I can not (honestly!) remember when the last time I had a soft drink. My family knows me so well when we go out to eat and the waitperson asks for drink orders, they always order it for me. Ice water with lemon! They even now to order the lemon!

I don't drink much soda, and when I do it is diet anyway. The regular stuff is just way too sweet for me. My main habit is coffee. I have made the switch to skim milk in it, with Splenda, so I can keep the calories pretty low, even if I hit about three cups a day. I just fully enjoy the flavor of coffee, and stopped drinking it just for the caffeine boost ages ago, lol.

It didn't really shock me about the amount of calories saved if you cut out soda. That stuff is so loaded with sugar calories it isn't funny.

My normal for soda for years has been one (diet) on Sunday when I'm at church counting money but lately it's gotten to be a bit more than that.
My numbers have been in range all week though I haven't been doing the cooking required in the program. I spend time in the afternoon planning what I need to eat to get all the protein and carbs without all the fat. Seems to be working although yesterday I had too many calories that were fat free but not healthy. I need to fix that today. Now it's off to mow the yard for my daily exercise.

I don't drink soda at all. Sparkling water with lime and lemon slices is my favourite thing to drink, along with herb tea and coffee with agave nectar. OH - and wine but I'm trying to limit that to twice a week and two glasses only when I have it. Not easy for me. LOVE WALLAHALLA's suggestion about lemon juice and frozen fruit in water. Will definitely be trying that. Day 12 went well - good food choices even though I was out to dinner - masses of chicken salad. Did the cardio on my stationary bike and as I've pretty well stopped using my car due to my new obsession with NEAT I also did a lot of walking. Am pretty pleased with my progress towards better habits over the past two weeks.

I haven't drank regular soda since my son was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 11 years old he's now 26!! I do drink diet soda, but can also get along fine without it! My favorite drink is plain old water... some days I drink 20 plus glasses... today I didn't drink near that many, as I was too busy moving furniture out of our main living room so we can lay new carpet... lots of exercise... washing walls, etc....... I also managed to stay within my calorie range today... YEAH!!!

I grew up in a home that believed that if you didn't produce it you didn't consume it, so I have never developed the soda habit. I also developed some stomach issues a few years ago, so I completely avoid the bubbles. What I am surprised about is the number of people that think they need their soda!

My habits developed with the little chocolate candies and I am pleased to say I avoided those again today.

Even though my husband encouraged me to skip my workout tonight. I did run. And I feel great!

I drink flavored seltzer or tonic water (always diet). I learned the hard way about the sodium, and only buy sodium free. I enjoy it in the evenings.
I had a tough day today, and when i got home from my kids, I took some Aleves and laid down for a while (my neck and shoulder were killing me). I fell asleep. Woke up a bit after 9 and still hadn't worked out. It took all my ambition, but I got it done. I went out and did a couple of miles at a very brisk pace. I was drenched by the time I got home. Whew.
I have a party to go to tomorrow, but I can't throw all this work away and I will attempt to be careful. I haven't lost any additional weight since the first week, but I have messed up a couple of times, so I am pleased that I am still down.
Catch you all tomorrow.

Thankfully I haven't had challenges with soda for a long time. But I used to think one per day was ok but now it's not something that is worth it for me. I think the last time I was on a kick, several years ago, I weaned myself from it by cutting back the quantity and then replacing it with ginger ale. At the same time I was working to increase water and eliminate a few processed foods - so it all worked together. I sometimes have sparking water with ginger or lemon, but that is more of a diversion or trick from eating something else I shouldn't.

My cardio is going well. I did another walk in our super nice weather. Tomorrow is a half-day of kayaking.

For the most part, I think I am doing ok. Yesterday was a complete bust ~ the humidity was so high I almost drowned when trying to workout and didn't eat very good. No I didn't over eat or eat junk, just didn't eat much at all. I can't eat when it's real hot! Did much better today!

I had a really challenging 10.5 hour day of work today. I need to get a fitbit to monitor how much I burn just being at work. I've lost another 5 pounds, down 14 from my start date. I had to work on the garden when I got home so no exercise. I need to get to bed as I need to be at work about 8.5 hours.

I've never been too much of a soda drinker so at least that is not a challenge I have to deal with.

I had a real check when I had gall bladder attacks and couldn't drink it--had to quit cold turkey--but I still drink diet cola on occasion.

I like to drink diet lemonade or hot tea (black) as my go tos when I don't want to drink water.

Today was a bad day off plan off solution plan off everything plan for me today. :-( But tomorrow is Saturday and I have a chance to go to the store and get the stuff to start again with the diet/menu plans for the rest of this week and from week one again.

I gave up soda years ago and don't miss it.
Since I did a race yesterday for the holiday, I did ST today. Although I finished 570/610 in the 5k, I beat 5 people in my age/gender. I'm really proud of myself. On Wed I changed into my swim suit at work and didn't put on a shirt over the suit.

Going to make banana bread tonight for tomorrow-- used up my stash of bfast cookies. Found a spark recipe using avocado and miso. I have a 21 oz bag of miso to use!

Got my cardio in the pool today and it felt great. I swam for quite a while and couldn't believe that I wasn't out of breath. A couple months ago I couldn't climb one flight of stairs without stopping to catch my breath and now I'm swimming laps in the pool for 30 plus minutes. Thank you Spark!

Getting close to the end of this challenge - have loved it and learned a lot about what I have been doing wrong.

a) Drinking to much lemonade - so have given that up and replaced it with 10 glasses of water - and loving it

b) Making sure I eat breakfast with veggs - I am not a veggy eater so am learning to be creative in how to get them in

c) Exercise - this is still a big of a struggle but am making improvement this week

I have also learned to try 2 new health recipes per week - making enough of each so that we can have 2 meals from it so 2 suppers will actually feed us for 4 suppers - helps with the cooking especially in this heat.

Am learning how to make healthy choices at a restaurant. For instance if we go out for breakfast (there are 3 of us) I would order an omelet with veggs in it and divide it in half so that my daughter and I only eat 1/2 of the omelet -this means also half of the hashbrowns and half of the toast - so we both benefit

Here are my stats for today

Weight
294.7

Blood pressure
134 / 69

Pulse
68

Glucose
6.4

NOTE - as of today I have lost 8.8 pounds in 12 days but will not officially record the final weight until the end of the challenge -wouldn't it be nice if I lost another 1,2 making a loss of 10!!

Wallahalla - I understand about the soda pop = I drank it every day and lots of it for over 40 years. On January 1 2012 I gave it up completely and have not had any since - and don't want any. I replaced it with lemonade and originally lost a little weight but then gained it back - I have not given up all lemonade and only drink water - nice cold cold water. Pop and Lemonade have no nutritional value so giving them up is a good thing

I struggle with drinking too much diet soda. I didn't realize until this week that it has sodium. that is probably been part of my problem, too much sodium. I love to add fruit to my water, and that satisfies me. My favorite concoction is 1 cup of lemon juice, 1 cup of frozen fruit, (any kind works, I've tried them all), and 8 cups of water. Pour over ice and YUM! I can down that in no time.

I did Zumba for my cardio today. Love it. Wish I had more Zumba dvds.

Are we there yet?

I've had 2 very hard days, calorie-wise - one on Saturday, when we went to Souplantation (wow - what an eye-opener!) and one yesterday when we ate out because of the holiday plus birthday cake. We're also at my parent's house for the week, which is always way more difficult for me, since they have so many more snacks and so much less of the things I stock up on to waylay my temptations. I'm working on sticking the cupboards here with safer foods, tho, so it's not nearly as bad as it was last summer. Exercise is still hard, tho we walked about 2 miles yesterday getting to and from the fireworks, so that was good.

I talked to my husband, and we've agreed that if I get my job back in the fall, my first paycheck is going to a gym membership. Now that he's home more, childcare is feasible, and as much as I want to work out at home, it just -isn't- happening. When I had the membership before, I was maintaining at 35 pounds lighter, and I'd so very much like to get back there. In the meantime, I'm moving as much as I can, and trying to get out and around a lot more!

Where I live we call all sodas Coke. I have an occosional Coke but iits probably no more than 6 a year. I used to drink nothing but sweet tea and coffee but niw its just water anc coffee with the occasional coke and sweet tea. The stats on how much you can lose by stopping coke consumption is surprising because I didnt lose any weight when I stopped drinking cokes several years ago or when I stopped drinking sweet tea a few years ago.

I went over my calorie budget yesterday. I had a family lunch then a cookout at work. There weren't any healthy choices at either. I didn't even log my food. I felt a huge difference. I was nauseated around 4am (I work all night and bet off at 6am so my eating clock is a little different). But I havent beat myself up over it. It was a holiday and the only thing I can do now os do better today.

Soda isn't a problem for me. For some reason the carbonation has never agreed with me. Same with sparkling waters and such. My vice is coffee, light and sweet. I usually have 2 pots on days we're home. On school days it's one pot with at least one stop at Starbucks. Recently I've been getting just an iced (or hot) coffee rather than an uber sweet calorie hog. I've tried kicking it but my migranes come back with a vengeance so I always come back.

today I'm taking a bit of a break, though we might go for a walk in a bit.

Why do we try so hard to be like everyone else, when we were born to be unique?

Soda has not been a problem of mine for years. I prefer unsweetened iced tea or water (plain or with slices of lemon or lime in it). Since we had off today (we usually have to work on the 5th, so it was a treat to have off) I went to a morning Jazzercise class. I am finding it easy to do cardio. I am seeing a difference. I like to walk in a nearby park that has varied elevation and terrain. I used to have to slow down and stop for air on the way uphill. I still slow down, but, now I can keep moving all the way up! That's real progress!

It feels like these 2 weeks went by quickly! I agree, this is a plan that I can stick to long-term.

I have not had a real coke in years. The only thing I drank was diet coke or pepsi until last year. When my Dr. told me to cut back my sodium due to my fluid retention problem. He also told me how much sodium was in them. He suggested that I switch to Diet Rite Cola when I drank cola as it has no calories, carbs, sodium, caffeine, artificial flavors nor aspartame. I have to tell you that I still drink it when I just have to have a cola (which isn't very often) and it is very good.

I gave up the soda thing quite a while ago...& don't miss it at all! I'm drinking only water & coffee, with occasional use of hot tea.

All is well on Day 12! I did a circuit class at the Y this morning...& consumed a healthy breakfast & lunch, which I tracked! I'm going for a simple & healthy dinner this evening...not in the mood to cook. I'm going to try some of the recipes from the book this weekend!

Keep on pushing & moving forward, my fellow Sparkers! You're all worthy of the effort!!!

Hello, Everyone! I just finished my Cobb salad! I love that thing! I am at work today, but I don't think anyone else is! Geez! I am leaving early, though, so I cannot complain. I am right on plan! As far as soda goes, (I am with GRANDMASHUNGRY, in my territory, we call it pop emoticon ) I have a diet pop occassionally. I have never been a fan of regular pop or many sweet drinks so soda-pop is not a big issue for me. A number of years back, I would drink the Diet Coke like it was going out of style and then one day had an epiphone and stopped. I like tea and water, an occassional brewski! Because it is pool season where I live, I have been doing most of my working out in my back yard in the pool. I love a pool work out...fun without seeming like "working" out!

Anyway, my lunch break is over! Have a great day! Back to work for me, for a little while anyway!

Yesterday was a bust... although a pleasant one. My birthday is tomorrow and my friends and hubby got together and threw me a big surprise party yesterday. Any planning I had done to eat healthy in the many places we were "supposed" to be going went out the window. I did try to make healthy choices from the options but there weren't many available. The good news is that I did turn down the soda for my Crystal Light.

Soda is all or nothing for me. I can't drink just one and even with diet soda I will drink way too many. So I've completely switched to Crystal Light and although it does have calories I can consider it a treat and not drink too many.

Hi all, Not a huge soda fan myself and I try to stay away from colas, they affect my calcium blood levels and I get leg cramps, so imagine the long term effect on your bones.

Last evening was the first time I went off plan and I could feel the difference. Went to the movies with friends and grabbed supper at the theater.

So far got in 20 minutes of exercise, going to a long walk this afternoon.

Soda is no longer an issue for me. I have found water and iced tea (no sugar added) are my drinks of choice in hot weather. Occasionally I have some, but it is always less that 12oz. For me, it was just my tastes changing. However, I do know that I prefer regular soda over diet because I actively avoid artificial sweeteners. I love the suggestion of a soda machine. Being able to control the syrup of the soda would be even better that regular soda.

Good morning,
Today's subject is soda.
Where I live we call it pop.
I am happy to say I haven't drank any dark pop going on 6 years now.
I found out that was what was giving me IBS., plus why drink something that my husband uses to clean battery cables with!
I have to confess that I started drinking Mt. Dew about a year and a half ago and after about 3 months of that I started getting heartburn again at night. I don't like diet pop but to stop the habit I mixed diet with regular then all diet and then one day I said enough is enough and haven't drank it since.
My drink of choice is unsweetened tea or water.
I hope every one has a great day.
Mine started out with 25 mins. of exercise and Better Banana Bread!

I haven't had a "real" soda in years. For me the trick was to drink the diet stuff really COLD and with food at first. I'm used to it now and it tastes normal to me.

I got up and ran this morning and it was really tough. I'm really sore now. I think this is because I ran a 4 miler race yesterday. It's a shorter distance than I normally run but with the race conditions I tend to run faster & push myself more than I do when I'm out running with the dog. Also most of the time races are on Saturdays and when we run a race, we usually take the next day off the run. I suppose that's the problem. I hate to think my fitness level is going backwards.

I went into the Fourth of July dreading not having my "normal" large amount of beer and brats....but, went through with no beer and all healthy choices and had a great time.

Happy 5th of July! In our town, the big fireworks are tonight and we always have a bunch of friends over for a cookout and then walk over to the high school to watch the fireworks. Fourth of July food was easy to control, since it was just family, but today, it's eating as a social event! I've made a big fruit salad and a Mediterranean salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, feta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar) to help give me healthy options. Someone else is bringing the pasta/potato salad and desserts. I've also made Chef Meg's Boston Baked Beans, but I don't like baked beans - the kids do however, and they will get a healthier version with less salt!

I haven't begun today with a walk, but I know I have much to do, so I should remain pretty active all day.

Have a super day. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I have totally lost track of what day we are on, but I am eating healthy, tracking what I eat, and exercising.

I will have no problem sticking to this new lifestyle. Lots of variety, yet not a lot of things we have to buy special.

Way to go SparkPeople!

Do not post in this thread before Day 12 (July 5).

Soda is a bad habit that many of us have a hard time breaking. Today you learned that skipping a daily 20-ounce regular soda for a diet one cuts enough calories to amount to a 31-pound weight loss in a year. First of all, did that number shock you? Second of all, do you struggle to limit your soda consumption? If you've broken a soda habit, how did you do it and what tips do you have for others? If you love soda but not the calories, consider investing in a soda water maker. It will pay for itself within a few months, and you can flavor carbonated water for few calories with a few berries, citrus slices, or even fresh herbs like mint. Here are a dozen tips to drink 8 cups a day: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/

You're up to 30 minutes of cardio today! Congrats! What did you do, and how did you feel? Is it getting easier? Have you noticed any fitness gains since starting the program?
