Wonderful, Elaine! It is amazing how different we feel without all those substances in our bodies. Keep up the great work!

Day 5 of detox and the headaches have been minimal. I haven't had a Diet Coke since Saturday! I have more energy and clarity than I've had in a long time. Hopefully feeling well will encourage me to keep eating "clean" when temptation strikes. I made a cherry pastry for a co-workers birthday and haven't even wanted a bite. (Of course, I know that if I have one bite, I'll eat a large section.)

I'm not sure about the shopping guide. When I did my detox, I simply cut out the foods I was detoxing.

I like a hemp protein powder ... I really like hemp seeds. I order it from nuts.com. Here's a link to the page so you can read about it.

I am on Day 3 of detox. Off coffee since the start of Lent in addition to now eliminating sugar, dairy & wheat - I never thought I would ever or be able to give up coffee so that needed to happen first. Cant say I'm feeling fantastic at this point. Not sleeping well ( not unusual anyway) and had a headache lasting 1 1/2 days. However, I am hanging in there. What if, for me, this is part of the detox & my body is reacting to detoxifying itself?

I'm still in detox, and I was going to do it for the full 40 days, but then I started adding back....but just a little bit. I don't really have cravings, but after nearly a month, I wouldn't mind a piece of pizza or some other treat. My birthday is at the end of this month and I wanted to celebrate a little with a favorite meal. NOW, I just got an email from my church, saying they are doing a pilot program of the Daniel Plan, and they have chosen 6 people for the test group and I am one of them. I am thrilled. We have a huge church, and I think it would be wonderful for us. We start this Sunday. There goes my pizza. ;)

The only thing I've added back is caffeine when I have a migraine. I enjoy the clean feeling of not having the bloating, joint pain and migraines that I had with gluten. I love sleeping better with dairy.

Thanks for the recipe! I have always liked garbanzo beans, but since I've been on the Daniel Plan, I use them in a lot of different ways.

So, I've been on the detox since January 7th, and I've lost about 10-12 lbs. I have just started to add back a little bit of dairy in the past week. I had some organic butter on a baked potato and didn't notice anything. And I had a little sprinkling of cheese on a few items over the weekend and my stomach feels a little bloated. I started the Daniel Plan because I wanted to know if the food I was eating was upsetting my digestion.....but now, I hope it's not cheese!!! :)

What is everyone's experience when adding food back after detox?

Chickpea poppers are what some people call roasted chick peas or garbanzo beans usually mixed with some olive oil and seasonings and roasted in the oven to make crispy and crunchy. In the Daniel Plan book, they call them "crunchy chickpeas" and have a recipe. If you don't have the book, you can set up a free user account at www.danielplan.com and go to the food tab and click on and download the 3 day meal plan, which has the recipe for crunchy chickpeas there. Basically all of the recipes I've seen in DP and online include a couple of cans of chickpeas, rinsed and drained, coated with olive oil, salt and some seasonings. I have seen combinations of chili powder, cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic salt, onion salt, dill weed etc. After the chickpeas are combined with the seasonings and olive oil they are roasted in the oven at 400-425 F for 30-40 minutes or more to get the crunch. After they cool they can be stored in an airtight container. I hope that helps. Good luck. I made them but I think I put them in a ziplock container too soon and they went soggy too quickly. I will try again soon.

I've definitely had periods of feeling hungry at times. So I usually try to drink a lot of water at those times and make sure I have 'emergency food packs" in my purse with 25 almonds, veggies, etc. to bridge the gap until the next meal. It usually works :) It has seemed to improve as the detox goes on. Hang in there!

Hi NewLife you are almost through the hardest part--the beginning of the detox. I'm on day 8 and was happy to see I had lost 10 pounds. I realize a lot is fluid loss but I still like seeing it go down.By the way I haven't found any pasta sauce without sugar or additives either. So I usually resort to chopped tomatoes, garlic, onion and fresh basil or a healthy dose of italian herbs and red peppers for a quick sauce.

All the best in your detox--praying for you.

Hi there DP team,
I'm Wendy and I've been enjoying reading your posts. I've finished 4 full days of the DP detox--so no sugar, gluten, additives, dairy, caffeine or alcohol. Coffee is always the hardest thing for me to give up but so far so good and although I know it is mostly water related I like seeing the scale drop. Today I am down about 8 pounds. The main thing for me is I do not feel as energetic as usual and I need to work more on adding in regular exercise--not up to 3-4 times/week yet. I've been liking the blueberry protein smoothies and enjoyed the novelty of the salmon chutney with mint and cilantro...

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Julie, I am totally with you ... back to natural. Of course, I feel a little forced because of the gluten induced migraines, but whatever. It's working for me. I'm sticking with it so whatever it takes. I'm LOVING the back to basics! The flavors are simply awesome! And cooking really is easy!

Tortillas ... I look for ingredients I can read. If there is a chemical on the label, it goes back on the shelf. I did find one brand I brought home and they weren't all that. I won't buy them again. Perhaps I am better off without them.

So today is DAY 7 of the detox plan. I'm pretty sure I haven't fudged - at least not on purpose. It's been challenging to read some of the labels, and even harder to cook and prep food for the next day after working all day. (I've decided I need a 6 burner stove so I can cook a bunch of stuff at once! :) )

I have really enjoyed the challenge so far. I've been more regular, and I've lost a few lbs. Mostly, it's been fun trying to come up with interesting meals. Saturday night I was not in the mood to cook, so I sauteed a little diced onion and garlic in grapeseed oil, through in a can of tomatoes and let that simmer, then added a can of red beans and brown rice. It was SO GOOD. LOL, this detox has been good for me because I think I appreciate the true flavors of the food I'm eating. (When I was a kid and had to eat rice & beans, I would have scowled.)

We had pizza in the house last night. After 7 days of detox I allowed myself to have a small slice (which turned into 2) Within 30 minutes I developed a severe migraine. I sure learned my lesson behind that decision. I am very re-committed to my detox!

@Julianne - I feel you! I went out to dinner with my sister last night - it was day 6 of detox from everything :) and I was looking at the menu like....."what can I possibly order? water?" It was a Mexican restaurant so I just got grilled chicken and rice. I really wanted guacamole beecause I knew it would fill me up, plus it's so good for you, but when I asked, they put mayo in it. Yuck. So, it's been challenging. Also, it was super hard to not eat the chips and salsa. Since they had already sort of given us the impression that they use pre-made stuff (salsa, etc), I was pretty sure the chips came from a bag.

What are everyone's thoughts on tortilla chips and corn tortillas? I bought the organic ones from Trader Joe's and they all say "ground corn" - nothing about flour. Just curious. After 7 days of detoxing, I don't want to undo it with flour....

Hi Oopsie-daisy :). I've just completed the detox phase, and I have found in the past few days that some of my sinus and allergy issues have reduced. I'm not sure what's making the biggest impact - dairy, wheat, or sugar. I was not 100% successful on removing all of those, but, hm...about 95%.

Let us know how it goes for you.

Hi Juliana, I sometimes have hectic schedules that cause irregular eating times, and found that it helped me to find favorite healthy options and reroute my journey a little so that I could go by those places that would have something that specifically fit my dietary requirements. A couple of my favorites over time have been:

- Starbucks: some of them carry protein snack packs that have been fairly healthy. For example, tune, apple, cheese & egg. These protein packs change, and some would not work for DP, but it's a source I consider. Also, sometimes a hot tea treat satisfies the need until I can get home for something more planned.

- hummus and veggie sticks for the ride home (tucked in a fridge at work) has worked for me too.

- Homemade flax crackers provide a nice crunch and are really portable

- my current favorite is something inspired by one of LadyHawkes bog posts: she was using (if I'm recalling correctly), steamed coconut milk and tea. I'm trying to avoid coconut, so I've been steaming unsweetened almond milk with a cinnamon herbal tea and really love it. A good replacement for coffee.

Best of luck :).

Carla, the vegetable beef crockpot stew and the blueberry flax smoothie are my favorites so far that I've tried on the Daniel Plan, too. Yum!

Juliana, I had that problem too before I decided that fast food fixes are not worth longer term regrets.

Cathy,

I already spend an hour to an hour and a half each way to work so I would not make sense to go any other way. I have been listening to book or music in the car. Overcomer was on the other day when I was thinking of stopping for a frosty on my way to work and the part of the song that says "Don't give up, don't give in your an overcomer" is something I needed to hear.

Juliana, can you drive home a different way that has less fast food temptations? Or will have you watching the road more because it is different. Sometimes a change of pace is distracting and gives us things to focus on where the norm lets our minds numb out and wander to the bright colors and festivity of fast food places and advertisements. Those folks know what they are doing trying to attract us to their businesses! Do what you can to distract yourself to healthier things! YOU are soooooo worth the effort!

Starting day 5

doing the Glutton, dairy, and sugar. I do fine except when I am in the car. All the advertisements and the fast food places on the way home SUCK!!! I have not stopped but it is so tempting. I wonder if that is how an alcoholic feels when they are trying to stop drinking.

Oopsie-Daisy....love that name...I too have had stomach issues in the past and I am now on day 8 detox, I have had 95% less stomach issues, it's amazing. My fav detox recipe so far has been the beef and veggie stew you cook in the crockpot, really yummy. I love the blueberry, flax smoothie too.

emoticon Julie!

White rice is gluten free, so it's OK for the detox, but brown rice is more nutritious, thus the suggestion to have brown rice. I would use the Jasmine rice until you get brown rice.

I've been very simplistic in my cooking for detox. I needed to go gluten free for life because it causes me daily migraines. I've been cooking very simple soups with fresh veggies. I soak dried beans and cook a pot to add to salads or to change up a soup. It's been fun to make up my own recipes and get rid of this nasty gluten. Getting rid of sugar, caffeine, and dairy was a piece of cake compared to gluten for me!

Hi! I'm Julie and I just finished day 3 of the detox. So far the toughest part has been planning, and I only cook for myself so I didn't buy a ton of fresh produce because I didn't want it to spoil before I could eat it. I was busy at work then went straight to bible study & didn't make it to the store tonight.....so trying to come up with lunch for tomorrow. In the book it sags brown rice is okay during detox......but what about Jasmine rice? It's all I have at home.

I decided to detox completely at once, and it honestly hasn't been bad at all. I have had stomach and digestive problems for about 6 months and I have always had allergies (congestion, sinuses) so I hope this detox will help my body to heal and give me some answers. Does anyone have any favorite detox recipes?

Tomorrow is taco day at school. I will have a hard time but I can do it. I can have everything on the taco except the cheese and I will bring my glutton free chips and make it into nacho's.

Going into Day 6 wow, hard to believe. Feeling pretty good, though I am having some detox show up in the form of skin out breaks, mucusy sinus and yeast infection....the body is really working hard to get rid of all the junk I have put in it. It's not a fun part of the process, but signs of detox are encouraging to me, it means my body is fighting to get healthy. Epsom Salt baths have been helpful and soothing, steaming the sinuses and I take olive leaf extract for the yeast, it's working....

Because my symptoms have been so severe, I have had a tTG IgA run specifically for celiac's disease, knowing that it may come back normal because I've been eating gluten free with only 2 slips that I know of when I didn't realize gluten would be in obscure items. I've not taken an Alcat.

Cathy, thanks for the info....I'm definitely going to have to try the tempeh, very curious. I'm very impressed with your wheat detox timeframe and am praying your migraines will cease...

Btw, have you, or anyone else on the team here, taken an Alcat or other allergy/sensitivities test?

Dawn, when I detox caffeine, I have migraines too. Flushing the toxins out with plenty of filtered water helps. Naps help. Also, a hot bath with Epsom salts and baking soda is nice ... and a good moisturizing lotion afterward.

I'm STILL detoxing wheat/gluten from my body and it's been nearly a month. I think it's good to remember that our bodies are excellent store houses for the chemicals that we put into them. My symptoms are growing less, but I am still having them. Know that it may take more than 10 days to detox some of the things that you are working on. But, God is still on the throne!

Thanks everyone for your input. I made quinoa for the first time in my life this morning. I started on day 3 of the detox because the store I shopped at didn't have tempeh or unsweetened coconut. Those ingredient are needed day 1 and day 2. The weather is just too cold to venture out to the store, so I will just re-arrange the days.
I'm nervous, because I didn't have coffee. In the past that sets me up for severe migraines. I think I will need to go through the migraines to detox, Any suggestions?
I plan to drink LOTS of water to help cleanse my system faster. I also am starting my treadmill program, very slowly during this detox time.

Dana, I'd say Google the specific brand that you bought. The sugar content is going to depend on what you actually bought. I've found reading labels that different manufacturers are as different as night and day. But the internet is AWESOME to help me out when I throw wrappers away!

I've had tempeh before. Bought it at Whole Foods. Kroger with a health foods section also carries it. It's chewy with a nutty flavor.

Hi Dawn, good luck on starting the detox :). I haven't tried tempeh, but I'd like to - let me know what you think once you try it, and how you're using it. One of my favorite things so far is unsweetened almond milk, and it doesn't send my sinuses over the edge either.

I'm just past day 4, and things have gone pretty well, although I messed up with a small amount of stuffing - sampling while cooking for the family. My biggest challenges so far are digestive disruption...

Wondering if anyone here has thoughts about veggie chips or wasabi peas? I found these in a health food store and they seemed like a good idea, but I'm unsure of the sugar content. Unfortunately I discarded the wrappers with the nutritional content.

God is good.

Tomorrow I start the Daniel Plan Detox. Starting at 10 days, then re-assess. Grocery shopping was fun. Many new items. No one knew what tempeh was. Could not find it. Came home and googled it. Still need to buy.
