I've been on The Fast Diet for 3 weeks now, and I've lost 2.5 pounds! I find the fast days challenging, but definitely manageable. I hope to continue to lose about 1 pound per week. For those who have been on the diet for longer, is that a typical weight lose for you?

Yes. I don't count calories anyway, but I would eat a normal amount on non fast days. I eat slowly and stop as soon as I start to feel full. I find that works fine, and since your stomach shrinks after a while with the regular fasting, the amount you can eat before feeling full lessens. I also find it better to eat fairly high fat/protein on my non fast days.

I began this plan this week, with one fast day so far. It went fairly well. On "feast" days I have tried to stay at the lower end of my calorie range. Today I was so hungry all day and even though I ate plenty I am still hungry. So I am thinking I need to eat more on feast days. Anyone else experienced this?

Yes I track calories every day. I'm sick and tired of it, but am frequently way off on my guesses. My fast pattern is a bit rocky too. Sometimes I just don't feel like depriving myself - other times I find myself fasting on a non fast day, or inadvertently fasting 3 days, & worrying if I'm throwing my metabolism into starvation mode.

Let the good times increase as the weight shrinks.

Yes I track on feast days. Mainly because I cook for my hubby and I and it would be easy to over do it. Also because I am tracking nutrients.

No I am Not!

In fact I'm not tracking them usually on fast days either. Since I only eat one meal, I have a list of about a dozen alternatives that I worked out at the start, and I stick to them. Since it's usually protein and salad, unless you use lashings of dressing, which I don't, it's quite easy to stay under 500, I'm not too worried about 20 or so calories either way. I don't think that calorie counting is sustainable for the rest of my life, so I decided early on to find something I could stick to permanently that didn't include tracking.

I do track my exercise though, 'cos I like looking at the numbers. emoticon

Thank you for this insight--yes, I think you are absolutely correct about the sodium. This explains a lot--not to get too graphic but I notice the night of a fasting day, I have to wake up 3 or 4 times a night to go to the bathroom, so definitely losing a lot of water retention on those days. I will watch my sodium intake on feast days a bit more.

Question for everyone--are you tracking calories on feast days?

Had my annual health exam last week after 8 weeks of 5:2. Was down 15 pounds from last year (only about 6 of it in the last 8 weeks, however) and my blood pressure was good. Still waiting for the cholesterol results. Hoping for a some improvement. My husband's acid reflux is so much better that I am happy just about that.

TERIANA your water retention is probably from a big difference in sodium from fast days to non fast days. I track my sodium and was surprised to see how very little I have on fast days. I also agree with ANAIS57 that it's the general downward spiral of weight that counts, not day to day weight. Good luck to you.

hmmm. Is this ONLY for "Progress & Success Stories?? (has anyone noticed this forum title spells success wrong?)

After 2 days of overeating I'm doing a fast day out of sequence today. I missed last weeks fast days, so this is quite OK.

I grew some oyster mushrooms, and the last ones are getting old, so I had 2 mushroom meals. So good, filling, and perfect for fast days.

That is good advice, thanks for that. I had a physical exam yesterday, so body weight was part of the ordeal. The doctor was pleased with my weight, but it was a bit of a surprise to me and not in a good way if you catch my drift.

On the positive side, all of blood work numbers were great--HDL, LDL cholesterol, lipids, sugar, all within normal range. Also, resting heart rate was 58 and blood pressure was 114/83. I am pretty sure this is a direct result of following the 5/2 fasting plan for the past four weeks AND living the Spark lifestyle for the past four years. BTW-I turn 57 this month, so I was approaching this physical with a bit of trepidation.

Personally, I don't weigh myself after non fast days. there's no point, you're weighing the food you've eaten plus the water it's absorbed, on it's way through your digestive system, and carbs like bread and potato can absorb a lot.

You could try eaten more things like cucumber and grapefruit that help remove water.

I have never lost weight consistently week on week. I zigzag. But overall, the trend is downwards. I feel that the scales have too much control over life, and I prefer to rely on my measurements and how I feel in myself.

Is anyone else having dramatic fluctuations in water retention?

It seems on my Fasting Days, I lose a lot of water weight, sometimes having to get up to go to the bathroom 3 or 4 times after eating my evening meal and going to bed. I think this is due to releasing carbos or something? Anyway, when I eat normally the next day, I seem to retain water. I can gain 4 pounds within a day or two and I know it is not fat, because there is now way I am eating those many calories.

Anyway, it is kind of discouraging to "lose" 4 pounds after a Fast Day only to "gain" it all back a couple of days later. Any ideas???

Yes, I kind of zig-zag. A bit up, a bit down, stick for a couple of weeks. There are points where my weight was stable for a long time, when I was gaining weight. Those seem to be the weights that I stick at on the way down. Then suddenly I'll lose a couple of pounds and I'm past the sticking point.

Evelyn....have you found that all along.... getting stuck? i figure my body has been through this so many times through my life... the scale going up and down. so when i try something new, my body just hangs on and doesn't release the weight even though my clothes get bigger and bigger. and then all of a sudden wooosssshhhh.

congrats ForestPal!!!! doesn't it feel great to be in the next 10s?

Hooray! Lost another pound, which put me at 169, Another goalpost. Having difficulty with fast days -- resulting in several 700 to 900 days when I'd start a fast, only to break it in evening. Surprisingly, the day after I passed the 169 goalposr, I couldn't keep my fast, but weight stayed at 169 anyhow.

You're very welcome to join Forestpal, but you're not obliged to, we're happy to hear from you anyway. It seems common amongst this group, to have zig-zagged down. What precisely makes the difference I don't know. I found last week that I'd gained 3lbs! Without rhyme nor reason, but this week, Ive lost that three pounds plus another. So work that one out, I can't!

I've been posting on the fast team, not knowing I should/could join. I've been on a portion control diet 2 years, losing 60 pounds. I fractured my back in April, and have been inactive since, with pain upon standing or moving. Since the fracture healed, they tell me it's arthritis. I exercise short times on my bike, and recently got an inversion table that I use every day at least once. I live on a lovely tiny lake, with a dog & a cat.

I've been 5.2 fasting 500 cal 2 days a week from arising in the morning, for 4 weeks. I was doing fine till this week. On my weekly weigh in, I'd gained 2 pounds. I was up another pound this am. I'm fasting today -- a day early -- with no problem, looking forward to my lobster dinner.

Let the good times increase as the weight shrinks.

I have been fasting two or three times weekly since march. I started at 173lbs and I'm now 157lbs, which is good going for me. I don't track calories at all, I have half a dozen less than 500 calorie meals that I stIck to, and eat normally on my non fast days. I rarely eat anything I haven't cooked for myself. I feel really well, and full of energy on my fast days when I usually go to the gym, then do another two hours of karate in the evening. I will be fasting for the rest of my life to try to decrease my fairly high cancer risk.

I have been fasting 2 days a week and eating at the top of my calorie range (or a tad higher) the other 5 days. I lost 6 lbs the first week and then have settled into a 2 lb per week loss. I have been working hard trying to get my 8 glasses of water each day and exercising 5 - 6 days a week.

Yesterday was my first fast day. I had 511 calories and finally ate fruits and veggies!
The result this morning was 2.5 lbs down. I am so happy.

I had gained 1/2 pound a day for 3 days in a row and I was eating between 1000 and 1200 calories. When I checked my food tracker it turns out I was too high in carbs and sodium compared to my normal diet. That is when I discovered the Fast Diet and found this team. So I lost the 3 gains plus another pound on top. Wheee!

Today is a fast day. I had breakfast at 5:45. I have been hungry off and on all day. I think on Friday I will have eggs for breakfast! I did have some almonds and blueberries around 2. I did not make it the 12 hours like I had hoped. I am planning on salad for dinner tonight with chicken.

In only my second week of 5:2 and I am very pleased so far. I'm down 3 pounds and my husband is down 4 pounds. Yesterday my supervisor brought treats to work (on my fast day). I was able to resist by stashing one for today and telling myself that I could have it "tomorrow". That way I didn't feel deprived and I kept to the fast. Good results on the scale so far.
I have a health check up in 8 weeks so I am trying this until then to see if the results are better than last years'.

I had 2 weeks off IF too, due to social obligations and I guess lack of trying. I have jumped right up 3 -4 lbs. It is right back on the plan for me tomorrow! I am so disappointed in myself when I was getting so close to my goal! It does show that it helps though being on IF, I wasn't gaining on that. The sad thing is, I thought I was eating pretty healthy and for the most part in moderation. I did have some bread and pasta over the last week and a cocktail. I would have preferred not to have the pasta but my husband made it for dinner. He did at least use whole wheat and mostly fresh vegetables with little meat and no cheese. I had been doing IF since beginning of March, so mad at myself!

So I am on my 5th week of fasting 2 days a week, 24 hours each (from dinner one night to dinner the next) and am quite disappointed to have to say that I have not lost any weight. Oh I go up and down the same 2 to 3 lbs but that is it. Mind you I have spent the past 2 years making lifestyle changes that have seen me loose just shy of 100 lbs, but my goal is to loose at least 20lbs more. In the past 6 months I haven't seen any appreciable movement on the scale and was thrilled to come across this Fast Diet and had high hopes that it would jump start my weight loss again but alas nothing! I haven't changed any of my other eating or exercise habits so I certainly thought I would see something. I would welcome any feedback anyone has and/or suggestions. Despite my disappointment I am still planning to continue the fasting because of the other benefits Dr Mosley found in his studies. Namely the cell regeneration and reduction in risk for other diseases. It really makes me wonder though about the true weight loss benefits of the fast.

It has felt much harder going this week with the two fasts on Tuesday and Friday, but I did manage to stick with it and I am still losing on average 2 lbs a week when I weigh in on the Saturday morning so feel pleased with my progress. My goal for the moment is to get back to below 200, which I last was in 2009. Once I have achieved that I will really feel I am on the way.

So I just thought I would jump on here real quick to say I lost 2 lbs.! After only two fasting days of 18 hour fast periods. Today is my 3rd fast day and I'm going to try to make it to 20 hours. I have to say I love this diet. I haven't been killing myself with exercise or depriving myself. I love how when you are craving something you can tell yourself I can just have it tomorrow but by the time tomorrow comes you don't want it anymore. I am definitely sticking to this! emoticon

Carla, that is fantastic!

I am on a fast day but was struggling. I wanted to fast as long as possible as I am usually ok with this. I had some scrambled eggs to help and I think it is working. I might have a green smoothie later. I have a friends child's 10th birthday party this evening so will be surrounded by lots of goodies. I was going to say to hell with it but I am thinking that having the excuse that it is a fast day and not having any will actually help me not to pig out!!

Hi all,

I have the results of my bloodwork and I'm sooo happy with my cholesterol levels !

Last year it was 205 mg/dL which was over the maximum of 190 mg/dL. After 8 months of intermittent fasting it has dropped to 162 mg/dL meaning my risk factor is now 2.5 which is graded as the low side of LOW ! (between 2.5 and 3.7).

This is so rewarding !
By the way, I was lucky never to have anyone with the same name in my class. I named my daughters Neftis and Isis (ancient Egyptian deities) so I think they're safe too emoticon
Cheers, Carla

Hello!

Week 14 or Week 1 depending on how you look at it.

I gained back 6 pounds as of Monday morning (after taking 2 weeks off from IF). I had two fasting days this week and lost 4 pounds...only 2 more to be back to where I was on week 12.

I have a Megan too. I didn't know it would be so common. She has so many girls to share her name with at school but she doesn't seem to mind. In our family the name is John. My ex, my son, my brother, my nephew, and my children's grandfather.. All John. Ended up calling my boy Jack. I hope the next generation invests in a baby name book or something emoticon

Oh, you don't have to tell me about how popular our name is. I went to school with three Megan/Meghan's in one high school, and five in the other. Now my sister in law's name is Megan too. It gets very confusing at family gatherings. We're trying to do the whole I'm Meg and she's Megan deal to ease some of it, but nobody is catching on. We both end up getting called Meg, which she hates and I prefer.

Birthday thread is on my to do list. idk where I'll put it though...

Thanks guys :) And hahaha about our name. I had myself, a Megan and a Meaghan in my class and we only had 97 in our graduating class. Our names were never spelled right! And being a twin, I go by Heather too. I've never been an individual. LOL.

Birthday list sounds great :) Always nice to get a happy birthday!

I'm happy to report after six weeks of doing 5:2, I'm down 13.4 lbs. I had a loss this week and definitely didn't expect it. Tuesday was my birthday, so between eating out too many times over the weekend and the red velvet cake my hubby got me, I thought the scale would go the other way. I didn't eat crazy, but you never know how many calories are in food from outside the house! I did skip out on going to a Memorial Day party on Sunday because it was my fast day. I know I wouldn't have kept to my 500 calories there. Still loving this diet :)

I've only just started alternate day, 4:3 fasting but May 6th was the day I decided I'd better do something about my weight. I've done calorie counting and I try to do 30 min on my gazelle glider daily. This being my first week of fasting so I can't say my loss is all due to that but I got on the scale this morning and TA DA! I have lost my first 5 lbs out of 60! emoticon

I've just had a week's holiday and I only fasted one day, but ate a lot in the second half of the week. Thankfully the scales sat at the same as the week before, which I was very grateful about! I will be interested to see what my weigh this weekend will be. emoticon

Hi everyone,

I'm glad I finally broke through the plateau and am now below 57 kg ! I'm aiming to go below 56 kg by the time I go on summer vacation (Fuengirola, Spain) at the end of June ! I will feel much more confident in my bikini emoticon

I'm planning on skipping my fast days in the two week vacation so I'm very curious what my weight will be when I return ... emoticon

You all sound like you're going amazingly well. Congrats to everyone on the losses and small victories.

Steph - I did try standing on one foot with my eyes closed right after I watched the documentary the first time. 5 seconds. I have horrible knees though thanks to falls and car accidents, so I don't know how accurate that 5 seconds actually was/is to me.

I fell flat on my face today!! I had been feeling very tired so instead of sticking to low calories I was going to fast as long as I could and eat sensibly for the rest of the day. I had fasted from 4 yesterday until one today which was 21 hours. Then I had a slice of home made lasagne for lunch. All fine. Then not sure what got over me but I had some rhubarb in the freezer and I make 12 tartlets which I would never normally do!! I ate them all! Then felt even tireder for the rest of the day!!

I think I had woken up frustrated with the scale being up a pound! I just want to get the last few pounds down so I can switch to maintenance. Maybe i just need a little more patience. I will not give up!

Hi everyone,

I've been on intermittent fasting (very similar to 5:2) for about 8 months but I have skipped it for the holiday weeks (X-mas and Easter) and a few times in Jan/Feb when it was really cold and I wasn't feeling too well.
Overall I have lost about 6 kg (13 lbs I think) and I'm very happy with that. My progress is slow because I have an underachieving thyroid (Hashimoto), something which I only discovered in 2005 after three years of struggling with all kinds of symptoms.

I'm currently stuck between 58 and 57 kg ( 127- 125 lbs) but I don't worry about it too much. If I can lose another 4 kg (9 lbs) I would be over the moon but if not, then so be it. As long as my cholesterol level is normal (risk factor for hypo patients) and I manage to keep this weight, that is already a success for me.

I'll keep you posted on whether I reach my ideal weight and whether my cholesterol level is back to normal (it should drop with 5:2).

Cheers, Carla

Day 2 finished yesterday and the scale is definitely down. I just want to see that it maintains. I was very tired last night and had meant to do ten minutes jump rope at some stage yesterday but didn't get to it. I didn't wake until my alarm went off this morning which is unusual for me. However, that could all be to do with the fact that I got a lot of exercise in during the week and was going to have an exercise rest day yesterday anyway.

When I was hungry last night I had promised myself that I could have anything I wanted for my breakfast this morning!!! Thankfully, I haven't woken up hungry so I will have a sane food day!

I work out on fast days - I am one of those people who find that they have a lot more energy - and it fills the gaps left by eating! I walk for an hour at lunchtime, usually that's about 2.7miles and then I do a one hour water aerobics class in the evening.

I've been musing on why I seem to be losing more than some people here and I think it may be because I wasn't dieting before I started. I wonder if it is a lot more difficult to lose weight if you already cutting your calories?

Yes, this is a great way to measure progress that is not "weight" related! You and I are losing, but slower than some. Oh well! We are still losing. My energy level is higher ~ I feel stronger. Not to good at the one foot, eyes closed yet, but it will come.

This is Progress:

I have been back to Dancing since Dec (after my 5 months not moving with the surgeries).
During the dance we lift up ONE FOOT and try to hold our balance. UM....at least that was the idea....NOT ME..I kept falling over or putting my foot down.

Now...we do this EVERY WED...and EVER WEEK it's the same...I mean..I"m a little better...but still UNSTEADY.

Yesterday - WED.....we danced ( I have done this FAST THING for about 3 weeks now).

It was time to HOLD UP MY FOOT and HOLD MY BALANCE...and I tell you..I DIDN"T MOVE ...I held it...and didn't lose balance..and was SOOOO STEADY!!!

The best ever....now??? Was it due to this...FAST THING??? Or has my balance from the surgeries just finally COME BACK???

I dont' know...but I went from NO BALANCE to DOING GREAT!!!
SO I"M EXCITED!!!

HAS ANY OF YOU TIMED YOURSELF WITH ONE FOOT UP and EYES CLOSED???
