Every Monday, I do 1 hour of ST with my Cross-Country Skiing Conditioning Group.
As I am straight as a ramrod, I can only be more supple! My goal is to be able to touch my feet by June.

Besides the pushup challenge I did burpees and weights exercises for chest and abs. I pushed up my weight to ten pounds (this is heavy for me) so I did only one round. I hope to start doing two to third rounds by the end of the month.

Sounds great! I'll do the initial test and report back tomorrow. I know push ups are great for all strength training as they target so many muscles. Maybe if we leave it on this feed we will have others to help push us too.

If you look at the website, it is a specific training program based on how many consecutive push-ups you can do. I suggest that tomorrow, we get our starting point. The website suggested 3 times a week - which you need to take rest days between strength training. Report back tomorrow your number. We need to urge each other on, but we will each have our own starting point, one of us may be more fit than the other, so overall increase would be the goal.

SpinngJW - I will do a push up challenge with you. It might just be what we both need. How about a certain number a day for the next week? Wall, knees or toes which ever you can do. You can name the number. We can see how it works for the next week and then increase if it's working?

I am struggling to do ST. I know what to do, but I am feeling overwhelmed by it. The push-up challenge sounds interesting. I don't have a gym membership, but my daughter bought 10lb dumbbells.

I also am struggling to do stretching. Any advice?

Excellent, Daring! Welcome and great to have you. We could definitely use ideas as not a lot of members are posting for strength workout.
I woke up early and I'm done with 7,538 steps. And I added my dumbbells mostly doing the arms when I got home. Didn't count the sets (they're sore!!) but did few hundred more steps walking in place while watching tv.
Usually I'm hungry but this morning I was famished. Lol

I have been a big MIA lately on my st. Well that is if you don't include the Classical Stretch training I do almost everyday. It is mostly a flexibility program but it involves strength training using your own body weight too. I sweat so I believe it should count. emoticon

I record this program from one of my local PBS stations: Classical Stretch with Miranda Esdmond-White. It is exceptional.

I posted on the cardio forum that I will be doing Toning Zumba today so that is one my st things to do today. Also I need to jump back in to another challenge I am doing with a Facebook group. We are doing st exercises almost everyday targeting a different area. That will probably be my template for most of what I do here.

WooHoo! Make sure you do it after your walk. So the muscles are all warmed up. And it's more effective. Still out and about and haven't logged into Fitbit yet. Later.

Yes, one day at a time. Make small changes. Baby steps. Otherwise, it gets overwhelming. And we've all been there when that happens.

Going to start using my dumbbells again after my walk today. Although it's really helping but I'm not consistent. Have to work on that.

well, today i did my push up, crunches, squats, dips and plank challenges. it is getting a lot more "challenging", but one day at a time, right?

i was so tired from the challenges that i didn't get a chance to do my usual strength dvd. i am sure i could have done it, but i had to work a midnight tonight, and there truly wasn't enough time for me to rest before starting the dvd, and a nap before working my 14 hour day... BUT i DID walk, got in 14,000+ steps! woo-hoo!

I do a 10 minute cardio to warm up then I do my strength training. I did legs today. Did my hip adductor (inner thigh muscle), hip abductor (outer thigh muscle), calves, leg presses and abs. I did two sets of 20 reps.
Pampa, it is good to rotate body parts in strength training. I alternate days with upper and lower so my muscles have a chance to rest. You can do abs everyday.

I agree Sara. I would love to increase my strength workouts but having hard time at starting. Not starting as in accountability but what steps to take. I know I know pick up those dumbbells for starters, right?. LOL. I have couple of sets but I think I can either borrow or purchase from any sporting goods store.
And I looked at your link and it definitely looks good. The only thing is that I've read somewhere the old was doing half of the lower or upper body and rest the next day. But the new thing these days is do the cardio first so your muscles are all warmed up and ready to do the strength exercises. Then rest the next day with strength only but keep up with your cardio.
Has anyone read about this program?

I love your challenge goals. I say I want to increase my strength but never put it in exact goals. I think in need to may own 'fitness' test and then set goals from there.

today i did 35 minutes of biggest loser cardio (with 3 pound weights), and also i am on week three of pushup, crunches, squats, dips, and plank challenges! all of these challenges help you to increase the number you do, also free.

so, in 7 weeks, i am supposed to be able to do 100 push-ups consecutively, 200 crunches, consecutively, 150 squats, 50 dips, all consecutively, and the plank challenge, i made up myself, and this the third week, am doing 1 minute 20 seconds of plank. i HOPE i will be able to do them all, either way, i am definitely stronger every week! emoticon

great job everyone! keep up the great work, you guys are inspiring me!

Went to the gym at lunch today. Since I didn't have a whole lot of time, I only did two sets of 10 reps at a moderate weight. Upper body today, so I lifted for my biceps, triceps, inner arms, back, shoulders and abs. Going to be sore tomorrow. emoticon

I saw Marci's post earlier for hand weights. Last night while I tried to complete my walk doing 15k steps for the first time, I added dumbbells and moved my arms (all over the place..lol). OMG! I loved it!! Thanks Marci!!
Although I was a little sore (and not just the arms) when I went to bed last night, I felt great. And this morning I woke up motivated to walk again!

Took 5 lb hand weights on my walk this am- have to say it was challenging but about every 5 minutes I would a work a different group of upper body muscles. I felt silly at first w/ my weights but quickly got over it- felt good to use my arms for something other than holding my water bottle while I walked. emoticon

this is AWESOME! exactly what i want! i do walking (TRY to do between 5,000-10,000 steps a day. (i use a fit bit)

i take off my fitbit, when i do strength training and when i am doing cardio...

as for strength training, i have just started (2 weeks ago) the "hundredpushup challenge" it is a web site, where you start at about 5 push ups, and they give you a work out plan to do 100 consecutive push ups in 7 weeks! i am stronger already! i also am doing their crunch program, squat program, dip program! i have made my own little plank program (works my core), also i do exercise dvds that use weights. i try to do these 2-3 times a week.

if you want to check out the web programs, go to .... http://www.hundredpushups.com there will be links to their other programs....

ANYWAY, how are we supposed to do this? just post after we work out?

thanks for doing this, GREAT idea!

Doing the Strength workout is still a challenge for me. I would love to walk and do strength afterwards as I hear it works out more of your muscles than doing separately. Any ideas on this or type of exercise, please jump in.
