Thanks for the great information. Most of what I currently take aims at helping my knees. I just read Tosca's book the other week and have been debating whether or not to try some of this out. I think y'all have convinced me to... Well minus the bee pollen b/c I'm allergic to those suckers!

I like the spirulina, I make a smoothie with lots of ice, spirulina and whatever fresh fruit I have on hand. I've learned to like the taste, but it took a while!

I got the pills from GNC--their brand. I take them 30 mins before each meal, as this apparently improves their efficacy. Somehow they keep fat from being stored in adipose tissue. Whatever that means exactly, I'm not sure, but "keep fat from being stored" sounds good to me.

I do also take the spirulina and maca. Maca does give me lots of energy. Not sure about the spirulina yet. When you open the bottle it smells like a dirty fishtank. Blech

JANDZMOM: Curious, what brand of CLA do you take and how much? I am taking Vitamin World brand of CLA Tonilin and it it 78% CLA.

CLA...
I started taking it before I started eating clean (we had a quick 4 day vacation) and I still lost weight (we ate JUNK). I have not been exercising regularly, and I'm losing size (not weight) fairly quickly. It's mistifying in a way.

Now that the kids are back in school I plan on exercising consistently. Hopefully my results will improve even more!

sorry it took me so long to respond, crazy day.

Yes, more definition, but also I could feel muscle a lot sooner than I expected. I had just started strength training and didn't expect results that quickly. It's almost like the CLA takes body fat and converts it to muscle?? It sounds crazy, but I don't know how else to describe it. Like I said the scale didn't reflect any changes but my clothes fit differently. My face got thinner, but my legs had more muscle. Weird, huh??

BTW, I mentioned I had just started the spirulina powder and it was too soon to tell if it was helping? I think it's helping. I had a lot more energy that last couple of days and that's the only thing I've done that's different.

What do you quite mean about the CLA changing your body composition? Do you mean you could see more definition?

If you haven't been eating clean long, you may not have hit what I call the "gassy phase". When and if you do, stick with it. It can last a while and almost made me give up in the beginning. It's just your body making the adjustment. But it's a good way to clear the room if you need a little alone time!

If this happens, you could try taking probiotics for a while until it settles down. Good for intestinal health or anytime your body is under extra stress.

I just started with eating clean last week. I had a couple "bad days" b/c we ran out of healthy stuff real quick this week. It also takes a lot of planning, so I am trying to get in the habit to plan what I eat. This is a big thing for me as my old habits were that I would forget to eat or not have enough time, then when it came down to it I would stuff myself. So, baby steps. My 1st clean eating goal is to eat clean 80% of the time. Then when I can maintain that, I will inch it up to 90%, etc.

Whenever I see bee pollen it seems to be refrigerated. I don't know if it's like that at Whole Foods though. (Closest one for me is 3 hours away, boo) It seems like whenever I get back into taking supplements I start to not feel so great. I think it's just too many pills for me. I do think the omega type pills are good though. Wish they would make those pills in smaller sizes though.

believe it or not, with my long winded post, I forgot to mention that I have also recently added Spirulina to my diet. It's new so I don't know if it's helping yet. I bought the powdered form and make a simple smoothie with a little fruit.

Warning - LONG POST!

My day (for supplements) goes like this:

B'fast time - CLA , calcium, lutein (for my eyes), maca, multi vitamin, vitamin c

Lunchtime - CLA, calcium, maca

Dinner time- CoQ10, borage oil (GLA)

The CLA and GLA need to be taken at least 3 hours apart, it has something to do with absorption rates.

I split my CLA, maca, and calcium into 2 doses because it's a lot of things to take all at once.

The holy basil tea I have anytime during the day. Bee pollen I typically have with breakfast, along with my flax and wheat germ. I also drink green tea fortified with guarana throughout the day.

You're right to start out gradually. I've heard a lot of people complain about getting stomache aches from some of these supplements, but I added everything very gradually and have had no problem whatsoever. If you're adding bee pollen, be sure you don't have an allergy to bees/bee products! If you're not sure, try adding it your diet in tiny little amounts in the beginning and increasing gradually.

Be prepared, I did notice my body changed when I started taking the CLA. Apparently it is known to change body composition. My weight didn't change, my measurements did. But I also started doing strength training at the same time, so who knows...... I did start developing muscle faster than I thought it would happen. Could just be that I'm weird!!

I have to tell you, this past week has been not good for me and I neglected a lot of things I normally do. I gained 6 pounds in one week. blecccchhh. Why does it take twice the work to take it off that it does to put it on in the first place? It really does not take long.

How often do you eat clean? I'm at about 90 - 95%, aiming for 100% with a once a week treat (Ihave a serious weakness for these gluten free vegan brownies they make at the local health food store!!)

When I get lazy a couple of days in a row with my eating, I get headaches and I'm extremely irritable (just ask my kids!)

I recently came across some information that indicated when taking CLA you need to also take sesame lignans and guarana to maximize absorption, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

I was thinking of adding the CLA too. Do you also take the GLA? I was going to get started with the Holy Basil tea, the Maca, and CLA first then go from there.

Good Morning MEB0810, I use the Maca Sure Vegicaps made by Sequel. You want to look for gelatinized pure Peruvian Maca Root Extract. This particular brand is fair trade which made it stand out for me.

The capsules have 750 mg of maca and I take 4 capsules daily, 2 at breakfast, 2 at lunch.

I take a once a day Multi Vitamin (Jamesons Vita Slim). I don't do anything half way so I researched how much of each nutrient I needed daily, checked to see what I might be getting from my diet, wrote everything down and went shopping. Obviously you don't want vitamin overload when you're taking so many different things.

ALSO, if you're looking at taking CLA and GLA (borage oil, evening of primrose, etc) you need to take them 3 hours apart or you could have a problem with absorbtion.

STUMBLES: do you use the Maca powder, pills or tea?

TTHOMPSON0031: they should have bee pollen at the whole foods store. I noticed that they had it in the organic section of our grocery store too. So you may want to check there as well.

TO ALL: What multivitamins do you use? I saw some in the organic section that were for the "active women", but you had to take 6 pills per day. Seemed like a lot.

Please tell me that I can find bee pollen at Whole Foods! I was there for the first time last week, and I must have missed it somehow! I was pretty fascinated by the options, so I could have very well missed it!

Hi MEB0810, I use bee pollen, CLA, holy basil tea, maca, flaxseed, CoQ10. I bought creatine but haven't started it yet. I've been dealing with some kid stuff and haven't been exercising for the past week. Once I'm back at the gym and back into strength training again, I'll start the creatine. The loading and maintenance phases are a little daunting as I already take a lot of other supplements.

I definitely noticed improvement when I started the flax seed and bee pollen. With the other supplements, when life gets in the way and I neglect to take them I don't have anywhere near the energy so I guess they are helping. It's just more of a subtle thing I guess.

Tosca writes about bee pollen being delicious but I haven't found that to be the case *shrugs*. But I still take it for the benefits it provides.

BTW the holy basil tea is actually really tasty. I have mine with just a touch of honey. The brand I buy is BIJA by Flora but I'm sure there are many others. Hope that helps.
