I started to follow the book, but got a bit side tracked - but now having read everyone's entries, I will start again. I am pleased that I have lost a pound, the first in a very long time - so I know that I can achieve my goal.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Consistency is the key, I make myself "reboot" each time I veer off the spark plan and learn from what lead to the variance. I need to go forward !! emoticon

That is one of the recipes I haven't tried. You've given me a desire to do that! :) thanks!

I have found there are a few recipes in the book I will never make again, but very few. :)
Good Luck on your journey!!! :)

I preordered the book a d did the first challenge and have been mixing up the recipes ever since (has it been six months?!). I never paid much attention to the slim sausage gravy before but had a craving for it this week so I finally picked up the breakfast sausage and holy moly it was good! Better that greasy fatty restaurant sausage gravy and making it at home let's me control the heat (I don't like anything too spicy). I will definitely make this again! I just used pillsbury biscuits but the calories were the same as of of Chef Megs plus I have more to freeze.

So glad I bought this book!

I followed most of the recipes, some were great and some I probably will not try again. Participating in this challenge helped me get on track for regular exercise and tracking my food. I went out of town last week for a wedding and gained 2 pounds back. Now I gotta get back on track and restart moving in the right direction.

I do not think I need to start over, just start following the program again and I know it will not be long before I am moving in the right direction again.

I really like the recipes. Since I received the book, it hasn't left my kitchen counter! I do make substitutions in some of the recipes, but even so, they give me good ideas to start with. Some of them, like the protein pancakes, put ingredients I'd never consider together with yummy results.

So far since April I am officially down 20lbs! At least 7 came from doing the challenge :) (both times). I had my downs though, and know what I did that slowed the weight loss down, but once I got back into the swing of the book again, another few pounds were gone. What I like is that it is simple, and it works. Knowing how to lose weight is easy, we all know how, but the book helps give you the proper steps to put that knowledge into action :).

I'm still getting into gear but think this book is a great resource. I also have The Spark and The Spark Cookbook. I think if I use all three of them I should be able to keep going without getting bored. I plan to go back and redo Weeks 1 & 2, then maybe going to the Spark for the longer plan, using the cookbook to substitue for recipes I don't like.

Really enjoyed this challenge and it will continue. I will continue to track my food, exercise and water and reference the book when I need a refresher or looking for that recipe.

I enjoyed the 2 weeks. I did many of the recipes but not all. I started tracking again which was helpful. I lost 1.6. I plan to keep using the SS as a guide for both meals and exercise format. I do use the gym and count that as my cardio and ST....but I still would like to be able to do the ST exercises in the book with more ease. Onward we go! emoticon

I'm another one who has not stuck to the exact meal plan, but have tried to use it as a guide for calories & nutrients. Hopefully I didn't do too bad. This program has been a big help in getting back on track by not only giving me a guide, but it is always on my mind which has helped me several times to tell myself no when tempted to eat what I shouldn't and to tell myself that's ok, don't blow the rest of the day when I succumbed. Thanks and I intend to keep going for the next few weeks to get some patterns set! SPark People = a big Woo HOO!

I have not stuck to the exact meal plan from the book. However, I did the challenge and stuck to the book. The motivation is definitely what I needed. 4 lbs down and will weigh again tomorrow. I am definitely excited..definitely motivated and almost to my second goal. I think the combination of The Spark Solution and the Spark Coach have kept me accountable and changed my outlook. I exercised more than I thought I was able to and now feel I need to tone more. (that skin does hang a bit) lol. I'd advise anyone reading this to take advantage of the book and spark coach and the next challengen whenever it may appear. I don't plan to stop improving. emoticon
Good luck and

I am using the Spark solution as a way to regroup and get back on track. I have not followed it to a T, and did get off track for a couple days around the 4 th...but I am back on and plan to finish the four weeks, at least.. I have lost a couple pounds and I am at the end of week 2. My family has pretty much been doing it with me, (at least for dinner)! And they have really liked the meals. I have just been doubling the recipes so there is enough because I don't want to make two different meals. I find some of the recipes to be bland since none of them call for any salt. I know that's healthier but I have had to add a little salt to some of them. But I'm still using less than before. Overall, I think it's a well written guide to losing weight and recipe book. My only advice is to stick to the calories (though I think I may have to go a little lower), and definitely exercise! Keep up the good work!

I am starting on week 4 I believe (lost track). However, I plan to reread weeks 1 & 2. And review the chapters I've read. Thanks for the bonuses. Checking in to Spark Coach each day has helped me to focus. No I am not satisfied with my weight loss but remind myself I have stuck with SP several years and have not gained the 30 #'s I lost as planned. My plan now is to lose more (it is slow) (I have also lost an inch in height) but by golly the book and motivation all over the place sure helps.
Hugs and good luck to all.

On week 6 & still using the book, not getting bored, just switching the order of recipes as needed, not using the ones my family didn't care for & trying new ones from Spark Cookbook. Keeping within range & exercising. Hit a bit of a plateau this week after losing 2 lbs per week steadily but hope to have it off before weigh in day. Changing up exercise & calorie intake to accomplish this!

I must admit having fallen off the book's plan, but am to it today. I can say by following the philosophy I am losing. I just had a hectic few weeks and could not follow along. It is working though, just not as closely as I originally thought I would be able to follow.
Thank you Spark...would not be where I am without you all.

Thanks for this book and this reminder. I've not done well with the plan as written, but have been very motivated and am working it again to incorporate it into my life.

You've inspired me to find the original emoticon book for an extra boost (btw, you guys need your own emoticon icon) and am reading it now, while eating the recipes and following the neat/fitness of the book.

Thanks again!

Starting week 5 & I'm down 12lbs; I plan to keep going as long as I can. I don't get bored with the menus because I'm switching them around & I still haven't tried all the recipes in the book. I've even had a day where I ate in a restaurant & one away from home & two graduations & still haven't "fell off the wagon" or gained & got so discouraged that I quit. I feel so much better too! emoticon emoticon

I just keep reading and going back to different articles I read at the beginning of the book but they are now making more sense. Recipes are also easier to make and they tasting better too.
The motivation level is high and I'm seeing the benefits of getting the book.

Hi MOONSTREAM, to find the recipe you need to do the following:
Let's say you want to make Dijon-Herb Pork Tenderloin for lunch today.
- Click "add a food"
- Click "Recipes"
- Scroll down Spark Solution Recipes
- Click "Dijon-Herb Pork Tenderloin"
- Click "Add Food to Tracker" and close that window

Finally, click "view recipe" that is in red

Hi. I've been on vacation & had our daughters' h.s. graduation/party this past weekend so just started today. My daughter is cooking the meals for the next two weeks - yum!

Question - is there an easy way to find the recipes on the Nutrition tracker?

I've enjoyed The Spark Solution Challenge and nutritious recipes. Starting Week 4 and still feeling energized. Reading Chapters 3 and 4 again for information that I missed the first read. Kudos to the SparkPeople Team! emoticon emoticon

Had the Mexican Pizza for dinner, that was yummy! Still on track & still going on; I've lost 8.5 lbs in 3 weeks! And that's with even going out with friends for breakfast yesterday.

emoticon SO MUCH! I lost 6 pounds in the two weeks. Then I had a houseful of relatives for a week. Stayed pretty much the same - 1.5 gain. I did have healthy items available and made meals as healthy as possible. But some brought favorite foods of their own and shared. We are off for a week getaway and then we both plan on starting the 2 weeks again. I have more confidence now and am actually looking forward to it.

Good luck to all and I will continue to follow and reply.

Didn't do as well today, went out with friends for breakfast, tried to make healthy choices, but ended up okay calories-wise, but not in fats, sodium & cholestrol.

For lunch today I had the Mexican Pizza which I enjoyed. I am pleased with the progress that I have made since I've completed The Spark Solution Challenge. I have not gone to a restaurant for a meal or bought takeout either. Usually on Friday or Saturday I would buy takeout, but today after my afternoon walk, I stopped for a pedicure instead! Had the Carolina-style BBQ Chicken for dinner. YUMMY! Healthy eating all! emoticon emoticon

Thanks for your message Step and thanks to Becky too... love the book and the structure. I am jazzed with the progress and focus, I would like to repeat in mid-June because I was a bit distracted from what I needed to fix and do each day..... as I became a Grandmama on the 14th!

I so appreciate the encouragement and emphasis of doing the best we can and not getting sidetracked by defeating thoughts.

And Happy Birthday.... I am sure it had to be great...

I am one of those that is not following anything exactly, I do go to the gym for aerobics class 3 times a week, and walk daily at least 60 minutes, 2.3 to 3 miles per hour, I know not real strenuous, but steady, the recipes I just have not got started on, I know almost 2 weeks, but, I am staying under my calories for the day, and really watching the nutrition, and I am motivated, really think I will get rid of this 10 pounds for good,

I am remaking a few recipes from weeks 1 and 2. It is getting much easier to plan for and prepare my meals. I appreciate how important it is to follow a recipe, it makes life much easier. The Tips/Swaps in The Spark Solution are excellent too! emoticon emoticon emoticon

It was a great 2 weeks, and I am looking forward to keeping it integrated with our daily meals. My son is in love with the banana bread :). That is becoming one of our new staples, lol. I did lose while on the plan, and plan on restarting it again next week (we are going through all the leftovers this week). With a better focus on the portions, and groceries, I am able to buy what I need without over buying so it will be much easier the second time around. The first time I have to be honest, my week 1 grocery bill was $185.00 for two people. Now I can be more aware of what I am using where and structure it to fit back into our life.

I asked my son what his thoughts were on it, and his biggest reward was that mom was eating breakfast with him. I typically microwaved eggs at work, but with the spinach in the recipes, I really needed to cook it at home. This will become a new habit for us. Weight aside, that was a great reward for us both emoticon

emoticon My neighbors at the Senior Apartment complex where I live always have a picnic on Holidays and everyone brings a dish to pass. I took an egg salad sandwich for me and pretzel sticks to pass. I passed on all the dishes that came to me without taking any. Potato salad, Mac & Cheese etc. comfort food, I can't stop at a little so left it alone. I was and am so proud of me!

Glad you had a happy and healthy birthday Steph!

I am starting over Week 1 again and really enjoying preparing the recipes again too. Each day I try a different breakfast or lunch and have a leftover recipe from the Spark Challenge. I have to make room in the fridge before I start making new dinners. Surprisingly, I've only had to shop for fresh fruits, veggies or milk. Keeping a new list for shopping this weekend. This I can easily follow for the rest of my life. I enjoy the healthier and lighter meals! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy belated birthday!! Thank you for all of your insights and inspiration to keep me going. Life did happen, but I hung in there and lost just a couple of pounds. But, I'm now more consistent with exercise and making good eating choices when traveling. I'm going to start the 2 weeks again (not quite ready for week 3, yet). Looking forward to seeing details on the mid-June challenge. It will help. Thank you again!

I am truly amazed at the book. I really did better at following the plan than I thought I would. The recipes were really great and my Dh has been enjoying them and complimenting me on the great meals! They are keepers that will get easier to make when I make them again. Thank you for all the hard work and thanks to Becky, too. I like to hold a book and read and this one will get a lot of use for years! Spark On! Kay

Great thoughts, Stepf. It was like a lightbulb went off when you said "The #1 hurdle you face when trying to lose weight is not your body. It’s your mind."

I struggled over the holiday weekend with eating and making healthy choices. I thought I had been doing better quieting that critical voice inside my head, but I realize I still have a ways to go. I made a conscious decision to eat more healthfully today and will walk the dog after dinner. It is easy to piggy-back on healthy choices, but also easy to get sucked into the spiral of guilt and shame that can result from one unhealthy choice (as it did for me last Friday, which directly led to a weekend "free-for-all" of epic proportions).

I plan on continuing with the Spark Solution program using what works best for me. Thanks again for everyone's work on this book, I know it is helping people!

Stay positive.
Do not give up.

Hey, that's okay, everyone needs a day off!! emoticon

I'm continuing with the plan because it taught me so much about cooking & eating right & making it taste good. Thanks!! I lost 7 lbs which is quite a bit, but I had more to lose than a lot of people & I think quite a bit of it was fluid retention. Now I'm to the nitty gritty where it won't come off as easily. I'm determined to stay with program! emoticon

It has been a few weeks since “The Spark Solution” came out, and I wanted to share a few observations I’ve made after reading your blogs, listening to your stories, and answering your questions.

“The Spark Solution” can be taken as written, or it can be taken piecemeal. We tested the program on people who followed it exactly, but we understand that life is what happens when we’re making other plans. The book assumes that you’re making breakfast, lunch and snacks for one but cooking dinner for four. We know this doesn’t apply to everyone’s lifestyle. That’s OK. You might end up with leftovers for another dinner or divide the recipe to suit your needs. Maybe you hate broccoli or need to swap tofu for chicken. That’s OK. We heard that some of you can’t do all the exercises as written or are in training for a 5K so need to change the cardio a bit. That’s OK. Some of you are juggling the plan while traveling for business, recovering from surgery, or dealing with major life issues. You’ve needed to make adjustments. That’s OK.

Whether you lost 1 pounds or 6 during the first two weeks, whether you cooked 14 dinners from the book or just four, whether you worked out as the plan suggests or did your own thing, that’s OK. Neither “The Spark Solution” nor SparkPeople is about perfection. It’s about doing your best, finding some satisfaction with where you are now, and enjoying this journey.

When you focus on the mistakes, you can’t learn from them.

You are not dumb if you eat a cookie (or a whole box of them).

You are not a failure if you don’t cook dinner for yourself (no matter what you eat instead).

You are not a quitter if you sleep in instead of working out (even if you do no formal activity that day).

The book aims to set an example, to show you what’s possible.
The #1 hurdle you face when trying to lose weight is not your body. It’s your mind.

These sections of the book are worth re-reading if you’re struggling with the motivation aspect:

On pages 11-12, we say (emphasis added):
we help you press the reset button. There’s no place for self-loathing or negative thoughts about your body or your potential. Your inner skeptic is silenced, and your inner believer is awakened. Starting now, you will believe in yourself, because you can and you will do this.
And knowing that makes all the difference in your long-term potential for success. We hear over and over from our members who tell each other, “If I can do it, anyone can do it!” Accepting a new mind-set about weight loss will allow you to slowly build back your confidence until nothing can stop you, with your health and in other areas of life.

Page 5:
Those who failed did so within the first two weeks, and we know what they did wrong. Those who succeeded were motivated from day one and even more motivated after two weeks on the program, thanks to the goals we helped them set. We’ll share what we learned from both groups. …

Like all of you, these members wanted to lose weight. Like many of you, they had tried to lose weight and quit, repeatedly. But when they came to SparkPeople, something changed.
Something clicked. They built momentum, changed their mind-set about weight loss, and boosted their metabolism through simple swaps and healthy habits. Rather than giving up on their goals, they stayed motivated until they reached them—and then set more.

If you didn’t lose as much as you expected to, take a look at page 8, “Six Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight Already.” Be honest with yourself as you read through that list. Do any of them apply to you?

We want to help you become your healthiest, happiest self. Maybe that started a little more than two weeks ago, or maybe you’re just not there yet. If you want a “do-over,” we’re going to offer it to you in about a month. (We’ll be running another challenge in mid-June—details coming soon, and you can participate even if you started the book during the first challenge.)

In the meantime, take advantage of the SparkCoach subscription you were gifted for ordering the book, which will help boost your motivation. Read through the book, and plan ahead. Anticipate your hurdles before they block your path.

If you’re on track, use the Nutrition Tracker to help you plan ahead for weeks 3 and 4 (and beyond). Make a meal plan, and stick to it. The recipes in the book are available on your Nutrition Tracker, so you can easily swap them into your plan and see how they will fit into your calorie budget for the day.

If you are finding that your mind is your biggest hurdle, as it usually is for me, I invite you to read through these blog posts, written with the intent of calming that inner voice that prevents us from being our best self.

Thank you for sharing your journey with Becky and me, and I look forward to hearing more about your successes—and your struggles.

Spark Cheers,
Stepfanie

p.s. I’m sorry for not posting this yesterday—it was my birthday!
