Interesting article:

For fat loss, calories may matter more than fat or carbs

(Reuters Health) - Want to lose body fat? At least initially, a diet low in fat may be better than one that limits carbohydrates, a U.S. study suggests.

To test the effects of cutting fat or carbs head-to-head, researchers put 19 obese adults in the hospital twice, each time reducing their calorie intake by about 30 percent and putting them all on identical exercise routines.

During one stay, they reduced calories by reducing the proportion of carbs, and for the other one they cut a similar number of calories by reducing fats.

Eliminating fat calories for six days during the experiment led to about 89 grams (3.1 ounces) a day of body fat loss, compared with 53 grams (1.9 ounces) a day of fat loss from restricting carbs, the study found.

“Our data and our model suggest that the body doesn’t care that fat calories were cut,” Kevin Hall, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, said by email. “It just kept burning the same amount of fat as it did before which led to a substantial imbalance between the fat eaten and burned and therefore body fat loss.”

But when researchers calculated the long-term impact of the two approaches, they estimated that differences in fat loss would diminish over time.

Globally, 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese, according to the World Health Organization. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, joint disorders and certain cancers.

Previous research has found obese people often struggle to shed excess pounds or keep weight off when they do lose it. Lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can often help in the short-term but fail to produce lasting results, particularly among people who have more than 100 pounds to lose before reaching a healthy weight.

For the current study, Hall and colleagues set out to test a popular belief that drives many people to try low-carb diets – that reducing foods like pasta, white bread and sugary treats can curb supplies of the hormone insulin, which in turn limits the body’s ability to accumulate fat. With less insulin, the body may also burn existing fat stores for energy and lose weight.

Ten men and nine women were hospitalized twice for two-week stays, which included five days to establish a baseline diet before starting the experiment restricting calories through fat or carbohydrate reduction. In addition to prepared meals, they all exercised on a treadmill for one hour a day at a set pace and incline.

In one respect, the study lent credence to popular beliefs about low-carb eating. Cutting carbs did indeed decrease insulin production in the study. It also led to an increased breakdown in stored fats that can be used for energy, a process known as fat oxidation.

By contrast, the low-fat diet didn’t significantly change insulin production or fat oxidation.

It’s hard to say how these results might translate into weight loss in the real world, given how tightly controlled the food intake and energy output was for study participants during their hospitalized diet test, the authors point out in the journal Cell Metabolism.

But the results do offer solid evidence that low-carb diets aren’t superior for fat loss, Susan Roberts, a nutrition researcher at Tufts University, notes in an editorial accompanying the study.

“Basically what the results say is that overall energy balance is the biggest factor – how do you cut calories in what you eat,” Roberts said by email.

To help answer this question, more research is needed that explores how consumption of fat, carbohydrates and protein influences how many calories people eat, she said.

“Moderation is not a cool word these days, but if it actually works better we should be working out how to make that the case,” Roberts said.

Sorry for just seeing your question emoticon emoticon

Low carb is definitely better. Fat free diets were a 90's fad. Doctors are now saying that healthy fats such as avocado & nuts create satiety and fullness, therefore increasing weight loss. It is definitely what helped me be successful in losing 126 lbs.

Everyone is different so low fat diets may work for some just not for me.

Great ideas Nancy...

maybe consider a vitamin supplement if you don't like Calcium rich food. Consult with your doctor to get his/her professional advice.

Do you like cheese a ice cream (not sherbet)? Non-Dairy - almonds, black strap molasses, figs, broccoli, etc. Google (or whatever your search engine) "high calcium foods non dairy" for additional ideas.

Looking at the packaging you should find it in the same isle as the quinoa and rice. Found online though at www.bobsredmill.com/organic-farro.ht
ml
that is a good brand too, I've gotten quinoa and such from that company that was good.

I never thought of putting it in tuna or egg salad. I haven`t seen farro at Walmart or my local grocery stores. Is it usually in the ethnic foods section?

I've never tried farro, but growing up near a mininite (sp?) community we had wheat berries. My favorite thing to do with them was to add them to tuna salad. Or egg salad. Yum.

The way I cook kale is to put two cans of chicken broth in a large kettle and get it to the boiling point, meanwhile adding some chopped garlic. I add the kale. As it heats it will wilt down into the broth. Then I cover it and let it cook until it is tender. When it is tender, I check to see if there's too much broth left and if there is, I turn up the heat and cook it fast, evaporating some of the juice. I serve it in a bowl topped with a little wine vinegar. If you don't like the vinegar, you may need a bit more salt, but I like the vinegar.

Anybody eat kale? I got some kale to juice, but it smells funky, almost like a chemical. I tried parboiling it and then shocking it before I juice it, that makes it a little better, but I still can't get over the taste, smell. Should I just toss the kale? My hubby bought 3 huge bags of the stuff so I hate to waste it.

deep fried is the only way I'll eat okra. But I was reintroduced to brussel sprouts here recently, with EVOO, salt and pepper and then grilled, oh my goodness they are good (as long as you don't cook them to long) I'm addicted! Some rosemary and maybe some thyme and they are absolutely yummy!

I there a oodles of people out there who like pan fried okra, or okra in stews, etc. But my only experience with it was that it was glue-y and I couldn't eat it. But years later, someone introduced me to deep fried okra, and I knew I'd found heaven....ok, just a facsimile thereof. LOL

No, I don't. I steam them and eat them as is, with a smidgen of salt. I like them that way and don't find them bitter or particularly bland. I think I'll experiment a bit the next time I cook them.

Never, EVER give up. Just pick yourself up and keep going.

Maybe it`s the way I`ve had them prepared Nancy. A lot of people compare them to cabbage but I love cabbage. I find Brussels sprouts bland & bitter. Do you have any tasty recipes for them?

I love roasted asparagus! The only veggie I can think of that I`d rather do without is Brussels sprouts.

asparagus have to be my favorite veggie! But I do like almost all veggies.

Well, I slice it, dredge it in beaten egg, then flour (or maybe cornmeal) then bake at 350 degrees on a cookie sheet sprayed with vegetable spray (like Pam). I used to do the above, but instead of baking it, I'd fry it. sigh. Too much fat/calories. emoticon

How do I love to eat it? In a restaurant, as eggplant parmesan. Again, too fattening, but YUM! emoticon

I don`t think I`ve ever eaten eggplant. What`s your favorite way to prepare it?

I am a total veggie lover so this is a hard question for me.

I love both cucumbers and baby carrots a lot. I can`t choose one favorite because they are both my favorite!
