most of us are comfortable walking 5K but not in anyway running. It's a good thing it's not timed too, cuz though we don't move at a snails pace we tend to cover the distance in about 18 to 20 minutes per mile. I figure it will take us about and hour to complete -- maybe a bit more but only because of all the participants/traffice.

Are you going to be able to attend -- even if it is just for viewing? We'd love to see you!

Carolyn, sounds like your activity schedule is a good one with the switch from afternoons to mornings.

You might want to re-think all the home/garden improvements. I know immediate gratification is highly desired, but I think your body is trying to tell you to slow it down. I'd hate to see you both down for the count.

Hope your arm gets better soon. Take care.

Slow and steady wins the race!

emoticon emoticon Hopefully today will be a bit cooler, it's been over 90 degrees for the last two days, breaking a record for the last 35 years. I still managed to get my 2 mile walk in but put it off until the afternoon on Wednesday and found myself walking in temperatures that were much too hot for health. Yesterday I reversed my schedule and did the things in and around the house in the afternoon and walked in the morning.
emoticon

I've been doing a lot more lifting than I really should because of Rod's back surgery recovery time and, as a result, I've developed tennis elbow, tendonitis in my right elbow that is really painful. Today I have an appointment to be fitted for some kind of support that's supposed to help. I'm worried about how restrictive the support will be though because I'm still the only one that can do much lifting or moving of things around our house and can't really stop using my right arm for the several months my doctor said it will take to heal. It's really all the gardening I've been doing that has caused continuing pain, pulling weeds, pushing a mower and carrying watering cans to the end of our property to water the blueberry bushes is pretty painful. This weekend we're planning on turning the soil in the raised garden beds and planting our vegetable garden - no end to the "fun."

I haven't given up. It's just that since Steph isn't available then I'm a little limited as to where I can go. I can meet you in Medford -- just about anywhere -- because I can walk. However, having my husband drive me there then coming back for the grandkids and them driving back to Medford is a bit much on our budget and car.

I'll still be walking -- Tuesday's with whomever (although we don't have anyone at this point but me).... and Thursday's with Michele and Cheryl when they are both available.

Looking forward to seeing you again, Cheryl.

I'm wondering if the dreary weather has anything to do with our lack of motivation. More than likely I'm thinking. I hope it clears up for us so we can all enjoy the outdoors a bit more.

Carolyn,
Good luck with your Nordic workout. It shounds like you are coming along nicely.

I used to have a decent tasting lentil chili/soup recipe. I'll have to see if I can dig it up again.

Enjoy the day,
Erin

Good Morning Everyone emoticon
The weather here is starting to improve, it's supposed to be 69 and cloudy but no rain so maybe I can get a walk in without having to dodge raindrops. I tried using my new Nordic walking poles yesterday on our pretty long driveway. After several trips to the gate and back the dogs lost interest in following me and just sat and watched, I think I really confused them.
Yesterday for lunch we had some of the tomato/lentil soup I made. Rod and I agreed that it's edible (barely) but I won't make it again. The best part of lunch was the slice of homemade bread I had with the soup. I don't have much going on here today, just hoping to get more exercise, my motivation has been seriously lacking lately.

Thanks for the link Erin. I think we may have fixed the gopher problem. We saw a cat hunting in our front yard a couple of weeks ago and the gopher activity stopped in both our front and back yard. We did find a new mound outside our gate in the front so I went to Grange CoOp and bought some gopher poison to put in the hole. Since it was outside the gate and placed in the tunnel underground I wasn't worried about our dogs (or anyone elses) getting the poison. We haven't seen any more activity out there recently either so I think it might have worked. I still have 3 more blocks of poison left in case one of them comes back.

Any time during the summer should be fine. Just let me know when.

I just remembered the information on the gopher spikes. ULTRA Sonic Gopher Spike. Sweeney's are solar powered. My DH got them at Harbor Freight.

Here is an Amazon link:

Erin - I was planning on making the get-together a "plus one" so people could come with a spouse, friend, son, daughter, etc. I wouldn't really want to go to something as much if I couldn't bring my husband. Let me know when you think a good weekend would be, maybe a couple dates to pick from, and I'll talk to Rod and see which he thinks would be best.

Steph is participating in the BLC25 12 Week Challenge Team with me. We're required to post every day and I've seen her there so she's still around, probably just busy.

I'll be fine soon... I'm sure of it.... God doesn't allow me to wallow in self pity for long 8)

As for the gathering -- that shouldn't be a problem unless it's during the time we are out of town. David and I can try and arrange to be there on a weekend. I can bring him can't I. 8D

I just don't have the ability to drive my self up there during the week and having David chauffeur me isn't always possible since we have the grandkids to contend with at varying times. I don't like to give him more than he can handle and too many schedule changes can be difficult for him to work with.

I could walk to most Medford locations during the time Grants Pass folks could get down here!

Has anyone heard from Steph lately?!?!?

Erin - I hope you're doing better today. I'd like to wait a little while to plan the date for our get-together at my house. I'd like it if you could come too and there really isn't any rush, we could do it at the end of summer as easily as the beginning. Whatever is going on, I really hope things get better for you soon.

Carolyn, seems everyone is busy with other things right now...

I am just in a funk right now and not much in the way of chatting -- more like sobbing. It appears that I may not be doing much in the way of joining you in Grant's Pass. I will continue to walk in Medford but I don't know that I will be able to make it out your way without putting the rest of my family in a bind right now. Pray for me, as this is just one in a long list of challenges and disappointments I am dealing with right now.

I decided to spend some time looking at different fitness trackers on Amazon. I just ordered a "LifeTrak C200 Core". It's a fitness tracker and heart rate monitor combined. You don't have to set up your stride length, it's calculated automatically, and it was less expensive than either the Fitbit or the Spark Activity Tracker. It's also a watch, you wear it on your wrist so also it's not likely to get lost like something you keep in a pocket or clip to your clothing. Here's a link if you want to take a look:

emoticon Good Morning Everyone
Still raining here today. I have a pretty long list of errands to run this morning, one thing I'm hoping to find are some nice plants for my window seat planter. Maybe I can get some Nordic walking in this afternoon. I found a YouTube video showing me how to correctly use the poles and practiced in the living room yesterday before heading out to our pretty long driveway to practice between rain showers. It's supposed to burn 20% more calories than regular walking so I'm hoping it turns out to be money well spent for the poles.
Hope everyone has a great Friday - TGIF! emoticon

REBBUL67 - I forgot to say thanks for the plant suggestions. I have a Christmas Cactus that we inherited from my mother in law and originally had it in my kitchen window seat. Before long the leaves all started turning pink and the plant in general wasn't looking too good. I looked it up online and got the following causes for pink leaves: too much water, too little water, too much sun. Evidently they are rain forest plants, not desert plants and don't really do well in direct sunlight. I bought a self-watering pot and replanted my 3 smaller cacti into the one bigger pot and moved it into our den where it gets more indirect light. The sites I looked at also said they don't like to be re-potted so I was a little worried about that but so far it seems to be doing better.

I lived in Medford in the '80's and remember it could get pretty hot in the summer. I think Grants Pass is a little cooler because it's closer to the mountains. I was thinking early June because we will want to be outside, I don't want any chance of us getting rained out.

Carolyn,

First of all emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon on finding that your new doctor's advice and new medication is helping you!!! It is very frustrating when you feel you are doing everything right and you don't see the results you want. I am very happy for you!!!!! emoticon yourself, you are definitely worth it!

I am a definite plant person (indoor plants anyway). I have about 100 houseplants. I may be a plant hoarder LOL. Cactus has really shallow roots, and there are several different varieties. Succulents are good, because some will spread to fit the space you have.

WTG joining the BLC25 challenge. I think you will enjoy it. I am in the Spring into action BLC challenge. Our Black Panther team has been #1 3 weeks in a row. It really keeps you focused on all aspects of a healthy lifestyle. I am a way slow loser though, this week I am down only .02 pounds. The funny thing is that when I joined spark I set a goal, and then I wasn't here for a long time, and gained weight (that's not funny but I have lost 23# and the spark thing keeps telling me, "you have not lost any weight", well I am ALMOST back to my starting point from a few years ago, so I should be seeing, you lost .02# soon :D). I am going to get this weight off of me an ounce at a time if I have to.

Early in June it should be in the 90's Carolyn. I know Medford/Grants Pass is normally a little warmer than K Falls, but we usually have 80's/90's weather by then.

The rain is falling and the wind is blowing here today, indoor exercise is looking like the option for today. I ordered another fitness game for my Wii yesterday, maybe something new will inspire me to exercise more. I'm participating in the BLC 25 challenge team, the new 12 week challenge round starts April 1 so I'm hoping that will help some too. I got on the scale again this morning and my weight loss is holding emoticon Always before I would lose and then the next day the scale would show the old number again so I'm pretty happy that it's "sticking" this time.

Are there any plant people out there? Our new house has a window seat in the kitchen and I bought a planter to put there thinking some flowers in the kitchen would be nice. I went to the local nursery yesterday to get some advice about what to plant in my planter and they weren't any help at all so I decided to go home and do some research myself, I'd sure love some suggestions. The planter is 30 inches long and about 5 inches wide and tall so the plants can't have deep roots or grow to be too big. I don't think I want anything that will drape over the side because I don't want to worry about damage to the wood on the window seat. I think I want perennials too, I don't want to have to replant too often. I'm not really a plant person but am trying to learn, thanks.

I'm thinking maybe sometime in June would be a good time for our get-together. What's the weather likely to be in early June?

I'm pretty happy today. I just ran the weight loss report from my Spark reports and I LOVE the graph! I've lost almost 6 pounds since April 1. I've been following my new doctor's advice pretty closely (if you missed it, my last blog details her advice) and that, combined with my increased thyroid hormone prescription is finally giving me some results emoticon My weight usually fluctuates about 3 pounds in a day so I haven't really allowed myself to get excited but this morning I saw a number I haven't seen for over a year since coming back to SparkPeople. Maybe this will give me the motivation I've been lacking for getting more exercise. It's hard to be motivated if you feel nothing you do will give you results.

You could post a general announcement for the few that do check in regularly (some of our outta towners could see it then as well). Once you get a general idea of interested parties you could reply to each pesonally with specific details regarding date, time, location, etc.

It wouldn't be any different then the SOS Outings posting that we ran -- basically used to get an idea of numbers and points of interest.

Sorry for any misunderstandings.

Slow and steady wins the race!

Good Morning Everyone emoticon
Hope you all had a nice Easter. We're fighting an invasion of Carpenter Bees at our new house now, I think I liked gophers better! I have a dentist appointment this morning and then I'm heading to Home Depot to see if they sell anything to not only kill the existing ones but also discourage others from boring into our house. When I Googled Carpenter Bees looking for a solution I found out that woodpeckers can smell their larva and will drill holes in the side of the house so they can get to them. I think woodpeckers would be even worse than the bees!

Erin - There are 200 people on this team. I wasn't really thinking about sending out a blanket invitation to 200 people I don't know giving them (and anyone else online) my address. I was thinking more along the lines of inviting the people who are actually active on the site, the walking and Color Run groups and the other few people who post here occasionally. I would ask the people who want to come to contact me via Spark mail for the address, that way I know who I'm giving it to.

Carolyn,
Sounds great. If you want to plan something then let's post it with details on the forum page. We could list it under SOS Outings or another forum all together. Just let us know when and what to bring.

Once we have all the details would might try sending a group announcement as well ---- hmmmm come to think of it maybe we should do an announcement for the Color Run meet!

See ya 'round,
Erin

Thanks Steph,
I don't think very many people are checking in here lately. Nice to see you on the BLC team too emoticon
