Just decided to review the first few days of Beck to give me a kick start again. This is day 3 of no sugar/no wheat for me. So far, so good, but I am extremely anxious about failing yet again and i really want to make it this time. So, I thought aside from elimination sugar and hoping that that helps with my binges and cravings, I will also add the Beck strategies back in. They have definitely helped me in the past. So, I thought I would brainstorm a new list of advantages of dieting WITHOUT looking at my old list. Her it goes:

1. I will feel comfortable with attention from my husband and admiration of others.
2. I will be able to wear my bikini without worrying that the whole world is staring at my belly (they can stare, but only if it's because I look HOT!!)
3. I will be free from the emotional ups and downs that come with gaining and losing the same weight over and over again.
4. I will go back to visit my family this summer feeling like I look healthy and fit.
5. I will stop feeling like a fraud - my actions will finally match my attitudes about eating and fitness.
6. I will be able to shop for clothes again - right now I can't even step into a dressing room without feeling depressed.
7. I can buy a pair of hot white jeans this summer without feeling like a whale in them.
8. I can prove that age doesn't have to mean frumpy and plain.
9. I can look in the mirror and be happy with the image staring back at me.
10. The outside me will finally match the inside me.
11. I want to eat like a "normal" person and have a "normal" relationship with food.
12. I want all my hard work with exercise not to go to waste.

Well, there it is I think I will print it out.

The following is taken from The Beck Diet Solution pg. 34 - sharing it here for anyone who might like to print it out for their bathroom mirror, fridge, etc.

I don't want to feel deprived ...
BUT I can modify my plan in advance to include my favorite foods. Besides, I'd rather tolerate some deprivation & be thinner than eat whatever I want-whenever I want-& be heavier.

I don't want to tolerate hunger & cravings ...
BUT there are a lot of things I can do to decrease my discomfort & if I don't learn now how to get myself to tolerate some discomfort, I won't be able to maintain the weight I lose.

I don't want to have to eat differently from other people ...
BUT that's the price I need to pay sometimes to get thinner & stay thinner.

I don't want to write down a plan for what I'm going to eat; I want to eat spontaneously ...
BUT I can't do that & expect to maintain weight loss in the long term.

I don't want to have to change my routine to make time & energy for dieting ...
BUT I have to face the fact that I won't be successful unless I do so.

I don't other people to be unhappy with me because of the changes I'm making ...
BUT I'm entitled to do what I need to do to lose weight, as long as I'm not maliciously doing something to make someone else feel bad.

*********

If you'd prefer this in a nicer more creative format, [a little larger print too!] you are more than welcome to send me your email & I'll be happy to send you a copy of mine!

:::wild applause::: 'cause it sounds like you're making the transition into more scheduling and less of my favorite sport, procrastination. Like your using that reminder on your desk to remember to read the cards! I don't think I'm about to turn into a human airport, one with every flight on time, anytime soon :) But knowing when an occasional plane needs to clear the runway would be a good start for me!

Think of what we can accomplish...!

yeah, i find that i don't like, don't want to do anything structured/scheduled/regimented... and have resisted that a lot in my lifetime...

which is funny, because scheduling anything is a tool to help us do small chunks and get it done in a good time frame.

it's the procrastinator in me, i suppose, and that is something i'm trying to work on and improve this year....

the last 2 years i have been thinking about this some....

it's kind of like doing dishes and laundry. if you don't, they pile up and cause more stress and chaos in our lives... but if we take care of them routinely, then we have clean kitchens, we can choose anything to use/wear, and it's easier to manage than a humongo mound....

i think part of changing our thinking doesn't happen in 1 decision to change. Snap! it happens...

Not! I think it's in the doing each and every day tha tthe new better thoughts beging to replace the old thoughts and being to be the 1st thing we think instead of the last

and that takes practice... every day...

so, i'm willing to schedule reminder times.

I have a reminder on my desk to read the cards after breakfast and dinner ~ i'm usually plugged into the puter after both of those meals.

Jules, it's such a sobering, sometimes quite painful process to examine our reasons, and yet pleasant or uncomfortable, they can become such a powerful, driving force toward winning at losing. And yet we have so much positive to gain! This is an initial, difficult step toward ultimate success, that groundwork of self-examination.

When Dr. B. suggested making out a schedule, I balked. Still haven't done it! Yet structure is exactly what I need. The only thing really structured about my weekdays is exercise time. The rest of it's too open for trouble...

Not easy at all!

whew.

ok, that took some thinking and feeling a little emotional about it to boot!

yes! I find myself having sabotaging throughts about whether or not this will work. whether or not it is worth making the list and cards.

i have thoughts like... why bother? i know the reasons, they are the same reasons i've thought to myself, over & over, ad nauseum.

what the heck will make it different this time???

emoticon Hello!!!

:::smackin4head::: i can choose to try new things to see if it willhelp... or i can choose not to try anything and continue struggling to change.

I choose change. I choose me.

emoticon Reasons I'd Like to quit Bingeing

~ so I can quit hurting myself with food. I'm wearing too much of it, and it makes things hard physically, emotionally and socially.

~ so i won't feel ashamed of the things i do

~ so i can get through stress and life in positive ways that help me instead of hurt me.

~ so i can quit regaining all the weight i keep trying to lose plus more.

emoticon Reasons I'd like to Lose Weight

~ to improve my health. I'm in danger of dying young from diabetes and heart disease and all the horrible complications that go with it (aka syndrome X)

~ to ride the roller coaster I couldn't because I was too fat

~ to wear my wedding rings again

~ to be able to run in the waves with my furbabies, barefoot, wind blowing in my hair

Glory,

I will try to explain my perspective on the purpose of the response cards.

The idea is that you write down your reasons to lose weight, as well as any other valuable responses to sabotaging thoughts, and that you read these cards at peak times during your day, whether you are alone or in public. The theory is, that our sabotaging thoughts can be so persuasive that we sometimes forget why dieting is so imortant to us, especially when faced with tempting food. we will often have "thoughts' that lead to overeating. Quoting from Back, p 27 "Sabotaging thoughts encourage you to eat. You'll probably notice that you have a number of "permission-giving" thoughts that allow you to rationalize what you eat. These thoughts often start with the phrase "I know I shouldn't eat this, but it's OK because ....." They end with any number of excuses, such as "I had a hard day...this is a celebration...it will just go to waster...I really want it...It won't matter". And so on, and so on, and so on." end quote.

So the response cards, when read daily (sometimes several times a day), your reasons for losing weight, and your positive responses to sabotaging thoughts will become so ingrained that they will essentially become your "new" way of thinking (hence the "train your brain to think like a thin person"). The idea is that if you tell yourself the right things often enough, you begin to live them. They become a part of you.

I think for most of us "sabotaging our selves" is a way of life, almost a habit. This book is about retraining yourself into a NEW habit, a more positive habit that when practised routinely will help us all the be healthier, happier and THINNER!!

PART 3: FOR THOSE OF US WHO STRUGGLE WITH BINGEING & EMOTIONAL EATING... why don't we also do the same thing for that (list our reasons and create advantages cards for the reasons we want to learn to live Binge Free and/or end Emotional Eating and/or Over-eating).

That's a great idea .. we could share them here and come up with a lovely compiled list .. well back to the drawing board

This thing about 'Advantage Cards' .. I'm wondering what the special thing about 'cards' is .. it seems to me that they are loose can get scattered and who really looks through cards .. I understand it's to take with you .. okay, so I'll put these in the cutsie little 3'5 card notebook to take with me .. so then is the idea I look at these any time I'm tempted to binge while in public? I don't binge in public .. just in private .. so I'm a little confused as to the use of these.... would someone be willing to clarify?

It's pretty late, my brain is fried so maybe I need to re-read my assignment to get the answer .. I just enjoy staying up and talking to myself .. emoticon

1) Please share any of your thoughts or concerns here.

I'm so happy .. all supplies are purchased!
Notebook & ntbk. paper, sticky 'lined 'even' notes, even this really cool white out dh bought me, Walmart has 3'5 note cards with holes punched across the top which fit into a cutsie little spiral ntbk. that my 12 yr. old put me onto! I feel like a school girl again getting ready for my 1st day of school.

2) Optional: please share any of your reasons for losing weight or for learning to live without bingeing, emotional eating or over-eating that you feel comfortable sharing here with the group.
Dh says if I would just quit late night bingeing behavior I would be at a healthy weight no problem.. my girls say they don't understand why I struggle with my weight because they say I don't eat that much during the day ..
My biggest struggle is going to be to talk myself out of not caving into binges when I'm used to eating for the mere reason of comforting myself .. whether it be for pain or emotional reasons .. I guess that's when I'm supposed to read these cards??

3) emoticon Truth! Did you find yourself resisting the information and/or doing any of the activities with Sabotaging thoughts? Please share that here too :) I'm not sure what they are asking here .. I am here on the Beckfast of Champions because I want to be here and follow the program to the letter .. she says if we miss steps it won't work, so I have no sabtoging feelings unless I'm missing out on what the question is asking

.. really looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts & an ongoing discussion of what we've accomplished through the first 40 pgs. of the workbook .. will enjoy hearing fresh ideas that perhaps I can add to my own repitoire should permission be granted.

It will be great fun to learn and grow together as we strive to become Champions in our quest to Live Binge Free!!!!

My computer had problems so we had to transfer all the info. off of it onto another laptop which is very new to me and I keep hitting a few wrong keys .. I will settle into it soon I'm sure..

I have the following listed on my Spark Page & set up daily email appts. to have each:
WHAT IS MOTIVATING ME TO LOSE WEIGHT TODAY? &
Helpful Responses to Dieting Disadvantages:
sent out to me so that they can be right out in front of me daily.

I liked Jules idea of copying off the 'Helpful Responses to Dieting Disadvantages' onto a few colored copies.

I love the graphics idea you came up with Allison, wish you could somehow find a way to show them to us!

LIFE is a great big canvas, you should throw all the paint on it you can! The thoughts we choose to think are the tools we use to paint the canvas of our lives.

Team motto for BL is "Clean Slate in 2008"

*******

WHAT IS MOTIVATING ME TO LOSE WEIGHT TODAY?
THE INTRINSIC WAY WHICH WILL HELP IN KEEPING IT OFF!!!

- First & Foremost - I'll better be able to serve the Lord!!!
I'll feel as if I've accomplished something important in the Lord, which will increase my faith, which, in turn, is pleasing to Him!

- I'll be more confident, healthy, & stay on the right track for fitness, & long life.

- I'll have more energy, be more physically fit, to play w brother, children, grandchildren, hike, bike garden, power walk

- I'll do more things, like go to the beach/Exotic vacation

- I really want to be able to wear really cute stylish clothes again!

- To go on an exotic 2 night vacation after reaching goal weight & then thereafter each yr.!

- To be a positive example to my children!

- I'll feel more in control
- I'll have more confidence
- I'll be able to be more assertive
- I'll feel more outgoing
- I'll be less self-critical
- I'll be happier when I look in the mirror
- I'll look better
-- I'll like myself more
- I'll be in better health
- I'll increase my self-esteem
- I'll live longer
- I'll be able to exercise without discomfort or embarrassment
- I'll feel better physically
- I'll enjoy romance more
- I'll get joy out of shopping for clothes
- I'll be more attractive to others
- I'll get more compliments
- I won't feel so self-conscious
- I'll be able to wear a smaller size

the above is just a rough draft which I will continue working on through time ..

*************

Helpful Responses to Dieting Disadvantages:

1.) DO IT ANYWAY
Even if I don't feel like using a diet skill, I have to do it anyway. If I do only what I feel like doing, I won't be able to lose weight & keep it off.

2.) GIVE MYSELF CREDIT
I deserve credit EVERY TIME I exercise. I deserve credit EVERY TIME I practice a dieting skill. I deserve credit EVERY TIME I stick to my plan.

3.) EAT MINDFULLY
I need to eat slowly & mindfully while sitting down-EVERY SINGLE TIME.

4.) IT'S OK TO DISAPPOINT PEOPLE
I'm entitled to do what I have to do to lose weight, as long as I'm nicely assertive.

5.) SAY NO TO EXTRA FOOD
Get rid of extra food. It'll be wasted in the trash can or in my body. Either way, it's wasted.

6.) PUT DIETING FIRST
I have to plan my life around exercise & dieting activities, not vice versa. I deserve to put myself first.

7.) EXERCISE NO MATTER WHAT
If I don't feel like exercising, remember: 5 min. is better than 0 min. SAY NO CHOICE. The hardest part is getting started; then it gets easier.

8.) TOLERATE IT!
Hunger & cravings aren't emergencies. I can tolerate them. There's mild compared to ________
I'm going to eat again in ________ hrs, anyway.

9.) DISTRACTION TECHNIQUES
When I want to eat something I shouldn't, do these things instead: ______________________

10.) IF I'M HUNGRY AFTER A MEAL
Don't worry! It may take 20 min. to feel full.

11.) NO EXCUSES
Just because I want to eat, doesn't mean I should.

12.) RESISTANCE HABIT
EVERY TIME I eat something I'm not supposed to, I strengthen my giving-in habit. EVERY TIME I don't give in, I strengthen my resistance habit.

13.) CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS
I can be lose w/ my eating
OR
I can be thinner.
I can't be both.

14.) IT'S NOT OK
It's NOT OK to eat this.
Im going to be very sorry if I do.

15.) I'll CARE LATER
I may not care right now, but I will care a LOT
when I get on the scale.

16.) I'D RATHER BE THINNER
Being thinner is SO much more important
to me than eating this food.

17.) NO CHOICE
NO CHOICE
NO CHOICE

18.) GET BACK ON TRACK
If I eat something I shouldn't have, I haven't blown it.
It's not the end of the world. It's just a mistake. Get back on track this minute! Don't keep on eating! That makes no sense. It's a million times better to stop now than to allow myself to eat more.

19.) CELEBRATE!
I should celebrate each 1/2 pd. loss!

20.) OH, WELL
I don't like this, but I'm going to accept it & move on.

21.) ADVICE TO A FRIEND
If my best friend were discouraged, disappointed, or dismayed, wht would I tell him/her?

22.) BE REALISTIC
I shouldn't expect to lose weight every single week.

23.) DON'T COMFORT MYSELF W/ FOOD
If I'm upset, don't eat to seek comfort! It won't solve the problem, & I'll just feel worse.

24.) ENRICH MY LIFE TODAY
I need to work toward developing a rich & rewarding life--right now.

OK, i wrote down my reasons and finished todays activities. I did kind of want to not do them, but i know to make this work i need to follow the steps. I've handwritten them about 4 times. lol. I'm too lazy to try to print them out on my printer.

My main reasons for losing weight are:
Boost self confidence
Feel better physically & mentally
Be healthier

I want to be able to go out and not worry about wha i look like. Even if i'm not a size 5, i want to feel good about me. I also want to be a good role model for my daughter. I'm not going to make her go on wacky diets! I want her to eat healthy and learn from example.

:sigh: If only we could be like the Gilmore Girls and eat pizza, ice cream, burgers, & fries every night and be perfectly skinny!! oohh to be movie stars! lol

Just found my way over here!

Alison - Good going when you went out to dinner to celebrate your little boy's birthday! I'm the same way: One bite of something decadent and I'm off to the races! I admire your singlemindedness and determination!

The card I made included:

1) So I can live longer;
2) So I'll have more energy and less fatigue;
3) To lower my triglycerides and LDL;
4) To decrease my hip/back pain;
5) To lessen my chances of getting a serious
disease;
6) So that my husband won't worry about me;
7) To make walking easier;
8) To encourage my brother;
9) To get to my Spark goal;
10) So I'll have more confidence;
11) To improve my appearance;
12) For a sense of accomplishment;
13) So I can wear nicer clothes.

Alison, I know what you mean. It's hard to remember to read the card, let alone read it carefully. I love that you put neat graphics on yours! I have my Beck book and workbook close to the kitchen, so that card's always close by, but I should make copies of it, too.

Hey everyone!!! I hope everyone is still feeling enthusiastic about the Journey we are embarking on together. I hope the lack of posts simply means that people are out having a fun friday night!!! Me? I am at home fighting the urge to binge. Went out for dinner for my son's birthday. At a salad. was feeling good about not ordering the fries, and then of course, the birthday cake came out. One bite of something decadent and I'm ready to fall off the wagon. when we got hoem from the restaurant I wanted to keep eating, but here I am posting here instead. Focusing my energy on DAY 1 of Beck will hopefully get me back in focus.

The big focus of day 1 is writing out your list of reasons to lose weight. I am continually rewriting min, though some things remain the same. here is a sampling of my list:

1. I will fit into my size 4 clothes (without lumps and bumps)
2. NO MORE MUFFIN TOP.
3. I will feel more attractive
4. I'll be more confident
5. I'l be happy with my reflection in the mirror.
6. I'll set a good example of healthy nutritious eating for my children.
7. I can stop obsessing about the number on the scale.
8. I'll feel more in control of my eating.
9. I can wear a bikini on my holiday this summer.
10. I can shop for new clothes without being depressed.
11. To feel a sense of accomplishment.
12. To know that I CAN do it, that real change IS possible.
13. I can stop being jealous of my thinner friends.
14.I want to look and feel better at 40 than I did at 30.
14. To be a YUMMY MUMMY! Hooray!!

I wrote my list up on my computer and printed it onto 3 x 5 inch cards with some fun graphics and printed on the back some of the sabotaging thoughts and quick responses for me to refer to when I have some of these thoughts. these cam directly from the workbook, and I find them quite helpful.

I am still trying to think of ways to remind myself to read them. Especially when I start to feel the urge to binge. I almost become defiant and "refuse" to read them, when in fact reading them may help give me a distraction. I feel so much like a rebellious teenager sometimes!!!

emoticon This is Day 1 in a 42-day series of consecutive one-day challenges that build on the prior challenges. We will do 1 a day Monday through Saturday. Sundays are a day off and the program lasts 7 weeks. All daily threads and companion threads will be in this section (forum) of the team page. You can start any time, but consider starting with Day 1 and work your way through them before doing today's challenge :)

Before you start day 1, consider doing Bookclub: "Beck 1st Intro Chat ~ Keys2success 1/9/08" found in the general forum at this link:

emoticon AUTHOR QUOTE: It takes time to let new ideas sink in and to become proficient at changing your ideas and behavior. What if you've already lost weight (inserts: or are already losing weight or have other major goals like not bingeing)? You still need to prepare. Start with Day 1 and progress from there. Practicing the skills in this program is crucial to maintaining weight loss (inserts: or reach your major goals). It's insurance that all your hard work will pay off for a lifetime!

emoticon WHAT TO READ AND DO FOR THIS DISCUSSION

BOOK: read pages 53 through 62
WORKBOOK: read pages 38 through 40

FOR PERSONAL USE: Read the materials and do all the activities.

emoticon ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTION: workbook pg 39, very first activity listed: instead of cutting out page 33, consider taking it to the photocopy store and making several copies to use.

emoticon PART 3: FOR THOSE OF US WHO STRUGGLE WITH BINGEING & EMOTIONAL EATING... why don't we also do the same thing for that (list our reasons and create advantages cards for the reasons we want to learn to live Binge Free and/or end Emotional Eating and/or Over-eating).

emoticon TODAY'S MINI-CHALLENGE FOR DISCUSSION HERE:

1) Please share any of your thoughts or concerns here.

2) Optional: please share any of your reasons for losing weight or for learning to live without bingeing, emotional eating or over-eating that you feel comfortable sharing here with the group.

3) emoticon Truth! Did you find yourself resisting the information and/or doing any of the activities with Sabotaging thoughts? Please share that here too :)

emoticon FOOD4THOUGHT: After all, why are we here? Isn't this really all about creating an appropriate way to eat and exercise that will nourish our bodies and feed our souls without hurting us with food ~ either too much or too little?

Creating an appropriate way to eat and exercise will help us be healthy and fit and manage our weight, whether that is to lose weight, gain or maintain our weight. Perhaps then, learning how to lose weight (aka eat fewer calories than we burn) is just part of learning how to manage our weight successfully for the rest of our lives, eh?
