Random Act of Kindness story: Unfortunately, I can't take credot for this act but it's such a great story I have to share it:
Here's a bit of background...my client suffers from extreme anxiety and has a history of huge health traumas. She was in yesterday to see the psychiatrist. He meets with our clients weekly, despite being the Chief of Staff of the hospital, the full time inpatient psyc, the father of 12 children, he sees the 900 odd clients of the program for which I work. Suffice it to say that he is a VERY busy man. Appointments are scheduled for 20 minutes, with the last 5 minutes to be for documentation. Clients recognize and appreciate how busy he is and take little time for pleasantries.
My client was very upset and anxious yesterday and asked me to come in with her so that she didn't forget to tell him everything about her meds that we had previously discussed. We walked into the meeting room and, in response to his question of how she's doing, she immediately started talking about her anxiety and concerns that she has brain cancer and death is imminent.
He stopped her, invited her to sit, and asked her what she likes to do. She responded that she does not want to die. Again, he stopped her and asked her if she likes to garden. She does. He asked again what she likes to do. Well, she likes to bake. What does she like to bake. She made a great cheese cake a few weeks ago. Tell me about it, what goes into it? Did you share it? Heather had some? Are her cheese cake making skills improving, deteriorating, or staying the same? She visibly relaxed talking about something she enjoys. Somehow, the conversation naturally turned to her health, her meds, etc. She left the office exactly 20 minutes later, with the agreement that his note would be dictated rather than written. Everyone wins! She felt great and listened to, the next patient didn't have to wait any longer. And he and I will receive a piece of the next cheese cake to determine her cheese cake making baseline
For a man as busy as he to take the time to make small talk was the kindest thing I've seen in a long while and I thought I'd share it.
