Agree, there are times when I've found myself out running errands or stuck in a situation where I didn't get to eat when I should and got so hungry. In that case I'm going for what's quickest and healthiest, noting that I'll select the lesser of the evil options. :)

When I'm on the road I usually stick with things that are easy to pack and that will keep well like dried fruits and nuts and cracker bread. Yoghurt will also keep fairly well without refrigeration. Birgit

I agree about Subway! I know it is often touted as a reasonable place to eat, but yes! Their bread.."fresh baked" is still only basic dough with a few toppings, and the meats and cheeses are all processed.
In a pinch...on a road trip...in the absence of anything better, I would say "Go for it." But if/when there ARE better choices, I too would avoid it.

I used Subway quite a bit this summer myself, but after looking more closely at the ingredients I've decided to stop. Their bread has high-fructose corn syrup and all their breads are made from mostly white flour. On top of that many of their items contain lots of GMO ingredients, especially corn and soy and the deli meats all contain a lot of salt. Of the veggies, many are in the "dirty dozen" as far as pesticide residue. Unfortunately I don't have a good alternative. Birgit

My home first, but if I'm out and need a quick bite, Chipotle and I don't get the white rice. I recently started going to Subway too (no dressing and no cheese). I never liked going there before but I heard Bob Harper recommend it on the Biggest Loser. :)

Lauren,
I like the Whole Foods food bars too...and yes! You're right, sometimes the choices there are not as clean as I think it should be...some of the prepared salads have way too much dressing on them to be clean. But at least, mostly there are clean choices!!!

Well...Whole Foods has a little cafe sort of place inside. I've always assumed the whole store was clean, but I also know what happens when I assume....
Panera Bread is sort of clean.
Everywhere else, probably not so much.

Our local food coop is outstanding. I can get an organic breakfast, lunch or dinner for about the same price I'd have to pay for any of those meals at Mc Donald's. Still more expensive than homecooking, so I'm trying to eat at home as much as possible. Birgit

"steeping room"--they have lots of vegan and gluten free options. It is all organic and DELICIOUS. I'm never disappointed.
"z tejas"--they have a gluten free menu, I'm able to just order dry grilled chicken with steamed veggies and I'm good to go!
I live in Austin so we have LOTS and LOTS of clean eating options out here! This is one of the healthiest cities in the US!

Crescent City is very small and the restaurants are geared toward tourists. I haven't discovered all of the local restaurants yet but not to lucky finding clean ones so far. SO I guess home would be my favorite place for clean eats right now.

I like Chipotle's. They try to source a lot of their meats and veggies locally. They also try to use animal products from sources that raise them ethically. I go for the burrito bowls, with cilantro brown rice, black beans, pinto beans, pico de gallo (fresh chopped tomatoes, onions, and peppers), and guacamole. Mmmmmm. I'm hungry now. :D

Two of my favorites are:
Souplantation/ Sweet Tomatoes www.souplantation.com/ Here I always start with piles of fresh veggies (avoiding the prepared/dressed items) I'll have a bowl of soup topped with fresh salsa and/or cheese. And for dessert, fresh fruit with an occasional indulgence of frozen yogurt.
HuHot Mongolian Grill www.huhot.com/ I only discovered HuHot this week...can hardly believe I've driven past it dozens of times, and not thought to try it! It IS amazing. Fresh meats, vegetables, tofu, noodles all prepared right in front of you on a giant flat grill. Add, or don't add one of a dozen or more sauces/dressings (I only add a little chili oil and soy sauce.)
At both of these restaurants it is EASY to eat clean because YOU, and only you choose what to have, and how much to have...what's not to love about that?!?!?
