Isn't this a great thread! :) Always count your blessings and happy things!

I'm so glad to hear about the power zone workouts... and that we are all feeling powerful in 2008! Keep that mantra alive.

That fat feeling...that focus on feeling fat and having that darn scale remind us. NO you can't carry it with you silly girl :)

Sigh. I'm so glad I ditched it. I did however sneak in a weigh in at a friends over the week-end. I dropped five pounds! I keep asking him if his scale was correct :)

I didnt' need to be told by the scale. I just knew I looked better. Confirmed by the scale.

So... I'm back in black but still VERY happy to have let it go (the scale). I seriously think the stress of it, the pressure gone allowed me to let go of some cortisol. No lie. :) A random, maybe monthly check in is okay but I avoided it for a very long time. Why bother during the Holidays. The Holidays are a happy time. Scale was not invited to attend any of my special Holiday events. It doesn't bring gifts anyway. It's like scrooge. Lame ugly scale. :)

So...... anyhoooo....yesterday I ate half a dozen cookies. What can I say, they were home made? Despite that I ate VERY healthy as usual.

Darn grandma types sending me away with all those morsels!

:) They were great with tea. They are also small and dainty...so I figured about 600 calories for the lot. Ah well. I'm posting a pic oon my blog just to show you how irresistable they are!

:) Life is GOOD!

WOW what an awesome thing to be able to do lose the scale. There are times i may as well drag it with me. lol
So theres another goal I will weigh in only on Mondays ONLY !!!
That is great for me cos I still feel the need to see the numbers go down as i am just starting over again. Once i get to where I can see the clothes fitting better and some difference then I agree it wouldnt be as important to me.
So HUGE KUDOS to you for ditching it and I promise you and ME I will weigh in on Mondays only!

Exactly, John. There are so many other factors that encompass total wellness. I personally KNOW I look better with a few added pounds.

For most women, the scale is such a huge part of their journey. I'm simply hoping to rally against the importance of it...and see where it takes me... and those who jump in.

I know there are women out here who need to lose a tremendous amount of weight. And I can see why losing 20-100 or more pounds would be quite an accomplishment and you'd need to track it.

But at some point you have to let go and trust yourself. I truly beleive the number on the scale can set so many women back. It's just plain devastating to read those numbers. Then you have to hit reset and Lord knows how long it takes so many of us to RESET.

Anyhow.. my tiny rant. I can't wait to post my progress minus the scale. I'll be doing so just before I leave for vacation in Feb (my big 40th)

:)

Have I mentioned how LIBERATING this is? It is astoundingly and shockingly liberating. It's somewhat surreal too.

I like it.

Ah yes...

The scale doesn't really bother me, because I don't use it very often. When it told me I was at my goal weight, I wasn't particularly happy with what I saw. I am my own critic and can decide if things are where I want them to be just by looking in the mirror and feeling how my clothes are fitting. Then there are health indications, like blood pressure, respiration, cholesterol level, etc.

If I'm ok with the above, then I could care less about the scale. I just don't think it's the most relevant yardstick for measuring my progress.

Hey Monica,

Nice to meet you. And now look who's talking gross with thepoop.

But yes, if most of us had a balanced out look about or own self image, we probably wouldn't even be here or at least spending soooo much time here, right?.

:) Hard to say.

I hear you, though. I have not been overweight all my life, but early on in my teens I felt the pressure of being model thin, and I worked ono it! (remember the Jane Fonda vidiot craze??) I was rail thin and always mindful of it.

I blame society and the media...
I've talked with so many young girls on this very site have eating disorders because of the pressure. It's terribly wrong and sad and I can only do my own part in trying to help....

Now I won't deny my own responsibility as well as the fact that I still participate in finding the fountain of youth once in a while.

:) The difference now is that I love my body and my curves more. So eliminating behaviors that were self defeating is the right step. It's like walking away from an addiction, really. That can't be a bad thing, right?

Any good trainer will tell you NOT to weigh. Period.

ahhhhh Friday. Are we happy today?

Hahaha! Oh that made me laugh. You're gross, SkinnyPup, I love it.

I feel like maybe I have a bit more of a balanced attitude when it comes to the scale than some of you must... I'd like to think that's from being overweight since childhood and being forced to discover that there's more to life than weight (and thus, more value to oneself than the scale can measure). Ahh, doesn't that sound nice? LOL!

There are moments where I get that weird scale mentality... "maybe if I have my morning poo and then step on the scale again, I'll see a lower number..." but have I lost weight? No! Just poo! That whole warped brain thing (which is pretty pooey in itself, by the way) only gets me once in a while though, and as long as I can beat that voice into submission, I'm on pretty good terms with my little flat plastic bathroom box.

For now, anyway. emoticon

A healthy, balanced lifestyle is a continual process of climbing back onto that slippery proverbial wagon. Giving up isn't an option.

No one can go back in time and make a brand new start, but anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.

SKINNYPUP - you are my idol! What you are doing is so great and in my opinion brave. LOL I hope to get there someday. I know I should do it now but I am not ready. I have changed my goals to losing fat not weight but until further mental progress takes place, I won't be able to lose the ticker. But, WAY TO GO!!! emoticon

Goodness, I didn't mean to make you feel bad.

No No No.

What you said in your original post is right on. You look good, and by societies numbers, size 3/4 whatever...you should mentally already be there.

It's the scale and those other digits... even age screws with our heads :)

When I said, think about that I meant really, think deeply about that and how bad it really is.

:) Dont' feel bad. Feel great. You look great and you know it.

Now ditch the scale!!! :)

I know it's a big step to ditch the scale...and I'm glad to see a few 'maybes'...

at least you are thinking seriously about the damage it causes on our souls.

For me, it's not important enough to risk true happiness and bliss.

If I want or NEED to weigh in, I'll wait a month and do so at the gym.

There are plenty of places for this. I just don't need it at home, the one place I love being... :)

Have a super Holiday people!

Oh, and Noreen- I too am considered smaller by societies standards (6) and heading off to a 4.

I no longer like talking about those numbers out loud. I think it makes others feel bad about themselves. Think about that!!!

I will no longer discuss my weight or pant size with any of my friends. Never!!!

Besides... when I'm fit and toned I've looked good in size 10 too (at 160 pounds!!!) And that's what I will encourage to them.

That is my goal change for no. 3 of 2008. Forget weaning myself off the scale. I'm trading it up for encouraging people to ditch the scale AND love their bodies!!!

Start a revolution and love your body!!!

Hey ladies ... One thing I'd like to share with you is "staying out of the gap". The gap is that negative space where we play head games and beat ourselves up for not making a goal as fast as we'd like. Instead, of looking out at the goal, turn around and look at where you've come from. Go back through the journey and think about all the things you've overcome, the days you dragged yourself to the gym when you didn't feel like it, the great choices you've made and all the other wonderful things you've done to get to where you are. Progress - not perfection. This is your head messing with you because it is not having any fun right now because you're doing so well and it wants to cause trouble. Don't let it. You are great. Heck size 3/4 or 5? Maybe when I was in third grade! LOL!! Put on some nice clothes, make up and do your hair and go out there an dazzle the world. You are awesome and a scale is not the only measure of your success. Heck, half the time they aren't right anyway!

Love to all,

Noreen

Skinny Pup---- I LOOOOOOOVE what you have posted... I feel like hugging you woman!! You are so right.... I swear its like you read my mind. I am two pounds away from my "goal" its 4:30 am! and I wake up thinking of ways of getting rid of those two just in time for the new years.... Yes! Talk about obssessed. I am losing sleep to this garbage! I honestly feel that the scale those stupid digits are really messing with me... I recently blogged how I fit in size 3/4' and 5's. I havent been in those size jeans since High School! Yet b/c a wretched number does not go to my favor I am not satisfied! It frustrates me so much b/c I KNOW I too can ditch the scale.... But the fear of regressing back to how I was is often so strong that I let the object sitting in my bathroom dictate my happiness. When it shouldn't..... My new goal.... is overcoming that thought, tossing it and continue eating clean, exercising, and accepting me!

Wow! I read the whole thing and give you big ups for being able to do that! I too am a number freak. I've been living and mostly dying by the scale for YEARS! One of my problems is that I see myself bigger than I am, and I know this because people have been telling me that I don't need to lose any more weight and that I look great. Me being me, I find it all hard to swallow. I think that if I can just get down to "that number" then everything will be fine. Maybe I can get there too someday.

I've seen people using their trackers as counters or count-downs for other goals: miles run, minutes exercised, calories burned. It doesn't have to be counting pounds if you don't want it to!

Congrats on quitting the scale! When I get a little closer to my goal body, I'll do the same... for now, it's still a pretty good indicator. I'm looking forward to trading in for a tracker counting my miles run!

A healthy, balanced lifestyle is a continual process of climbing back onto that slippery proverbial wagon. Giving up isn't an option.

No one can go back in time and make a brand new start, but anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.

Way to go on letting go of the scale. I too have been discouraged by the numbers on that and feel that it holds me back. I am not weighing myself like I use to -- it is not calling my name as much anymore.

You are so funny! Quiet in the AM??

Get that brat up! :)

Have a great day kids. Work is soooo slow and dull but I have to give it another go, otherwise the guilt kicks in.

I know. There should be a wellness thread on Guilt, too :)

We need to start that revolution Noreen...

Lose the tickers and the numbers... it's pressure that is binding- suffocating!

I DID sign up intending to lose 25 pounds. I thought I'd feel better after losing it.

It turns out that I was so wrong. The journey to complete wellness is what makes me happy. Truly.

:) I feel liberated. Life is good.

Hey Skinnypup! I blogged on this about a month ago. Same crappy feelings and then I let 'em go!! It feels wonderful.

Since then, great things have happened. I dropped another pant size, can tuck in my shirt and wear a belt. Besides the unbelievable amount of energy ... whew! I can't stop!

I went back to why I started this in the first place and I suggest you do that. You ARE feeling better so put it AWAY!

Thanks dear. When I ranted about turning 40 in Feb- your little reply helped too.

I hate the numbers- the age too.

I have subscribed to the belief that you can slow aging and that your chronological numbers don't necessarily match your real age.

I got off track of that belief for awhile, too.

Good bye digits!!!

Great decision on ditching the scale. Just don't throw it, like my wife does!

ditching the scale, once and for all. I'm blogging on this later. For now I vent my frustration here, thus giving it the big final middle finger!!!

I've given it careful thought and with much pressure from the personal trainer, I have to agree -- It's stupid AND it's making me miserable.

I've had it with those digits! They rarely make me happy! Do they consistently make you feel good or is it more often that they make you feel bad???

Really. Think about it!

I know that I look fantastic, and I feel even better. My fat is giving way to beautiful muscle tone, so why do I let the numbers control me...and ruin a good day?

They always, always, always tell me I'm not good enough or skinny enough or working hard enough.... despite the fact that I am, and that I feel different.

So clearly this is not healthy for me...and you...
Can you people hear what I'm saying?

The digits scribed by society are designed to bring you down.

The pressure is unnecessary and not constructive as well as annoying and distracting!

Heck, people are generally surprised to hear my weight after taking a good look at me. That makes me happy. Moving the belt up a notch tells me I'm doing fine. Loose fitting clothes do the same.

And that is enough. That right there, just checking my belt should be all the energy afforded to the big "weigh in".

That's it! No (more)weekly weigh ins. No posting goals with digits on the calendar. It's too much pressure.

Consistency in eating and exercise is what makes me happy. Though once I feel strong and see inches wane ... I get on that scale - and it never fails. I feel discouraged, no matter how much I've learned....or succeeded. Suddently, I've failed.

I can't do it anymore. I've decided to lose the standards that society has dumped on my shoulders. It's like I'm living a lie my whole life. It's a lie I've bought into and it causes eating disorders in our young girls.... I bought into this!

My shoulders are tired of the fight. I'm unburdoning myself of this horrible weight... I'm putting the scale down.

I'm eating clean and I've never felt so balanced nutritionally.

- my mind is active.
-I sleep better.
-Clothes fit better.
-I'm walking taller
- I feel young and vibrant
- I simply feel healthy and smile a lot

These are tremendous changes and I'm forever grateful to have come this far this year. So...

the digits..the weigh in...it only adds distraction and pressure that I don't need or want.. You know, it's like that crummy relative that always points out the negative in your life. (sound familiar?)

This team is about elinating toxins and replacing them with healthy alternatives, right?

Well, I clear away from negative folks so I'm doing the same with the scale. It's gotta go. I'm leaving it where it belongs- at the doctors office.

Goodbye to you too, ticker!

emoticon see me pedal far away from it! :) emoticon

Thanks for letting me vent!
