I almost always to weights first. I've always heard that's what you "should" do, but I just prefer it that way anyway.

Hi,
I do my cardio first for 20 to 30 minutes, then after each circuit or supersets, I do Jacks or jump rope or mountain climbers etc. for 3 to 5 minutes, then rest, then do next sets & cardio again of some kind. I read in 4 of my fitness magazines that this will burn more fat & calories. After I'm totally finished with my workout, I do a light impact aerobics for 15 to 20 minutes & then cool down & stretch. This way I always get both strength & cardio at the same time. It works well for me.
I also add Abdominal exercises in between.
each circuit.

Everyday is a new day, just think positive and take one day at a time.

I have to do cardio first before weights otherwise I won't get in the cardio. Bc I'm trying to build muscle, I'm supposed to do weights first, but I dread cardio after my weight sessions. By the time I'm done lifting, I'm out of steam and cannot muster up the strength for cardio.

It's been working for me, but I build muscle easily anyway.

Usually I do cardio and ST on separate days to get the full benefits of each. But...sometimes I'll do circuit training, which is a combo of both. Or I'll do ST earlier in the day and cardio later on the same day.

With my busy schedule, I only do one or the other. I do 45 minutes of cardio M/W/F and 45- 1 1/2 hours strength training on T/H/S. Sunday is my and God's day of rest. With my plan I want to to run 5k's next year with muscles!!

If you want to do both though, do the one you want the most energy for first. When I do cardio, I exert myself so I have nothing left for strength training afterwards.
Blessings,
Beth

I always do my cardio first - I feel it warms up my muscles and allows me to push them a little harder than if I do weights first...

Just keep saying - nine months up nine months down. (and I probably don't need to eat all of those cookies again)

I wish I could do weights before cardio because that's supposed to be the best way. But I love doing strength training and despise cardio, so I always make cardio a first priority. I find my best bet is to go for a long run to the gym and then do strength at the gym and then walk home. But I just happen to live close enough to the gym to be able to do that. Not everyone has that luxury.

When I ST I do circuits & super sets with very little to no rest in between...I then follow it up with 45 min of cardio.

I do whatever is more difficult mentally first. For me, that's cardio. I also feel like having a really good warm-up before weights helps me push harder with them. Normally I do 30 minutes of cardio, then lift, then 15 minutes more of cardio and stretch. I don't rest during weights (go straight from one exercise to another), so I keep my heart rate and calorie burn up.

Anxiety goes away once the decision is made. Why not make the decision that will take away the anxiety AND make me feel good?

Hi,
I warm up, then for 15 minutes I do kickboxing & 100 jacks, then I start my weight training. I workout at home now since my gym membership expired. I like working out at home.
I normally do circuits 3 exercises to each one, after each circuit is completed 3 sets of each, I do 5 or 10 minutes of cardio. Then before I start on another circuit, I do crunches (50), then continue & repeat the same format.
When I'm finished completely, I'll do 20 minutes more of cardio, crunches, Jacks or I walk or ride my bike. I'll follow this pattern 3x a week, the rest of the week I'll do just cardio, kickboxing or aerobics or bike riding. I also have some DVD'S I workout to, when the weather outside is terrible I'll follow the DVD'S.

On the days I go to the gym, I do cardio for 20min, complete my ST, and then finish with 30min of cardio.

On the day I don't go to the gym, I do ST in the morning and cardio in the evening. Being a SAHM I can manage this since I found it is easier to do ST with kids around. I can stop after a set and attend to them if need be whereas I couldn't do that with cardio and I was getting frustrated. I then do cardio when dh gets home.

I have been starting a routine where I split my cardio between weight training. I do a third of cardio before lifting, another between, and finish up with the last part of cardio. Does anyone else split their routine this way? It keeps me from being bored with long cardio routines.

Thank you both for your advice. I'm off to read the article.

Ah.. this great debate! Depends on what your goals are. But I prefer to do my hardest part of my workout first, which for me is strength, and also, by doing your cardio after lifting, your arteries are slightly hardened, and cardio looses them back up. I've read an article on SP about it as well. Let me see if I can dig up! =]

depends, what's your goal? Some say that you should do weights first, b/c that'll get rid of glycogen in your muscles, then you'll burn more fat when you do your cardio. But if you're fatigued form th weights, you won't be able to maintain your cardio as well, so you'll burn less calories. Just depends on what you want from your workout that day! :) Clear as mud, no?

Is it best to do weights followed by cardio or cardio followed by weights?
