Sassy, I was thinking of your lentil disaster when I made split pea soup a few days ago. Gave me a big smile!!

Turkey Vegetable Soup sounds great MSGLOW.

I wanted to make Seafood Chowder for Christmas Eve but just couldn't get the lobster. Roads too icy to deal with it so guess it's the old stand by Clam Chowder. It's what I wanted anyway. Others wanted the seafood but weren't willing to drive for the ingredients. I smiled to myself and thought, "You get what you pay for!!" A Scrooge-like attitude!!

Silly you, indeed. You put it in your Bother Boots instead of the extra pair of socks!!

A big juicy navel orange. On sale for 49 cents a pound so I loaded up for stuffing the toes of stocking and stuffing Linda's face!! And zesting because I'm making cranberry orange breads and a new recipe for orange cookies with walnuts and cranberries tonight. Have to have my trays of cookies for the church ladies tomorrow. Why do church ladies make me cuss??

Yum, toasted walnuts. I've been hunting for my recipe for spiced salted walnuts. Just can't find it. I know the final step is to sprinkle lightly with sea salt but I can't remember the proportions for the rest......

Silly me. Where could I have put it?

Kraut and pepperoni pizza from Howard's as I was driving thru town!! Got a medium and ate 1/4 of it. Will make 4 meals. I used to like to get 3 kinds and eat almost all 3.

Car smelled so good, not from the pizza but from the wreaths I had been carrying around for 27 hours. Dropped the last one off at my Uncle Harold's grave in the tiny Fort Benton cemetery...it was well after dark but I knew where I was going. I would never have thought Christmas wreaths would smell better to me than pizza!

My food of the moment is 15 bean soup. Cook beans according to package directions. Add salsa to taste. I used almost 2 cups. Brown some turkey polish sausage and add to the mix. It's so good, warm and cozy, has lots of fiber and few calories!

Dill pickle spears!! (hope I didn't already say that one!)

I once went to a wedding with my grandma- I was so hungry! There was only trays of celery sticks etc. Grandma said eat the carrots they are good for you! She regreted that- I ate them till they came back up!

Dinner was always on time at both my grandmas. But Linda I cook like your grandma! I'm always late! LOL! Well except when I cook ahead! emoticon

Dinner at my gramma's house was ALWAYS HOURS LATE!! So we used to raid the relish trays...played a game of putting the black olives on our fingers and then eating them. She hated it that we played with our food. She mentioned it years later and I said, well, you should have served dinner on time. It as pure torture to be so hungry for so long. Black olives and celery sticks saved us from fainting!!

I love Brussels sprouts too. That's why I've never had green bean casserole...well, the number one reason...we always had Brussels sprouts for our holiday green vegetable. Did you check out the recipe in my Thanksgivukkah blog...instead of bacon using pastrami!! And Chef Alex from food network had an incredible Caesar salad recipe where she toasts the outer leaves of Brussels sprouts and used them for crunch instead of croutons...it's AMAZING!! Yeah, mustard is so good on them.

Someone posted somewhere a couple months ago about the store being out of them...my store was too. And there must have been 50 comments about "Who CARES!!" I thought it was hysterical. Probably people who had the overcooked bitter nasty ones and never got over it!

Hold onto your hats, ladies. I love Brussels sprouts. I love them in chicken broth instead of noodles. I love them roasted with mustard, maple syrup, and olive oil. And who doesn't love them fried in bacon? But I love sprouts so much, I'll eat them boiled and plain. Maybe sprinkled with turmeric.

I love rutabagas. I always add them to beef stew (turnips too!). I like to roast root vegetables. Peel and dice up carrots, parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, sweet or any kind of potato. The smaller the dice the faster they will roast. Use any, all or some of these-put them in a bowl and drizzle a little oil over them, add some salt and pepper and I use thyme mostly but sometimes Italian seasoning...depending on if I'm serving them with something else. Then roast at 425 for about 15 minutes and add in onions that have been cut into wedges and then in half and roast another 10 or 15 minutes. Onions in the beginning will burn so they need to go in about half way...sometimes I use squash cubes, zucchini, mushrooms. This is one of my favorite ways to do veggies in the winter time. If I'm doing Italian I use zukes, mushrooms, onions and cherry tomatoes and add in fresh garlic about half way through...this mix doesn't cook nearly as long. Rutagabas are also good just peeled and boiled like potatoes with butter and salt and pepper. I hope you'll give them a try and I hope you enjoy them. They have a mild flavor and you can mix them in with boiled turnips and have a mash of the root vegetables too. That's interesting although it doesn't look too appetizing to me!!

Jackie, That's so funny because I was just working on a menu for a Halloween party I am going to cater and I will make a split pea soup....and call it slime soup...it's the color that's so creepy anyway...and also a beef stew and it's perfectly normal beef stew like I mentioned in the previous post except I'll add in these floating eyeballs. Saw the cutest little ghost pizzas which are basically a white pizza with 2 ripe olive slices as eyes and you pull the dough into a ghost shape and bake it with olive oil and garlic for a few minutes then add ricotta and Italian seasoning and parm and then top with the motz and the "eyes". They were featured on the porn channel....Food Network because it really is porn for fat people. I think they will be darling. That will probably be my only "new" thing. I have a ton of standard Halloween buffet foods after all these years so now it's just a matter of picking out what I want to do within the budget I've been given. Fortunately this guy doesn't really care how much I spend so it's always fun to cater his events. If you pull strings from string cheese and add it to the split pea soup it looks really gross without affecting the wonderful taste.

I absolutely love parsnips. This is the 2nd year they didn't grow beyond little finger size in my garden. I got 5 lbs. of small and medium-sized ones in GTF at the good grocery! I peeled, sliced, par-boiled and finished low and slow in butter-so they had that rich browned butter sauce last night for dinner. Had a small piece of fried ham from a "new" at least to me, local meat packing place. It was excellent...just the right amount of smoke-also from 2-J's but I saved the label so I can take it to my local IGA and see if John will get in some of their products. And squash...some butternut and some I don't know what kind.

We have always eaten our beef stew with turnips, rutabagas, carrots, celery, onions and potatoes. In the last few years I have left out the potatoes and put in parsnips and mushrooms and added a can of tomatoes I put through the blender first. I don't like chunks of tomato but like the richness they give the broth. I had some frozen cherry tomatoes I used last batch instead of the canned. And I put frozen peas in the bottom of the bowl and ladle the steaming stew over it so the peas taste fresh and retain their lovely color and texture. I love beef stew!!

Linda - the sausage sounds really good. I'll be over for dinner. emoticon

Sorry about taking so long to respond. I've had my mind elsewhere, I suppose. And Greek yogurt. Yum. Although I love it, it doesn't love me back sad to say.

I made a beef "stew" with parsnips, carrots, and mushrooms. DH thought the parsnips were potatoes and was so excited about them that I didn't have the heart to tell him different.

Took you too long to answer, Stacy! Sassy knew and put in a little link so we could see for ourselves. Sounds interesting. I'm not a huge fan of peanut butter to begin with. I am trying to use the nut butters more-have some good almond butter open right now. emoticon

Shakesalot-Okra is the only vegetable I don't like. Tell me how you cook it to make it fit for human consumption!?? It's the texture I just can't deal with.

Dill pickles sound so good. I love really crisp ones!

I'm making surprise meatballs today. Using some great Italian sausage as a base and a cube of mozzarella cheese inside. I could eat the whole pan!

Hey Miranda and Linda - PB2 is powdered peanut butter. It started showing up in The Plan recipes and also in some of the raw and Paleo recipe sites I visit. It has less fat than PB and adds taste. I wouldn't mix it with water and spread it on celery though.

What is PB2?? I've got chicken thighs simmering in stock with onions and carrots and celery .
and rib bones for the dogs simmering in beef stock with onions and celery and garlic. Chicken thighs will become chicken enchiladas and chicken walnut salad and some nice mulligatawny soup (basically curried chicken rice with apples and some other veggies) and the beef stock will be the basis for French onion soup and for steak soup for my mom to take to a dinner...basically a hamburger gravy thing with carrots, celery, peppers, mushrooms and potatoes. The house smells incredible.

Cubed butternut squash and tossed it in with some olive oil, salt&pepper and thyme and threw it in to roast while the stuffed peppers finished baking. Made a wonderful, colorful plate of warm, satisfying grub on a chilly rainy night in Montana!!

I don't care much for cheese. I add caraway seeds in and toast them a little in the butter before I throw in the cabbage. Mom and I eat sauteed cabbage a lot...plus corned beef and cabbage. We like New England boiled dinners with all the root vegetables, parsnips and turnips and rutabagas and carrots. She was just telling me the other day I needed to whip up a batch. I got so all I was doing was roasting them...I love the caramelized flavor of the roasted. Check out my recipe for crack slaw. It's like Chinese food without the rice. And I am addicted.

Well tomato sauce gives me heart burn :o(
But it sounds good.
I made this one up- sauté cabbage in butter till it browns in the butter, add cooked hamburger, onions and mozzarella cheese- stir lots and lots in. My kids eat this faster than I can make it! :o)
I think next time I'm in a hurry I'll bake it the way your friend did, probably putting the cheese in the middle.
But browned cabbage in butter- yum!
I have no time to make cabbage rolls!! :o)

I had a great, easy cabbage dish last week, like cabbage rolls without the rolls. She took a 9x13 pan and dumped in a package of shredded cabbage. Said sometimes she uses the bag of plain, sometimes the one with carrots and red cabbage and sometimes just shreds a head. Brown 2 lbs of burger with a find chopped onion and a diced green pepper. Dump over the cabbage and spread it out. Dump another package of cabbage on top of that. Take a couple cans of tomato sauce and add a Tbsp of vinegar and mix them up. Pour that over the whole mess and cover with foil. Bake at 350 for about 45 minutes. She said she used to mix cooked rice in with the burger/onion stuff but since she's on low carbs leaves out the rice and likes it just as well. She said the recipe she adapted called for campbell's tomato soup but she thought that was too sweet and had too many unpronouncable ingredients. Try it and let me know what you think...leave out green peppers if you don't like them.

I was going to take my Mom out to eat today. Somehow it turned into a family event. Well, my brother couldn't make it. He has a colonoscopy tomorrow, poor guy. I did that in August. No fun. I looked up there menu and I am going to have filet mignon 8 oz(cut in half) salad, and baked potato. I am making no apologies to no one, I will order it as rare as they are willing to cook it. I don't cook steak for myself, so this is a very rare treat. Linda go us!!!!

That's how our shrimp came...blocks of ice. Our lobster was always individually frozen though. I had thought of that for years...now that they have IQF-stands for Individually Quick Frozen...our lobster (for the restaurant) used to come from Austrailia!!

I'm having bacon and eggs for breakfast today. I absolutely love the smell of bacon frying.

My Grandma owned a corner grocery store. She ordered shrimp and Lobster in blocks of ice delivered from the Eat Coast- YUM! We used to thaw them in cold water in the laundry tubs! And she knew who sold the best steaks! She could buy the steaks restaurants served! She was an excellent cook and all beef and lamb served was a lovely perfect rare! I make a Prime Rib like her that is to die for! LOL!

She made delicious desserts too with fruit. Her customers asked her why hers tasted so much better- she never threw out the bruised or old fruit that they would not buy!!! She made desserts with it- YUM!

Oh the memories!

Thanks for the invite, Jackie...I live in a state that raises lots of cows and sheep too! My dad owned a steak house restaurant when I was growing up and I've loved rare beef my whole life.
I love all vegetables too, except for okra, I eat them all. My one item for today is

SCALLOPS! I bought scallops for the seafood lasagna but bought a pound just for me. I sauteed them in butter with lemon juice, lemon zest and tarragon and cracked black pepper. They were just delicious. I like scallops better than lobster and shrimp and crab. Probably my favorite of all seafood! It was a great treat for a rainy Saturday night!

Linda, you need to come to NZ! You'd never be judged for eating red meat here - all those sheep and cows everywhere - red meat is considered a staple part of a healthy diet (for those who eat it) and primary source of iron. Your steak sounded lovely :)

I had a big hunk of rare rib steak coated with lots of cracked black pepper and smothered with garlic and mushrooms. It's the best part of my day. I need to learn to eat it unapologeticly. I'm on low carb and it fits into my plan...but eating red meat seems to be looked down on almost as much as smoking cigarettes. So I love my rare beef and I'm proud!!

I meant to buy squash today but forgot. Jaimie Oliver cooked it on a show this week. Never had it ever. Next week. Today I am cooking a chicken stew using up left over veg. I love dumplings but will give them a miss.

May be it isn't too healthy, but for breakfast I eat a type of melba toast with jam, but on one I put Nutella. It's kind of my treat for the day.

Beautiful yellow, juicy Bartlett pears! Even better tonight because they were a gift from a friend who is visiting/work related, from Chicago. He brought lots of my favorite Chicago treats...including 5 lbs. of thin-slice Italian Beef. It's frozen!

It doesn't even have to be peanut butter, just eating some peanuts or other nuts is suppose to help the gall stones. I don't know if it's due to their healthy oils or what, it didn't really say why it was suppose to help. Also olive oil, vinegar, citrus fruit and juice is suppose to help. So some times I eat just a little peanut butter, and other times I eat a little of healthy trail mix with nuts in it, or eat some mixed nuts. For the citrus fruit I will usually eat some cuties off and on. Less often I will eat an orange, as oranges, limes and lemons can have a little too much acid for me. I know it is a fine balancing act trying to keep the bad oils down, good ones up, the sugar and salt added to processed food down and etc. Luckily my gallstones where found because of just a routine blood work up, not from pain symptoms. I was having indigestion and heartburn off and on but never thought much about it until the test results. I just thought it was from foods with acid or spice, not that something was wrong with me. But even that has gone away with diet change and exercise.

I like peanut butter but don't eat it very often because of high.fat content, I went to buy some from health store, thinking it wold be healthier but the kind they stocked was full of sugar. Thanks for recommendation. Peanut butter really satisfyis and a little goes a long way.

Yum! ~Peppered smoked mackerel!

I recently found Whole Foods organic crunchy peanut butter. I actually quite like it. I've spent my whole life reeling from the taste, but this one actually does taste a bit like peanuts, it doesn't have as much added oil as the others I've seen, but it's pricey.

I've just had half a pink grapefruit. I eat them in secret because my DH loves them - but can't eat them as he is on meds for his high cholesterol.

I have gall stones too. I control them by not eating after 6, as most of my attacks came on at night..I have heard that raspberries are very bad for them. However I digress the food I love the best is smoked mackerel, preferably peppered. The taste is rich and it's full of omega 3.

I have been reading that some people add a little peanut butter to their oatmeal, but until I joined SP I had never heard it before. I almost always have oatmeal for breakfast. And some times I just have a teaspoonful or so of peanut butter just by itself at lunch time. I started eating peanut butter again off and on as part of my lunch as I also read that it is helpful for treatment of gall stones for some reason, and I was diagnosed with them over a year ago. So today I was having a late breakfast and decided to do the lunch peanut butter at the same time. And decided to try adding it to the oatmeal. I was okay, but I think I like them better separate.

I had some watermelon from my garden. This is the first time I have grown watermelon. An acquaintance gave me a couple of plants in the spring. It has been fun watching them grow. I picked the watermelon and pulled the vines up last week.

An orange - my favourite food of the moment. Not the small ones, but at large thick-skinned fruit of juicy loveliness!

So, are we all eating healthy food?

Let's share one item of food THAT WE HAVE EATEN TODAY

It might inspire someone to try something new.
