Through the Tunnel - Doris Lessing

driving back from Cape Town to Johannesburg in December we stayed in a tiny two street town in the Karoo called Richmond. It is an official book town. Not much else there but there is a secondhand bookshop which rambles around an old house. The fiction and Africana "room" had a whole bookshelf filled with everything Doris Lessing ever wrote.... Delight after a long journey

Winesburg, Ohio Sherwood Anderson I read this in 1982. I starred it, which means I thought highly of it, but I don't remember a thing about it. hmmmm. so here is a synopsis written by Linda Linguvic;

"Sherwood Anderson published this collection of short stories in 1919 all set in fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Even though it's written in the third person, it's told through the narrative voice of George Willard, the town reporter, who shows up in most of the stories, sometimes taking an active role and at other times just telling a story. It is obvious that the writer loves these people, and is frustrated at the isolation and unhappiness of their lives, even though he makes it clear that they hold within themselves everything needed to make them happy. The character in the first story is a dying old writer who is attempting to write about all the people he has known as a "book of grotesques". What follows is the collection of stories, which each character fulfilling that expectation. There are the young lovers who don't quite connect; there is a old man so obsessed with religious fervor that he attempts to sacrifice his grandson; there is a married man who regrets it all and tries to warn a younger man of future unhappiness; there's a doctor and a sick woman who try to connect. The book is full of people who toil all their lives and never achieve happiness. As I made my way through the book I kept hoping that even one of the characters would rise above the morass. It didn't happen.The writer has a wonderful sense of place and the town of Winesburg in the early part of the 20th Century is very real. These people were not poor or disadvantaged in the usual sense of the word; they didn't suffer fire, floods or famine. Instead, they trapped themselves in their own psychological webs that made it impossible for them to lead anything but sad unfulfilled lives. This is a fine book and stands alone as a clear voice of its time. "

I just put it on my re-read list. % )

Land of Marvels Barry Unsworth, 2010

from the New Yorker..."It is 1914, and, after three years in the deserts of Mesopotamia, the British archeologist John Somerville believes he is on the brink of a great discovery. Before he can uncover what he thinks was the residence of the last Assyrian king, Somerville must fight off plans for a railway that will encroach on his dig site, and thwart the efforts of Elliot, a charismatic, straight-talking American (in British historical novels there is rarely any other kind) who is bent on finding oil and on destroying what remains of Somervilles marriage. There is something of E. M. Forster in Unsworths knowing depiction of a decaying empire run by upper-class incompetents, and in his generous and sympathetic portrayal of women caught between cultures, but he falters in the execution: the plot is that of a thriller, yet the story unfolds at the leisurely pace of a somewhat distracted teatime conversation. "

Libby - Re discovering an unread book in one's bookshelves - I have a special dance for that - I cannot believe how excited I get! For years I have tucked books away in the wrong places in hopes of always having "something in the bank".

O Jerusalem - Laurie King

Thank you Libby. Will search about for the Coroner's Lunch series & The dragon tattoo ones.

I'm afraid Mankell will be too dense. The gall bladder attacks have been triggering sudden onslaught migraines that leave shadow headaches lasting for days - I have been trying to finish de Bernieres' The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman for two weeks now. I keep reading the same sentence over and over - grimness. Wish I hadn't red all of Christopher Moore's books. Evanovitch and S. King are too formulaic. i I'll be wanting someone silly, smart, and and blood simple. % )

thanks again,

Jim Ann

(The) No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith

Curtiosity - thinking of you with your op! .... Things that you have read but could serve the purpose of distracting you if not.... The girl with the dragon tattoo series ? Not funny but gripping.... and stay up all night to find out what happens next....
There is of course Wallander by Mankell - think you said you had not read his detective ones. They are not fast moving though. And a funny detective series - laugh out loud funny - that I have read only the first three of but am always hunting for more at the second hand shop.... is one written about Laos. The first book is The Coroner's Lunch . They are by Colin Cotterill (hope I have spelt it right).

In the Land of Dreamy Dreams - Ellen Gilcrest

I'm having surgery the day before Thanksgiving & I need a fun series to get me through the uncomfortable/pain pills period. My last operation, someone lent me all the Harry potter books - they were perfect.. Recommendations PLEASE???? Irreverence is fine , humor a plus.
