Thanks for the information. I may talk to my doctor about this. I have been on 200 milligrams for 21 years. It looks like the Doctor has to write a presciption. I wouldn't change this anyway without talking with my Doctor. I have to work very hard to lose weight and feel tired most of the time.

Hi Germaine,

Armour Thyroid is the natural thyroid medication that was given to people since the turn of the century prior to the invention of the synthetic medications like Synthroid, Levoxyl, etc. It's made with dessicated pig thyroids under strict pharmacological standards by Forest Pharmaceuticals. Unlike Synthroid, which contains only T4, Armour contains contains T,T3,T2 & T1. For some patients with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, it's a better medication because they don't always convert the T4 in Synthroid to the T3 our bodies need. That was my problem and why I switched to Armour. Se the links below for more
information.

Hi Funnypie!

Glad to see you back on the boards!! Most Drs and labs go by the old values for TSH of .5-5.0, but in 2003, the American Assn of Clinical Endocrinologists advised the TSH values be changed to .3-3.0, with an optimal being 1-2. See the link below for more info.

I am on Synthroid 100 mcg. My TSH was 119.5 when I was diagnosed. My first follow up is next month so I'm curious to see the labs. I've been on the Synthroid for 6 weeks now.

As far as losing weight I lost 4lbs in 5 weeks since I started on the meds. I did that at the first of the year when I joined WW too. Lost 4lbs right away and then lost and gained the same 2-3 lbs. Now I am stalling again. So since the first of the year I have lost a whopping 6 lbs! It sure is frustrating and it sure is good to have people that understand!

Hey Funnypie! I feel your frustration. But don't give up! I finally started losing weight after my doctor put me on 175mcg AND Adipex-P which is a metabolizer. So far it's 25 pounds off, which is GREAT considering I am hypo.

I had been dieting and exercising from August til January, because I was going on a cruise and wanted to lose about 50 pounds before I went. NOTHING! I only gained weight. And finally in February I started with this med combo and started losing weight. So hang in there. I does take a minute to get everything in order. But once you do, it's worth it. Trust me. Just read the various topics in this forum and you will see that we all are in this struggle together.

You'll get there, albeit slower than "normal" people. But you'll get there. And you'll be fine. Best wishes to ya!

Hi All!

I just got moved up overnight from 50mcg to 100mcg of Synthroid, AND my doctor wrote on the RX that it was NOT to be a generic. I don't know if it's going to help yet, but I do know that I've been pretty miserable on 50 mcg of levothyroxin. Then I looked up the main symptoms bothering me, and discovered on my own that my dose was too low. The doc did TSH test, and sure enough, I got a 25! (Apparently it's supposed to be .3 to 5 at most,LOL)

Anyway, what I mostly wanted to share is this

www.synthroid.com

The website is great. They have free coupons, free newsletters, things you can print out to help talk with the doctor, etc etc.

Good luck to you all.

I personally have been dieting my butt off since March 3...and only gained weight. :(

Hope things improve soon.
It's not fair that the world is so mean to "fat" people, and I bet 99% of us are suffering from some health problem, not a laziness issue. I mean, I'm not saying I don't have my moments of tiredness or laziness, but I bet they are fewer than most so-called "normal" weight people!

But now that I have hypothyroidism, I am so frustrated with working hard and seeing NO results.

Thanks for writing and thanks for listening! :)

BTW, Kizzie, I'm no longer on Synthroid because it was
no longer helping me. I wasn't sleeping, couldn't lose weight, tired all the time, had thinning hair, etc.,
so I recently switched over to Armour Thyroid and the first beneficial effect I noticed was much better and
deeper sleep, and I went from a weight loss plateau
to starting to lose again.

hmmm... I'm not sure if she is doing a full panel. I know that she has been testing my TSH levels. But when I go back to her in about 4 weeks I will make sure to ask. Thank and thanks to everyone for input. I'm learning a lot from reading your responses. Thanks again. I will check and keep you all updated as regularly as possible.

Kizzie, your dose is not that high. I've had Hashimoto's for decades, which basically destroys
the thyroid, and I've been on a dose of Synthroid
of 300 mcg to 275 mcg most of the time because my thyroid is pretty much no longer functioning.
If my understanding is correct, ablation also
destroys the function of the thyroid. Is your Dr.
performing a full thyroid panel or just TSH to
adjust your meds, because that's very important.

Mzz mentioned tracking your foods and measuring them. About 4 years ago, I went on a diet, before the big thyroid problems, and I lost 60 pounds. BUT, the scale has never left my kitchen table and I weigh EVERYTHING or put it in a measuring cup, depending on what it is. I don't guess because my eyes make everything smaller.

I am taking the same dose as you and lately have felt very tired but when I metioned it to my Doc one time she said it could be because I am not active enough and some days I wonder if that is what it is. I have lost 11lbs since 1/14 to me thats to slow when I want to lose 100. Since I lost 11lbs I feel that I am standing still but I know I could be doing more to help it just frustrated and tired of ebing over weight!

hi Kizzie and welcome to the Thyroid Team!

Sorry to hear of your gain, its incredibly frustrating to get weight off once its on with this disease. I was lucky and caught mine before things got too out of hand or I developed any of the other lovely concommitant diseases that seem to travel with autoimmune thyroid. Not that my future will necessarily be free of them.

I'm on alternating doses of Synthroid, 50 one day and 75 the next.

Docs generally prescribe on your initial TSH score and your wieght. When you don't have a thyroid its higher, cuz the thyroid is too sick to contribute very much hormone.

Congratulations in loosing that ten pounds! Load your trackers, make sure you input everything, measure your foods until you have a good idea of portions. That way you'll have an accurate picture of where you are, how good you've been when someone tries to tell ya you aren't eating properly or exercizing enuf! LOL

Its a bit harder for us, but you can do it... hey you've just lost 10 pounds!

I'm on alternating doses of .175 mcg and .150 mcg since Nov. I know that I need to get back in for new labwork since I've lost 10 lbs- dr. will probably decrease meds to .150 mcg. I've been there and done this with the weight fluctuations and med. changes. Weight definitely does come off slower for those who have thyroid issues.

I was on .125 and my Dr lowered it twice - I was feeling good before - now I'm wiped out, can't sleep and can't loose anything (it was coming off very slow before) I'm presently doing .112 but am seriously considering begging him to have it changed.

Im on 150. A little higher than where I should be at but because of my levels being so unstable for a long time the doctor has decided to leave there for now.

Im loosing but slowly, I have been on this since october of 07', i eat right and exercise 5x per week. Its coming off but slowly, just be patient with yourself, we are never going to loose like someone with a completely healthy thyroid, this is a fact.

You can do it, just dont get discouraged. I have lost more in inches than actual weight so I have that to keep me going.

Just wondering what dosage of synthroid are you on? I'm taking 175 mg a day, which is pretty high (I've been told). Since having my ablation (am I spelling it right) in July 06 I ballooned from 215 to 309! I have lost about 10 pounds, but it is so slow. Sometimes I regret having it done, but my heart was at risk. So... Anyway, just wondering how the medication is affecting people. Sometimes I feel a little tremulous at times, but other than that I've been fine.
