Hai!

I didn't know this topic was here.

I often see dogs, as I make it a point of passing The Happiest Place on Earth (the local dog park).

The other day, I saw a pro walker with I think 8 dogs, all small. Very, very chatty critters. The terrier who looked like he had a pretty serious beard going was particularly friendly. :)

Here it is, the last day of April, and I had a terrible fitness month. For the first half, we had snow and cold, for the second half, pouring rain and cold. I admire Sue for getting out in it, but I never did. Here's to hoping May makes the turn and I can get out more often. The few walks I did take in April (on every one of the nice day) were glorious.

Wednesday I went for a hike with my son and the dogs. Nothing special, you say?
It was pouring rain! The trails were at least an inch under water, two or three in sections since it had rained the night before. The ledges we were negotiating were mildly slippery, but I scurried up and down as much as possible keeping safety in mind. Why did I do this? Because it felt great!

Did you take a walk today?

Stacy,
I didn't say it was a warm walk. emoticon It was about 42-45 degrees and windy, but 10 ten minutes into it, I unzipped my two layers. (left the light hood on) Thankfully, there was much more mud than snow.

Sounds like a lovely walk, Sue! I'm hoping this awful wind dies down tomorrow, but the weather is saying snow. Gosh darn it!

Sue, that sound perfect. I've been sitting here thinking about going for a walk while the sun shines. I think you've inspired me :)

I got out for a hike with my son and dogs yesterday. We discovered a trail that had been recently blazed. It was beautiful. We clambered up and down the rocky ridges. Being a new trail there were no signs of civilization. Since we were 'lost' (meaning we had no idea where the trail went or ended) we could just enjoy the scenery and peace and quiet.

Yesterday got up to 77F. Woohoo!! I went for a half hour walk and while everything is still muddy and bare, I can see some early plants - jonquils mainly - starting poke through the ground. Unfortunately, while I was walking, our neighbor's bad brown dog got into the garage and stole an entire bag of dog food. So I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to pick it out of the driveway.

I went for a walk today! You have no idea how wonderful it was to be outside and not have my face or fingers freeze.

We (my husband, my dog and me) drove to the quaint town I love so much and strolled the sidewalks. (Because they were dry. There was a lot of melting today, and most streets and walk paths were just too puddle-y.)

The unmistakable sign of spring that I saw (aside from the puddles of snow melt) was a - gasp - bare patch of ground, littered with pine needles. The dog was fascinated by the smell of honest to goodness dirt.

In other news, I've tweaked the total number of March's goal walks up by 6, because two more folks have signed up for this goal and there's three weeks left in the month.

(I do wish you'd stop in and say hi.)

Tomorrow it's supposed to be 73F here. Yes, in the 70's. Today it barely topped 40, so I'm not 100 percent sure. But if it gets even close to that, will a walk count as my writerly winterly walk? Winter's almost at an end - or so I hope.

I have to dig out my "Winter is Coming" (Game of Thrones) t-shirt now to wear through the summer. Chuckle, chuckle...

Everyone - let's break the bank for Renae and get 30 walks in March!!

Hi guys! I see that there are six of us signed up for the Writerly Walks this month. I just adjusted the goal to match the participants. (6 walkers X 4 weekly walks = 24 walks in March.)

I will FINALLY be able to add to the total ... it's supposed to get up to 40-45 degrees this week, here in MN.

This is the first challenge I've developed for Writers, so I'm learning as I go. I assumed I'd be able to see who signed on, but all I can find is the number of participants. I know it's MADEIT3 and me, but who else is supposed to be getting outside this month?

I'd like to send out an EXTRA little challenge. When you go for your walks, look for a sign of spring ... no matter how tiny and share what you saw here in this thread. (Other than some puddling, I don't expect to see much, but I will be looking.)

I had so much hope for the first week of March but it is not to be. The second week of watch looks like we may be able to get some outdoor walking in. Meanwhile, I'm using the elliptical at the gym and the treadmill at home! Not meditative but not bad either...

A weekly, WINTERY, writerly, walk ... nice. Look at all that alliteration :)

When our winter gets a bit less severe, I'll walk much more frequently. Once a week will be almost guaranteed, and it's likely to be more often. They aren't the most efficient form of physical exercise for me - because I ramble and scramble (so I can tack photos) too much. They are SO good for my mind and heart though.

I hope you can get out soon.

Sounds wonderful!! I will try and go on a winterly walk as soon as we have a little less winter on the ground! At the moment, I would need my mud boots.

Until then, I'll stick to my treadmill. I've been watching "Call Me Madam" with Ethel Merman and Donald O'Connor while I walk. The show tunes give me a boost. But I do have one question. How did Ethel Merman get so young????

I don't know if anyone will pick up on the Writerly Walk Challenge (see Team Goals) but I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share all the cool (or strange, or--heck--even melancholy) things that one sees when out and about with no agenda other than to ... well ... walk and see things :D

Last summer, I did a fair bit of walking in a picturesque town very near my apartment. I prefer to walk there, because there's so much to see and enjoy.

It's a lakeside town, that was a resort area in the mid to late 19th century. (At one time, there was an amusement park, kind of like Coney Island, but that's long gone.) There are still some beautiful old homes, and the whole area has a genteel feel about it.

I haven't walked much since winter descended, because I hate feeling like the ground is trying kill me. (This Minnesota girl has taken too many nasty falls due to ice, snow ruts, and deceptively deep puddles.)

Today, after I picked up my 18 year old son from the college, I told him my plan to go for a walk downtown after I dropped him off at home. To my surprise, he said he'd like to come along.

He was marvelous company. I hadn't realized that the manners I taught him when he was little had taken root. He stayed on the curb side of the sidewalks. He opened doors for me when we stepped into a couple of shops. (Including the bakery, where he got a pop and a cookie, and where I didn't have any trouble saying no thanks.) He made good conversation.

Who knew that one of the best things I'd see on my walk today was my own son, in a different light.

We also saw:
a small, silky dog with bright eyes acting as the official greeter at a hair salon
a young woman with FOUR pre-schoolers, making a squatty snowman, so the kids could reach
a middle aged man driving a Brony car (my boy is a proud Brony)
and an old man walking with his old black lab who had no need of a leash.

(This town is definitely a dog-friendly place.)

It was a wonderful walk. You should take one too :D (Says the chick who started this challenge.)
