Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

I read a way to cook steel cut oats to increase the volume. I put a cup of steel cut oats in my crockpot and add 6 cups of water instead of 4, cook it on low overnight. You get 4 huge servings. I have some cooking right now.

On the topic of Steel Cut Oats - I am a huge oatmeal fan. I eat whole eats every morning for breakfast. I decided to give the steel cut oats a try. When they were finished cooking, there is not too much in the bowl. One serving seems to be about half the space of what one serving of whole cut oats would be. Is this correct or could I have done something wrong?

Spoilage would depend on the conditions of the place where they have been stored. Whole oats will last a long time (years even) if kept air tight and cool. But cut or rolled oats will spoil faster. Even these will keep a long time if stored well. I freeze all cut grains (flours, cereals) that I think I won't use up within 6 months. Even flours, if left out at room temperature should be used up within 2 months.

If your cut oats came in a package from the store and you have had them for 6 months or more I say throw them away and get fresh. If their package was well sealed then they should be okay if they were stored in a cool, dark place.

Hope these ideas help

Ok thank you. I made them once and they didn't turn out right so I put them away until today and decided to try them again.

I do not see anything. There is a light dusting but hardly anything.

We now have a bulk food store in town that you can buy as much or as little as you want. I think I will check the smell of the ones there and bring a small amount home and see if they smell the same.

Thank you for your help.

dump them into a bowl and check for the signs I mentioned above. Other than that, I'm not sure what to say. I do know whole grains can last years and still be ok, they have found different grains in tombs/caves/etc, that were sealed and still fine.

They smell off. Nothing else but I do not know if this is a normal smell.

The smell is kind of like, I guess it is an earthy smell but stronger.

Can you describe why you think they are bad? smell? color? dusting of something black or green? moisture? sprouting?

I opened my container of steel cut oats and I am not sure if they have gone bad. What is the shelf life? There is no date on the container and I cannot remember when I bought them.
