I do a lot of exercise. I've built up to it. It doesn't take long for your body to do more. I ran 40 minutes yesterday although I told myself that I would only do 20 when I headed out. I decided to start a 16 week intermediate training schedule since I did so badly on my first 5K.

I'm running for fitness. However, it's more than that. I miss running on the days that I don't run. I also make excuses to ride my bike at least once most days. Exercise gets in your blood. It's so easy to get addicted to exercise.

I hurt my knee, not badly, but I put it on my blog and everyone told me to rest it. I can't. I can avoid doing squats that irritate it, but not to run. Never. The knees isn't so bad that I even need to ice it. It just hurts when I strain it while exercising.

Maintenance range. 127 to 132.

Yea...don't do too much too soon. Build it up. I started in January at 20 min aday...Now I can cardio for 90 or more a day and I ST for 40-60 min 5 times a week.

Just start then re-examine your progress every 4-6 weeks.

I hiked with my buddy on Monday for about 45 min-hour... then ST lower body.
I biked for 40 min today then ST upperbody for 45 min.

Hi all, newbie here...

My fitness goals are still at the beginning compared to you industrious souls, but I'm just starting. I'm amazed at those of you who love to run!! I do 45 min walk a day, twice if I can, and I'm going to incorporate swimming again in two weeks, after I'm out of the 'Fast Break' stage. I'm not sure I could ever love to run...!

But I do love swimming, I could swim and swim and swim, and if I didn't have to come up for breath, I'd be just that much happier. I also notice that when I eat clean, my morning swim (which I haven't done regularly in years) was soooo much more productive. And racing in the pool with a team is very satisfying for my competitive streak, even when I get STOMPED by 70 year olds.

HIITs sound like a great idea, when I get to that point, but it's still a long way off...

Guess I'd have to learn to love running if I ever want to do a mini-tri like SKINNYPUP suggested way back in the beginning of this thread. I'll swim the watery bits for you, if you run the land bits for me! haha

I just finished mapping out my new training plan for upcoming races this summer.

I will run 4 times a week and ST 2 times a week.
The new challenge will be to get a Yoga session in 4/5 times a week to compliment my running.

Keeping my fingers crossed to keep this schedule up.

Okay, let me explain the mowing, lol. I am not mowing the same grass everyday. I have a large back yard that I use 2 days to mow and 1 day to mow the front so right now I am mowing about 3-4 days a week. AND I have to keep telling everyone that I WANT to (I have 5 teenagers) because they comment on why my teens don't do it.
My husband wants to get a riding lawn mower but I am happy. It isn't self-propelled either. Our old fashioned manual mower finally broke or I'd use that. It would take me all week to mow with it! I haven't thrown it out yet...maybe I can get it fixed.

I'm up to running 30 minutes straight 3 or 4 times a week. I also bike for crosstraining. I do about 90 minutes on the bike at an easy pace 5 days a week. I try to get in some strength training upper or lower body work 4 to 6 times a week.

I really love the biking. It's great to be outside and it's a good way to travel. I have driving and with the gas prices and cost of car repairs, it's nice to have another way to get to the store. The grocery is about 4 miles away so that's a nice bike about 20 minutes each way at a slow pace. I also just ride bike just because it's so much fun. However, having a means to travel that doesn't cost as much doesn't suck.

Maintenance range. 127 to 132.

I am with ya Betta13 - 30 min a day minimum - usually I hit 60 or more. I began working my new goal last week - riding my bike to work for 8.6 miles and home for 8.6 miles - that is a total of 17.2 miles a day and approximately 90 minutes of cardio split into early morning and after work. I like that I do cardio twice a day and I get out on the lake front trail to come to work and go home. What a great way to work cardio in - and get out of the gym on those days! I am loving this so far!

I like to set streaks for myself then try to break the previous streak for cardio. I have gotten up to 20 days before but my MUST is 6 x a week.

I aim for 5 x a week on ST. I am finding more and more awesome exercises on SP! I alternate upper, lower, and core ST.

My cardio MUST is 30 min a day but I usually get more. Mowing is almost a once a day event, biking I try to get out at least 6 x a week. Walking, stair climbing, hiking or a gym machine are my usuals.

I love cardio -- I run on a treadmill 5 x week for 60 minutes. I'm up to 6.5 miles. I'd go longer, but I have to work!

I do weights 5 x week, alternating upper and lower body. I use machines and free weights.

I printed off all the SP exercises, and I mix it up using those.

I play tennis (singles) 2-3 times a week. I play golf 1 x per week, but on a cart, which is considered exercise, but I have a hard time believing it!

I get up and go to the gym before work, 5 days a week. I jog on the treadmill for 40 min Mon, Wed, and Fri in addition to the different weight workouts I do on those days. Tuesday and Thursday I do an interval training that's called Maximum Intensity Training. It's four minutes at a moderate pace and then 30 seconds of maximum intensity. I do that for six reps on either a stationary bike or an elliptical and then I do 10 minutes on a gazelle machine(only because it's my favorite machine). I just recently started this routine and my energy level has gone way up and my regular jogs have gotten easier and my speed has increased. If you've never tried interval training, I definitely recommend it. My little tummy pooch is all but gone!!

I really like working out outside. But most of the week I have limited time, so it's the gym and the cardio machines for me. On weekends I'm almost always outside for at least one workout.

I've been trying to get in at least 3-4 days of cardio a week, and 1-2 days of ST and a day of yoga. I get some HIIT on the stepmill, it has a nice interval program, so I don't have to think about it too much, but my HRM shows a nice graph of the intervals.

During the week I'm working out at the gym and I have a trainer once a week so I get in that ST. On weekends it's something outdoors, skiing in the winter, trail running, hiking or mtn biking in the summer.

I guess I'm doing the weekly workouts to bolster the weekend activity, I try to taylor my workouts to the activity for the weekend, my trainer will give me exercises to enhance the skiing in the winter, and climbing in the summer. So far so good, and switching it up frequently keeps it fresh and interesting.

Good for you LILLIAN. I have the yucky crud and can't breathe so I am staying home another day so I don't infect everyone at the gym, lol. Bummer for me. I will do some strength training later though because I do that at home.

I bought a Ipod yesterday so I had to try it out. Today is my day off from training for the c25K. I forgot to bring my timer when I ran so I just ran. I did over 40 minutes. I can't believe I jogged the whole time. I'm only up to five minute runs on my c25K training plan. I don't know how far I ran, but I ran the whole time. It felt amazing.

Calorie cycling or zig zagging your calories is basically the same thing. Generally you would eat a higher calorie day on your strength training days and eat lower calorie on your non-strength training days.

When I was trying out running (I was doing the Couch Potato to 5K challenge) I had sore hips. I think it was a combination of the shoes and running on concrete. I had to stop running because I would get chronic shin pain. Even with a change of shoes that an expert helped me pick, I still developed pain in my shins after a period of thime.

Hey...quick question. After your first couple runs, were your hips sore? I can barely walk they are so sore. I am not doing my 2nd run tonight, but am doing it for sure tomorrow.

Just want to give a shout out to those of you doing the couch to 5K plans. Excellent progress. You never know where it might lead if you keep it up. Four years ago I did a couch to 5K and in just 10 days I run my fourth Marathon, The London(UK) Marathon.

Keep up the awesome running!

The inspiration here is intense. I'm doing the couch to 5k running plan. I'm on week 3. I'm still at the FastBreak stage of SP. I've been watching my diet and exercising since February 5th. I'm so excited about the first signs of definition on my body. My bf is going to have to take pictures of me when swimsuit season is among us.

I do Joyce Vedral's Definition workout. I walk on most days that I don't train for the run, not that I expect to actually compete in a 5k run.

Lifting weights two months and I can see the barest lines on my thighs, shoulders, side and middle abdominals. I'm very excited about the potential after I reach goal weight and able to run more than only five minutes at a stretch.

Well, I just did WO #1 of Jillian's new DVD this morning. It was very good! However, I have a question: are we to do this for 30 consecutive days or alternate days for 30 days? I am just curious how some of us who bought the DVD are planning to do the workout?

Suggestions Please!

I think HIIT workouts are only supposed to be done 2-3 days a week, but not absolutely sure.

I am going to look for the Jillian Michaels DVD. I love her! Does anyone have the Biggest Loser DVD's. I have the cardio one and the sculpting one. The cardio is pretty intense. Haven't tried the sculpting one yet.

I think I am doing the HIIT too. I set the ellipical for intervals low inclines for about 2-3 minutes then full (level 20)incline for 2-3 min, and so on for about 45 min. I do this each day. Is this too much? I am not following any advice from anything but just trying to mix up my workouts so it doesn't get boring and I am always trying to outdo myself. Then I do intervals on the bicycle for another 15-20 min or I go to the rowing machine.

I saw the advertisement for this DVD yesterday and wondered the same thing. It has to be good though.

Ladies, I am not sure if you know it or not, but Jillian Michaels from the Biggest Loser has a new DVD out titled Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. Has anyone purchased this and tried it out. I already have her first of DVDs and those workouts are no joke. I am thinking about getting the new one as well. So, if someone has it, can you please let me know what you think?

Sincerely,

Stevie

Jan: Thanks for sending your post to me in a sparkmessage. I don't always check the threads like I should, so sparkmail is always the best way to get a hold of me. :)

Steph: WOOHOOO!!! HIIT is usually the only cardio I do, unless I just feel like doing a mild brisk walk or something. Don't forget to put 24-48 hours rest between your HIIT sessions. They are intense and need recovery time just like a strength training session needs recovery.

Great job everybody!!

Ladies,

I fulfilled my commitment to do the HIIT for 3 days this week. This is truly awesome. I cannot wait to do it again for 3 days next week!

Day #2 for HIIT on the elliptical! No, my pace is not the same, because of the resistance. This is a great workout. Once, I get the elliptical HIIT down packed, I am going to try Kim's suggestion of doing a HIIT on the stepper!

OK - at the risk of sounding pretty stupid, doing HIIT on the elliptical - is your pace about the same, just your resistance is higher?

I am just recovering from knee surgery (meniscus) and am working on building an exercise plan for my rehab and beyond. Previously I would just throw on the ipod, jump on it and go like he$$ on manual at level 1. I am attempting to boost up my training a bit, but I still have a lot of weight to lose. So I guess part of my confusion is, is it better for me to go like crazy with no resistance or better to have to slow the pace to work against the resistance?

Also - KIM - I noticed in the work out you have posted on your Sparkpage (the 5 day and repeat one) that there are only 5-8 exercises and the cardio. Please, that sounds like I am saying "only" and I am not, just trying to get an accurate picture of what a workout for someone who has come as far as you have consists of. How long does that work out take you? I have tried to copy it and the ST only takes me about 30 minutes. How much time do you spend on an average workout? Now I am not talking about "preparing" for anything - just a good - "I wanna get to goal weight and be physically fit" type workout.

Thanks for your time.

Oh, and when you are really up for a challenge...try that HIIT on the Stair stepper! I did it today: Level 8 to Level 19.

Oh, my heavens...

I did 38 minutes today of HIIT on the elliptical And it was awesome. Also, I guess I am stronger than I thought. I actually did a higher level than I originally plan. I also attempted level 20 on my last minute blast and actually did it. I am quite proud of myself and cannot wait until Wednesday to do it again!

I do not change the incline at all during my HIIT. My elliptical doesn't have that feature anyways...

Urbanmommy,

Thank you for the suggestion. I will create a HIIT for the elliptical tomorrow! I know level 20 will kill me! emoticon

So, I will make some adjustments! Also, do you do this with an incline or not?

Thank you again for the suggestion and advice. I will keep you posted!

I perform HIIT on the elliptical ALOT! And I love it because of my knees (and the fact that running sometimes makes me lose...ahem...my water. ;) Birthing issues, I suppose.)

Here's what I'm doing on the elliptical:

2 minutes @ level 8
1 minute @ level 20

Repeat that interval 8-10 times.

It's tough, but it's fun. Adjust your levels to your own fitness level.

Just a sidenote: I love HIIT!! After tons of research and my own personal experience, I can tell you it is the greatest type of cardio to do to maximize fat-loss. If you are training for endurance, HIIT is not for you. But if keeping your hard earned muscle and looking beautifully defined is your goal, then do it!! Remember that HIIT requires recovery time, just as you need recovery during your weight training sessions. HIIT utilizes the anaerobic system v. the aerobic system, so give you body at least 24 hours in between each HIIT session.
