I'll look that up. My son (age 7) and I read together, usually as part of a group with the library, but next month's selection isn't very long, so we could probably read more than one book together.

Finished "Redshirts" (and Android's Dream), but if you're a Star Trek person, you've got to read it...has nothing to do with any of the various incarnations, but does reference it, and it was laugh out loud funny.

I have read a half dozen or so. The list turned me on to The Sparrow which I just ordered from Paperbackswap. It looks interesting. Odd that every person you ask will have a different set of 20 books, but I Robot is ALWAYS on each list.

I would certainly include Childhood's End, one of first and favorite sci-fi reads.

Sci-fi is such a huge genre that you could never read it all. Fun to try.

Thank you! I have a couple Elizabeth Moon books sitting in a pile on the bookcase that I haven't gotten around to reading, so I'll have to see what series they're a part of (and if they're book 1 or if they're like book 4, which tends to happen when I buy from used book sales...).

I've enjoyed Weber a great deal. I confess I couldn't get into the John Ringo books. Not sure why.

Elizabeth Moon does military fiction, SF and fantasy. The Paksenarrian series is fantasy, starting with a sheep-farmer's daughter who wants to be a mercenary in a world with elves, dwarves, kings, and assorted gods. The first three books follow her as she grows way beyond anything she expected. Then there are several prequel books setting up Paks' world, and some sequels that follow several of the other characters she encountered after they go their separate (but still interacting) ways.

The Serrano series is SF, a number of books focusing on different people, working their way through the same time period.

My favorite writer would have to be David Weber. A lot of what he writes is military science fiction, with a focus on the tactics etc of battles and a fair amount of politics. I love the series he wrote with John Ringo--first book is "March Upcountry" and there are four. (I believe I saw that more could come in the Empire of Man series, which is very exciting!) It follows the youngest son of the empress as he goes from "zero to hero" through a really, really tough situation. I don't want to give anything away so that's the very short version!

His Safehold series is also really good--it is a mix of future and past and religion, after humanity's last colony becomes a very religious colony to prevent technology. Not everyone agreed with this plan, and so someone is working to bring technology back. The battle focus in this series is naval ships, but actually on the water unlike the Empire of Man and his Honor Harrington series. (Again, I don't want to give anything away, but I am a big fan of this series.) I think the sixth book of this series just came out in June or July? I'm behind--haven't gotten my hands on it yet!

The Honor Harrington is the series David Weber is most known for, I would say; it is at least 11 books long and follows the female character Honor Harrington. Again, this is military science fiction, with a heavy dose of politics between space civilizations.

He has a fantasy trilogy as well, not just science fiction! I really enjoy the War God's Own series. The main character becomes a reluctant champion of the war god; he is from the race that the other 4 fear and hate so it is even harder to be a champion.

Can anyone recommend another military science fiction author or book/series? (I'm working my way through this thread to start a list of authors to look at, but it is so long it is going to take some time!)

You haven't read the first wheel of time? It started badly, dumping you into a bad place before you ever have a chance to bond with the characters.

I'm currently reading the John Scalzi books...I have "Redshirts" and "The Android's Dream" out from the library. Finished "Fuzzy Nation" in under 48 hours....

Lackey and Bujold are perennial favorites.

I can't seem to get through the first "Wheel of Time" book. Now that the last one is coming out, I may have to give it another go.

Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Pratchett, Piers Anthony, Le Guin, Orson Scott Card, and so many more!

Are there any fans of Timothy Zahn out there?
He has a SciFi series that is aimed more at young adults, but it's a great story about a teenage thief and a chivalrous alien dragon on a quest to save the alien dragon's entire race. Good story!

But McCaffrey is my favorite. I'm always in the middle of re-reading all of her series, they are just so good!

And the Ship Who Searched, which is co-authored by Mercedes Lackey, is my favorite out of the Brainship series. Who would have ever guessed?

Primitive camping is so not me. I like reading about the world starting over, but it only makes good fiction. If it ever got real, good heavens, I would be totally miserable.

I occasionally get the opportunity to live without electricity for a few days. Don't like it. While it's certainly possible to live without the modern conveniences, it take some time to set it up to work for you. It helps if you like to do primitive camping.

My fave genre is really apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic, like American Apocalypse. Love it all unless they toss in zombies, which are a pretty done topic. So interesting to think how we would do without everything we have now -- sci fi at its best for me.

Nicole, I think Stephen King has wandered over that line several times. Horror for him is a catch-all phrase to define the undifinable. It is on my list to read because it is not pure horror.

GingeryTea, skip books 7-10 and start reading again with book 11. Brandon Sanderson has done a fabulous job of keeping the story focused on the original eight (or so) main characters.

I just started reading the Mistborn trilogy and am really enjoying it. I doubt I'll finish the Wheel of Time series, I got too frustrated with the characters about four books ago.

Anyone read any of the David Edding's books? The Belgariad - series of 5 books. The Mallorean - Series of 5 books. The Elineum - series of 3 books. Also wrote a very funny book called "The Redemptions of Althalus.

I am rereading the Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L'Engle. I was never able to get the last two books at the time and I have managed to get the whole series from the library in audio. Something old to add to the New Year.

Hi all,

I love all the authors mentioned but just read The Omen Machine by Terry Goodkin. Right now my favorite author. Wheel of Time series was wonderful as well but has taken too long to complete. I've also read recently some paranormal romance which doesn't really fill my fantasy cravings but are good anyway.

I like Anne McCaffrey the Dragen riders of Pern and Mercedes lackey and most sci fi especially by female writers and lots of fatasy -- vampire time books. I'm always looking for a new writer to explore as I read and reread books by my favorites until they fall apart.
