My box does't say anything about aspartame. I get migraines from it. It has stevia. Maybe they've changed it.

Oh, looking back, you must have meant Raine. I didn't give you a link. I freaked out for a minute. I have to stay far away from aspartame.

When I did more research into the link I looked up from Nora's suggestion I saw that it actually has Aspartate, so I would skip that one and go with Hammer as suggested!

I lived on hammer gels when training for the 1/2 ironman. I like the chocolate and the espresso flavors. Eating the gels at full concentration was a bit much for me so I usually preferred to add it to one of my water bottles when out riding. I also kept one water bottle for plain water (always good in case of a crash, you can use it to clean out wounds in a pinch) and the other water bottle had hammer gel.

Check out Hammer Nutrition for your sports drinks and gels...they are the only company I have found that doesn't use HFCS or other "unclean" ingredients!!!

For my long runs, which are between 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours long, I use one gel packet before the run, sip on the HEED (Hammer Electrolyte Energy Drink) starting at about 30 minutes and every 15 minutes throughout the run, and another gel packet at about 1 hour!!!

I also drink 16 oz of plain water 1 hour before my run and immediately after my run!!!

Another option which was suggested by another member of this team was adding Agave to your water!!! I haven't tried it but it does seem like a good clean option!!!

Hope that helps!!!

Jackie!!!

I did a half ironman triathlon and had to play around a lot with figuring out nutrition. Depending on the length of your triathlon you will want to think about adding in nutrition to your training so that on race day you will be able to ingest the food and know it won't make you sick or work adversely. There are things like gels which are nice when running - very hard to get food into you while running - most things make me sick. But while biking it is possible to eat food. You can try bananas, granola bars (homemade so that you know they are clean)...raisins, nuts. Just some things I have used. There are also powdered mixes you can add to water that are formulated for recovery and for ingestion while training - but you need to check the labels carefully on those. But the "common" ones that you buy in a 7-11 are going to be full of more "crap" than what you might find in a good running store or online. I wasn't as careful about my eating when I trained for the half ironman so I don't know about how clean the things I ate are.

Good luck with your training and congratulations! Running for 20 minutes is hard and is quite an accomplishment! Way to go!

I have a product I have used called,
"Electro Mix". I got it at the health food store. It's made by Alacer Corp.

It comes in packets so it's easy to carry and you can just add it to your water bottle and shake it up.

This is what it says on the box...
Makes water into sports water...instantly.
Sodium Free...Calorie Free...Sugar Free
Potassium is by far the major element in the cell. Indeed, the healthy cell requires 20 times as much Potassium as Sodium. On the other hand the daily intake of Sodium is 10 to 38 time that actual requirement. thus, it is very important to get elecrolytes with extra Potassium, which can help to overcome the excess of Sodium iin most diets.

Electro-Mix, Lime Ingredients: Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese, Chromium, Natural Lime Flavor. Does not contain Sugar, Sodium.

PS..it's sweetened with stevia and it's lemon/lime flavored

I just bought an electrolyte enhanced bottle of water from trader joes. I am assuming it is the same as gatorade without the sugars and colors but I could be wrong. I have not tried it. It was 69 cents and it was about the size of the Gatorade that is $1.50. I gave it to my son in law who works out quite a bit and has some stomach issues so he should not be drinking the sugary stuff.

Alright folks, I need your help. I am working on Eating Clean more consistently and have been doing an OK job. I am training for my first 5K and will be taking swimming lessons soon to prep for training for a triathlon next year. This weekend, I did my longest run yet for my 5K training (I ran 20 minutes without stopping - might not seem like a long time but I am not a runner so it was not easy). Then after I was done I went out on my bike for almost an hour. I ate an hour before my run but I did not eat between the run and the bike ride and at the end of the bike ride I almost passed out.

As I am sitting on the grass with my head between my knees trying desperately to not pass out, I knew I needed some nutrients in me since I had not eaten. I had water but it was back at my car and I knew I needed more than just water. Gatorade or something along those lines came to mind but I know Gatorade has HFCS in it so that is out of the question. I can't think of anything else that would accomplish the same goal but not have too much sugar in it. So I am reaching out to my Clean Eating friends for help in finding a clean sports drink. This bike and run scenario will happen more as I start training for my triathlon. Thanks in advance for your help.
