I started a new topic in the forum. This first study is on Prayer in the Bible.

To start I tried to keep it easy with 2 readings in a week. This will take us up until Thanksgiving as there are 14 readings in all.

Blessings!

Here are the topics I found interesting.

* Prayers of the Bible
* The Holy Spirit
* Women of the Bible
* God and Nature.

which sounds the most interesting to you? What I will do is give the readings/chapter with a date to be completed by. The big question is to read one a week? or one a day? or one over a couple of days?

I was thinking of a couple days for a chapter or a week.

I haven't read it yet, but it says it is about your Christian vocation. The studies you spoke of work for me. Is it something you could post or how would we work it?

sorry for the delay in responding. We are having a few computer issues here at the house. Yesterday as I was getting ready for my Sunday School class, I noticed there were several interesting studies in the student bible, such as women of the bible. The studies all are 10-15 passages. but I think I left my stuff in the class room or my husband's car (who is working nights this week).

The large catechism sounds good, but I am doing a lot of prep work for teaching confirmation in it and want something different just for me. Does that make sense? Luckily my Sunday School class is doing similar work to the 8th graders.

So what do you think? If I find my stuff tonight, I can give you a better example of the bible study, verses and themes.

What is "God at Work" Gene Veith like? It sounds intersting.

I have the book, "God at Work" Gene Veith. Anybody have that one or does it sound like something you'd like to read? I haven't read it yet but I want too?

I'm still interested, too, but I am horribly indecisive! So I will let you two choose, and I will be happy to participate. Our own church's women's Bible study seems more like a book reading club, although I will admit our latest book DOES have more Bible references than some of the earlier ones had. But I confess I am having a terrible time with some of the women there: their personalities just irritate me to no end, so of course that makes me feel guilty since we are supposed to "love one another." I am ready for some time off, to study with some Real Lutherans! Count me in, please.

I am game for a bible study. My classes this fall feel rather light. Only a principles in business management and an internship for my minor in YFM (youth and family ministry).

I am working with 8th graders starting next week - and am very excited. I love 6-8th graders in their faith journeys. They are finally at the age where they start to get their faith.

I will try to find that book, or something else, and perhaps we can get started. Now that September is here, it's time for "back to school!" The Sunday morning Bible study I am in is going through C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, but I guess that is not strictly speaking a Bible study. But it will, I hope, "equip us to give an answer" when people ask about our Christian belief. He really sounds Lutheran sometimes!

Earlier there was a mention of a catechism study. But that was months ago. There are some good studies on the CPH site if we don't do a catechism review. One of my friends sent a title that sounded good: "What Do Lutherans Believe? A Study Guide in Christian Teachings for Adults." She is concerned because at her church the studies are more non-denominational. I have that concern at my church, too, so I thought I'd check out this book. Has anyone else heard of it? It's by a Lutheran pastor, Walter Snyder.

Is this study going on somewhere else? I am interested in studying some REAL Lutheran study, not the inter-denominational studies our church is currently doing in its women's groups.

I think a study of Luther's Small Catechism would be great! Didn't Martin Luther himself study it regularly?

I'd say to take posts all week long. I wouldn't want someone to not participate in the discussion because they missed the cut off.

I'm up for studying the Small Catechism :)

Any suggestions for improvements on format:

1) Start a "Small Catechism Study" thread in the "On a More Theological Note" forum

2) Take 1 week for each of the 6 chief parts - set a date/time for discussion? Or take posts all week long?

I'm game for pretty much anything. I've been told I need to know the Small Catechism pretty well for my candidacy interview in a few months, so I'll lean toward that.

Well we could read something on a weekly basis, for ex. a chapter and make comments throughout the week on just about anything we read we find interesting, exciting or inspiring.
