Well one month later week 6 starts for me! LOL!!

1 mile today- because my dumb "walkTV" I downloaded Leslie Sansone's DVDs on froze my computer at 1 mile! grrrrrr!

We are a balmy 32 this morning and I'm heading out for my coffee and big fat Sunday paper walk. My hands feel much better. They were pretty chapped from walking and working in the cold so I did the old vaseline coating and covered with cotton gloves and awoke to much softer, nicer feeling hands this morning. Have a great day!!

It's 3 degrees here!! Yikes!! Puppy goes out in 1 1/2 hours- I need to bundle up!

I took Friday off and did not walk. The leg pain was bad. I do think soaking in warm water helps more than meds! It's good to take a break too!

Saturday- 4 miles!! I actually had extra energy from my day off!

emoticon 0 degrees!! It was quite warm here (40) on Tues night but the wind was terrible! Brrr!
Tonight it's 36. Our temps are supposed to drop Saturday I think.

Yes, Mike had the nerve pain and the numbness and tingling. He was so stubborn about using a walker but I used to drive him out to WalMart and get a cart and then he could push the cart up and down the aisles. He used to get so frustrated at the "traffic jams" in some aisles because he was only going up and down the aisles, not shopping but getting in some walking. We used to go to the pool a lot too, because water walking was easier and we always loved to swim. Then sit in the hot tub after and back to the pool. I think that kept him out of his wheelchair for a couple of years.

We had ZERO degrees this morning. I knew it was cold last night and the predicted low was 8. I let the dogs out at 6. There was snow-just a skiff-on the lawn and sidewalks. Didn't head out for coffee until noon. It was a balmy 15 degrees by then. But no wind and no more snow!! I did stop by the senior center just to warm up for a minute on my way home. When I got home I changed my mittens and put on a neck scarf and swept the walks. I love it when they can just be swept instead of shoveled. My young neighbor (35) had a minor heart attack at 32 and he has all the snowblowers and a 4-wheeler with a plow and still hand shovels his huge "parking lot" driveway. My mom was grumbling about it last Sunday when we got so much snow...that it was the worst thing he could be doing. He looks so thin and so old. Well, sure enough, Monday he was medi-vacced out for another heart episode. I gripe about the lightheadedness of my low blood pressure but it could be so much worse. We all have our own issues and we just keep going.

Thanks Linda! Yes MS is cruel, when you have a really good day you think maybe you've beaten it and then it always has to remind you that it's still there. I have a lot of nerve pain in my feet and legs that used to be numbness. Did Mike have nerve pain? That part is hardest for me.

Since I walk with Leslie Sansone she does different walk moves thru out the walk DVD, most times I just stumble around walking during those, because my legs can not move like that anymore! LOL!! If they speed up I can still go my slow pace, if I get tired I just slow down. I can't lift my legs up higher to pick up the pace or kick. I laugh when on the DVD Lesle talks about posture and balance!! I don't have much of either! Most times I'm leaning back against my bed as I'm walking or I hold onto my chair. She taught me that there is no wrong way to do it. So I don't mind!

Sometimes I "feel" like my walking doesn't count because I can't walk any miles down the side walk without falling. But then that's just that darn "MS depression" trying to get me down!

So I proudly pro-claim- 4 miles again today! Woo-Hoo!!

I'm so proud of you, Eliz!! I remember how hard it was to predict how Mike would do after a particularly "busy" day. Sometimes he was fine and other times almost bed-ridden for a day or more. MS is such a cruel disease and you are handling yours with such grace. I applaud you!!

Thanks Linda! I started with the 1 mile walks 4-5 times a day and now I now 3 miles together, or 2 together- but this morning I did 4!!!!!!!! emoticon
Since my MS relapse I have recovered faster and I give walking the credit. It's not how fast! It's doing it!

And I'm so glad you gave me the nudge to do the 5k!!

You're doing so well, Eliz. I get in several walks a day so am racking up the miles but I rarely do more than 4 in one walk. I usually just get in 3 walks of about 3 miles...and that's a good day!! On busy days I only get in 2 walks and then the rest of my fitness minutes are dancing, swimming and yoga or pilates!

Thank goodness no storms here- but as close as MI and Chicago! emoticon So frightening- November!

Hope you had a nice coffee walk! It was 25 degrees here this a.m. and windy- brrrrrrrr! I could barely get my nose out the door to tell puppy to potty! LOL! At least the big dog just needs the door opened- he needs no reminders as to why he's out there! LOL!!

I fixed the link in the announcements so all you have to do is click "GO" once you open the page and it will let you register for the virtual race. I've suggested to Eliz that she do it as a 1K. I'm hoping we can get some more support for Judy in her Santa walk. I have a blue fleece pullover with a big lime green Grinch on it that says, "Mean One" and a red furry Santa hat with the Grinch in all his scowling glory. I'll be wearing that in lieu of the Santa suit. Check out the link and see if you want in. You can put in how far and walk/run and then when you finish just post your time!! It's all official like!! and I think you can even print out a little certificate if you are so inclined. I'll be doing mine very early as I have a busy day of volunteer work at the sr. center and then we're supposed to bet another big snowstorm mid-afternoon on Saturday. Join Judy!! and me...

emoticon for the increase in walking! That's so exciting - I found the same, thought I'd be lucky to do it a couple of times, now you can't keep me out of my walking shoes. Go for it. Week 7 will be here before you know it!

Snow - no, not good. All that digging and shovelling is good exercise, but you can do without it. I think you can safely call it alternative exercise. Hope today is better...

Time does fly when you're having fun and racking up the steps!! Good for you. I spent a great part of the day shoveling snow. We ended up with 9 inches and it took me over 4 hours with lots of water and warm up breaks to get the sidewalks cleared and the cars dug out. Was only 8 degrees and with the wind the wind chill at times was -20. I'm so thankful for lots of mitten to be able to change when they get wet and for lots of layers of warm clothes. I only got in my 2.77 mile coffee walk today but got in lots of minutes on other things.

My husband is the chaplain of our local stock car track. Lots of walking to visit with the drivers.

Got over 500 minutes of fitness this month already! didn't make any lists or anything...but feeling great.

I managed to get 30 minutes in on the treadmill and 10 minutes on my stepper. Even with a few aches...I got a burst of energy.

Had planned to walk this morning...just could not do it. Feeling a bit achy. I have done really well walking in the evenings while the TV is on - so that is the plan for tonight.

I have brought my 2# dumbells to work and will be using those throughout the day a bicep curls etc at a time....as time allows.

Jules-I walk mostly at night because that's when I'm up in the summer. We have that extreme heat in the summer too, only in the upper 90's, low 100's but we also have the bitter, extreme cold of minus 20 in the winters. Because we are high desert country our temps are very much like Siberia-National Geographic even compared us once!! I'd much rather walk in the cold than the heat. I don't like the heat. But I've worked outside for a great part of my adult life so I'm used to the temperature changes and extremes and easily adaptable. We have wind that almost never stops...except for summer when you are just praying for a slight breeze. I was just talking to a friend of mine about in the old pioneer stories the howling of the incessant wind drove so many women insane!! We know BLIZZARDS-and it's not a treat from Dairy Queen!!

Heard this morning that South Dakota over by Sioux Falls got 5 inches of snow last night. We don't have sun today, but it's not snowing. That won't come until Friday or Saturday. Did my usual coffee walk this a.m. and then came home, changed clothes and walked over to the pool for morning water aerobics and pool walking. Still have a bad headache but can't sleep it off so thought maybe walking would be the ticket!!

The best cure for stressing is to count your blessings...and a long walk won't hurt either!

IMLOCOLINDA - I would love to walk outside more often. My challenge is that from April to October the average temperature here is 115 degrees. We hit 126 twice this year. When it "cools down" the overnight low is 98 degrees and that is at 2 in the morning.

Now is really perfect. It is in the 80's during the day and the 50's at night. But as a Salvation Army Officer from November through Christmas we work 12-16 hours every day. These may be excuses...but well you know.

I do not like gyms and will never join one again. I have my treadmill (commercial) and my "cheapie" stair stepper. Plus I have sets of 2#, 5# and 10# weights.

What I really want to do is get better at "scheduling" work out time. That is going to have to wait until January though.

I don't think I'll try the treadmill. Will continue to walk outside and in the pool. Just don't have room for one at home and not going to join a gym anytime soon. I know they are great for some people, but I like the great outdoors too much to give it up.

Did not have the best food day yesterday. Got off schedule - and gave into a hormonal craving...but those are all excuses. When it comes down to it - I made poor choices. But I did track those poor choices.

That being said, 30 minutes of treadmill today - starts me over on the right path.

My leg is sore today from physical therapy yesterday...so I did 3 walks and only 30 minutes each. Tomorrow will be a better day. Have lots to get done before the big snow comes on Sunday!!

I don't walk to videos so don't know that much about it, but couldn't you split the difference and walk a mile and a half....or instead of 16 minutes do 17 for a few days and then 18 for a few days....just increasing by a minute or by a few more steps instead of trying to push to double it?? In any event, you are doing great, Jackie. Don't hurt yourself. You're right about pushing too hard and then you're out...but a few more steps or another minute might be just what you need to increase your mileage. Another suggestion I saw on another page was to split the work out into two per day...so try doing only 10 minutes morning and 10 minutes evening and you'll be doing 20 minutes...and spreading the calorie burn to two meals!!

I will do the 16 min indoor wlking 1 mile.
I felt good again last week and went to the 2 mile video, without problems but half the speed as Leslie. Then I found myself not being able to push myself to do anything. I went back to the 1 mile without problems. I think now it is better to finish the month of October with 1 mile and do it, instead of 2 miles and doing nothing. This is such a struggle for me and I feel like I'm making no progress, but I think the muscle weakness has a huge say in this....I'll have to do what I can.

They weren't "new shoes", they were newer shoes. I go barefoot way too often and lots of times just slide my feet into my crocs. I have some old tennis shoes I walk in or else my barefoot socks...so to put on real shoes is just not such a good deal. I should have taken my barefoot socks and just changed out after a period of time. I know better. But the pampering helped and I was still able to get in plenty of walking on Tuesday.

I bought some new socks for my snowboots. I also have a couple old pair of hiking boots I need to get out and start wearing. The physical therapist says my back would be much better if I used the orthotics all the time and quit walking in my bare feet and barefoot socks. That's what the podiatrist says too...but the orthopedist says bare foot is the best, most natural. Who are you going to trust??

I did my coffee walk. Walked up to the hockey rink later. That was tough going up the hill in the wind. Now am heading over to the pool for some water walking. Had acupuncture today for my knee! We'll see if that helps

Ouch indeed. I've just got some new shoes - definitely breaking them in first.

I've been very lax since returning from my weekend away, but I have been walking. Here are the notes from yesterday - and I'll be blogging about it soon

Saw:

2 cars that nearly caused bad accidents by pulling out at junctions without looking properly and judging the speed of approaching cars.

My feet are killing me today. Walked too long when they were hurting yesterday in newer shoes with new orthotics and even a foot massage last night before bed didn't help. I put some icy hot on them and put on my socks and will tough it out for some things I must get done while the sun is still up in the sky...but I'm going to do my stability ball and go to the pool for evening swim and water walking. My coffee walk this morning was so slow! It's what I get for trying to cram so much into such a short time.

I went walking around the block today. I did it this morning after breakfast. This is the first time I did it this early. It felt great. No one was around because all the children were in school. I just walked and enjoyed all of the changes that fall brings. emoticon emoticon Decorations were out for Halloween.

I did my coffee walk this morning and then spent the day outside in the yard. Had to move boxes and furniture so my mom can get her car in there and also raked the front lawns and mowed. Cheated a bit by using the mower's bag to just pick up leaves but then put them in the compost pile. Noted all the places that need paint...guess I'll have to paint the house in the spring...and trying to figure out a new placement for the walkway up to the house. Need a new sidewalk and think I'm going to change the placement and try to get away from the steps or at least make them more gradual. Mom was teasing me about it being cool outside yet I was sweating like crazy!!
