Personally, when I'm in the eat-all-you-can-get-your-hands-on phase, watching a movie doesn't help at all - I'd just eat in front of the tv. Sometimes reading a book or a magazine helps, sometimes I'd eat while reading, through I rarely do that anymore, used to when I was a teen.
I'd suggest giving yourself a manicure - that way your hands are doing something that's not handling food :) You can even draw something on your nails. By the time your nails are dry, the hunger may have passed? Also, you get pretty nails.
I guess if you're into drawing, that could work, too. Though most artists I know are really slim, perhaps they forget to eat when they get into their art.
Good luck everyone,
JR

Life is simple or complicated, depends on how you look at it. It doesn't really matter either way. --me

Great suggestions! Thanks!
I just had a protein bar. Good carbs (23) and decent protein (14). I have no fruit in the house. I don't have much. I guess I need to go to the store. This afternoon I will have the yellow potatoes, carrots and sugar snap peas. I found a great salsa at Trader Joes. Maybe I will add that. Tonight is chicken tenders and brown rice. I add red peppers and onions. Side of carrots and sugar snap peas. I load it with salsa. I can't stand chicken but it is one of the only proteins I can stand. I do like tempeh but it is a little higher in calories/fat and a little costly. At this point I think I need to skip snacks. I don't know if that is a good idea but I am going to try this for now. Because of my weight fluxuation my metabolism is shot. My back is trashed and I am facing surgery. I find out this week. Because of that I have pretty much stopped exercising. This is really hard on me because for years I have been exercising at least an hour 5-6 days a week. It feels good and is good as a serotonin boost.

Thanks for the support! Good luck to you today!

I know what you mean. I am right there with you. I would be classified as an emotional eater. I am trying SO hard to stop. Keep your head up! You can get through this!!  Just don’t give up! Today’s a new day!
Well, my nutritionist was upset with me because I did the same thing! I wouldn’t eat carbs and at night I was craving them like crazy. She said that our meals should have a protein, a carb, and a fruit or veggie. Our snacks should have a protein and a fruit or veggie, (we don’t have to have carbs for snacks). Our day should look like this: 6:00am-Breakfast; 9:00am-Snack; 12:00pm-Lunch; 3:00pm-Snack; 6:00pm-Dinner; 9:00pm –snack.
We should eat a big breakfast, medium lunch, small dinner. For breakfast we are to have all three/four food groups. So, I eat a large portion of egg whites, a piece of whole grain toast, and fruit. Or I will have raw oats made with skim milk, and berries on top. You can make a breakfast wrap with whole grain wraps, eggs, and stir fry veggies. There are more options than you realize. If you eat healthy carbs in the AM you won’t be craving them in the evening. I have noticed that myself.
Snacks should be yogurt, berries, and fresh fruit with string cheese; rice with salsa; slices of turkey on a wrap. Etc.
Lunches can be sweet potatoes with salsa, chicken salad, grilled chicken, steamed veggies; fruit, etc.
Dinners should be smaller and consist of a lot of protein and less carbs because it’s the end of the day…Hope this helps!!!

It is great that you keep trying. Yesterday was a total disaster for me. My girlfriend has been out of town a lot lately and that makes me really lonely when I go to bed at night. My mom lives with us so the days are quite as bad. I find it very nurturing to get in bed and eat. SOOOO bad for me!
Are you supposed to eat carbs spaced out throughout the day? I tend to wait until mid afternoon to eat anything because once I do I'm like a wild animal! She said no way jose! I have to eat first thing in the morning so that my brain isn't starving for carbs. It makes sense, but like you I am terrified of the weight gain. I have to look at the fact that doing it my way is already causing weight gain. So, this morning I am going for it. I am having a protein bar that is pretty high in carbs! Wish me luck and good luck to you today! We are beating this because we keep trying!
Oh baby yellow dutch potatoes are also a great carb. They are super sweet so you don't need to put much on them. I put a tiny bit of butter on them so that they aren't to dry. The way I prepare them is to chop them up in pretty small pieces, boil until tender and than smash them up. I also add the spice Zatarans and that gives them an oomphh for no calories!
What kinds of carbs do you eat during the day? Specifically morning.

Thanks girl! It's a long road and I am nowhere close but I'm taking it one step at a time. I did really well yesterday but I did end up having chips in the evening. :( wasn't happy about that this morning. *sigh* Never ending battle.

Well, the nutritionist I had was amazing. I too have to have more carbs than normal and I HATE that because I feel like that makes me gain weight. She was pointing me in the direction of healthy carbs such as sweet potatoes, starchy vegetables, rice, etc. It's hard but you can do it! I just need to stop eating so late at night. :( I just don't know how.

Thanks for the support Britt. I went to a nutritionist and was very disappointed. It was however when I was very overweight and maybe I just didn't like what I heard. Because of a health issue I am required to be on a higher carb diet than most "approve of" these days. It is doctor appointed and for a good reason, so I would have to find one that could work with me.
I am proud of you for hanging in there! You can do this!

I am SO sorry to hear what you are going through. I created this thread because I too have a problem with eating when I am not hungry or eating a lot at night for no reason. I can relate with the fact that once I get started I cannot stop! I too have tried everything. I am still searching for the answer. I will say that a nutritionist has helped me. I was recently diagnosed with a severe case of Celiac Disease, (I cannot come into contact with Gluten.) I have gained weight and I am not happy at all! I got down to 125 and LOVED it and felt so good. I am now 140ish and hate it! I just put on almost 20lbs from just eating at night!!! It’s terrible….When I went to the nutritionist she helped me by planning my meals every two hours. They were small meals but had protein, starch, veggie in every meal/snack. It has helped me with my hunger, and my night snacking. When you eat the right things at the right time it curbs your cravings and appetite. I just try to focus on the fact that the junk food may taste good in the moment but after the fact I am depressed, disappointed, and severely upset. It’s not worth it!!! Feeling healthy and looking good is 10x better than the chips, crackers, cereal, etc. I am really focusing on that!! Also, try setting small goals (like daily goals) that has helped me. Like for example, I will tell myself I can go to the store and pick up one single pack of crackers/cereal and that is it! I go to the store to get because if I keep it in my house I will binge. Then set small goals of getting in 2 servings of vegetables one day. If you set huge goals you will get discouraged. If you set a goal of losing 20 pounds, you will get frustrated to easily. Set small daily goals. Write them down. Post them on your fridge, mirror, everywhere! Then reward yourself when you succeed! Just an idea…I hope this helps. I am still in the same boat as you for I have not figured it out yet.  I will keep searching and share any input that I have.

I was hoping that I would find a thread dealing with this type of issue. I am eating fiercely with huge rage. I can't stop. I go to bed every night telling myself that I "tomorrow is another day". As soon as I eat ANYTHING - I am off and running. I eat whatever I can. Someone said something about being a "secret eater". I have brought that up on forums many times and have never gotten anyone to respond that they relate. I am so glad to hear of someone. I have always called it "sneak eating". I eat behind my family's back daily. I do whatever I can to get out of the house alone. I have spoken to my family about it and they do what they can. I always say "I'm ok going out alone" and 90% of the time I fail.
I have gained about 25-30 lbs. I have lost 100lbs 5 times in my life. I CAN'T do this again. I CAN'T.
How do I get through this? I have tried all of the things suggested. I have been to treatment, OA, journaled, brushed my teeth, tried sugar free candy. I have tried therapists to no avail. My last one was overweight. He "specialized" in eating disorders but I found out that he doesn't consider compulsive overeating a disorder. I went to him a couple of more times. I live in a small town and he is it as far as a specialist.
We have no junk food in the house. I will over eat anything. Protein bars, healthy cereal, rice. I struggle with getting "a ton" of veggies in because I don't like them. Most nights I eat stir fry with either rice or pilaf and chicken, red peppers, onions and banana peppers. I have a side of baby carrots and sugar snap peas. That and "salad fixins" seem to be it for me.
I need to know if anyone can help me. I am desperate.

I have woke up late with an upset stomach again and slight soreness with my foot as well as the hicups. I am also with allergies or something with my eyes. I had this yesterday and allegra did not work for this. It has taken some time, but I am going through EA, OA, and hypnosis in order to keep my eating under control. The EA is for emotional anynomus and OA is over eater's anynomus.

I would recommend consulting a health care professional, your Dr a therapist I would highly recommend consulting someone who works with people and eating disorders.

Sparks is great and the people here are fantastic but at some point it would be a good idea to involve professionals, its just a matter of finding said people who can help and are knowledgeable.

I would also recommend a support group like Over Eaters Anonymous, its not just for big people its for anyone who has food issues, its a life saver for me. Aside from that I am afraid we must all figure out what is best for us, I wish you well :)

wow! I have never heard of that! Where did you get it and what exactly does is it called? Can you keep me posted on how it works for you? I am really working on my snacking habits. That is the only thing that is holding me back. I workout on a regular basis and eat very healthy meals, it's just those snacks that kill me. Keep me posted on how things are going for you. Again, any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! keep them coming! :)

Another thing I have bought myself is a waist cincher, it sucks my stomach in, corrects my posture and helps deplete my appetite. It worked yesterday for my eating. I didnot snack at all between meals and ate smaller portions. I am going to measure my waist inches in a few months to see if I have any loss there.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and help me. It is also good to know that I am not alone...I have just started to journal my feelings when I start to feel the need to eat at night. I know it is emotional but I have not figured out the triggers that are causing my emotions. It's so weird because my life is going amazing and yet I feel anxious and at times depressed. I am working on trying to get myself back on my feet because in the past when I started losing weight I was very modivated and NEVER fell off the wagon. Now, when I am trying to lose the last bit I instead eat because I am stressed and end up gaining more weight. I am thankful I have recognized my issues but the problem now is that I don't know what to do to fix them.

Sorry this is late - I am catching up on messages.

Have you tried journaling to help you find out why you are having the anxiety and nervousness? It's great you have identified some triggers, but what is causing them? By journaling your feelinngs prior to the binge, you may be able to find a key to conquering them.

You are so right! I very well might need to start eating with friends or family. :) I had to smile at your comment about God sitting beside us while we eat. It's so true! I just pray the whole evening that I will not binge eat and I will stay on the path towards my goal. I will try your techniques! Thank you so much for sharing them!

I am excited to say that I did NOT binge eat at all last night!!!!! I'm super proud of myself. Yes, it was only one day BUT one day is closer to my goal! :) Thank you again!

Years ago I did a "what kind of eater are you" quizz and it diagnosed me as a "secret eater". Possibly you may be too. That poses a new thought pattern. You may want to eat dinner with a friend, some family which will also keep you on track. At the time I didnt want to admit my problem to my friends and family, so I just imagined that God was sitting with me at each meal...which He really was since he can see everything we do anyway. It made me a more honest eater.....most of the time. Today, many many years later I dont have THAT problem anymore.....many other, but at least not that one. emoticon

Wow! Thank you all SO much for the tips, suggestions, and help! You have no idea how much this helps me! Just the support is giving me a boost to kick this habit. Although I do not have all the excess weight, YET, I want to get this under control before the weight piles on. Thank you so much for the tips, I am going home this evening and trying them all. I have read 100x to write in a journal and I have started to do it but never followed through, but today I am starting fresh! I am buying a small journal I can take with me everywhere and when I get the feeling of snacking for no reason I will start writing. I have got to figure this out!

I do believe it has something with being a lone because when I am at work I am not tempted by the junk food that the employees bring in. The candy is always near my desk and I could care less. A coworker brought in a HUGE chocolate cake and I have no desire to touch it but when I get home I will eat everything in my fridge no matter how healthy unhealthy the item is. I have gotten rid of most of the junk food but then in return will eat all of my healthy stuff in one setting.

Please keep the suggestions, tips, and support coming. I need it and you all have been a tremendous help!!!! Thank you so much!!!

my suggestion is clean your kitchen of all unhealthy and junk food. Fill your fridge with cut up veggies and lots of fruit. Go out and get a journal or writing book and when you feel like binging, then start writing and find out the trigger that is setting you off. Is it that you are bored, angry at someone, or something that happened or maybe being alone at night with nothing to do or no body to care. You will be surprised at how much comes out in those moments. If you can't think of anything, then just start writing anything and eventually you will write down your feelings and acknowledge them as ledigitment.

You sound like most of us, except we already have the weight on. Here's a trick that has worked for me. My over eating ALWAYS occures at night. I read that a calories a calorie regardless of when you eat it....therefore....I start my day with light calories like small amount of oats with an apple chopped into it. I only eat that when I'm hungry (which could be anytime in the morning) then at lunch I eat pilchards on a slice of seed loaf with lots of tomato and lettuce, onion etc and that I eat only when Im hungry..then at night I eat a rounded meal which includes potato/rice/pasta with some protein and LOADS of veggies and lastly before I go to bed I have low cal jelly with berries and with all that eating, I seldom end up over 1200 calories.
I also have a glass of cocoa made with milk when its cold.

I will NOT run emotionally from compliments and hide in fat layers for protection.

Play games online, or watch a movie, tv shows, anything to keep your hands and mind busy away from food. I do not live alone but that to me makes it that much harder for myself. I have three kids and a husband who loves junk food and has no problem eating or making junk food in front of me. I just work through it and take it one day at a time. I also chat on fb, play pogo games and read articles online if I am tempted to eat. You can also drink an 8oz glass of water everytime you think about eating and that should help fill you up more to where your not as tempted to snack, plus water is really good for your body,so its a win win situation. emoticon emoticon

I have struggled with gorging since I was 16. I was not strong enough to seek help until I was obese. Unfortunately, I have no words of wisdom. I just wanted to send some emoticon your way and say that I'm impressed you are able to recognize that you have a problem before it becomes a major issue!!

I wish I could help you. I am big time struggling as well. I may or may not be with depression.I do not know the signs yet, but I have been eating like crazy and someone thinks it is comfort eating and another thought that on Monday I was in the begining stages of depression.

My name is Brittany and I am REALLY struggling and need some serious help. I am 23 and have an emotional eating problem. I am not over weight but I afraid I will get that way if I don’t stop! I exercise vigorously in the morning, eat extremely healthy all day and I am feeling confident, THEN I get home (I leave by myself) and all of my hard work goes down the drain. I feel anxious and nervous and just eat everything I can get my hands on. 90% of the time what I eat is not necessarily “bad.” I try not to by unhealthy food knowing that the temptation is to great. But what ends up happening is that I will get to the point that I will eat dry cereal because I am craving foods so much. I will eat fruit, then vegetables, then I’ll have almonds, then yogurt and before you know it I have ate myself out of my house. HOW DO I STOP!?!?! The frustration and disappointment in myself is to great! I have tried every trick in the book. Journaling, chewing gum, brushing my teeth, leaving notes all over my house NOT to eat but I always fail. Can someone please help me?!? I am starting to fall into depression.
