Wow Cala - you are soooooooo on your way to a happier, healthier life. I am so glad you had the opportunity of a lifetime and took full advantage!!!

April 12th

Eat Chocolate:

April is Chocolate Eaters Month. Dark chocolate is healthy in moderation, but it can also boost well being and boost you mood. Savor a small piece to satisfy that craving.

I keep dark chocolate around for those rare, but strong urges for something chocolate!!! I am so glad there is a WHOLE month dedicated fo this decadent enjoyment!!! LOL

April 13th

Be Optimistic:

A positive outlook is associated with better health, a longer life and greater joy. When you look to the bright side and believe people are good, you directly increase you own happiness.

I have always been a glass half full kind a gal. It makes for a much happier life if one looks for the sliver lining instead of the dark cloud.

We went to Mexico, paid by my partner's company. A 10 year reward. We brought back only 1 thing each for our girls, their partner's and 1 "little onesy" for our new grand daughter (to be born in July). One present for the girls that looked after our kitties. A couple of t-shirts for ourselves.

Normally, we would have brought back a whole bunch of momentos and trinkets, but they just take up a lot of space. What would we really do with all the extra things just lying around. Needless to say, we are learning to buy less and less and be stronger with our own convictions. Mexico was the trip of a lifetime, with a lifetime of memories to cherish, even if we never take another trip outside of Canada.

I am spending more time on writing, and our trip has given me more inspiration. The dreams are more colorful as well right now. Lots to write about, appreciate and love.

Well on my way to a happier person....it is what it is, and we can do with it what we want. Be happy, be true, be loved, be ourselves ... BE ME.

emoticon April 10th

Simplify your life. Unburden yourself of possessions that lock you in the "rat race" of earning more money to pay for more things you don't really need. Spend time and resources on things that add real meaning Your life.

It is funny, Jackie and I were discussing our lack of materialism earlier today. I rid myself of most of the "stuff" I had accumulated because it no longer had meaning and just took up space. The items I buy now are mostly for my garden; purchased at yard sales and dollar stores. If I decide to make a "big" purchase I ask my daughter if she would want to "inherit" it, lol; I see no point in paying good money for something she will need to get rid of. That cuts way down on my spending!!! LOL

Have a great day!

Savor ever bite. Eat in a calm environment and use all of your senses to explore the texture, smell, appearance and flavor of your food. You'll be more satisfies after every meal.

This was a hard one for me to master, but now that I have, I do find meal time much more satisfying. I now remember what I ate, lol, and because I no longer watch T.V. when I eat, I actually enjoy my meals instead of just scarfing them down

Making time for myself used to bring me a lot of guilty feelings. I used to think it was a selfish act, I know otherwise now. Without personal time, I tend to get very irritable and grumpy.

I have actually figured out that I like myself, so I look at it like spending time with an old friend. emoticon

APRIL 8th - -MAKE TIME FOR YOUR SELF - THAT MEaNS ME!!.

It is funny but when i think of this i kind of shutter. I do not know where this fear hails from. Maybe residue from the past. eeeeeek! I guess i need to really focus on ME! something simple. OKOK, this may seem trivial, but today in order to take better care of me, ME TIME, I will read some of my magazines.

APRIL 7TH - SMILES EVERY ONE!
Whats the longest word in the dictionary?

Smile why? There is a mile between each s...

I try to smile when i get up each morn. It sets a good tone for the day....even if i dont feel it.

so Iam smiling now.. are you???

APRIL 6th,
At this time I do not have employment. I have not worked, because of illness. However I am just beginning to make my home my own. WE bought some kitchen rugs yesterday.

APRIL 5th,
I can create my own reality. Sounds good on paper. To apply this to my life means I must take a leap of faith. As i choose to leap, I must not fear. I know it is said that all my dreams can come true.
So yes I take the leap of faith, I write what I see in my minds eye, to be my best reality. Then step by step, I can accomplish it. first, I want to loose weight. so I know that exercise is key.

APRIL 4th
The friends I have chosen and who have chose me are my best resource. these friends are my SPark friends. I say thank you, thank you all. i love you.

APRIL 3rd
each day I am able to think on my beliefs and know where i am with my higher power. This is mostly my private self.
Where i turn each day for strength and where you are his answer, thank you.

April 2nd
I do get plenty of sleep.. At least it is my hope each night.

April 1st
I have many hobbies. the most recent is cultivating a love for quilting.

Make time for yourself:

Pursuing personal growth is just as important as spending time with others. Pencil in some "me" time, even if it just a few minutes each day.

Personal time gives you the ability to organize your thoughts, release stress and relax. It is important to recognize that YOU are the priority.

emoticon Smile! Grinning, even if you don't feel happy, releases serotonin in the brain, instantly lifts your mood and makes you feel better. Plus, smiling people are viewed as sincere, attractive and sociable.

I smile all the time! I make it a point to smile at people on the street and in stores, saying good day or beautiful out today! Nine times out of ten they smile back and many acknowledge the greeting. it make me happy, and seems to have the same affect on others. So...

SMILE! It makes your face Happy! emoticon

emoticon Find meaningful work. The nature of your job isn't as important as how you approach it. A positive attitude and a focus on the meaning behind your work make it more rewarding.

I am on permanent S.S. disability due to collapsed disc's in my lower back and neck. I wish I could return to work, but in lieu of that, I try to help others when I can, thereby making life itself more rewarding.

April 5th,

I particularly like this one. It addresses an issue that many have trouble with: Creating your own reality. It can be done, if one takes charge of their life. I hope you will all seriously consider this days message.

"TAKE ACTION:

If you don't like your job or other life circumstances, make a plan and take charge. You create your own reality, you can change your life if you are unhappy. Start today."

Obviously, it does not happen over night, but with perseverance and dedication to your goals, it can be done.

Best Wishes on Creating your Reality.

Elle

emoticon Good Morning,

April 4 - Cultivate friendships:

"The happiest people spend the least time alone. Attend social gatherings, host a party and call your close friends to catch up as soon as possible."

In addition, I would like to suggest that as a way to cultivate friendships, you pick a member from the team roster that has not been around in a while and post a comment to their Sparkpage to let them know you remember and care about them. Or pick someone you have never met and say hi; reach out a hand in friendship and see what happens. You never know what will happen if you never try.

Have fun and enjoy today's tip to "Greater Happiness".

I am with Elle and Sandy, spiritual but not connected to any specific religion. My beliefs are constantly evolving as I read and learn more for myself. I could really drag out the soap box here but will smile instead and leave it at that.

I AM VERY SPIRITUAL HOWEVER I DO NOT ATTEND ANY CHURCH AS MY BELIEFS ARE MY OWN AND NOT THAT OF OTHERS. I DO BELIEVE I AM ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE I HAVE A MISSION HERE ON EARTH.

emoticon Day three of 30 days to Greater Happiness

Develop your Spirituality:

"Research shows that people who are spiritual tend to be both happier and healthier than those who are not. Consider meditation, spiritual readings, prayer or other religious practices."

I am a very spiritual person, but am not religious. I have a strong and abiding faith and belief in God; I just do not need a formal setting or anyone to lead me or show me the way. I was raised Catholic at a time when the fear of God was the norm and the wrath of God guaranteed. I no longer believe in a wrathful or vengeful God, but I shy away from formalized religion. My relationship with God is mine ~ I am comfortable in it and with it ~ it grows on a daily basis.

This is going to be a tough one for a lot of us! I also find that darkness helps. A cool room, ambient noise, Ambien CR, and sometimes earplugs help me too. I need to get an eyemask but haven't made it around to it so far. Maybe that will be a new goal for the end of the week - get a mask! LOL

I find I sleep much better if it's totally dark...even the light on the DVD player wakes me up if it's left on. We have a rule at home that after 9 pm is quiet time. I also have some lavender oil & put one drop on the underside of my pillow - it helps me to breathe deeply & I find the scent relaxing.

Change is a long, slow turn...

emoticon April 2 - getting Plenty of Sleep!

I know, easier said then done. However, we must continue to try. Here are some tips on helping establish a sleep routine:

Take a Warm Bath:
It's a great way to relax your body. Don't overdo it, however. You merely want to relax your body, not exhaust it. Too long in hot water and your body is drained of vitality.

Use bath salts, or throw in Epsom salts and baking soda—one cup of each. These will relax you and also help remove toxins from your body.

Get a Massage:
Have your spouse (or whoever) give you a massage just before going to sleep. If you can convince them to give you a full body massage, great. If not, even a short backrub and/or a face and scalp massage can be a big help. Have them make the massage strokes slow, gentle, yet firm, to work the tension out of your muscles and soothe you to sleep.

Listen to Music:
Play some soft, soothing music that will lull you to sleep. There are even cassettes and records designed for that very purpose. Some are specially composed music, others simply have sounds of waves rhythmically breaking, or the steady pattern of a heartbeat.

Of course if you don't have a record, cassette or CD player that will automatically turn off, we don't suggest this. If you have to get up and turn it off at the end, you've obviously lost its effect.

Drink Warm Milk:
A glass of warm milk 15 minutes before going to bed will soothe your nervous system. Milk contains calcium, which works directly on jagged nerves to make them (and you) relax.

Drink Herb Tea:
If you don't like milk—or are avoiding dairy products—try a cup of hot camomile, catnip, anise or fennel tea. All contain natural ingredients which will help you sleep. Most health food stores will also have special blends of herb tea designed to soothe you and help you get to sleep.

Eat a Bedtime Snack:
Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Tobacco
Sleep in a Well-Ventilated Room
Sleep on a Good Firm Bed
Sleep on Your Back
Get Some Physical Exercise During the Day
Keep Regular Bedtime Hours
If You Can't Sleep, Get Up
Don't Sleep In
Get Up Earlier in the Morning
Keep Your Bed a Place for Sleep
Avoid Naps
Avoid Illuminated Bedroom Clocks

Holy Tea (great tea) ~ this tea helps with energy, mental clarity and—insomnia!

Standard and tested techniques:
Progressive Relaxation
Deep Breathing
Visualize Something Peaceful
Visualize Something Boring
Imagine It's Time to Get Up
Quiet Ears
Not Thinking
Backwards Counting / Mental Computer
earplugs
Secure Place
Bedtime Routine
Hot Water Bottle

Good luck! Have a pleasant sleep!

April 2-
Get plenty of sleep!
Wow-this will be a tough one for this group!! I usually don't have too much trouble here getting lots of sleep-but my sleep is interrupted frequently so it is not "refreshing" sleep.

I have always wanted to get into scrapbooking. Cardmaking sounds like a blast too! I think I will have to go get some more things to get it up and going. Is shopping a hobby?? LOL I really enjoy cooking!! Great Challenge, Elle. I find it does help the mind when you have something that you enjoy and can look forward to.

Started reading the Readers Digest Select Editions, short stories, and they are nice to read because they're short! Also went out and bought some jewelry makings and am going to make an attempt at making a belt. Thought I could do it cheaper then the $58 fancy ones in the boutiques.

What a wonderful challenge Elle!! I just printed off my calendar and it is on my fridge. I have everything a girl could want to start scrap booking. I even have a few pages done. I enjoy it so much and am even quite good at it. (if I do say so myself) But I always seem to not have the time to do it. But if I look closely at how I am spending my time, I'm sure I will find a few minutes here and there that I could put toward that activity and would enrich my life more than how I am currently spending them!!! Thanks for the great idea Elle!!!!

I love to read and I have been into genealogy for about 15 years or so. I also play games on the computer almost every day. I am trying to incorporate daily fitness as a hobby but right now it still feels like an evil chore most of the time! LMBO I will get there some day.

This is a true statement. I love to garden & it does help me to lose myself - as well as working on fitness. And I get so much pleasure out of my yard when a new project is completed! I especially enjoy being able to share my plants with friends! I also journal daily, which is a fantastic way for me to release pent up frustration, straight to my Lord! It also keeps me grateful for all the blessings He has provided for me!
This was a great idea for a challenge, thanks!

Got my calendar all printed up and am ready for the challenge. My hobbies are reading, scrapbooking, PETS, playing on the computer-I used to crossstitch too but haven;t done that in awhie, walking, gardening. I don't need a new one since I have plenty hunh?? I usually spend time doing something I like every day-at least playing on the computer or reading but want to get back into more scrapbooking!!

My favorite hobby is reading (since it doesn't hurt). I also enjoy cross-stitch & embroidery and have found small kits that I enjoy making as gifts. I used to write frequently in high school and college, and recently the "bug" has started nibbling again. Time seems to be the biggest deterrent right now. I think I'd go crazy without some form of mental escape!

Each month Spark puts out a calendar with tips and hints to help make your journey more successful. The topic for this months motivation is "30 Days to Greater Happiness: Don't let April Showers Get you Down". I came up with a great idea for utilizing this tool and would like you all to go to the following link:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivat
io
n_articles.asp?id=813

and print out the calendar for April. Each day post how you incorporate that days hint/tip into your daily life. There are many things we forget about as we lead our daily lives. By utilizing yet another of the tools offered, we can enhance our journey to health. I hope you learn a lot from this month's challenge and have fun along the way.

Today's hint/tip:

Start a Hobby: People who engage in captivating activities are more satisfied with life. Lose yourself (and your worries) by sewing, writing, cooking or dancing.

Several months ago I began scrap booking. It has become a very satisfying hobby and has helped fill some cold, wet, wintry days. In addition, my daughter will have some beautiful memories to peruse in the future, to help remind her of where she came from and the adventures we shared. I have begun sewing again, which I have always enjoyed and am currently working on a quilt for my daughter. These things help fill my life with a sense of accomplishment and much pleasure is derived from their doing.

Have Fun!!!
