No, it's not crucial. It's just an easy way for a lot of us to get our protein levels up where they need to be to gain the muscle we want.
It's not that too much protein kills the kidneys so much as eating it in absence of carbs on a consistent basis. Carbs help protein do it's thing in the system and vice-verse. As well as a litlte bi of fat.

I was browsing the forum and I see alot of comments about whey and protein shakes. Is it crucial that I drink protein and whey shakes to pump up my body? Or can I build up to it? I don't want to overwhelm myself.
