I so agree with you BKFIT about the marketing and big business thing. Most people seem to be getting their health "education" from magazine ads, food packaging and TV. Even most doctors get their cues about food and nutrition from these same sources in a kind of "back stage" way. But it's the same faulty information. Like; it is now known that we have become deficient in clean, pure saturated fats. Can you guess why??? But getting that information out to the general public is like trying to turn the Queen Mary around.

Even all the stuff we've been fed about the so-called correlation between cholesterol in food and heart disease is now being found out to be wrong. It seems like we've all been made to feel scared to eat just plain, good, real natural food by food manufacturers who can't make a profit on food unless it's been grossly manipulated in some way.

And YES, it's deplorable the way our meat, poultry and dairy animals are being treated. I won't even eat chicken or eggs unless I can get it from a source that I trust. And I am SOOO lucky to have a friend near by who raises their own beef so that is what is in my freezer.

Rant, rant, rant!
Eat WHOLE eggs (pasture raised, organic) and be healthy!

I think once or twice I've had a egg white only omelette; each time, I felt incredibly guilty for having to throw the yolk away. I am frustrated by the variety of mixed messages we are bombarded with on a daily basis through commercials. I believe it's all about marketing and big business which is why we are so confused. There is a lot of cover-up that we cannot begin to imagine.

Also, I tried to stop eating meat after I saw disturbing footage but gave up after I grew tired of eating tofu and beans. But I still feel guilty about eating chicken, etc. (I mostly just eat chicken rather than pork, beef, etc) - it's terrible what they do to those animals.

I think a lot of it has to do with a lack of empathy that is increasing in our society overall; as well as the fact that, as a modern society, we have become so detached from our food sources.

I eat the whole egg if they hard hard-boiled...
If I am just cooking eggs, I will usually use them whole. If I am very hungry, and I want to behave, I will have two whole eggs and then an extra egg white. Otherwise I think egg whites are just too... gelatinous! lol

Eggland's Best eggs is really a scam based on a factory farm's desire to make a profit from what they see as the "health-food" segment of the grocery industry. Don't be fooled.

Chickens aren't vegetarians only; they are omnivores and need to be on the ground to catch and eat buggies and worms (like most birds). A TRULY range-raised chicken LIVES out of doors on the natural ground and only comes in when the weather is very bad and to roost and to lay eggs in an airy but warm shed.

The term "free range" is useless legally as there isn't a good legal line drawn between factory farm egg production and "free range" egg production. Most "free-range" chickens live in a huge, very crowded (wall to wall) chicken barn with a door leading outside to a small, often cement-paved area so that the factory can claim "free-range" or "cage free".

These poor chickens are still treated in the most in-humane ways; having their beaks cut off, tossing the male chicks into plastic bags to suffocate or being thrown into a grinder while alive.

If you want healthy eggs and you are absolutely stuck with buying them from a grocery store, look for cartons that tell you that they are proud of keeping their chickens on the ground and that they are fed only organic chicken feed. Actually, life on the ground in the open air is more important than "organic" though "organic" is preferred.

Don't be swayed by pictures of happy chickens and grassy meadows on the carton. It's about as honest as the happy cows pictured on the cartons of Horizon milk products; another company that is just making money off the health-food industry using very questionable husbandry practices.

Our food choices will only become healthier as we, as consumers refuse to buy cheap, inhumane, toxic food stuffs. We truly vote with our wallets for the food we want.

And, I need to add: Eating egg whites apart from the egg is not healthy. It's just another false message about weight loss and health. As JOLENE says, "it's a packaged deal" and it truly is.

And, if I eat 2 egg whites instead of 1 whole egg then I am playing into the hands of marketers and egg producers by buying 2 eggs instead of 1!

Don't be led by the market; be led by your own heart and mind. Eat whole, real food.

I eat the whole egg, I figure there's a reason it comes as a package deal. I only buy eggland's range free eggs, and I always cook my eggs on medium-low or lower heat, for some reason anything higher always gave me a headache, and now thanks to aniduck, I know why! (-:

I'm also on the whole egg with additional egg whites. Ironically when I eat clean, I actually have to make more of an effort to get fats into my diet. I find the whole egg to tremendously help. I also echo the belief that a whole egg is technically the true form. :)

If you can find the book "Eat Fat and Lose Weight", you will read about the scientific reasons behind why what AniDuck says about fats and cholesterol is true.

And I also think that eating food that is as close to the way Mother Nature made it is the best thing for us. And I totally agree that we have skewed just about every food there is in this country. So I have to make the best decisions possible, given the world I live in, the time I have, and my availability to products. In the case of eggs, this usually means eating one yolk with several whites. Like FitHawg pointed out, it helps to keep my proteins high while still keeping my calories in check.

Everything in moderation is the key I think. Having too much of anything even if its good for you is bad - it is possible to drink too much water. Have both and try not to over analyze all your food. Probably have an aneurysm listening to what all the experts say about all our food - and they don`t agree to boot.

I definitely agree with you ANI, but sometimes it's hard to get all that extra protein without adding a lot of extra calories. Egg whites work great for that.
I like a whole egg with extra whites too...

There are so many myths and misunderstood ideas about eggs floating all over the place. For me, when considering the egg, I start with the most natural form and trust that nature/God has it right. I have read enough about the dangers of eating the white separate from the yolk to stay away from that. I have also read that the cholesterol problem, as it relates to eating eggs is mainly due to two things; cheap, conventional eggs and scrambled eggs. The former is bad from the get go and the latter is about what happens to cholesterol when it is exposed to high heat. I've read that eating the yolk soft and runny is the most healthful way to eat an egg. It's the way I've always liked it anyway.

Don't mess with nature I always say; man has shown us that when we try to change things we always create problems. Look at the salmonella scare recently!! That's about mass production of nutrient deficient eggs and chicken with illness to boot! Good eggs don't carry those diseases.

Ask yourself, what is your motive for eating egg whites apart from the yolk. Is it to reduce calories? So why eat eggs at all then if that's a big concern? I know why I don't lose my unwanted weight and it's not because I eat whole and sometimes raw eggs. Nope, it's because I love to eat too much and it's because I don't control my consumption of starchy carbs like bread, granola, potatoes and grains. Those are the things that cause weight gain.

If cholesterol is the reason you don't like the yolks then I beg you to do some research on that to find out what is behind the old, but handed down fears. There's a lot of new evidence that shows that eating things with cholesterol in them isn't as related to heart disease and stroke as we've been led to think. For most of us the problem is with an entirely bad diet of a lot of refined food-like substances devoid of nutrients and full of disease-causing elements.

Rant, rant, the old lady is going off again.
Remember: nature isn't out to get us; we are out to change nature. That is a shame. It's killing us and ruining the earth.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. I usually eat both. I will have 3-4 egg whites and 1 yolk. I feel there is value to eating a yolk. There are nutrients in the yolk that you may not be getting from other sources. Just my opinion.

I eat the whole egg for a variety of reasons. First, there are nutrients in the yolk. Secondly while I have high cholesterol, I am reading that your cholesterol is more a result of genetics than from the food that you eat. Of course, exercise helps with HDL. Also, I am not going to crack open an egg and throw half of it away.

I do buy the liquid egg whites and will use those, too, so I don't feel that you HAVE to eat the yolks, but for fresh eggs, I will eat the whole thing.

That is a difficult one, there is so much controversy out there surrounding eggs. 4 egg whites is a good idea, but I would occasionally eat the whole egg. I've heard now that they are finding out people who do not get enough cholesterol can be at risk for Alzheimer's. It is so confusing in this world of high-cholesterol hype.
Most of that comes from people eating bad trans-fats, but an egg is a good natural fat like nuts and avocados. I would say egg whites to pack that protein punch when you need it, but eat the whole egg maybe a couple of times a week. If the rest of your diet is low in bad fats than you should be fine. www.webmd.com/alzheimers/news/200806

Any opinions on whether or not to eat just egg whites or whole eggs? In my fitness books, the trainers almost always recommend egg whites. Sometimes a whole egg is incorporated into a recipe. Lately some friends have been telling me that I should really be eating the whole egg, but my goal in eating for example, 4 egg whites in my morning oatmeal is so I can ramp up my protein without all the extra "unnecessary" calories. I don't want to be missing out on vital nutrition, though. So is there a middle ground? What do you do?
