I'm on levo. and started taking it at night before bed, rather than when I wake up. Granted, I have a hard time getting up in the morning, still- but once I DO get up, I have been having more energy throughout the day. You may want to check with your doctor about this. I didn't bother since mine had me all messed up, anyhow, on too low meds (which might also be an issue for you?) I think it was a Mary Shomon related suggestion- to change when you take the meds.

Another benefit is that now I don't have to wait to eat breakfast or have coffee. I've actually cut down the caffeinated coffee, too. There are still some seriously rough days, but I have noticed I am not having the urge to sleep all day, everyday.

Hand me a guitar, because I am a ROCKSTAHHH!!!

I made an error and posted the correct information about Armour in the post below. I should not check mail when I am tired and can not think straight.

Also sorry for posting below, but I could only paste when I was on the site before this.

Armour and Thyrolar are drugs that provide BOTH T4 and T3 thyroid hormones, instead of just providing T4, as levothyroxine sodium drugs like Synthroid do.

I am so happy you lost weight. Your doctor is correct about the fatigue. The day you saw your doctor, I saw a doctor show that reported it takes a while after giving birth for hormonal levels to return to normal and most women are tired.

Armour is T-4. I need to take Armour since my body does not convert levoxyl to T-4. My test results arrived by mail today. My TSH and T-4 were okay, but the T-3 high and vitamin D low. The test was done before I changed the way I take Armour and started eating three meals and taking vitamins daily. I lost a few pounds in three weeks and am pleased as punch.

Keep doing what you are doing and you will look and feel better.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer me! I did see my endo yesterday. My levels (both for thyroid and for PCOS) were all fine, she said, so she made no adjustments to my meds. About the need for so much sleep, she said it's just that my baby's birth was so recent. (I hope she's right!) ;) Anyway, once again, she pushed the importance of diet and exercise. I printed out one of the SP flyers and gave to her. I hope she'll check it out and refer other patients to SP! :) I had lost 27 lbs since she had seen me last, so she was pleased. :) What exactly is Armour?

Congrats on the baby. It takes time after having a baby for hormones to adjust. I was depressed, tired, etc for several months after giving birth to my last child. The doctor (GP) said it was due to having three kids under 5, but I know my levels were off b/c I had panic attacks, etc too.

I had a problem with sleeping 10-12 hours daily and over eating when my thyroid levels are low. The over eating stopped, but sleeping a lot and not being able to get up early in the morning presists. I take levoxyl and armour before breakfast.

Your symptoms could be low thyroid and/or combo of low thyroid/hormones being off after delivery. You may want to have your doctor check to make sure you don't have a sinus infection, allergy, etc if the heavy, achy head persists.

I had shooting head pain that I thought was from thyroid medication and it turned out to be from a sinus cyst that required anti boitics.

My endo recommends exercise to cope with depression, etc. It is good you are exercising.

Let us know how your appointment with the doctor goes.

Hey everyone! I have had hypothyroidism for about 8 years, that I know of. I struggled with depression with my first pregnancy, and it continually got worse afterward. It took some time before anyone checked my thyroid, and then I had to request it. Bingo. Anyway, I have been on Synthroid in varying dosages ever since. I take my Synthroid in the morning, as directed by my doctor... and I have noticed that if I go back to sleep after taking it, it is VERY HARD for me to wake up and gives me a very heavy, achy head. (?) It SEEMS to be related to the med. I also am in need of LOTS of sleep, it seems... I have a very hard time getting up early. Even though I have been exercising religiously for the past almost 2 weeks... still tired. I see my endo tomorrow... hoping to find out a little more about why so tired. My hair is also falling out terribly (I did have a baby 4 months ago, but this is MUCH MORE hair than usual). I also have PCOS and take metformin for that. Anyone know more about the tiredness?

Is sleeping more and being more hungry a symptom of hypothyroidism?

Lauri,

Great idea. I have kept lighting low to save money and will see if installing these light bulbs help.

I find out in two weeks if my thyroid levels are okay or off.

If you're SURE that your thyroid meds are where they should be, then you might want to go to the health food store (sometimes at regular hardware stores) and get yourself some full-spectrum light bulbs. They ARE pricey, but we can all use a lift & they are what's prescribed for Seasonal Affective Disorder (or even just the Rainy Day Blues).
I have them in 2 rooms for my birds, who obviously don't get any natural sunlight, but we all benefit, too!
I hope this helps, Lauri

Maybe my body is gearing up for winter. I was elevated by a therapist and do not have SAD, but noticed I lack interest in things. I drink plenty of water and do puzzles, etc on nights I am not at the gym. I have been eating bread which I never did before and need to cut it out. The price of gas, etc keeps me home more than before. I exercises 4 times a week (three nights) and will try some things mentioned.

Thanks for the imput.

I'm with Laurie also. That's why I do like any craftwork out there as well.

This is the time also to test your mettle and stick to a healthy eating plan. If you get hungry and can't avoid it try a small amount of protein. A handful of nuts or an ounce or two of meat or an egg white can quell hunger pretty well. Or add up some fiber to your diet. A quarter or half cup of fiber one cereal with a bit of skim milk can do the same for putting hunger pangs to sleep. Record everything in your tracker! Drink your water! Test the hunger....wait 10 min and see if you're still hungry. Some of us have a hard time determining true hunger from want or boredom.

If you get stressed out eat some catnip and go to sleep

I've had this. If your body needs to sleep ten hours a night, then sleep! As for the eating, schedule smaller meals and snacks and when the urge to eat falls outside that time (and assuming you're NOT hungry), then it's time to take up a hobby that involves both hands...there's a reason why I knit. It has reduced the mindless and stress eating. Beading, sewing, embroidery, painting, drawing, scrapbooking, writing, sculpting...they all can keep your hands busy. If you are indeed hungry, then it may be time to re-examine your eating habits; maybe you need to increase your caloric intake, protein, or fiber. All of those things will help you feel more satisfied and full.

Hello! I've noticed I like to sleep longer with lesser day light. Someone told me it's seasonal depression. Who knows. I don't eat more though.

Appeals, are you feeling sad or have you lost interest in the things you used to enjoy? Do you feel tired or have low energy? You could have seasonal affective disorder. If you haven't heard of it, it's basically a common, short-term depression that comes on in fall/winter and goes away in the spring. If you do think that's happening there are lots of different treatments - short term therapy, behavioral activation (basically getting more exercise, using a sleep schedule, spending more time with friends) or even light therapy, where you sit in front of special lights designed to mimic the light from the sun.

If you aren't feeling sad or lost interest, or don't feel low energy, you may just be getting ready for winter! :) We do know that the amount of sunlight in a day can affect "circadian rhythms" - sleeping and eating patterns. (It's probably related to comfort food, etc., too - I always want to bake or make more hearty meals in the winter.)

It's possible to "trick" your body by sticking to a strict schedule - trying to stay on your usual 6-7 hour sleep schedule and maintaining the meals/snacks you ate during warmer weather. If you try that for a couple weeks, you may see a change. And of course, exercise can make you tired and reduce appetite...

Good luck getting back on schedule!
