At the same time, it's ok to not let people take advantage of you, which sounds like what this co-worker was doing.
My new supervisor at work was terribly impressed with his new position and didn't mind letting people know they were "under his thumb". I thought, "he's new, give him time to settle into the job." But it never changed. So I started calling him on things that he said had to be done "because it's in the policies and procedures". But it's true that what comes around goes around. Last Saturday he was pulled off the floor for verbal abuse!
