Walked up to the hockey rink early afternoon. Main street runs up a fairly steep hill. The wind was blowing pretty hard near the top...against the wind...one of my favorite Bob Segar songs.
Lots more houses decking out for Halloween. Lots of ghosts in trees and witches on brooms crashed into trees and telephone poles.Walking past a local coffee place, sure smelled good. I refuse to buy designer coffee. Never been in the place...but it sure smelled good. Then past a popular local drive-inn restaurant. Lots of cars in line waiting for food. I was surprised because it was after 1:00? Then past a big church and the parking lot is very large but was empty except for 2 cars.

Other side of the street on the way down the hill. 2 smaller churches with empty parking lots. A large chain-link fenced yard with 4 border collies running and playing. They didn't even look at me. A yard with a whole Halloween graveyard set up and plastic jack-o-lanterns lining the sidewalk up to the front door. Lots of that spider web stuff in all their trees. All the windows in the front are covered with that plastic stuff that has faces and eyes that shine through when it's dark outside and lights are on inside. In the daylight it just looks strange. This house really puts on the dog for Christmas too. Got in 6120 steps, changed into my sweat pants and went to have acupuncture on my knee.

Rode my bike to the pool at 7 and swam and water walked until 8:30. Was colder than I thought it would be riding home! Was glad I had taken the bike instead of walking.

Today I had to do another mall walk - back at the office - and went looking for more of those little custard cups with silicone lids. And I found exactly the number I needed to make an even 8. Yay!! I'm not sure that qualified as "walking" since I was really "shopping" but I did do 5,000 steps at lunch.

Then someone came up to me and said "hi" and - Linda I'm relating with you - I couldn't see who it was until she was in my face!! It was my "replacement" from work looking for a slip of all things for a Halloween costume. I also need to be wearing my glasses.

Have a good night (or day) all!!

Today I noticed how many of the trees are almost bare and how the lilacs all along the route are still hanging onto their leaves. I saw (and heard) the street sweeper weaving in and out of the parked cars sucking up leaves. I saw the flower baskets on a porch of a little house that used to be such a shack and has undergone such an incredible transformation to a house that looks like it belongs in Mayberry, RFD...dawns on me, FINALLY, DUH, LINDA...the plants and flowers are silk?????????? I must start wearing my glasses when I walk.

I heard some house wrens fighting and scrapping over seeds at a birdfeeder while a fat tabby cat sat looking on. Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets eaten by the cat!! Saw lots of people going into the battery store-automotive battery store. Must be getting the vehicles winterized. We all know it's coming but hard to believe that on a day as lovely as today!

Yesterday I did a mall walk and saw:

Starbucks
Cute custard cups with silicone lids - they looked so handy I bought a couple
Christmas ornaments like EVERYWHERE

Smelled:

Coffee
Popcorn grease (ugh)
Nail polish remover

I'm hoping to walk in my basement today and maybe a short walk outside.

Saw leaves dancing in the wind in the street, grouchy man with the Schnauzers, little boy running and screaming after his mother who wouldn't "wait up" for him.

Heard the helicopter for mercy flight and said a quick prayer, heard lots of dogs barking all at once and the locomotive horns as trains left town.

I'm posting my Arboretum walk - well, stroll really since my friend is not young - on my Blog later today. Lovely combination between forest and botanical gardens. The statue walk - very controversial in Johnson County KS due to a nude statue - doesn't make a lot of sense, but oh well!!

I saw 2 raccoon dead on the highway, side by side when I was driving the 35 miles to physical therapy. I don't think I've seen a live raccoon in years! Now 2 dead ones??

I've never see 'the Biggest Loser' Don't watch very much TV except for Jeopardy!

Today I saw a man loading furniture into the back of a pick-up. A man raking leaves. A woman on a ladder cleaning leaves out of the gutter.

I heard the scratch of a rake, the squeal of brakes on a big truck and loud chattering of sparrows scrounging for something to eat in the grass.

Walked 2 1/2 miles on my treadmill this morning and watched the premiere of The Biggest Loser. I don't think I've ever seen a more improbable show - it's amazing that they don't hurt the contestants.

The weather here is beautiful. Trees are just beginning to show their fall colors along the top of the mountain. The sky is brilliant blue with big fluffy white clouds. While crossing the bridge I noticed a raccoon washing his supper in the stream. I redirected the dog while my husband hurried him along his way Honestly raccoons are a pest and terribly over populated here but I will spare you my "critter" rant. emoticon I heard the tractor mowing hay, geese honking as they flew over in perfect formation and a lone bull frog braving these cooler nights.

Today is a great day to start the best week of your life! Enjoy! emoticon

saw and heard the rain and birds in the trees, and my dogs. My oldest dog doesn't like to go out in the rain, or even in between breaks in the rain if the ground is wet. So just did several short walks with the dogs, and did most of my walking and exercise in doors today.

More details on the blog

Heard:

Chinook flying over - broke the silence during my walk to the lake but not worth a mention in the missive
Birdsong. Robins calling in various parts - not just where I photographed one.
Canada Geese calling out to mark their homecoming.

Saw:

Waterfowl
Sunshine
Water
Leaves
Nature

A time of real contentment and feeling in tune with the surroundings. A very special day.

Only saw two walkers today and that is really unusual.

Had some cold coffee left over from last night so headed off in a new direction this morning towards the high school.

Saw kids of all ages waiting for their school buses. My they are noisy!!
Saw a man decorating his yard with dried corn stalks and ghosts hanging from tree branches.
Saw two small dogs chasing each other around and roughing each other up inside their chain link fence. They took no notice of me at all.

Heard a big truck grinding gears to get up the hill towards the hockey rink. I wonder what they are hauling in all those side dump trucks out to "the park"?
Heard some Canadian honkers overhead. I thought they had gone south weeks ago. This was a pretty good-sized gang. I'm fascinated by their constantly changing V formations.
Heard car doors slamming and chatter from all the people going to work at HRDC.

Will go this route more often. The walk up the hill to the hockey rink is a good huff-and-puff! Then can look back over the town all the way to the highway. Now that it's colder I'm not so worried about meeting a rattlesnake on this route!

Walked with DH yesterday and went the full 3 miles up the seal-and-chip road and back. My how things have changed.

Saw:
1. The county has stripped the south side of the road back about twenty feet and planted grass. DH and I tried to figure out how it's growing (we can't plant grass and get it to grow).
2. Another house for sale in the Lake Estates.
3. A kitten on a neighbor's front porch, with a BIG dead mouse. Sorry if that's gross. We're always happy to see what the cat drags in out here ...

Heard:
1. Mowers - sort of strange for a Tuesday afternoon.
2. Roosters - they yell any time of day or night.
3. Our dogs, Juno and Loki, howling at us to take them too!

Saw backhoe working on a storm drain. I'd like to steal it and dig up a chunk of asphalt that creates a dam of sorts at the end of our alley and the bottom of our hill. Winter turns it into an ice skating pond.

Saw young girls running towards home. One in a pink jacket!!

Saw old Schnauzer man. He nodded at me, but no smile..at least not scowling today.

Heard a siren...not sure if it was ambulance or fire truck.

Heard a women yelling her additions to the grocery list to her son.

Heard a dog barking his brains out at the paperboy.

Hi everyone, I am new to the team. I live in Escondido, Ca, I am 53 yrs old. I would call myself an advanced walker now, but I would not have called myself that at the beginning of this year. I like to walk, and have always taken the stairs instead of the elevator. I use to go on evening walks almost every day with my brother, and his wife and their three dogs and my dog until a couple of yrs ago when I moved over an hour away from then. But then I was still going on evening walks with them usually three nights a week while I was still working down by them and having them watch my dog while I was at work until about a yr ago when I got laid off. But after getting laid off, I became really inactive. I was sitting at my computer way too much and not doing a lot of walking or other exercise like before except for house work and yard work. But Mother's day weekend I decided to change all of that and joined SP and several other online weight loss groups. And then set out to run my first 5K, which I did at the beginning of Sept this year. I am one of three co leaders for the Wii Fit Plus team and I saw this team listed in the threads of the SP Team Leaders Threads and thought it sounded interesting. So here I am. So far today I have just worked out doing "Free Step" on the Wii, so I will use that for my first go in here. We are going back and forth from really nice weather not too cold or not too hot in the 70's or so, to Santa Anna hot winds right now. This weekend it was hot, especially Sat. Today it is cooler in the low 70's probably, and we might get some showers the next couple of days with some cooler wind?

Sounds today:
1 leaf blower next door.
2 dogs barking including my 6 yr old dog, and our new 8-9 month old puppy.
3 children playing at a local school(s) close by.

Visual:
1 our dogs playing and jumping all around me while I tried to work out with the Wii.
2 I had the news on tv while I was working out. (So site and sound)
3 saw the puppy came in with dirty muddy feet from digging her first whole in our yard.

Glad to meet you all, will do the next one from a walk around town so that you can learn more about where I am. Instead of just the inside of my house.

Janette

On today's walk I heard lots of crickets and buzzing insects. I also heard walnuts hitting the ground with a thud as they fell from the tree. I was glad at that moment that I was not under the tree when they fell. emoticon I noticed the hulls of hickory nuts discarded by squirrels in preparation for the upcoming winter. I saved a green snake from my dog who was very eager to bring it with us. LOL I also noticed a large animal (probably a deer) made a bed beside what is left of my garden leaving all the grass and weeds mashed down where it rested.

Thank you everyone for sharing your walks! emoticon I truly enjoy reading what you share. emoticon

Today's walk - with company..... and it was all about the children

Heard:

Children playing on a climbing frame in the park
Excited voices as children were met off the school bus
Child complaining because mother wouldn't buy him a MacDonalds!

Saw:

A little girl with her mother - she was pushing her dolls in her pram. We passed them 3 times. She needed a lot of cajoling to complete the homeward journey
emoticon
Mother pushing children in a double buggy. One of the little ones was singing away to her heart's content!
Teenager (still at school) showing off his new smartphone to friends.

Another lovely autumn day. It's due to become colder just in time for my weekend away.....

Reporting in after the weekend - this is yesterday's walk, I also walked on Saturday, but wrote a rushed blog about it so I'll just forget that one.

Also blogged about this, but here's a little more.

Saw:

Office block being knocked down to make room for a new estate for senior citizens.
Lots of sleepy ducks
A fisherman

Heard:

Man sawing an enormous log (saw him too)
The rustle of a bird in the undergrowth
Acorns falling into the canal with a very satisfying 'PLOP'

Linda, I understand what you mean about walking inside. We'll just have to come up with a few 'activities' to compensate. I've had a few thoughts - so 'watch this space' (it might be a couple of weeks or so, though)

Edited to add a thank you to everyone that voted for my previous blog post which became a featured one. I really appreciate everyone's support - you are all great motivators and encouragers. Please keep it up, we all rely on you......

Stiff and sore today. Took a left out the alley and went over a block to start heading north for my coffee walk. There were 2 pink houses in the first block. I have never noticed them before. Weird pepto bismo pink. I'm with your artist friend, Sassy. There is no such color as pink-it's white with red added!

It's Saturday so it was slow. No school kids or people rushing out for work...was a mile into it, almost at the main HWY before I saw people. Frost on cars but not the grass. A Pepsi truck unloading its wares. Smelled peanut butter cookies fresh out of the oven waiting to go into the display case. Smelled the coffee when I opened the door. They had 5 varieties dripping into the pots.

On the way home I went up a different street than normal and ran into my friend who has recently opened up a cupcake store front and she was loading lots of cupcakes into the back of her Blazer to deliver to the Sr. Center for a luncheon later today. They were very pretty.
Saw the grumpy man with the Schnauzer. Noticed lots of leaves on the ground but the trees are still mostly green.

IMLOCOLINDA - - -there's already frost???? I don't like winter very much. I see a snowflake from the window and fall down.

I walked a mile indoors with Leslie so I saw nothing and heard nothing except for the beat of the music and Leslie's voice. It is certainly more boring to walk indoors but it will do for winter. I'll look forward more to spring and walking outside again. But there will still be some nice days.....I hope!

It's raining cats and dogs today! - that's why I stayed in.

It's too late to blog about this tonight, On the iPad now, and that's too tedious.... so this will have to do.

Tramped across new ground with DH today. Wouldn't have done it on my own.

Saw:

Moorhen on lily pads
Beautiful lacy fungi, not seen this before. Even DH was looking for them emoticon
Rare breed cows

Heard:

JCB type digger clearing some scrub
Distant diesel loco hauling freight train
Passing helicopter

The bracken is changing colour very quickly, but the trees are still green

Let the dogs out and went out to check in the yard to see what will survive the frost. Decided I'd better pull on a sweat shirt to walk for coffee.
Saw
Cars along the street covered with frost.
Grass white with the same frost.
A cat sitting on the door sill waiting to be let inside.

Hear
Cars starting
Kids chattering on their way to school
Locomotive horns and bells as they moved through the railroad yard

Coming back the sun was warmer and the frost was gone from the grass and windows where it's warmth was shining down

You had a great walk Jacksgran !!!! - - -the shopping was put away and the sun came out.

I went to the market this morning with the car bec it is raining and cold . . . . I even put the heat on in the car. so I don't know if I'll walk indoors with Leslie today or take a rest day.....I'm still cleaning and going thru trash in the bedroom......I'll check back in later.

Have a good weekend! It's already Friday.

We drove into town for a big shop - I walked home on my own. That was quite crafty, really, because it also meant that DH had to unload the car and put the shopping away emoticon

Saw:

Lorry blocking the road as it unloaded someone's new kitchen cabinets
Lady picking pears from a tree in her front garden
Little ballet dancers arriving for their after school lesson

Heard:

Car doors slamming at the ballet school
Man calling to his wife from their front door (he'd locked himself out)
Squeak of the trolley wheel belonging to the girl delivering the free paper.

When we left home the weather was grey and miserable. As I walked home, though, the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful autumn afternoon.

Walked today - temperature was beautiful and there was nice sunshine, but always with a little bit of a brisk breeze.

I heard some people chatting in the street, the wind blowing and some men working on som scaffolding.

I saw a baby with hot dogs - her treat for lunch today, I saw the bright sunshine, and trees with fruit ready to be picked (I wish I could pick some!)

Have a great Thursday everyone!

Saw
My 6 year old granddaughter smiling and giggling as she watched me jump over lines & every leaf on the track. A game she invented.
My daughter walking briskly towards me to squeeze in 10 flights of stairs with her busy schedule.
My wonderful husband walking the neighborhood with me even though his knees hurt and the wind was icy cold.

Live each moment to its fullest!

Today was brisk and humid, but I got a walk in anyway as I had to go to the doctor's.

I heard the wind rustling through the trees and the birds chirping. I also heard a type of gunshot . . . I hope it wasn't!

I saw the low clouds covering the peaks of the mountains, leaves blowing on the ground and I saw many strange new fall insects....I don't like bugs!

Imlocolinda - I think they paint the lines this time of year bec it is darker more and the lines are needed to define the roads better. I agree with you about the snow covering them up though.

Coffee walk this morning was chilly. Autumn in the air. Wind still blowing. It had laid over some of the big sunflowers. We also had a city crew working on a corner, digging a hole to repair a sewer line that leads to a storm drain. Down on the main street where my c-store is the state was painting new yellow lines on HWY 2 running through town. I always wonder why they do it this time of year when it will all be covered with snow in 6 weeks and scuffed off by the sand they use to keep it from getting slick. More of my tax dollars at work?!!! Would have been nice to have those bright defined lines at the beginning of summer traffic on Memorial Day Weekend.

Walked to meet grandson from school

Saw:
two workmen arguing over who was going to go up a ladder......!
teenagers returning from school
a big hole in the road following a gas leak. (being fixed)

Heard:
shopping trolleys banging together
excited children's voices - school's out!
church clock striking the hour.

It drizzled while I walked part of the way, it was unexpected and I wasn't prepared. I didn't mind one little bit!

Linda, I loved reading that. It would make a worthy blog post too. (I haven't read your blog yet - that's next)

I could feel that cutting wind. I remember someone once saying that it's a bit like being sand blasted - or kissed by a man with later afternoon shadow emoticon

I was too young to understand what that meant at the time

Thanks for sharing with us.

I live in an old part of town kind of at the bottom of a bench with tree-lined streets. I walk about 2.25 miles to get my coffee on sidewalks and it's all pretty level-sidewalks are in tough shape from tree roots and salt damage in the winter but all-in-all not an unpleasant experience. I have wind chimes all along the outside of my side of the duplex. I love to listen to them. I knew it was windy today and they had predicted gusts up to 65 mph but it was no biggie going out for coffee this a.m.

My afternoon walk is a whole 'nother story!! I was on SP too long and had to take a fast bath and wash my hair and it's too hard to comb out all this hair when it's wet and I was running late for a lunch date so just pulled it back in a wet pony tail. Sorry, Stacy-in my mad rush to get out the door I forgot to put on my tiara...I have a real one and was going to wear it because I knew my friends would love that story! So the walk toward the c-store was pretty normal. Saw the usual yards and the leaves are finally starting to change and there were some twigs and old dead branches littering the streets and yards from the wind. As I got closer to downtown there was much more garbage blowing around...the infernal plastic grocery bags flapping in the wind. I got to the main "drag" which is HWY 2 through town. I am going to head west up a fairly steep hill to get to the mall where I am meeting my friends. The wind actually took my breath away...coming in gusts from the west. I passed a grunge couple with a dog. The girl was trying desperately to hang on to a cardboard sign asking for a ride to Great Falls. The dog was trying to hide behind the guy's large duffle bag and stay out of the wind. Sand was blowing right at me. It felt like getting sand-blasted. I was trying to lean into the wind to hike up the hill. I bet I looked hysterical. My hair flying in a tail straight out behind me. It was naturally blown dry by the time I got to the restaurant. I wolfed down a veggie plate and rode with my friends back down to my own part of town. My friend was in town today looking for an apartment and the appointment that she had was for one just one block over and 2 blocks up. It's a very old building but the apartment is large and all the utilities are paid and she told them she'd take it.

I've never been in this building before but would swear that the same people built my duplex. The kitchen cabinets are an old shaker style and the doors are paned glass just like mine. We drove down to a different restaurant and had coffee and visited. Then they were on their way back home so I walked 12 blocks straight south for home. I was protected from the wind walking the blocks but at intersections it was brutal. There were lots of newspaper pages blowing around, plastic grocery bags stuck in hedges, birds huddled on the ground because they could not fly in the wind but they were nervous when I got close. I saw 2 kids with kites heading up toward the college. Smiled to myself and thought what brave souls we are when we are kids. Those kites are certainly in North Dakota tonight!!

I was thankful that I live in this protected from the wind neighborhood filled with lots of old houses with character and glad that Sunny will be close enough to walk over on a daily basis is just a couple weeks. I was amazed at how gray and cloudy the sky was-except for the edges of the horizon that were as blue and beautiful as the sky in Judy's Ontario pictures today...just the edges. I was thankful that no rain was coming out of the clouds and that they were upper atmosphere and will be gone tomorrow. And I was glad to see the dogs running to the gate waiting to greet me like I'd been gone for a month!!

We are becoming more aware of our surroundings, so let's continue to keep our eyes and ears open. Wherever you walk - on the spot, around your home, on the treadmill or out in the open - you can always find something to tell us.

So.... choose at least one of the following for each walk (you can do one three times if you like, but make the results different) The seasons are changing - let's view them from all around the world.

1) listen for 3 sounds. Sounds from you iPod, TV, the country or town - anything is valid including the sound of your washing machine

2) notice 3 visual things. If you are in familiar surroundings you can still do this - for example, choose 3 items of the same colour that you have in your room,

3) make a note of the weather - we can compare around the world.

4) a new addition this week - share your thoughts with us. Do you find that thes walks are becoming more contemplative, do you solve your problems - or do you just value the 'alone' time?

Walk with purpose and enjoy your week. Don't forget that you can download your chart so that you can mark off your progress. 12weekswalking.wordpress.com/about/w
