I'm currently reading Alias Grace ~ Margaret Atwood. In my opinion, not one of Atwood's best as I'm finding it cumbersome.

The Goldfinch
By Donna Tartt

Can a single moment cast a shadow over every year that follows? In Donna Tartt's latest novel, The Goldfinch—a brilliant successor to her 1992 international best-seller, The Secret History—it takes just a split second for 13-year-old Theo's life to be upended. As he and his mother explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art, waiting for a spring rain shower to abate, a bomb explodes, and suddenly all is ash, smoke, silence. His mother is killed, but Theo stumbles to safety, carrying a priceless 17th-century painting, The Goldfinch, which, in his grief, he clings to like a lifeline. Exiled to Las Vegas to live with his pill-popping gambler father, Theo befriends the violence-addled Boris. The two embark on a frenzy of drinking and drugging, until Theo's abrupt return to Manhattan.

Through his tainted adolescence runs the innocence of his love for Pippa—herself severely injured in the blast—and the kindness of an antiques dealer who provides Theo a home in New York. Adulthood opens on a sketchy world where stolen masterpieces are collateral for drug cartels, and Theo becomes adept at friendships and affairs as fake as the antiques he traffics in. His obsession with keeping The Goldfinch hidden causes dark clouds of paranoia to gather over his head.

For Theo, there are more shadows than light, but now and then "the sun strikes raindrops at a certain angle and throws a prism of color across the sky."

The Light of Amsterdam
By David Park

Loss and regret haunt the residents of Belfast, Northern Ireland, who populate David Park's poetic, hopeful novel, The Light of Amsterdam. There's Alan, whose "one and extremely pathetic infidelity" has broken up his family; Karen, who has pinched a bracelet from the retirement home where she works as a cleaner to support her self-centered daughter; and Marion, who mourns her youth and worries that her husband will stray. Strangers, they all visit Amsterdam on the same December weekend. As the characters navigate the city's narrow streets and canals, their lives intersect, for the most part fleetingly. But what really unites their stories is a common desire to somehow break the "silent bonds of loneliness" and find that "however small, a spark of grace or holiness" exists within them.

Painter of Silence
By Georgina Harding

Georgina Harding's Painter of Silence draws readers into a dreamlike, sometimes nightmarish fairy tale set in a world where paranoia and deprivation dominate daily life—1950s Eastern Europe. The privileged daughter of an upper-class family, Safta spent an enchanted childhood in the Romanian countryside, where her earliest playmate was a servant's son named Augustin. Long after she lost interest in their friendship, Augustin, a deaf mute of eccentric artistic genius, remained devoted to Safta, though his inability (or unwillingness) to communicate made him an increasingly invisible observer of her family's life. The novel begins as Augustin tracks down Safta, now a nurse at an urban hospital, after years without contact. World War II and the Communist aftermath have destroyed the Romania in which they grew up, but Augustin gradually brings Safta's lost past back to her in drawings of her childhood home and of the lover she has long believed abandoned her. Augustin and Safta offer each other something deeper and rarer than romance—a healing respite amid the devastation, which Harding describes with heartbreaking delicacy. "It's not the war anymore and nobody's fighting now but there are casualties everywhere...," Safta says. "You can't see but they're there. The wounded, the shell-shocked, the amputees missing pieces of themselves." The novel's magic lies in Harding's poignant but unsentimental portrayal of people who face such losses and yet find a kind of wholeness.

Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety
By Daniel Smith

There's nothing funny about an anxiety so crippling that it takes only 30 seconds to turn a minor mistake at work into a potential disaster involving unemployment, homelessness, and death. And yet you'll laugh out loud many times during Daniel Smith's Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety—as when he says his wrung-out 23-year-old self resembled "Nixon resigning the presidency," or when he calls his anxiety a "drama queen of the mind." In the time-honored tradition of leavening pathos with humor, Smith has managed to create a memoir that doesn't entirely let him off the hook for bad behavior (is one's mother the source of every problem?) but promotes understanding of the similarly afflicted. (Who knew there were two kinds of sufferers: the stiflers and the chaotics?) Now, if only he had revealed the full name of the psychologist whose tough-love approach turned out to be the best medicine. What if the worst does happen, Smith had asked the good doctor; what if I do end up dead in a Dumpster? "Well," the therapist responded cheerily, "at least then you won't be anxious anymore!"

Porch Lights
A Novel
By Dorothea Benton Frank

New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank is back home in the Carolina lowcountry, spinning a tale that brims with the warmth, charm, heart, and humor that has become her trademark. Porch Lights is a stirring, emotionally rich multigenerational story—a poignant tale of life, love, and transformation—as a nurse, returning to Sullivans Island from the Afghanistan War, finds her life has been irrevocably altered by tragedy…and now must rediscover love and purpose with the help of her son and aging mother. An evocative visit to enchanting Sullivans Island with its unique pluff mud beaches, palmetto trees, and colorful local lore—a novel filled with unforgettable characters, and enlivened by tales of the notorious Blackbeard and his bloodthirsty pirate crew and eerie Edgar Allen Poe stories—Porch Lights stands tall among the very best works of not only Dottie Frank, but Anne Rivers Siddons, Rebecca Wells, Pat Conroy, and other masters of the modern Southern novel as well.

The Lifeboat
By Charlotte Rogan

288 pages; Reagan Arthur
Available at: Amazon.com | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound

The Story of a Shipwrecked Soul
Grace Winter is a survivor. Whether adrift on the Atlantic in a leaky, overcrowded vessel or on trial for murder, Grace, the narrator of Charlotte Rogan's riveting debut novel, The Lifeboat (Reagan Arthur), knows how to take care of herself. In 1914 she's traveling on a luxury liner with her husband when the ship begins to sink. Henry gets his beloved wife onto a lifeboat and disappears into the chaos. The novel unfolds as 22-year-old Grace, now in prison in Boston, recalls her three-week ordeal at sea, including the events that led to her being accused of murder. Grace remains unemotional, despite the often horrifying details. She concludes, for example, that if another passenger "hadn't beaten people away from the side of our boat, I would have had to do it myself." We get occasional glimpses of Grace's previous life; facing a future of servitude after her family lost all its money, she schemed to steal wealthy Henry from his fiancée. And we see her in court, cast as the frightened damsel facing an all-male jury. But the narrative stays focused mostly on her experience in the boat, the tension deliciously building as the passengers grow hungrier, thirstier, and more desperate. The lifeboat is, of course, a familiar metaphor for ethical dilemmas. But Grace is not so easily defined. While not one to agonize over issues of morality, she is neither evil nor innocent. Rather, she is blindingly pragmatic; as she says in court, "It did not occur to me that I might have to sacrifice myself."

Devotions
By Bruce Smith
Phoenix Poets

"We know so much. We know a glance is the romance of the optic nerve, and a blow at an angle so that we keep on going."

To read Bruce Smith's Devotions is to enter the unsettled crossroads of contemporary American poetry. It's a place where pop meets the classical, where the spiritual text meets LOL, where Paolo and Francesca might road-trip from Corpus Christi to St. Paul with overnight romps in the hay at the Red Roof Inn.

Devotions pulls together some 60 poems—called devotions—on all manner of Americana, from the shopping malls to the jazz clubs, from the gritty to the prissy, from Providence to the unbidden. Only a poetry of reverie could unite the "ravishment, affliction, fraudulence, magnificence, anguish [and] argument" that is the hodge-podge mishmash of this nation. It accomplishes what so little American poetry does today, even attempts today: It envelops you in a singular imagined universe of rhythm and logic.

Blueprints for Building Better Girls
By Elissa Schappell
Available at: Amazon.com | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound

Most Deceptively Deep Book of 2011
Elissa Schappell is not for the fainthearted. In this collection of eight revelatory, risky stories, we meet the girls that all mothers fear their daughter might become—or, to varying degrees, the girls we might have become ourselves. One turns to hate to cover her vulnerability, while another suffers from an eating disorder, in some part due to her mother's all-consuming embrace. The most shocking story follows a college coed through her days of binge drinking and blacking out during a relentless parade of frat house parties. Surprisingly, it's also the most moving. Schappell has the ability—and the guts—to cut straight through the "girls gone wild" images that inevitably throb to mind (ouch) and show us the tender and often hopeful human beings that live inside these women-to-be.

In one upsetting scene, a group of angry, male bar patrons chases the coed and her friends across a deserted parking lot. As she jumps into a car to escape, the coed feels her mother's treasured strand of pearls break and must leave those pearls rolling hopelessly across the asphalt—save for one, about which she wonders if she has any right to even keep. "Maybe some farm kid walking down the street would find it..." she says. "And then they'd think that maybe the world wasn't as ugly as they thought it was. Maybe there was magic in it after all."

A rule for us all: There is always magic in a gift from your mother. Always.

Rules of Civility
By Amor Towles
Available at: Amazon.com | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound

Most Cinematic Book of 2011
In Amor Towles's debut novel, Rules of Civility (Viking), post-Depression Manhattan—the glittering metropolis of cocktails, jazz clubs, and glamorous apartment towers guarded by knowing doormen—is also the city of profound reinvention. Towles's fascinating narrator, Katey (née Katya) Kontent, works as a secretary at a white-shoe law firm, where she deftly hides the fact that she's the daughter of immigrant laborers. Refreshingly unconcerned about becoming an old maid—she just turned 25!—she nevertheless finds herself in competition with her roommate for the affections of one very attractive patrician named Tinker Grey. ("How the Wasps loved to nickname their children after the workaday trades: Tinker. Cooper. Smithy.") The charming and cerebral Katey appears to have the edge, until Eve is badly injured in a car accident in Tinker's roadster. Guilt-ridden, he moves Eve into his elegant Central Park West apartment; she gets better, they begin to travel together. As Katey learns about their escapades in Europe and the finer New York suburbs, she tries to make do with other privileged, sometimes more callow boys, but time has changed everything, including her. In the crisp, noirish prose of the era, Towles portrays complex relationships in a city that is at once melting pot and elitist enclave—and a thoroughly modern heroine who fearlessly claims her place in it.

Ten Thousand Saints
By Eleanor Henderson
Available at: Amazon.com | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound

Most Layered Book of 2011
"On the last morning of 1987 and the last morning of Teddy's life, the two boys lay side by side, a pair of snow angels bundled in thrift-store parkas," Eleanor Henderson writes in Ten Thousand Saints (Ecco), forecasting the death that will spark the next year's events in this irresistibly rich and engrossing novel. The story moves from Lintonburg, Vermont—where 15-year-old Teddy and his best friend, Jude, pass the time getting high, being roughed up by jocks, and yearning vaguely for the mysterious pleasures of girls—to Manhattan's (pregentrified) Lower East Side, where Teddy's 18-year-old brother, Johnny, works as a tattoo artist and plays in a hard-core punk band. Manhattan is also where Jude's father, Les, an amiable pot dealer, has lived since abandoning his family years earlier. On New Year's Eve, Eliza, Les's almost-stepdaughter, visits Lintonburg and relieves Teddy of his virginity during a party. Hours later, Teddy dies under heartbreakingly stupid circumstances. This all happens in the first two chapters. The rest of the poignant, complex story unfolds over the following year, as Eliza, Jude, and Johnny form a tight but fraught bond in Teddy's memory—and Les belatedly tries to act like a dad. Henderson brilliantly evokes the gritty energy of New York City in the '80s, and the violent euphoria of the music scene. The hard-edged settings highlight the touching vulnerability of young characters, who are—behind the sex, drugs, and punk rock—innocents aching for something unnameable, always just beyond their grasp.

The Leftovers
By Tom Perrotta

Most Of-The-Moment Book of 2011
October 14: The date of the Sudden Departure, or a "Rapture-like phenomenon." Millions of people around the world—dignitaries, celebrities ("the nerdy guy in the Verizon ads"), and regular folks—simply vanish. But Tom Perrotta's The Leftovers (St. Martin's) is less concerned with the inherent religious issues than with the lives of the suburbanites left behind. Kevin Garvey, the newly elected mayor of Mapleton, strives for a return to normalcy even as his children become unmoored—his daughter, Jill, goes from model student to troubled teen, and his college-age son runs away to follow a crackpot "healing prophet." There are other, community-based post-Rapture changes as well, including the Guilty Remnant, a cult that sends silent, chain-smoking, white-wearing Watchers to patrol neighborhoods and remind survivors that "the old world is gone." Soon Kevin's wife joins the G.R., and he can only stumble forth into a relationship with a woman who's still grieving the sudden disappearance of her husband and children. Perrotta, always a master chronicler of listless suburbia, has written an affecting, often funny story of people reeling from loss and searching for a future. The Leftovers is an apocalyptic novel for people who wouldn't be caught dead—or even Raptured—reading such a thing.

The Tiger's Wife
By Tea Obreht
Available at: Amazon.com | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound

Most Ambitious Book of 2011
When her grandfather dies far from home under mysterious circumstances, Natalia sets off on two life-changing journeys: one across her homeland, the former Yugoslavia, and another into her family's history, revisiting stories that her grandfather used to tell her. As long-hidden secrets come to light, Tea Obreht's The Tiger's Wife (Random House) deftly walks the line between the realistic and the fantastical. Natalia's grandfather was a brilliant doctor and practical man (his motto: "I prepare, I think, I explain") who scoffed at superstition throughout most of his life. Yet his recollections take on the magical sheen of folklore, as in the tale of the "deathless man," a wayfarer who never ages, and another in which a deaf-mute woman grows so attached to a stray tiger that her neighbors believe she's become its wife. These strange and beautiful stories from the past eventually converge with Natalia's present, revealing oddly comforting truths about death, belief in the impossible, and the art of letting go. In Obreht's expert hands, the novel's mythology, while rooted in a foreign world, comes to be somehow familiar, like the dark fairy tales of our own youth, the kind that spooked us into reading them again and again.

I just finished "Fatally Frosted" by Jessica Beck. It was silly and just a little light for me. Now I am listening to James Patterson's mystery "Pop Goes The Weasel" There are 10 CDs in this 423 page book. It should keep me busy for a day or two.

A friend brought me a very silly mystery called "Fatally Frosted" about someone that was murdered with a donut! It is silly and I am about half way through it and still haven't figured out "who done it". I would never have picked this book out myself, but it is light and fun. And I have 4 books waiting for me to pick up at the library tomorrow. They are all on CD so I can listen while I work. (around the house that is)

My favorite type of book to read is a really good mystery. But right now, I am tied down to what ever they have to offer in our library that is in large type and I still have to use a magnifying glass to see it. Thursday is the surgery to see if they can fix that. If not, it will be books on tape for me. But I can handle that.

just got through reading an old one by Debbie Macomber

Brides for Brothers and it was really cute. it is about
these two brothers who decide to bring women to
Alaska. Sawyer O'Halloran who is the middle brother
is not in favor of it, but Abby Southerland arrives and Sawyer
picks her up along with her two children, which they knew nothing
about. not that she tried to hide them. it is a wonder story.

What I Know for Sure About Women
By Mark Leyner

1. Even little girls, in all their blithe, unharrowed innocence, have a presentiment of sorrow, hardship, and adversity...of loss. Women, throughout their lives, have an intrinsic and profound understanding of Keats' sentiments about "Joy, whose hand is ever at his lips Bidding adieu."

2. This sage knowledge of, and ability to abide, the inherently fugitive nature of happiness somehow accounts for the extraordinary beauty of women as they age.

3. Women have an astonishing capacity to maintain their equilibrium in the face of life's mutability, its unceasing and unforeseeable vicissitudes. And this agility is always in stark and frequently comical contradistinction to men's naïvely bullish and brittle delusions that things can forever remain exactly the same.

4. Women are forgiving but implacably cognizant.

5. Women are almost never gullible but sometimes relax their vigilance out of loneliness. (And I believe most women abhor loneliness.)

6. In their most casual, offhand, sisterly moments, women are capable of discussing sex in such uninhibited detail that it would cause a horde of carousing Cossacks to cringe.

7. Women are, for all intents and purposes, indomitable. It really requires an almost unimaginable confluence of crushing, cataclysmic forces to vanquish a woman.

8. Women's instincts for self-preservation and survival can seem to men to be inscrutably unsentimental and sometimes cruel.

9. Women have a very specific kind of courage that enables them to fling themselves into the open sea—whether it's a new life for themselves, another person's life, or even what might appear to be a kind of madness.

10. Women never—no matter how old they are—completely relinquish their aristocratic assumption of seductiveness.

And here is one last thing I know—and I know this with a certitude that exceeds anything I've said before: that men's final thoughts in their waking days and in their lives are of women...ardent, wistful thoughts of wives and lovers and daughters and mothers.

I Knew You'd Be Lovely: Stories
by Alethea Black

The story that won our hearts: A woman who suspects her partner is having a long-distance affair pins her hopes on a birthday gift that demonstrates that she knows him better than anybody. (And boy, does she succeed!)

The title we'll never forget: "The Only Way Out Is Through"

The character we'd like to run away with: The divorced gentleman who falls in love with a woman with laryngitis, and woos her by writing notes.

The quote that changed our lives: "Only then, as she stared at the rows of book covers, at the pictures of people laughing or embracing or crying, all caught in the heroic struggles of their lives, did a small thought occur to her with such simplicity she almost said it out loud: 'I am afraid to try.'"

Rex: A Mother, Her Autistic Child, and the Music that Transformed Their Lives

As I lay in bed, I acknowledged how few moments in life touch us to the core of our very being. [Yet] it’s in those moments that you know what you need to know and you forget what should be forgotten. You have a brief glimpse of eternity, as time is suspended as though God is looking you straight in the eye, with a smile that leaves you clear in the knowledge that all is right and good and is as it should be...

A friend gave me The Duchess for my birthday and am looking forward to reading it as soon as I finish the one I am on now. Should be soon since I am not up to doing much right now. The movie that is out now was based on the book and want to see the movie too. Has anyone read The Secret Life of Bees. I love the book and also want to see the movie, from what I read it is true to the book.

I am reading the 14th book in a series on the Baxter Family. The first book is titled Redemption and they are written by Karen Kingsbury. They are so great!!!
This is the last in the series and I am so sad....She promises to keep her fans updated on the Baxter's on her website.
I absolutely have loved every one of them and have pasted them on to my friends.
Judy
Oh yeah can't forget Terri Blackstock. I finished her series this week about a worldwide technilogical outage. I haven't been able to get the last book off of my mind. I reccomend them to anyone who loves christian fiction as I do.

Started this diet on 1/01/07 originally and have restarted it several times.
Hopefully today is the 1st day of the rest of my life.

Smart Growth in a Changing World
by Jonathan Barnett, F. Kaid Benfield, Paul Farmer, Shelley Poticha, Robert Yaro and Armando Carbonell
University of Chicago Press, 148 pages

This book features a collection of works by noted experts in smart growth, and examines how standard American consumption and wasteful land use are steadily compounding threats to our environment, health and way of life. The book features case studies from throughout the country and provides a look at the national policies that either encourage or limit smart growth development patterns. And as the U.S. population is expected to climb to more than 400 million within the next 30 years, the authors argue that updating American land use habits will be critical to sustain the country’s growth and maintain its global competitiveness.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey

In Ken Kesey's first novel, the insane asylum becomes an allegory for the larger world as the patients are roused from their lethargy by the arrival of Randall Patrick McMurphy, a genial, larger than life con man who fakes insanity to get out of a ninety- day prison sentence. By the time McMurphy learns that he is now under the cruel control of Nurse Ratched and the asylum, he has already set the wheels of rebellion in motion. Narrated by Chief Broom Bromden, an Indian who has not spoken in so long he is believed to be deaf and mute, McMurphy's rebellion is a spectacular foretelling of what the 1960s were to bring.

I just finished reading 'Lean Mean Thirteen' by Janet Evanovich. My sister got me hooked on this series. I saw #11 at Sam's Club one day & it sounded good so I bought it. When I told my sister that I bought it she told me, "no, no you can't read that one now. Put it away & start with number #1." I love Evanovich she is very amusing! I am now on a very long waiting list at the library for #14 & can't wait to read it.

The Road Written by Cormac McCarthy

ABOUT THIS BOOK
A searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

About the Author
Cormac McCarthy is the author of nine previous novels. Among his honors are the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Pillars of the Earth & World Without End - Ken Follett
Big, intimidating books - took me about 6 days each to finish them, but once I got into them, I couldn't stop! Takes place in England in the middle ages - both in the same town, but the second one is 100 years later. Great characters & story line.

I'm going to check out that website - thanks! I've just started reading Servant of the Bones by Anne Rice. It's my first Anne Rice and I had a little trouble getting into it, but now it's really addictive. A lot of the story so far is taking place in ancient Babylon with displaced Hebrews - if that's an interesting time period for you, check it out.

I found a book at Borders and it is wonderful. It's called "Beyond Chronic Pain" by Rebecca Rengo-Kocher. When my mom told me about it, we both thought it was just a book that talks about what she does day to day to deal with her pain. It's not like that. It's actually a workbook. It talks about grieving for the life you once had, being angry, religion, treating yourself, Guilt, coping, simplifying your life, being positive and more. I have found that after reading it and doing the exercises I feel calmer and less stressed. She hits on so many things and I was writing about stuff I didn't even realize was affecting me and my pain. There is a website but I haven't checked it out. It's WWW.BEYONDCHRONICPAIN.COM

"You have within you right now, everything you need to deal with whatever the world can throw at you" i

Odd Hours - Dean Koontz
My husband & I each swooped through this one in less than 2 days - we're big Koontz fans - he has gone from horror to spiritual over the years. This is the 4th in the Odd series, and it was quite good.

Right now I'm reading Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follet. It's a big old fat book, so I'll be gnawing on it for quite awhile. So far I like it, but I'm only about 200 pages in.

Right now I'm reading the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, 5th one in the series called The Fires of Heaven.

This is my second time through these books and I love them. He makes such strong powerful characters and such vivid descriptions its easy to picture the story as it unfolds.

I read 2 John Sanford books - Invisible Prey & Phantom Prey. As usual, they were wonderful - I love the Prey series - the detective is an unusual character.

I also read Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. Such an inspiring true story!! God moves through this book - it brought tears of happiness to my eyes many, many times.

I started reading Nora Roberts. I love that this book has 2 books in 1. I finished "Taming Natasha" & I am now reading "Luring a Lady". These are in a series of 6 books (each book is 2 in 1), which I am loving.

Description on these are: Product Description (from www.amazon.com/Taming-Natasha-Luring
-L
ady-Natasha-Luring/dp/0373285647/refR>=pd_sim_b_img_1

The first time single-father Spence Kimball set eyes on Natasha Stanislaski, he was floored by her exotic beauty. But the former ballet dancer turned toy shop owner had a fiery temperament that kept men safely at bay. Sensing a hidden wound, Spence and his little girl joined forces to find a way into her closely guarded heart. For Spence realized he'd do anything to tame Natasha's fears…and show her how to love.

Luring a Lady Nothing in Sydney Hayward's background of wealth and privilege prepared her to take the helm of her family's corporation, and her new responsibilities left no room for complications. Mikhail Stanislaski was definitely a complication. Earthy and entirely masculine, Mikhail came from a world utterly different from her own. But the way she felt when he put his strong, work-hardened hands on her was wreaking havoc with Sydney's resolve.

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
This book is considered young adult fiction, but I didn't find anything particularly 'young adult' about it. It deals with a young German girl before, during, and after WWII. Captivating & moving.

Beasts - Joyce Carol Oates
This one was short and I got sucked into the story, but didn't really care for that much. Story is complex, so I won't go into details.

Same Kind of Different as Me - Ron Hall & Denver Moore...
This was INCREDIBLE!!!!
True story about 2 men from completely different backgrounds and the woman who brings them together. Immensely spiritual and God-filled book. I would recommend it to ANYONE!! It touched me on so many levels

Battlefield of the Mind By:Joyce Meyer

There's a War Going On And Your Mind Is The Battlefield...The good news is God is fighting on your side!

God desires the best for your life, and Satan knows it. Satan wants to defeat God's people with a deliberate and cleverly devised plan of deceit and lies. His attack of doubting thoughts, fear and paranoia can erode your resistance, because he is willing to invest any amount of time it takes to defeat us.

But the book you now hold is a declaration of victory! God's people will win! They can use His Word to defeat the treachery and lies of Satan. In this book, author Joyce Meyer uncovers the tactics of the enemy and gives you a clear-cut plan to triumph in the fight for your mind. Joyce will teach you how to renew your mind through the Word and stand victoriously in the battlefield of the mind.

Water for Elephants By: Sara Gruen

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie.

It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

World Without End By: Ken Follett

The No. 1 New York Times best-seller.

On the day after Halloween, in the year 1327, four children slip away from the cathedral city of Kingsbridge. They are a thief, a bully, a boy genius and a girl who wants to be a doctor. In the forest they see two men killed.

As adults, their lives will be braided together by ambition, love, greed and revenge. They will see prosperity and famine, plague and war. One boy will travel the world but come home in the end; the other will be a powerful, corrupt nobleman. One girl will defy the might of the medieval church; the other will pursue an impossible love. And always they will live under the long shadow of the unexplained killing they witnessed on that fateful childhood day.

World Without End is the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth. However, it doesn’t matter which you read first. The second book is set in the same town, Kingsbridge, but takes place two hundred years later, and features the descendants of the original characters.

Certain Girls, by Jennifer Weiner 4 stars ****

From Publishers Weekly
Following the story collection The Guy Not Taken, Weiner turns in a hilarious sequel to her 2001 bestselling first novel, Good in Bed, revisiting the memorable and feisty Candace Cannie Shapiro. Flashing forward 13 years, the novel follows Cannie as she navigates the adolescent rebellion of her about-to-be bat mitzvahed daughter, Joy, and juggles her writing career; her relationship with her physician husband, Peter Krushelevansky; her ongoing weight struggles; and the occasional impasse with Joy's biological father, Bruce Guberman. Joy, whose premature birth resulted in her wearing hearing aids, has her own amusing take on her mother's overinvolvement in her life as the novel, with some contrivance, alternates perspectives. As her bat mitzvah approaches, Joy tries to make contact with her long absent maternal grandfather and seeks more time with Bruce. In addition, unbeknownst to Joy, Peter has expressed a desire to have a baby with Cannie, which means looking for a surrogate mother. Throughout, Weiner offers her signature snappy observations: (good looks function as a get-out-of-everything-free card) and spot-on insights into human nature, with a few twists thrown in for good measure. She expends some energy getting readers up to speed on Good, but readers already involved with Cannie will enjoy this, despite Joy's equally strong voice.

P.S. I Love You By: Cecelia Ahern

Some people wait their whole lives to find their soul mates. But not Holly and Gerry.

Childhood sweethearts, they could finish each other's sentences and even when they fought, they laughed. No one could imagine Holly and Gerry without each other.

Until the unthinkable happens. Gerry's death devastates Holly. But as her 30th birthday looms, Gerry comes back to her. He's left her a bundle of notes, gently guiding Holly into her new life without him, each note signed "P.S. I Love You."

As the notes are gradually opened, and as the year unfolds, Holly is both cheered up and challenged. The man who knows her better than anyone sets out to teach her that life goes on. With some help from her friends, and her noisy and loving family, Holly finds herself laughing, crying, singing, dancing - and being braver than ever before.

Life is for living, she realises - but it always helps if there's an angel watching over you.

Hi.

A book I've read recently is "Good in Bed" by Jennifer Weiner. It's about an overweight girl who tells her boyfriend that she needs time to think about whether or not they are right for each other. She deals with her weight problem, work and relationships. It's one of the best books I've ever read. There is a sequel to this book named "Certain Girls" although I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
