I shared a new recipe today for Ting-A-Lings, which I make every Christmas. I figure I'm just gonna make those this year and keep a tin in the house just in case I get the chocolate Christmas treat itch! My mom used to make 'em when I was little & they're so easy! Since it's just cereal & chocolate, there's only about 57 calories & 3 grams of fat per Ting-A-Ling, so they're relatively guiltless when compared to other holiday goodies. And perfect for squelching the chocolate cravings! emoticon

Thanks for all the info! Wow, the calories in such tiny quantities are so high! I really don't know how I'm going to fare this season. Since I've broken my daily calories down into 3 300 calorie meals and 2 150 calorie snacks, snacking at parties doesn't look possible at all for me! I know it's the holidays and we are supposed to enjoy ourselves, but I just don't see the point in throwing away all my hard work and thus, my progress. Aaaargh! I'm so glad you posted these swiss colony numbers - it's really going to help me to stay good!

Please, post the eggnog recipe. A lighter version would make it an allowable(sp?) treat for me!

Oh yeah, those brownies are LOADED, aren't they? No, thanks!
You mentioned eggnog earlier. That's probably the one thing I can't pass up during the holidays, which is unfortunate, because it's one of the holiday treats that's highest in cals & fat! However, I saw a recipe for a much lighter version that I'm going to make. Can't wait to try it out! It's actually on one of the bulletin boards at my work (its theme is staying fit during the holiday season) so I'm going to copy it today. I'll post it here if anyone's interested :).

Wow! I was searching for nutritional values for brownies as I'm sure to be tempted by them at some point within the next couple of weeks, and boy was I surprised at the numbers! There are almost always fudgy brownies at cookie exchange parties - did you know they can have as many as 410 calories per brownie? Ordinary powdered sugar dusted brownies are not usually the fare at these parties. For the holidays you can count on ooey, gooey, extra fudgy, and with frosting! Since I'm keeping my MEALS at no more than 300 calories each, I think I'll be taking a pass on the brownies this year!

I thought so, too. Plus, even though my husband's getting prime rib, I'm sure it won't be enough for him and he'll be more than willing to inhale the other half of my meal. He's a human garbage disposal emoticon

I'd do better to educate myself on all the treats that are going to be at my work's annual Christmas party tomorrow! Although, I kind of already planned it out. It's open bar, so I told hubby he could drink and I'll be the designated driver. I ordered the salmon dinner, but who knows what kind of buttery concoction it and the veggies will be drowned in (and it's one of those mass banquet type deals, so I can't ask for any kind of special food preparation), so I'm just going to eat half emoticon .

Frango Mint Chocolates - 53 calories each! (and really, when have I ever been able to eat just one?)

Ok, so as I was falling asleep last night a thought popped into my brain - an idea really, for an interesting challenge. With the holidays coming so very quickly, we will find ourselves faced with temptations: holiday parties, snacking, drinking, baking, etc. So, here's my challenge: think of a temptation you are sure to face. It may be something as simple as spinach dip served every year at your sister's cookie exchange, or a chocolate martini and the neighborhood open house. Now, look up that one food or beverage and find out it's calorie/fat content and post it here. Go into the holidays as educated about your "temptations" as possible. If you knew that there were 528 calories and 40 grams of fat in a glass of eggnog, would you go for that 2nd glass? I'm not saying we have to say turn down our holiday treats, but planning for them and using portion control will surely help us stay on track. Be aware of the calories BEFORE you head out - don't wait for the bad news by tracking AFTER you've over-indulged!
This "challenge" is not limited to holiday food. We can easily extend it to cover comfort foods, favorite restaurant foods, barbeque and picnic foods, ... you get the idea! Post away!
