We don't have an April Challenge as of yet - you haven't missed anything.

I suspect that our co-leaders team has been extraordinarily busy just getting through March. We'll hope for a fitness or nutrition challenge in May!!

Ah Stacy,
If I had thought of your friend's ideas for push-ups I most certainly would have completed more! I really enjoyed reading her blog.

Do we have an April Challenge or did I miss it?

My personal challenge is to rotate between push-ups, planks, and squats.

Push ups are horrible! My wrist are weak. I do 'wall push ups' but that's just not the same. I use to do 'women's push ups'. I enjoy the 'stability ball push ups', too; though, once again, not the same....
I HOPE to get to the point eventually, where I can do at least 10 at a time.
Not rushing it though.

Push-ups?
I like push up bras, does that count? As for the other kind...my wrists aren't strong enough. I do occasionally do wall push-ups, but only if it's part of a challenge.

I'd much rather get up from my desk and walk a little. Although, usually it's just to go to the kitchen and make another cup of coffee or get a glass of water. Yeah, I'm not much on calisthenics.

Thank you for the suggestion. Actually, I found the answer to my how-to-do-a-push-up-with-Achilles-tendon-d
amage problem right here on the Spark website.

The answer: Do a push-up using a stability ball. With the ball supporting my lower body (i.e., with my feet off the ground), do 2 sets of 15 push-ups.

You can see a demo of the exercise here: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercis

MSBOOTCAMP - POPEYE is challenging those of us who may not do pushups to give them a try.

Glad to see so many folks responding to the March challenge.

We have only a few days left to get 20 unique posters on this thread. We need 12 more members.

I saw Popeye's tragic-plea email of 7 March, and thought I'd pop my head in over here.

What's up with the pushups?

I did 9 a couple of days ago. While balancing on the FLAT side of my BOSU. It's two days later, so I guess I'll do some more. Is THAT what this thread is for?

Cheers! I am on deadline, and need to get some writing done, aside from my fitness goals today!

By my count - and POPEYE correct me if I'm wrong - we have seven unique Writers posting to this thread. We only need another 13!!

Do you have friends on the Writers Team? Encourage them to come out and take part in the March challenge.

I took a day off yesterday and did absolutely nothing except my 10,000 steps. And as of tomorrow, I'm going to have the two "middle" grand kids - 10 and 7. Maybe they'll help me do push-ups!!

Just completed 5 push-ups (floor on toes) with good form. Not bad with pneumonia and minimal to no activity for 5 weeks. My record is 12.

MARCIA-DC, How about the modified pushup on one's knees. That should take any stretch or weight off the archilles. Would it work for you?

POPEYETHETURTLE, Yes, I can read kaeps esrever Scary.

I can't wait until this bronchitis is gone and I can exercise again! Exercise again? Did I just say that? Maybe I am delirious with fever too! (it's been over six weeks)

Joining the push-up goal. I did 3 sets of 15 wall push-ups before I left the house today. Experimenting with the counter variety and floor variety still. Spark people, what have you done to me?

I am visiting this after the truly heart-wrenching email I received from POPEYE, describing in great detail and much pathos the loneliness of this room. It appears that others raced to rescue the lonely turtle, who no longer wallows in despair. So to you I pay my heartiest homage for an email so powerful that I could not ignore my duty to report in.

All that being said, I cannot do regular push-ups, but can do wall push-ups. The original note indicated that everyone can participate in a floor push-up . . . merely mind over matter. Since I have had a knee replacement I find floor work very difficult. So if my dear leader would try to do a couple of push-ups with a golf ball under his left knee, I would be much beholden. Of course, I jest . . . and having seen the dreadful results of his own regimen, find myself thinking even more highly of the wall variety.

I shall begin wall push-ups . . . immediately. With the permission of leadership, of course. I may be lame, but I definitely "knows me lines of authority." (The "knows me" is a fragment of what I believe to be authentic "Popeye Speech.") Have a grand day, one and all, from Jane (speaking heavily with tongue in cheek . . . hence the expression "cheeky?")

OUCH! (and why don't we have an emoticon for that?)

My brother, a retired Marine Major of a partial rupture on one Achilles tendon and a total rupture on his other Achilles Tendon.

Other than the fact he couldn't walk and it was very painful, he said the full complete rupture was "interesting". He was running along a sidewalk at lunch when he was cut off by a guy on a bicycle. He had to cross one foot over the other in order not to be run down, and when his foot landed there was a loud pop and intense pain. He had to curl and do a drop and roll to not do major damage to himself.

He told me after he came to a stop and rolled around to set up, he looked at the back of his ankle and there was a large lump about 2" up where his Achilles tendon should have been.

The bike rider stopped to offer assistance, but when my brother couldn't put any weight of the foot, the called the hospital and Navy Medics took him in to the ER. He was immediately sent to the orthopedist who diagnosed the problem (there was never any real doubt) and set up an appointment for a week later (when the swelling had gone down.

The doc told him that in a complete rupture, the tendon just snaps and rolls buck up the tendon as if a window shade had released.

There was a significant amount of rehab, but since my brother was a certified water aerobics instructor, he was able to start his rehab in the pool much sooner than most could have.

We wish you a quick and smooth recover from you Achilles injury and will be glad to have you back full time in a short while. In the meantime - write like there is no end to the words flowing from your brain.

Great challenge -- I just wish I could take part! I injured my Achilles tendon some time back and while it's well on its way to healing, I have to baby myself a bit. (Even leaning forward to do a wall pushup stretches my calf / tendon a bit which is painful.)

SO . . . right now, I'm just challenging myself to walk a slow 30 minutes most days.

BUT . . . I'm hoping to be a part of the April challenge, whatever that turns out to be.

Alicia,

Awesome even!

If you are doing that many wall pushups and three real ones, you are well on your way to a stronger upper body.

If you find you can't do three sets of at least 4 reps of real push-ups after you have gotten to 3 sets of 15 reps pf wall push-ups, there is an intermediate step I learned during my last rehab stint.

Go to your kitchen and stand directly in front of a counter top. Take one step backwards, align your feet together, then lean forward to the counter, place your hands just past the edge and do counter push-ups. You can increase the difficulty on these by stepping back.

Good on ya!

Thank you, SUEFROMRI! I did 3 "real" pushups on the floor again. DD agreed my form was not the best. Thanks to your sharing, I tried and did several against the wall (lost count, maybe 13). I could feel the same muscles working, and my form was definitely better!

I haven't joined the team goal yet, but at least I'm fighting the good fight against writer's slump!

Good advice!! And if just 14 more people post here, I'll take it to the next level and ask Spark to highlight our team.

And let's all be sure and track the goal!

Last year I was lucky if I could do one well formed pushup (on my toes) I started doing as many as I could on an incline - using a chair or table. I worked up to 3 sets of 12 a day. Then I tried a push-up on the floor, good form, on toes. I could do 5!! I worked up to 12. (then got pneumonia and am on zero activities for the past three weeks)

I'm just posting this to let you know that a few reps of low numbers, against a wall or on an incline make a difference!!

20 pushups a day for five straight days?

Heck yes they count.

I counted my wall pushups today. My shoulders are too sore to do the planks, but I think I'm making progress.

Three sets of 10 today and I walked for 15 minutes.

Go Team!

Whether in my old witch persona or not, I still want credit for 100 push-ups done 10 at a time over a five day period. I mean, that counts, right?

As for doing more than one thing at a time (much less reading upside down) I have to really concentrate on what I'm doing. Otherwise I will get lost or trip over something...

Let's see if more folks will start to post here once we get the mini-mini challenge out...

Thanks for the encouragement, POPEYETHETURTLE!

I attempted "real" push-ups and found I could do 3. My wrists ache and I'm sure my form wasn't perfect, but thanks to your email, I tried!

I've enjoyed the content of this since I was .... considerably younger. I can understand the language and even speak it, albeit with a strong accent. Than ohnnick sound at the beginning of so many words is just impossible for me to say correctly.

I am a gentleman of the old school. I never, ever tell things that should stay under my hat, and there is a reason my hat is called Las Vegas.

I can do at least four things at once, walk, talk, pat my head and rub my stomach. Then I can reverse everything and continue to do four things. However, esrever ni kaeps I nehw, there are not many people who understand.

I also have the rather uncommon ability to read upside down and backward at about 300 wpm. If someone is going to read me the riot act, I can often get to the punch line before they do. They wind up thinking I'm psychic.

I'll plead guilty to psycho-reactive, but have to stay mum about psychic.

I have proved on more than one occasion that I can read someone's mind as far away as 1300 hundred miles. Those types of things are not difficult when you have a twin brother even though we aren't identical.

Queen A---er, the Queen of Things Unrepeatable in Polite Company, or Outside the Realm of Costa Kansas, in NaNoWriMo-land--winks and whispers, "I'll pretend your spell works if you'll pretend not to notice when I 'forget' to log that itty bitty piece of chocolate cake I had last night..."

The old witch woman, who doesn't appear all that old or all that witchy, sighs. After giving HEALTHYWRITER a long, considering look, she shakes her head. "You log that thing and we can both lay here belly-flopping on this cushy patch of moss, gasping like fish out of water, till we manage it." HEALTHYWRITER grins, and hears the other woman muttering something that sounds like "Killjoy...who invited HER?" Poor POPEYETHETURTLE tries to whistle and count and do push-ups at the same time, hoping to evade notice or distract MADEIT3.

"Oh goodness!" The old witch woman scoots out from under a rock to see POPEYETHETURTLE and HEALTHYWRITER talking together. "I didn't realize anyone else was here. And I have a hard time writing in present tense!" She sighs then rubs her shoulders, hugging herself. "It's cold outside and I hate doing pushups when it's cold because my shoulders ache. Do you think it's arthritis?" And then, sotto voce, "I think I have a spell for pushups. They'll all believe I can do 100!"

Mad, cackling laughter...

"Lord, there's only one thing I'm Queen of..." says the tired writer with a tinge of horror in her voice. You look up just in time to see her hide her scepter behind her back. "Nothing to see here," she says, extending a hand to POPEYETHETURTLE, who appears to have done so many push-ups today that he is now stuck to the floor. She whispers hastily in his ear, "You didn't tell them about the loo lozenges, did you?"

Oh, I'm kinda here, POPEYETHETURTLE. Just for you - after that inspirational post about how to do ONE pushup. Not sure I'll manage it, but I'm here. My goal? ONE. Sometime this month. :)

My poor right shoulder was sore today. Not re-injured, just SORE.

How sore was it?

Lifting a fork to my lips caused the blood to tun out of my face.

I tried to find a comfortable place to put my arm when I was walking. I looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame - that is if I had a hunchback and I was near anywhere named Notre Dame.

Had a low energy slump this afternoon and kicked back in my recliner for a few minutes. I tried to lift the handle (on the right side, of course) to raise the recliner? Had to roll out of the recliner and do it with my left arm instead.

I could never understand while they call it Aspercreme, but I'm glad I own stock in the parent company. My DW thinks I should just pay my dividends directly to myself and avoid the paperwork for the IRS.

That prescription for pain the Doc gave me, just in case? I filled it at 11 this morning!

I can't believe there is no one else here. When I speak loudly I hear ECHOS ... Chos ... os

Yes, POPEYE! I rarely go to MO since I retired...

I was in Estes Park for a writer's conference one year and spent the entire time gasping for air. Returning to Kansas was a most energizing experience. So if I understand what you're saying, those of us at or near sea level would have to walk another how many steps to equal 2,000 steps in Colorado?

Checked with my shoulder today and it said, "No regular pushups for you today, and if you try I am going to send a blinding pain from me straight into your brain!"

That dude is a total badasp!

What I did do was 3 sets of wall pushups, followed by three 1 minute sets of a full plank. By the end of the third set I was shaking so bad my DW asked, "Bob, what is happening?"

As my knees hit the ground I said, "I'm just practicing to have a seizure if they ever need an extra on a film just as I walk by".

She had the strangest look on her face when she said, "Wha--at? What are you talking about?" Responding, I said, "Was I doing something/ Why are you questioning me?"

Then she started laughing at me - I was just being wilfully dumb, then I told her what I had really been doing.

Aren't y'all glad I don't live to close to you? Well, unless your Spark name is MADEIT3. She's OK with it. She knows the border alarm will sound if I cross the border into Toto land.

This has been a test of the Writers Alarm System. Do not be alarmed, this has ONLY been a test.

@MADEIT3 - 2000 more steps a day at the average altitude puts as much additional stress on your body as 10,000 steps at sea-level. My last visit to Colorado found me going to Golden, CO on a business trip. Golden is about 6000 feet above sea level. I walked across the parking lot (I'm one of those who park in the distance) and took the stairs to the offices on the second floor. I was leaning against the wall just gasping. The friend I was meeting just laughed and said, "Oh, we get that all the time. People may intellectually know we're more than a mile higher than sea level, but they just can't grasp the reality of what it does to their bodies. Some people can't stay more than a couple of days before they have to leave for a lower altitude to get over their oxygen sickness and eliminate the severe headaches that people new to the area suffer".

POPEYE - I've made this the 3rd sticky topic in the Challenge section so it lands at the top.

Interesting, I've been reading State of Slim, which is also known as the Colorado Diet (I believe). In it, they say that people in Colorado - slimmest state in the nation - walk about 2000 more steps a day than people elsewhere. Just 2000 steps!!

Their advice is to get to the point of 70 minutes of activity a day, and doing so in 5 minute increments is a winner.

So come on, Writers!! Let's get out of our chairs and move around. 2000 steps more a day would mean an extra 20 minutes of walking every day.

Mea Culpa!

I've just learned something about myself that I never knew before.

I have always moved into the universe of the book that I was reading and ignore my body's call for food, bathroom relief and I am oblivious to sound unless someone touches me to get my attention. I have discovered that the same thing happens when I am in the universe of the book I am writing.

I just realized what day it was, past March 1, and realized I hadn't posted the Fitness Goals and Challenges for March.

Obvious from our January goal is that I have started with baby steps because I haven't heard from anyone that they were running team fit, nor has anyone told me they are pressing or curling their own body weight in the gym. If you do fall into that category, please don't use our small goals to drop back!

Our first goal was to do 10 minutes of cardio daily, or 70 minutes of cardio during the entire week.

This month, the physical challenge is to increase your daily cardio to 15 minutes daily - running, walking, swimming (probably in an indoor pool), snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating - you know what gets your heart rate up. Just do it! (No, I do not get paid anything by Nike for endorsing their slogan.)

Also, this month we are adding a strength building/toning exercise. Most women, and I address the ladies because there are many more of these beautiful creatures on Spark than there are men, do not have an abundance of upper body strength. The training goal for this month is to work up to 3 sets of 15 push-ups, three days a week. Notice I didn't say modified push-ups or girl push-ups. You all can do push-ups, it's simply a matter of your inner you believing what someone knows you can do.

So, 15 minutes of cardio (105 total minutes for the week if you need to take a day or two off), and 3 sets of push-ups, three days a week.

I am going to add a thread on how you can get to that goal gradually, so even if you can't do a single push-up today, by the end of the month I can guarantee that you will be able to them by the end of the month - maybe not 3 sets of 15, but you will be well on your way.

GO TEAM!
