'Tis the season to participate in local Christmas Bird counts sponsored by National Audubon. I usually do three or four, but this year only two. I am preparing for another one on Sunday, 12/30. The count starts with a circle drawn on a map with a center point and a 15 mile radius. People gather on a certain day within a few weeks either side of Christmas, to count all of the birds in that circle. It frequently becomes a social event, when we gather in the evening to tally the birds for the day and enjoy dinner. There are counts all over the country. You may be able to look up local counts on the Nat. Audubon website, or contact your local Audubon chapter. They are always looking for volunteers, no matter what your skill level is.
